Hello all,

I know many PbP have run before based on the Rise of the Runelords AP and yet here is another one.

This will be my first PbP, so I am expecting it to maybe encounter some bumps along the way, but also to be an enjoyable experience for all.

I am not going to lasy down any rules written in stone - I want also to get the feel of PbP aside from the player perspective (which I have already been through and still am), I am looking for 4 players that believe they may be able to post at least twice a day - from what I have seen, if it is not so it can actually bog things down a LOT (mainly during combat). I am around my computer most of the day but for sake of organization, I am aiming at the following post times (please keep in mind I am in Europe = UTC-1):

Character Generation:

To keep things from going out of hand, I am putting some constraints in character generation
- Point-Buy: 20 points
- Races: Core, APG, UM, UC, ARG, BoA, BoF.
- Classes: Core, APG, UM, UC, ARG.
- Hit Points: Max at 1st, Average after
- Starting Wealth: Average for class
- Traits: 2 + 1 Campaign
- Alignment: Let's be nice to the new guy and go good or neutral alignments, unless you are extremely adamant about evil
- Backgrounds: I am not expecting a novel to be written around the background, but lets go for something with enough flavour and content so that I can have an idea of who the character is.

I am not much of a fan of long recruitments - I am not going to put down a deadline immediately - depending on the number of applications, once I feel we have enough I will stop recruitment and give a time frame for those that already applied to finalize their characters.

And then... we START!!

I present Zelladania, a Varisian rogue from an unfortunately very brief Runelord campaign.

Sczarni

well this seems most promising.

I can't guarantee exact times for posting but I do have the ability for multiple posts daily.

the profile is the character.

has been in several runlords games and all have died fairly early in the campaign.

I'd be down for this. Going to create a Cleric of Saranae, go for the healing focus archetype. I'll get it posted later this evening in full detail.

Sczarni

Ok we got brawn, skills, and divine, lets see if an arcane type posts and we got it all.

Hey Zella small world

I'd like to play with Vigal, a scarred witch doctor. By default, he'd be an Orc, but if you're willing, I would prefer to make him a half-Orc.

If you're ok with this archetype, I'll flesh out his profile.

I present Dorvren. I also have him up for a Jade Regent Recruitment, so I would need to alter his campaign trait and his history a bit. However I think the other sections of info I have give great insight into who he is, just needs a little retconning, removing the references to Tien-Xa and the NPC from Jade regent.

I am in California but I can post a lot.

EDIT: Take a look at the STYLE section for good info

The campaign trait I will take will be black sheep, with Titus-giving a +1 to Bluff

Yay, Noro! Maybe we can try a Runelord game again together. :)

I've been wanting to get into another RotL game ever since the last one I was in broke up during the attack on Sandpoint, and for the first time I want to keep playing the same character. I'll post him when I get to my computer.

Short version is that he is a halberd fighter from Riddleport whose goal in life is to become a Hellknight in the Order of the Nail, mostly in response to the near anarchy of his hometown.

Of course, I may have to rethink this, I can do one post a day, I'm not sure about two. . .

Hello, applying with Margrym Sees Through Shadow, a dwarf raised among the Shoanti and recently sent to Sandpoint following visions of his shaman.

Digger's previous Rise campaign disappeared with the GM. Here's hoping you like him.

Hi I submit Rascaliron dual cursed battle mysteries oracle with a pirate flair. Do check my profile.

This is Wolfman, all the details are on the profile page.

Grand Lodge

Thorgal Ironfist

Lawful Neutral Human Inquisitor of Pharasma 1

Str: 7, Dex:16 ,Con: 13, Int:12 , Wis:15 , Cha: 12

Feats: Point-Blank Shot, Precise Shot

Traits: Latent psion, Ease of faith, Missionary

Skills: Diplomacy +4, Perception+4 , Sense Motive +4, Knowledge Nature +4,

Knowledge Arcana +4, Knowledge Planes +4

Special Abilities: Judgement 1/day

Domain: Fate

Thorgal was born in the city of Magnimar. His parents died in a house fire, and little Thorgal was taken in by the local temple of Pharasma.
A short while ago, he was ordained as an inquisitor, to seek out and destroy evil, but also to spread the influence of Pharasma's church.
He is a tall, but slender man with a friendly face. Always thirsty for knowledge, he can often be found in a library, at a bard's recital, or a good deity’s temple. Because he is still a little insecure in his new role as an inquisitor, and because he acknowledges that his knowledge is still limited, he likes to work with other people. Thorgal does not have an overly agressive nature, preferring to solve a situation with diplomacy, if not dealing with evil folk.

