Raphael shrugs and gently waves away Estelle's apology, "Not at all, Madame Bellerose. Honestly it's refreshing to meet someone who does not know of my grandfather's ignominious legacy. I won't bore you with the details but I have little recollection of our ancestral home. It is through my sibling's and parent's story that I know most of our heirlooms. A few-" Raphael gestures to the flickering stone rotating around his head, "-have been recovered, but the rest have not. I'm hoping to restore them all to their rightful home in time." He smiles warmly as Estelle speaks encouragingly of his quest. He replies, "My thanks for your thoughts, I hope to do well by my family's name and by my country."

Gesturing deeper into the room, he asks, "Shall we continue? There is rather a lot to see here. There is a true wealth of history to be found here, it's a shame that so much history of our fair country should be consigned to the view of a privileged few. All of our citizens should be free to see the glories of our past. Perhaps I should consider freely displaying my family's heirlooms in a museum of some sort. Perhaps it will prompt others to join in."

Idea #369: Found a Durendalan history museum.

Female Human Wife of Seth Varianna

Lucia takes Halcyon by the arm and begins walking toward the room Halcyon said she heard footsteps in. When they get to the door she knocks. "Hello, may we come in?"

Estelle breaks from Raphael, going towards one of the walls to inspect the details of a shield. “There certainly are many interesting goodies here. He doesn’t show off about it, but Emile has a wonderful selection of historical texts in his library as well. He might be willing to donate a few if you were genuinely interested in creating such a museum.” She takes a step around the room, eyeing what catches her attention before returning to Raphael. “Perhaps I could see about raising some artifacts for such an endeavor. I wonder how difficult it would be to convince Council to allow Roland’s famous Durendal blade to be exhibited publicly. Maybe perhaps a lesser but equally as historically enriched relic, like Murgleis or Sauvagine.

Tomas laughs slightly, but shakes his head. “The dead appreciate the view more than anyone else, for it is the last thing they have. You may see who is there in that music room, but I will remain here, less a dance partner convinces me otherwise.” He begins to murmur to himself about the flowers before he sees one that catches his eye, a golden-yellow rose like flower. Its petals are thick, and closer inspection reveals almost vein-like red tubes within it. His eyes open largely, looking rather surprised. “Dios mio, a Lemon Rose. Emile should be careful with this. It is a bad omen to show off a poisonous flower.

Helmuth goes to scratch his head, noticing his hat for the first time evidently and taking it off. He places it by his drink. “Harvey gave us prototype for the new models several months ago. Officers ranked captain and above received theirs on the beginning of this month, while widespread manufacturing has begun to create a supply for members of Roland and the border guard.” Again he takes a sip of his drink, it is mostly ice now. “Implementation should begin after training, they should be ready to distribute in March or April. You magicians should enjoy this, some of our arcane recruits have begun mixing the abilities of spell and firearms. Amazing what proper discipline does to a wizard.” Alistair fails to suppress a face at the comment, but Bertrand puts on a smile and nods.

Junior Seer, Caroline de Beaux | Know Local or Know Noble

During Halcyon’s pause, she hears the small footsteps coming from the northwest room, confirming her suspicions of there being someone above the staircase room. Lucia and Halcyon make their way towards the room, Lucia giving a knock to the door, and a loud peep comes from within. Lucia asks to enter. The room is silent for a moment, but footsteps once more emanate from the room. The door cracks open, an eye at chest level watching through it. The door is opened further.

Halcyon recognizes her as Caroline, youngest sister of Emile de Beaux. Her hair is a dark chestnut like her brother, but is long and straight. She is small maybe 4’10’’, and thin. Her face angular and her eyes large and sharp. Her skin is white, paler than her brother and sister’s olive skin. She wears a blue dress that trails to her knees, with white and black trim that dances across it. “Nyx haftl xiu-” she begins, though covers her mouth shortly afterwards. She starts again meekly, “Um, good evening.

DC Diplomancy 20:
Caroline's abilities as an oracle are questionable, though powerful. While she occasionally able to channel her abilities and make accurate predictions, the pressure she has from her family makes it difficult for her to do her work. The de Beaux family has a long line of Oracles, and if Caroline’s skills match theirs, then she is a powerful ally to have.

DC25:
Caroline has the Tongues curse, making her unable to communicate in times of stress. Coupled with anxiety, Caroline has trouble communicating with others, and frequently avoids conversations with those she is unfamiliar with. At times of ease and among friends however, she is known to be rather eloquent.

