Rise of the Runelords Table 2 (Closed)

Game Master ElegantlyWasted

Greetings, friends! Sadly, one of our players had to bow out due to RL issues. He played a Paladin and was a heck of a front-liner.

We're looking to replace him with another martial type.

Here's all the relevant info!

Format and Expectations:

The format will be Play by Post, if that wasn't obvious!
Posting expectations are one post per day from every player. Weekends are exempt but I will post on weekends, so if you're free we'll get through stuff that much faster! If something comes up and you won't be able to post for a while, that's just fine. Just let me know, and we'll work something out.

Character Generation:

Just to get it clear, no third-party material will be allowed.

Attributes: Roll 2d6+6 six times on this thread, or 20 point buy, whichever is higher! You may assign the results however you wish.

Races: Corr preferred. Featured races from ARG are also fair game. Anything else will be a case-by-case basis. Racial archetypes and alternate traits from Paizo are all kosher.

Classes: Core/APG preferred. I have not yet read through Occult Adventures or Path of War, so those classes will not be available. All other Paizo is available, though Summoners must play the Unchained variant, and Gunslingers are restricted to the Bolt Ace archetype.

Traits: Two traits. One must be a campaign trail from the Rise of the Runelords Player's Guide. A third trait may be taken if you take a drawback. However, the drawback must be explained in your character background. Which leads me to my next subject...

Backgrounds: At the least, I would like a 10-Minute Background. Candidates that have both that and a regular background consisting of a few paragraphs will be considered most strongly. If you're having trouble with your character background send me a PM! We'll work on something.

Skills: We will be using background skills. We will also be using one consolidated skill- Athletics, replacing Acrobatics (jumping), Climb and Swim.

Starting Level: You will start at Level 2.

Starting Wealth: 500 GP

Recruitment will be open until I have someone I like. Good luck.

Are you looking specifically for another paladin, or just another melee character in general? I have a couple of ideas I might decide to try out. I've got a character in mind that could work as a paladin or inquisitor, as well as a brawler that once in a game of RotRL that died previously. I played through part of Book 1, the last thing that happened that I remember was finding the skeletons underneath the church, and I got into a fight with some Sczarni. Depending on what specifically you're looking for I can have a character up pretty shortly.

Nah, doesn't have to be a Paladin. Just a viable front-line type.

Cool. How do you feel about a character who may not be... all there, so to speak? It's up to you how far this goes, but the idea is an inquisitor of Ragathiel who believes himself to be (or possibly even is, up to you) one of the god's scions given mortal flesh. He'd be an Aasimar and I'd likely take a couple levels in Fighter as well, and pick up some of the Aasimar racial feats to get things like wings. Whether or not the kid is nuts or not can be decided, but regardless that is what he believes to be true about himself.

That work for you as a concept?

common dice Gods: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 2) + 6 = 14
common dice Gods: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 4) + 6 = 16
common dice Gods: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 5) + 6 = 16
common dice Gods: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 1) + 6 = 9
common dice Gods: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 3) + 6 = 13
common dice Gods: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 6) + 6 = 18

Keeping those, 24 point buy

Sure, that concept sounds pretty neat!

I'd also be interested in this.

I'm looking at creating a Half Orc Fighter using a tower shield. The character would be from Janderhoff where it has been raised by a priestess of Folgrit (dwarven goddess of motherhood and children). She'd have done it in part out of pity for the poor child and in part to prove to her fellows that she could turn even a Half Orc into a proper "Dwarf" with the correct care and education.

How much would it cost me to buy a Boar? A pig is 10 gold

If it's as a pet, use the Pig cost. If it's for combat price it as a Riding Dog.

Raltus wrote:

According to Animal Archive it costs 100 gp or 150 gp if combat trained.

Forgot my rolls:

2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 4) + 6 = 11
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 5) + 6 = 14

Ah well there you go then, don't have that book :p

Grand Lodge

Damn, Ok I will alot 100g for that I guess, maybe a Mountain goat instead haah

Well now, I played this character in another runelords game that had to end.

we were just starting book two when we had to end.

I can adjust back a few levels though

10 min background:

Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the
character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a
personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind. 5 is just a minimum...more elements
are encouraged!
1. Wears a grease stained smock
2. His parents were smiths but he was taken to be a Stone Lord
3. He is jovial about most things, but when time comes can be very serious
4. He is tall for his kind, it always was a sore spot
5. His beard is braided, not open like other dwarves.

Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the
character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course
of the game.
To be dutiful and astute in his posting as Stone Lord at the New Cathedral in Sandpoint.
For him to realize that at times staying home to protect is not always the best.

Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be
aware of, so expect some surprises!
{unknown} His father paid to have him taken into the Stone Lords, his family was on hard times and
he didn’t want his son to suffer. {Known} His parents were hard working and had made the Armor for the
prince instead of the royal smities.

Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the
character, one is hostile. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant
NPC nemesis to throw at you.
Friendly – The Local smithy, he knows that I am coming to town and knows that I want to work
with him on designing my own armor. The local Deverins, my family out sourced some materials from
them and did some work for them.
Enemy – The other guardians of the Faithful in Sandpoint, they are not happy a Dwarven Stone Lord is
being send to help them out.

Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be
elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.
1. He always wears a smock over his armor; it may have the bib up or down. It is always greasy.
2. He is out to protect people and takes his post as a Stone Lord seriously.
3. He likes to add designs and such to armor and shield.

Spoiler:

Trag was late, he was supposed to be in Sandpoint a week before the opening of the Cathedral and he
was very late. His mother had been sick and he had stayed to help his father tend to the forges before
he left.
Gutripper had been unruly on the whole ride from the 5 Kings Mountains to Sandpoint. Being attacked
along the way by a group of bandits didn't help either.

2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 1) + 6 = 10
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 2) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 6) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 3) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 6) + 6 = 15
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 2) + 6 = 9

That is 19pts, awesome /s

guess if I want to compete, best roll some new stats to start

2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 3) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 4) + 6 = 15
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 2) + 6 = 12
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 3) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 2) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 4) + 6 = 14

it seems ok. (23 point buy) will work on new stats.

2nd level hp roll 1d12 ⇒ 1 ok so that sucks, guess its half+1 for me

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Athletics combines 2 strength skills and a dex skill... so what stat is it based on?

This is JAF0, here is my character... everything is in his profile, including background and 10-minute background. Hope you like him.

hit points 2nd lvl: 1d10 ⇒ 7

Athletics is based off of Strength. Do note, however, that Athletics ONLY covers the Jumping aspect of Acrobatics; balance and tumbling is still the normal Acrobatics skill and is based off of dex.

2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 6) + 6 = 16
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 3) + 6 = 11
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 4) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 1) + 6 = 10
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 3) + 6 = 12
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 3) + 6 = 11

That comes out to 19, so I'll go ahead and build with point-buy. I was thinking about having my character take a level in fighter now for more HP and feats, but I'll hold off on the few fighter levels I'm planning for a little bit.

HP: 1d8 ⇒ 4

EDIT: Do you allow variant heritages for aasimars (e.g. Angel Blooded, etc.), and do you allow rolling for alternate racial abilities either with the feat or without it?

Variants are fine. You may roll twice and choose a result (or stick with the base)

Thinking of a straight up sword and board TWF Fighter.
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 6) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 2) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 5) + 6 = 16
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 2) + 6 = 10
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 5) + 6 = 15
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 6) + 6 = 16

1d10 ⇒ 2

Gotta neat idea for an unchained barbarian I wanna see if i can flesh out.

2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 3) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 6) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 5) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 5) + 6 = 12
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 6) + 6 = 17
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 3) + 6 = 12

oh wow, yeah. Definetly keeping these numbers.

HP: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

average +1 it is

OK... a few changes made... I think he's ready now.

edit: just saw your decision on variant rolls, so here are mine:

variant aasimar abil.: 1d100 ⇒ 42
variant aasimar abil.: 1d100 ⇒ 67

Here's hoping. :)

2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 2) + 6 = 10
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 3) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 2) + 6 = 9
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 3) + 6 = 15
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 3) + 6 = 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 3) + 6 = 14

Not bad, but that's still a 17 point buy so 20 it is.

Please take a look at my CS here. I believe it is complete. A straight up fighter built to punish and to take punishment.

Also, because background can be difficult to read on that CS, here it is:

Spoiler:

Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the
character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a
personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind. 5 is just a minimum...more elements are encouraged!
1. Kyli’s father was killed by giants when she was young.
2. She carried on the farm work and hired out to others to support her mother.
3. She carries the great axe that was her father’s.
4. Her mother and she moved to the outlands of Sandpoint to be closer to civilization.
5. She has platinum eyes and blond hair.

Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the
character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.
1. Start a knighthood/mercenary company in Sandpoint.
2. I would like to see Kyli grow into a symbol of hope for those that are too weak to defend themselves, especially females.

Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be
aware of, so expect some surprises!
1. (known secret) Kyli was shirking her chores when the giants attacked that killed her father. If she was where she was suppose to be, her father would not have had to aid her without his weapons.
2. (unknown secret) Her platinum eyes are a physical trait that marks visitors from other worlds that were trapped on Golarion at Earthfall.

Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the
character, one is hostile. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.
Friendly – 1. Daviren Hosk at the Goblin Squash Stables, whom she helps from time to time. 2. Shalelu Andosana, whom she idolizes and maybe has a crush on
Enemy – Shayliss Vinder, who is everything she is not

Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.
1. She giggles when trying to hide her fear, as a coping mechanism.
2. She gets extremely red in the face when she gets even slightly embarrassed.
3. She is just starting to find herself in the world, she has lofty dreams but feels torn by duty to her mother and going out and making her dreams a reality.

I was born to a human father and elven mother not too far distant from the town of Ravenmoor in Varisia. My parents had a passionate love, and chose the simple life of farmers so they could be left alone. My father was mercenary before meeting my mother, he wielded a great axe for coin but he did not start out that way. At first, he wanted to be part of a knightly order, to help those that could not help themselves. But even the most noble of intentions need to eat, and he was paid well for his blade. Not too long after that, he met my mother and settled down.

Fifteen years into my life, I was sent to do my chores in the fields. I have always been a good rider and animal husbandry was second nature, and I helped every day in the fields. But I would often shirk my chores and end up by the creek. I loved the feeling of the fresh water on my skin and lazily dozing the afternoons away. Until the giants came. I was at the creek that day when, making slow laps with my ears underwater so as the world was mute to me. The next thing I remember was an unnatural wave pushing against me. I opened my eyes to see the most terrifying thing, a giant wading in after me. I screamed and rushed to the shoreline. I would not have made it in time but my father was working the fields near me and rushed to my aid. He lept at the monster with nothing but his shears. The distraction was enough for me to stumble to the shore and flee to the house with nothing but my small clothes on. Upon returning to the creek later, we found nothing but blood and the shears. I never did tell my mother that I had caused the death of my father. If I was at work, instead of playing, we both would have retreated to the house.

Shortly thereafter we moved to the outlands of Sandpoint, to be closer to civilization. We bought a small acreage and together we worked it. The labor hardened my muscles and tones my body. I trained with my father’s axe, vowing to defend those who could not defend themselves and dreaming of starting my own knighthood - to fulfill the dream of my father. But in the meantime, I worked the farm, as mentioned, and hired out to others to bring in extra income. I would often work at the Sandpoint stables for Daviren Hosk, as I was good with the horses.

One of my favorite things is when Shalelu comes around. She is probably my favorite person in the world, after my mother. I could listen to her tales for hours. I admit that there is some hero worship there, and maybe something a little more. I do not know, I am very confused about it. I still day dream that one day she and I will adventure together. Maybe she can be my first recruit into my knighthood!

Of course, there are those I have difficulties with as well. The Vinder girl especially. I do not know why she bothers me so much but I must bother her too because she never misses an opportunity to taunt me or call a boy to her when I may have his attention. She also often calls me “freak” because of my eye color. It is what it is but people often ask me if I have celestial blood in me. I wish. I know I shouldn't take easy offense by her childish name calling but I get flushed really easily which adds to my embarrassment. I need to get stronger and not let her bother me.

Until that time, I will laugh in the face of danger, even though it is a nervous laugh. Perhaps someday it will be a real laugh! And I will continue towards my goals, and the goal of my father. To defend those that cannot defend themselves and become an icon, a hero to girls all around Varisia. I am Kyli Kanan, and I will not fail… I hope.

Rage (Ex) - +2 bonus on melee attack rolls, melee damage rolls, thrown weapon damage rolls, and Will saving throws. In addition, she takes a –2 penalty to Armor Class. She also gains 2 temporary hit points per Hit Die. These temporary hit points are lost first when a character takes damage, disappear when the rage ends, and are not replenished if the barbarian enters a rage again within 1 minute of her previous rage. While in a rage, a barbarian cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skill (except Acrobatics, Fly, Intimidate, and Ride) or any ability that requires patience or concentration (such as spellcasting).

A barbarian can end her rage as a free action, and is fatigued for 1 minute after a rage ends. A barbarian can’t enter a new rage while fatigued or exhausted, but can otherwise enter a rage multiple times per day. If a barbarian falls unconscious, her rage immediately ends.

Accurate Stance (Ex) - The barbarian can focus her strikes. She gains a +1 competence bonus on melee attack rolls and thrown weapon attack rolls. This bonus increases by 1 for every 4 levels the barbarian has. This is a stance rage power.