There's no need to have all of the four "types" in the party, as long as the character's skills complement each other.

Presenting Squagbulbs, who was originally destined for a We Be Goblins game. This might be completely the wrong sort of character for this campaign, but I though I'd submit him anyway. Nothing ventured and all that...

Details on profile.

Reporting in and hoping to get in.

Just to let all know that I am here - been reviewing the applications. I'll post feedback as soon as I have it, but I already noticed there is some really nice stuff in here. Keep it coming!

HI all, and thank you for the submissions so far - here follows a short list:

Zelladania - Rogue
Noro Kasuri - Barbarian
Lisandra - cleric?
Vigal - Witch Doctor
Dorvren - Rogue (Chameleon)
Margrym - Druid (Lion Shaman)
Digger - Rogue (Charlatan)
Rascaliron - Oracle
Avarin - Fighter
Thorgal - Inquisitor
Squagbulbs - Wizard (Universalist)
Morande - Ranger

And some Q&A:

@Rascaliron
It would be nice to have a tie in as to why is he in Sandpoint?
Ilizmagorti Native trait seems a little out of place - perhaps replace it with one from the current AP?

@Vigal
Will you be posting some additional notes regarding background and personality?
I have seen a few discussions whether the Archetype could or should be applied to half-orc but nothing conclusive. In any case go for it - if later we find it unbalanced or something of the sort we'll deal with it.

@Digger Chandler
I am scared with what that Bluff +17 can do - seems sooo extravagant
Will you be adding some Background + Personality details?

@Squagbulbs
Don't take it in a bad way, but the goblin race is just wrong for this AP :D

Digger's backstory!:
Tock Chandler was born of a Taldan father and a Tian mother in Varisia. They were once successful traveling merchants, but when Tock was about three, he became very ill while they were between towns. They had to push their horses near to death to get him healing in time. They then decided to move permanently to a small town to raise their handsome son. Tock isn't sure if he blames them or himself more, then, for his boring life so far.

On the road, there was always someone who'd love to tell a great story to a young boy. Tock's favorite stories were all about Cayden Cailean. He marveled over how the human-cum-god went through life with nothing more than a sense of adventure and a chaotic tendency towards luck. As time went on he became a devout worshipper, though without a real cleric around, his theology isn't exactly orthodox. He loves nothing more than chaos and luck. He spreads it wherever he goes, constantly spinning tales about himself and the world around him.

Tock loves nothing more than telling a story. Whether it's meant to be fictional or a lie, he is in his element. He befuddled his parents as a child, getting away with more and more as time went on and they tired of trying to figure out "the truth." One day at the market, his convoluted reasonings on why he should be allowed to drink as much ale as he wants became so intense that there was no way to refute them.

Also at this market was Scarnetti, who was impressed with the youth's force of personality. He later dug up some information on the child and periodically kept tabs on the boy's development. When he reached 16, already tall and handsome as most any man, Tock was hired to work as a bartender at a tavern Scarnetti had influence upon.

His oft-stated goal is "to live the greatest story of all time." He generally believes in the greater good of life, for what is more chaotic than sapient life? However, he is a near-compulsive liar and cheat and hedonist. His ethics and moral code are flexible to say the least. His deepest dream, which he would never reveal, is actually to garner enough power to conquer the Starstone and join his hero in godhood.

Digger is tall, in great shape, and very handsome. He is frustratingly aware of these facts. His story-spinning is aided all the more with that charming smile. He has the medium-brown hair of his father, and the small but expressive eyes of his mother. He dresses stylishly, bordering on foppishly. He always makes eye contact and remembers people's names. He loves a good joke, and has almost perfected the art of friendly teasing.