Raphael cocks an eyebrow in surprise, and interest, as Estelle mentions Emile's historical texts. I wonder if what sorts of things I might find in there about the Montefiore clan? Another time, perhaps... He nods thoughtfully along to Estelle's thoughts, following her idly and pondering. He replies with a smiles, "I'd be grateful if I decide to go ahead with the idea. Granted, there is a certain limit on what I could hope to do in the immediate future." His smile grows mischievous as he continues, "Most of the item's I'd like to display are not readily available. Recovering them would be my first step. That said, once it's done, I will happily take you up on your offer. All should know our city and nation's history. Would you care to continue our exploration? I believe there is another attached room, unless I miss my guess."

Check out that room to the south if she agrees. What time is it now, roughly, by the way?

Valentina has been whiling away the party, in recent hours, by traveling about the common area, drinking (lightly) and dancing. She speaks flirtatiously with powerful men (for the social benefits) and with the servant class (for their undeniable access to random information). She has been, however, not interacting much on a deep level with anybody, and is quickly growing bored of cheap revelry.

I'm sorry for my long absence. I had sort of a bad time. Can I have a catch-up so I can decide where to go or a plot-hook? My default is, of course, to go get Raphael.

EDIT: Run me into that craftmaster dwarf, DM!

Valentina perks up after Aron and Vincent leave the room. Her daze seems to have ended. She makes her way out of the smoke room, and begins to walk throughout the ballroom, her heels echoing a satisfying click that pierces through the dull business conversations from the smoke lounge. In the vestibule, she spyies Emile de Beaux and Francis Lyon chatting over a bottle of wine by her construct. She makes a beckoning motion and the construct animates, briefly startling Emile. It makes its way past the two men, its strange rhythmic steps keeping tempo with the clockwork symphony that ticks on within it.

The robot speaks: “A DWARF SEEKS YOU, MADAME. ONE ERNEST STONEHEART, A CONSTRUCT ENTHUSIAST LIKE YOURSELF, MADAME. I LAST SAW HIM BY ENTERING THE VESTIBULE’S EASTERN DOOR. ” It raises two of its arms on its right side in unison, pointing towards the door as it mentions it. From the door you hear faint conversation.

Patron of the Persecuted, Estelle Bellerose | Theme Song | Know Local or Know Noble

Estelle nods, looking at the door to the south. She laughs, “Your guess is correct, there is indeed a door. I haven’t been there yet, let see what lies inside” She takes a few steps towards the door, her necklace jingling as she strolls forward. She reaches the door knob, and opens the door.

Although dimly lit, it is clear the room is in a state of disarray. Many desks fill the room, almost all of which are littered with papers. Some of them form large, overlapping mountains of pages, while some piles waterfall over the desks. Some pages are torn or crumpled, overfilling or surrounding waste bins. On the walls are many maps of the continent, of Durendal and of Roland. Pins hold up thin threads of some glowing material, giving many colored trails that faintly glow on the walls. Perhaps they represent some sort of network, an exchange of goods and services, people, assets.

Someone is more business oriented than they let on. And to think I let him down for being too ‘capricious’ earlier.” She takes a step into the room, scanning the papers on the ground, careful to avoid them. She tilts her head back towards you with a bit of a smile,“It wasn’t locked, think he will mind?

On the third floor, Caroline wrings her fingers. “Um, yes, company is nice.” she says, possibly forcing a smile, or perhaps not coming naturally to her. She opens the door fully.

Caroline’s room is rather large, perhaps twenty-five by thirty or so feet. The room is particularly tidy, almost strangely so. A tea set resides on a center table, already set up. Her bed is large and while covered in dozens of stuffed animals stitched together seemingly by hand, each seems to be placed purposely on the bed. On large wooden display cases lie many divining tools: tarot decks, crystal balls, boards covered in runes, dowsing rods. They all appear ornate, either specifically crafted for Caroline, or relics passed down to her. A desk lies in in the room with just an open book with blank pages, a quill placed beside it. Another room, perhaps a large closet, juts from one of the corner.

The room is calm, even serene. The faint playing of music can be heard from downstairs, and the tea gives off a bright, floral aroma that invites you in from the entrance. “Emmy wanted us to meet I think,” she tells Halcyon, and gestures in towards her room. “And nice to meet you Misses Varianna.

Marcus makes his way towards the door of the room in which music comes from. With a shake of the door knob, he finds the room to be locked. Tomas smiles across the room, but from beyond the door Marcus hears voices, and while quick and hushed, are audible from by the door:

Shhh, hold a moment, did you hear that?” starts the first voice. They sound male, and somewhat distressed.

A second voice, younger sounding and presumed female: “Its locked. No one is going to kick down the door.

Man: “My sister might.

Woman: “Gods, always back to her. Live a little, its a party.” She clears her throat, almost certainly intentionally. She speaks now, most likely for Marcus. “I do apologize, we are in the midst of a masterpiece. I am covered in paint and if my model moves, I won’t be able to capture his form. I’ll open the studio when it is finished.