Uncanny Dodge (Ex) - A barbarian gains the ability to react to danger before her senses would normally allow her to do so. She cannot be caught flat-footed, nor does she lose her Dexterity bonus to AC if immobilized. A barbarian with this ability can still lose her Dexterity bonus to AC if an opponent successfully uses the feint action against her.

Her mother was a singer and often performed in cities their merchant clan traveled too. She was teaching Sumana to sing as well.
She never knew her father. Her mother said he was one of the guards for the caravan and died protecting everyone from a bandit raid. Others in the caravan never spoke of her father when asked.
Among the Silver Stags, Sumana specializes in hunting monsters and other large creatures.
Sumana has long strawberry blonde hair, shaved to stubble on the lower left side. Some of her Varisian tattoos go over this spot. She has multiple piercings on her ears.
She has two items of great importance to her: first is a silver locket she wears at all times around her neck, inside is picture of her with her mother. The second is part an owlbear claw she wears as an earring in her right ear. The owlbear was the first mission she did with the Silver Stags and she views it as a good luck totem.
Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the
character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course

To track down and defeat the monster that killed her clan.
I would love to see her find as much peace as one can as a barbarian.

This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be

Known: Sumana suffers from bloodlust, though is afraid to admit it. She finds herself craving battle and sometimes puts herself into more dangerous situations than she should.
Unknown: She is the monster that killed her clan.
Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the
character, one is hostile. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.
“Sir” Razo Lionsbane, leader of the Silver Stags Mercenary Group and Sumana’s surrogate father.
Lyra Silversmith, merchant daughter to a smith in Sandpoint and Sumana’s best friend.
Lux Blueblade, city guardsman and one of Sumana’s ex-lovers who didn’t realize “just tonight” meant “just tonight.”
Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be
elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.
She’s dense and “unlady-like”. She’s unafraid to drink her friends under the table and sometimes takes her a moment or half a conversation to realize that now is not the best time to discuss certain topics.
She’s afraid of commitment. The scars of losing her family and clan when she was only ten have her seeing the fleetingness of things. Afraid to get too close to someone, she can be free giving at times with things like love.
She’s untrusting of magic users. Her clan had an old sorcerers that scared her as a child, often giving her nightmares. Once she joined the Silver Stags, the magic users employed there always seemed to have an alternate agenda that took priority over their fellow Stags.

Liberty's Edge

Well, I have an Unchained Monk who's been yearning for some RotRL action.
What: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 6) + 6 = 17

Ah, so I don't need the feat at all to take the alternate abilities?

Aasimars don't need a feat for the alternate heritage. It's tieflings that do (something I think is really stupid).

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I think the requirement for tieflings to get alternate heritage has been nerfed...they no longer need it either... at least they don't if you get a tiefling in PFS... I suppose outside of pfs, it's up to the GM.

I've never required it because...yeah, it's dumb.

@GM: would you allow the Master of Many Styles Archetype for the Unchained Monk?

It replaces the Bonus Feats, Flurry of Blows and Perfect Self abilities which are identical to the Normal Monk...

Hey Wasted,

Are you OK with unconventionally played Pallys... so some wiggle room in terms of morality, tone, and actions? Or do you prefer the squeaky-clean, forthright, super LG model?

Hmm, alright. I'm still waffling a little on whether to take my second level in Inquisitor or take a Fighter level...

Hey, this is JDPhipps's submission. I'm not quite done with him, but I just had another question or two.

First, are Skill Unlocks or Combat Stamina available for this game? I saw that you had Background Skills available, but I'm curious if you're open to any other Unchained optional rules. I'm planning to build for an Intimidate build in combat (Ragathiel is the General of Vengeance, and I figure I should be no different). Skill unlocks for Intimidate are really useful, but if not that's okay. If you are using Combat Stamina, do Fighters get it for free?

Are you alright with the Signature Moves trait?

Skill Unlocks are okay, as long as you take the Signature Skill feat.

Most of the party has Masterwork weapons at this point so if you want to use a Trait for that go right ahead.

Combat Stamina for fighters is fine by me.

Would you consider the Master of Many Styles archetype compatible witn the Unchained Monk?

Also, Is combat Stamina available to non-fighters through a feat? Or just not at all?

Thanks!

Per Paizo, only archetypes that state they are compatible with Unchained Monk may be used.

If you want to take a feat for Combat Stamina, go ahead.

Okay. Thanks everyone for expressing interest; I'm going to take two of you (my other ROTRL game has seven so I'll only have to later the AP once and can use it for both groups :P). Uriel, Valgwyn, pop on over to discussion and we'll start talking about how to get you into the game. Thanks again for expressing interest; I hope I'll see you in other games!