However, he is conceited and sometimes downright spiteful. He feels a life of adventure is basically owed to him, and prefers the story of the Drunken God to the slow deterioration and death of his parents. He will not go out quietly, but he can hold a quiet grudge for years before acting upon it.

He enjoys creating other identities and disguises, filling each in with elaborate personalities and backstories. He seeks adventuring with characters fit for the greatest story of all time. His friendship is unswervingly loyal (unless it would make a REALLY good story).

Despite his demons and flaws, he does hate actual, true evil. His definition of it might just be a bit more specific than others'.

I'll get a backstory up tonight as I'm on the road today.

Thanks for the consideration!

Oops, forgot to add another trait. I'll go add one now. :)

WOrking on it as I get a time. I'll try and get the back story done tonight or tomorrow, but otherwise she is a Merciful Healer Cleric of Saranae.

Yep, I had initially intended to put up time frames for posting, like X times a day, between A and B, C and D, and E and F, but then I decided otherwise. The text you quoted was a spillover from my initial text. Apologies for that.

On a different note, I have noticed that most of you so far have gone with Neutral alignments, mainly CN. I would like to hear your overall perspective on how would your characters, thusly aligned, fit in and cooperate as a group.

Hey there

Dorvren is actually CG, his being CN is a typo, holdover from another time. For some reason everytime I try to change it it has failed to load the page. But it will be fixed...eventually.

GM do you want me to do an edited story for Dorvren, or is the Style good enough for you to make a decision. The gist of the character remains the same, I only put in the details about Tien-Xa and Jade Regent for that other AP, he is a character I want to play and have been editing him for AP's that he makes sense for.

He is a bit of a loaner, having grown up on the streets. He wants desperately to fit in with others, but has never had any stability in his life, and does not survive by the rules of society-hence the Chaotic, however he does have a very strong moral compass that points toward Good-hence the use of the Bludgeoner feat to do non lethal when he can.

In a group he will be very quiet, at first slowly opening up as he overcomes his nerves. In general he resorts to misdirection with others to avoid talking about himself. He is afraid to open up. But his desire to fit in, will push him to help the group as much as he can, as he learns who he is and what his future holds.

EDIT: added detail

Sczarni

Noro is actually only Chaotic becuase it is required for barbarian. I went neutral because of her problematic background. but Noro for the most part leans toward chaotic good alignment.

I would actually have no problem changing to CG alignment to better fit her evolving attitudes about life.

Well, Morande's a professional and will do her job to the best of her abilities when in a group. So once there's some clear guidelines as to what the group (ingame) will and will not do, she'll co-operate without worry.

Doesn't mean she'll be friendly about it, but that just fits with the gruff ranger archetype!

I've decided to change Zelladania to CG rather than CN. I think it fits better with how her attitude has changed since childhood and reflects her current search for gainful employment.

I'd like to submit Aoife (pronounced ee-fa - it's a Gaelic name), a half-elf synthesist summoner. Her background story and stats are in her profile. Her mother being a witch explains the other favored class and she may pick up a level or two of witch along the way.

I don't plan to play her as a 'super optimized synthesist' she's too much of a romantic :) Her deity is Lurue, she wants to focus more on a pegasus/unicorn style eidolin. Also, I want her to be a spell caster as well as an added melee combatant, her spells will not be focused solely on combat, but also on support.

I'd originally conceived of her as a Wild Caller (or First Worlder), which eliminates most of the troublesome evolutions, but there is some debate on the boards as to whether or not that's an allowed combination - I plan to play her close to that original conception. If you'd look at those and tell me if you're alright with the compatibility I'd prefer to do that (there aren't any conflicts in the actual abilities, Wild Caller restricts some of the evolutions as well as replacing summon monster with summon nature's ally.)

Sczarni

Noro changed to CG.

in all honesty I changed to CG because I felt it was better for her.