Man, quiet: “You know, I have always wanted a few portraits of myself to hang up.

Woman, quiet: “Gods Darius…

It would be the foil to Galatine’s country of sorcerers.

Valentina and her construct enter the library. Bookshelves line most of the walls, and a fireplace makes the room warm and cozy. There are a few couches and seats with small tables and stacks of books next to them. Just from an opening glance, you spy books on history, etiquette, survival, prophesy, economics, magical arts. The room has a certain mustiness found nowhere else in the house, but it is partially covered by the smell of smoke.

The room has several members of the party, all mostly quiet. A brunette women looks at the bookshelf, her eyes scanning each title. Her ears ascend into points, clearly of elven ancestry. On her chest lies a pin of a red bird. Near her, an older gentleman stands up straight. His hair streaks silvers, and he whispers towards the half-elf as he flips through a large tomb. Lastly, a stout dwarf man seems engaged in a book, with a small stack awaiting his attention. He sits at a table at the opposite side of the room.

Raphael recognizes all of the maps on the board. A map of Roland, a map of Galatine, a map of Durendal, a map of Tizona, and a map of the continent. The maps appeared weathered, yet while the dates vary across the last hundred years, each has been painstakingly updated by hand. Bridges, forests, and towns have been manually added to the country maps, and the Roland city map has recent developments, updated roads and buildings.

The map of Roland perhaps has the most pins, and connects the most threads like a web. The Map is perhaps three feet by three feet, and easily has over one hundred pins on it. Some areas of the map have several pins, up to a dozen in some areas, in the same location: the arcane society, the Guard Headquarters, the higher judicial affairs building. Most pins however are mapped to residential areas. You note that the area you live in has a single pin on it, connected to around eight other locations, mostly residential. Marcus’ bar, the Guard’s HQ and the higher judicial affairs building connect to your pin.

The maps of the countries have less erratic pins and ties, with most of them resting in cities or towns. They seem to represent trade, with many threads following roads and highways. Areas with large resources such as mining operation areas, forests and trading posts all feature many pins.

I’ve never seen this many numbers and sheets before.” Estelle begins, dragging her finger across sheets of paper. “He must have an incredible accountant, Emile can’t be responsible for all this...” She continues to circle around the room. “Can he? "Nothing serious happened, except I embarrassed myself and perhaps your father. I was introduced to the Galatine ambassador, when her bodyguard and another Galatine left to go sample some tobacco. As they left, your father said something to the effect that 'you must try the tobacco that so-and-so gave me today. It is to die for.' As I explained to him later, sometimes people say things like that because they've had a premonition and don't realize it. I didn't want to believe that, however, so I drew a harrow card to get a different read on the situation. I got the Empty Throne."

Here Halcyon pauses for a sip of tea and then fishes in her deck for the card she had drawn, laying it for Caroline and Lucia to see. It looks like this

"A blond man at a grave site. I decided I would try to slip into the room where the tobacco was being prepared for the guests and cast a spell to detect poison. The bodyguard caught sight of me and moved to defend his comrade, thinking I might be casting an offensive spell. The hookah got knocked over and broken. The tobacco was not poisoned, so it was rather embarrassing and caused a bit of a stir. I have yet to apologize to the ambassador, but your father was very understanding and we put a few people on alert, at least, just in case."

Halcyon sighs and sips more tea. "'Tis the burden of the oracle to sometimes see disturbing things and have nothing she can do to alter what happens. Perhaps you know the feeling. If you like, I can help you grow into your gifts. I only recently went through what you're going through now, and I had the help of a more experienced oracle to guide me." Halcyon lays a card with her business address on it. "Ignore the part that says, 'by appointment only.' You can stop by any time."

@Halcy, Caroline is a sister to Emile, not daughter. Honest mistake though, I’ll pretend you said brother.

Caroline takes a long look at the card of the blonde man. She observes it intently as Halcyon recounts the incident. Caroline breaks her focus when the second card enters her view, Halcyon’s business card. The young oracle speaks, this time without breaking into strange tongues. “I think I shall stop by. I have never been too keen with cards, they’ve always brought bad omens when I draw from them. Perhaps we can work on that.” She takes the business card, walking away from the table and placing it on her desk by the book with the blank pages. She returns to the table. “A wheel usually means change or travel, and maybe the tree is like a family tree. If the tree represents Galatian royalty, we might have had similar readings. I know not what flags or birds indicate though.

The Dueling Witch, Alistair Hawthorne | Know Arcana or Know Local

Seth and Alistair take a step out of the bar. “I suppose hide and seek isn’t fun if you know where they are hiding,” Alistair says, quiet though almost chipper. They walk to the front foyer, Emile de Beauxand a chef speaking to each other. You hear the chef say something along the lines of “another ten minutes.” Emile takes notice to the two men and offers them a wave, whispering something to the cook that causes him to bow and leave. Compared to the lively dinner, the foyer seems almost a bit too vacant now. An alluring smell of some pastry comes from the kitchen. Emile raises a glass of wine to his lips and smiles.