CN was what she may have been in the past but she has matured in her few years

Margrym is lawful because he has been raised with the disciplined training needed for a shaman of the Spire Clan. As a shaman, Margrym has rituals he is required to conduct and codified behaviors he must adhere to. Additionally, the vision of his mentor to enter the lands of the outsiders to help forestall a doom that threatens all of Varisia provides him with a specific duty he is tasked to see through. All of that defines the lawful part.

As for the good-evil axis, I don't see neutral between good and evil meaning that the character performs equally good and evil acts. The Spire Clan are the diplomats of the Shoanti and work for unity among the tribes. He has been raised to look out for the best interests of the Shoanti and not specifically the forces of good or evil. Although I think for the purposes of this AP that those will be pretty closely aligned with good.

Margrym should work very well within the group. His mentor's vision basically gives him a mission that requires him to work with outsiders (who might ordinarily not be supported by the Shoanti) for the greater good of his people and Varisia. As a shaman of the Spire clan, he is naturally predisposed to being a peacekeeper and should work actively for peace within the group. But, he will also be a bit of a fish out of water at first too which should present some interesting roleplay potential.

Digger is always looking for collaborators, co-conspirators, and interesting characters for stories. In the alignment scheme of things he leans further towards the chaotic than the neutral. In the end, the entire thing is nothing to him but a grand story, a fantastic, life-long game. He collects allies like misers collect coins. People are more useful that way. He therefore does whatever he can to stay within the society of others, while never forgetting to spread chaos and confusion and story and wonder wherever he goes.

Here's what I've put together so far. There are some holes to fill in and items to expand upon, but this should give you an idea.

Background:

Vigal, like most of his race, is the result of an unholy union between and orc and a human. However, slightly different than normal, his mother was an orc who forced herself upon a poor male woodsmen near her tribe's temporary encampment. Several months after the encounter, she suspected that she might be pregnant.

Uninterested in giving birth to a half-breed, she visited an orcish witch doctor for counsel. He examined her belly and confirmed that she was indeed pregnant, but that her child - a single boy -bore a sign of fate and should not be discarded. His mother did not care. She just wanted it out of her body. The witch doctor gave her some herbs, which almost instantly induced labor. Vigal was born several months premature, but was nursed to health by the witch doctor.

The witch doctor also served as his mentor and tutor, teaching him to read the signs and perform the duties of a tribe's sage. When he was just a teenager, the old orc carved two ornate symbols - one on each arm - into Vigal's skin. The pain was nearly unbearable. As soon as the cuts were made, Vigal realized that he had untapped further power. The witch doctor instructed that this power was to be found in his blood, and to unlock further potential, further scars would be required.

As Vigal approached adulthood, he became quite restless, eager to see what fate had in store for him. In the weeks before he left, the old orc helped him carve his own fetish mask, a further source of arcane power.

He made his way south from the Churlwood and arrived in the hold of Sandpoint on the eve of the Swallowtail Festival. Having traded with multiple races over the years, he was used to interacting with the others - though he wasn't exactly gifted at it. He secured lodging at The Rusty Dragon as he determined what his next step would be.

Personality:

Vigal is quiet and introspective by nature. Though he has dealt with other races, he is accustomed to only dealing with an old, curmudgeonly orcish witch doctor. As a result, he doesn't speak much for fear of being yelled at or insulted. He is still discovering the possibilities of his power and will eagerly discuss the topic with any who can provide guidance or wisdom.

Don't take it in a bad way, but the goblin race is just wrong for this AP :D

Fair enough - it was a long shot, anyway. Hope it goes well! :)

Hi.

Here is Brandon, a human alchemist.

I have submitted him for a Jade Regent campaign as well which means I need to select a campaign trait and his background is geared toward JR also. However, I can tweak it easily enough, I just wanted to get a submission in asap, I think you can see the concept I'm going for easily enough anyway.

Cheers.

Brandon is an unassuming, average looking Varisian man. Born and raised in the small town of Sandpoint, he does not dress garishly, is slim, of middling height and sporting a somewhat scruffy beard. Passers-by generally pay him no mind and those who do find him polite enough but unwiling to enter into extended conversation.

He spends his time studying in his makeshift lab or reading one of many voluminous tomes on anatomy, psychology, arcana or the natural world. He is quiet, he is shy, he is law-abiding, he is pleasant.

He is also dangerously schizophrenic.

Brandon's parents thought nothing was amiss when he started talking of his friend Edmond Harrow, assuming he was one of the other Sandpoint children. Brandon could often be heard in his room talking with his friend or would spend hours playing in the woods and swamp in the area with Edmond, seemingly learning from his friend about flora and fauna, how to set a deadfall and identify the tracks of deer, boar and wolf.

Brandon was surprisingly precious when it came to the subject of Edmond and the prospect of playing with other children at festivals and birthday parties was at best worrysome. At worst, having to interact with other, meaner children, made the small boy angry and lash out with sudden fury and unbelievable strength given his slight frame.

He was often bullied as a child because of his narrow chest and quiet way. A cocky young human girl called Ameiko Kaijitsu would often show up to deter the bullies with her brash way or a quick kick to the nether regions. One day however, Bran was cornered by three boys and beaten wickedly. He remembered the blows raining down and a boot blocking out the sun but awoke some time later surrounded by the battered bodies of his antagonists. The leader suffered a broken jaw and shoulder, his arm jutting out at an awkward angle. When he was asked what happened he could only answer that Edmond helped him After this particularly violent episode his parents sat him down and asked pointedly about his relationship with Edmond. In many ways they were relieved to learn the other boy was not real, just a figment of his imagination, a play-mate conjured from the recesses of his mind. Brandon was forbidden from ever mentioning Edmond again.

Shortly afterwards the fits started. The first time he simply fainted, apparently overcome by the summer heat. As the years passed the fits grew gradually worse into full seizures where his muscles would contract horribly, veins would bulge at his temples and often his father would force a leather belt between his teeth for fear he would bite through his own tongue. Distraught and a little fearful, the Harcroft's spent what money they had seeking advice from sages, sorcerors and learned men. None could provide an answer to the ailments he suffered and more worryingly his strength seemed to be growing every year, beyond what his thin arms seemed capable of. Worse, he often spoke in a voice that didn't sound his own, especially during his more frequent violent outbursts.

At age 15 Bran was prone to bouts of deep depression and would refuse to leave his room for days on end. Only his friend Ameiko would visit him and she was the only one he ever confided in that Edmond never left him, he still heard his voice in his head. All the other children in Sandpoint were afraid of him but Ameiko never judged him. She told him of her plans to leave Sandpoint with her friends in search of adventure and asked if he wanted to come along. He had never been so happy in his life.

Eventually, desperate, the Harcroft's took Brandon to see Niska Mvashti, the wise woman of over 100 hundred years old. If anyone had encountered Brandon's malody it would be her.

After witnessing one of his seizures, Niska and her daughter Koya declared they could not cure him. However, they offered to teach him all they knew about potion making, alchemy and the natural world in the hopes that he might find the means to control the voices and outbursts that plagued him through magic or chemistry.

He was devastated at not being able to accompany Ameiko but also found himelf enthralled with the knowledge he was gaining under the Mvashti tutilege. He spent the best part of ten years studying science and magic. He postulated often on his condition and created what he described as mutagens as a means to control it. He found his concoctions allowed him to remain conscious during his episodes and also gave him prodigious strength or almost limitless endurance. Whilst under the effects of the mutagens Edmond's presence was stronger than ever, a prospect that both terrifies and thrills him to this day.

Brandon is a man of science. He firmly believes that all divinity can be explained by magic which in turn can be manipulated, controlled and replicated by science. He feels there is nothing that cannot be explained, making him a slightly dour man but passionate about his field of expertise. He does not talk of his affliction and hides the fact that Edmond has lately taken on a personality of his own, often conversing with Brandon for extended lengths of time leaving him with a difficult relationship within his own mind...

Feeling that he has learned everything he can in Sandpoint and the occasional trip to Magnimar about both his condition and the means to control it, Brandon is seeking to broaden his horizons, expand his knowledge and master his strange and dangerous illness.