Big Game Hunter, Tomas Parisi | Know Noble

Tomas finishes his bouquet, a small but lovely assortment of a dozen or so flowers. Large emerald blade-like leaves curl outwards, framing the blossoming plants. He draws a small bit of string from a leather pouch at his side, tying it all together. “I too could go for some mead.” He smells his bouquet, quite happy with the result a smile begins to curl. “Mead is rare in Tizona. The bees we have are larger, and more aggressive. Getting the honey, like most affairs in Tizona, too easily ends in death. I would like to say our honey is sweeter, but that would just be my pride talking.

"I wouldn't say sweeter, but it is a very full bodied taste, thicker too, depends on one's preferences as for which you like better, though you can't argue on the price difference, I've only had it the one time, so it might just be the variety I was able to sample
hope I'm not taking too many liberties with the world, I'm just making small talk, and waiting for the people in the next room to allow us entrance

Seth smiles back at Emile and approaches him. "Have you seen my wife around recently?" Seth takes a deep breath, smelling the pastries and deserts in the kitchen. "The sweets smell quite good. I hope they taste as good as the smell."

Just realized Seth could use his ring to find her, but that's no fun.

Ernest Stoneheart turns, taking interest in Valentina. He puts his book down, quickly grooming his beard, and adjusting his jacket. He hops down, and makes his way towards her. “Silverstone! Ya look just like your wee sister, splittin’ image.” Ernest speaks rather loudly, or perhaps it is just the quietness of the study. The older gentleman sends a glance in your direction, but continues his whispers to the woman next to him. Ernest continues, looking up at the tall Valentina: “Maybe a bit taller than the little one. Ernest Stoneheart, Headmaster of Magical Crafts. I teach ya sister at the Academy, maybe my best student.” He extends his stubby hand out.

"Hello." she says, bending down to reach his hand (and also sticking her butt out for balance and to show off) and shake it vigorously. She ignores the compliment towards her sister, instead asking, "So, I heard you wanted to talk to me? I wouldn't think it would be about my sister."

"Cards don't work for everyone. You have to use tools that relate well to the mysteries that resonate with your spirit. I draw my inspiration from the stories and lore of many cultures, so cards are good symbols for me. But you must cultivate the tools that match the mystery you embrace."

Halcyon finishes her cup of tea and regards the leaves at the bottom. "I can't tell you what the flag and the bird mean, for they can mean many things. A flag, for example, can stand for a region or a nation, and hence relate to politics or history of the region. But flags can be messengers, such as a flag of truce or the flags flown on a ship to indicate the navy that controls the ship. Likewise, birds are traditional carriers of omens because they fly into our midst at unexpected times. But a crow carries a different omen from a sparrow or a hawk."

"The symbols appeared to you, so your associations with these things is the important thing. What does a flag suggest to you? A bird? Let associations flow forth from the center of your mysteries and link them to the events of the world around you."

Halcyon gives Caroline some time to think on this, but then glances at Lucia as if to say, 'We should be going.'" To the young woman, she says, as she stands, "It has been delightful meeting you. Lucia's husband will be looking for her, I expect, and we've imposed on you long enough. Will we see you downstairs before the stroke of midnight?"

Raphael glances at Estelle out of the corner of his eye, recalling the discussion he'd'do interrupted earlier. Could they be in league? Frowning thoughtfully at the map he replies, "I can't say that I've ever had the impression he was so serious. One of his siblings perhaps? As for the map, it seems to indicate partnerships of sorts between various parties of interest as well as trade and such. Quite intricate, really." Raphael eyes Estelle as he speaks, gauging her reaction.

Lucia sits and listens to Halcyon's attempt at helping Caroline with her oracle abilities. The descriptions and stories Halcyon tells feel very foreign to her, but that does not stop her from following the conversation. When she turns towards he and motions to leave she follows Halcyon's lead. As Halcyon stands, so does Lucia and once again takes her arm.

Party Host who Loves to Boast, Emile de Beaux | Theme Song | Know Local or Know Noble

In the front foyer, Emile puts up a finger, a gesture to wait a moment. His finishes swallowing his wine, and places his finger down. “Oh I assure you desert will be divine, ten minutes at its most. Salvador is one of the best chefs I have ever met.” He places his glass down on a table, and nods his head towards the stairs. “I think I saw Lucia upstairs with Halcyon, they went into the western staircase room if I recall. They seemed to be having quite the connection, perhaps a friendship blooms at this party?” He winks playfully and smiles.