Presenting Daxtor Skreet, Ratfolk Wizard for consideration. Stats are in the profile and here is the background/personality info from there for easy reading. Please let me know of any questions you can think of!

Background:
Daxtor was born the runt of the litter in a small Ratfolk community in the slums of Westcrown. Ratfolk aren't particularly well-respected there, but Daxtor was smarter than most rats and managed to find his way into the apprenticeship of a fairly powerful elderly human Wizard. The Wizard was a great scholar of Thasilonian lore and Daxtor's thirst for knowledge found ample sustenance in the Wizard's employ. When the old man passed away, Daxtor scraped together what he had been able to save up and set out for Varisia to continue his master's studies. After stepping off the ship in Magnimar, he set out for the town of Sandpoint to seek out an old colleague of his master's who has heard lives here...

Description & Personality:
Daxtor is short for a ratfolk (about 3'10") and has a slim build. He's a darker brownish-grey in coloring with one beady little rat eye and a second eye covered by a patch. Daxtor lost his right eye on the streets of Westcrown when a thug tried to mug him one night on his way home from his schooling. Though the assailant got first blood, Daxter knocked him unconcious with a Color Spray spell and slit the man's throat with his own knife. Growing up on the streets has toughened him up quite a bit and he has no problem killing if necessary, though he doesn't typically go out looking for trouble. Some time after, his master gave him a gift of a glass eye, which he treasured so much that he has made it into his Arcane Focus. Daxtor's most prevalent trait is his voracious thirst for knowledge and his interest in Thasilonian lore.

Submitting Baldur Hrafnasil, dwarven paladin of Abadar, for consideration.

I'm thrilled to see another Runelords AP being run. I humbly submit Valerius Moonstone, Elven Wizard from Magnimar.

been a quiet thread lately

I am letting the applications stack, but I am here Dorvren

Your avatar and that particular post was perfectly apropos and creepy.

I am currently ignoring the man behind the curtain

When I get home I'll whip up a character. It'll be a dwarven fighter moving towards the Dwarven Defender prestige class. He'll either be LG or NG.

Sczarni

Dwarven defender in pathfinder is now called Stalwart defender. has some modified abilities but is generally the same. (I think its in the APG.

BTW I love that class I currently am playing a dwarf fighter going that route in another game.

for example you stance is now in rounds per day like a barbarian rage.

BTW still continued interest in this game.

You're right; I typed Dwarven Defender without even thinking about it. Are any of PF's prestige classes still race specific?

Dorvren's RotR Backstory

Backstory:

Dorvren grew up as an orphan in Sandpoint. He learned to survive by his wits, and keeping out of sight. When he was 15 he found himself caught trying to steal food from a stand in Sandpoint. As Dorvren was talking his way out of it, there was a middle aged man watching and laughing all the while. After getting away and melting into the shadows, Dorvren turned and Titus stood there quietly applauding.

Titus told Dorvren that he was amused and impressed by his wit, not to mention how quickly he disappeared. Dorvren recognized him immediately as the embattled nobleman Titus Scarnetti.
Titus recognized a potential tool to be used in the future and before he left Dorvren to his own devices he gave Dorvren a suit of armor, telling him to learn to make that his second skin, and when he returned he would teach him how to fight. Dorvren spent many days and nights uncomfortable in the armor, but assuming it was some kind of test he kept at it, until he barely noticed that he has it on. Over the coming years every few weeks Titus would secret Dorvren into his manor and teach how to fight, how to steal, how to talk his way out of anything. He became Dorvren's mentor, though not a loving one. Over the years Titus has used Dorvren to gather information for him and recover various items for him, counting on Dorvren’s apparent innocence to keep him from being tied to Titus if he was caught doing something not quite on the up and up.
For years Dorvren prepared. Mastering his abilities at Stealth and Fast talking. He became a master of non-lethal fighting, for despite Titus’s less than noble jobs, Dorvren’s moral compass points toward good. He simply has grown up knowing nothing different.
