Rise of the Runelords - GM Pablo (Inactive)

Game Master Stetrix

Something is afoot in Varisia. There have been a series of odd murders in a small town on the west coast called Sand Point and more recently the capital Magnimar, where even the lord-mayor was a target. A cult of serial murderers called the Skinsaw Men was uncovered and stopped. We have also received reports of more activity along the border.

I would like you to go see the lord-mayor of Magnimar. Assure him the Pathfinder society will do what we can to help him. Investigate these goings on and see if there is a common thread to all this unrest. We have a lot of interests in Varisia and would like to maintain the good graces of the government. I doubt the lord mayor will have you sitting around for long. It is a big place and inevitably something will need attention.

So how does that sound? A mission without a precise goal and with no guarantee of coin. Ha! Are you up for it?

As if on queue the intolerable rain starts to come down more heavily, washing the blood coated walls and courtyard into reddish pools. The courtyard is muddy and difficult to move through.

After spending some time healing at a bit of rest, you realize no more Ogres or a Lamia are coming out of the Fort. With caution you proceed with a room by room search. You are unable to find the Lamia and appears she fled.

The scene inside and out is macabre. Room after room of dead mutilated rangers. Outside you find a giant cooking pot with six rangers inside boiling. Dead rangers hang from trees, nailed to walls, hung from beams upside down to be bled dry into large buckets like chandlers, some are even taxidermied, corpses lie bloated and bones of the dead lie in piles where ogres have eaten away all the meat. Heads of dead rangers are everywhere mounted on spears their milky eyes staring back at you.

You find Kaven still alive, but unconscious where he fell.

Scanning the rooms and dead ogres very carefully you find (Treasure sheet updated).

7 sets of large +1 hide armor
6 +1 ogre hooks,
50 large javelins
20 large longbows
A necklace of shriveled women's hands, each adorned with shiny copper rings. 21 of the rings are worth 10 gp each, while the 22nd is actually a ring of animal friendship
potions of cure serious wounds (3)
Large + 1 human bone ogre hook
Belt of giant strength +2
Wand of acid arrow with (43 charges)
Amulet of natural armor +1
Headband of alluring charisma +2
Ring of protection +1
Pair of soft green leather boots - The boots are a pair of boots of the mire.
You also find several maps several of which seem interesting or valuable:
- One detailing several of the smugglers' tunnels beneath Riddleport (worth so gp to
a smuggler)
- One detailing the first few poisonous levels of Viperwall (worth 400 gp to an interested party)
- One of the hidden paths of Lurkwood's interior (worth 700 gp to explorers set on investigating the mistshrouded woods).

Tiny jewelry box hidden in Commander Lamatar of the Black Arrows quarters. The coffer contains dozens and dozens of parchment sheets, all containing beautifully-written love sonnets to someone named "Myriana," who (if the sonnets are to be believed) is so beautiful that the moon itself was "blinded when it spied her dancing on the tarn," and who is "the truest grace to know Whitewillow's soft embrace." Using Knowledge (geography) you realize that "Whitewillow" is a
section ofthe Shimmerglens said to be particularly close to one of the portals to the First World.
The jewelry box contains a silver locket on a chain; inside the locket is a lock of silky golden hair. KN Nature check please (DC22)
You find stacks of the rangers swords, daggers, long bows, arrows, armor and clothes.

Vale and Jakardros agree that Lamatar did in fact leave Fort Rannick for 2 to 3 days at a time, once each month, on what he called his "communion walks," lone treks made through the region, supposedly to put him closer to the realm he had been charged to guard. Jakardros notes that
the commander was on just such a walk the night the attack on Fort Rannick came, which further indicates that treachery was involved. How would the ogres have known when exactly to strike the fort unless one of the Black Arrows told them when their commander was leaving the fort for a night? Both Jakardros and Vale become hopeful upon learning of Lamatar's affair, and cling to the possibility that their beloved commander may yet live, and is only hiding out in Whitewillow. Perhaps preparing to strike back against the ogres.

With the ogres slaughtered to the last you have liberated Fort Rannick. Yet the Order of the Black Arrows remains dead; Vale and Jakardros alone cannot carry the torch, as much as they
might wish to-they'll need help. Although Fort Rannick was built by funds from Magnimar over 4 decades ago, it's been under the jurisdiction of Turtleback Ferry for most of that time.

Jakardros pleads for yet another favor - someone needs to go to Turtlebak Ferry and tell they mayor what has happened, gather forces quickly to protect the fort should there be a counter attack.

Silver Crusade

"I've been here in Naga. Could not bear to stay away from the magic day - probably stop somewhere probably in the eyes of the castle. We might be able to catch him now, if we look at this law circular tower,
but it may be difficult because of the area - Oh, and, indeed, a kind of sense that it is a form of leverage it will be difficult to guess what is in the law. Perhaps a giant snake or human, though. So, if we leave now do we get before it gets away. It can be useful, but it is also dangerous. Jakardros? what to do what do you think?"

Jakardros takes a grim assessment of the situation.

"We need to contact Turtleback Ferry and advise Magnimar of what has transpired and we are in dire need of reinforcements. I need a volunteer to go with all haste to Turtleback Ferry and secure reinforcements. I do not know if the Kreegs will mount a counter attack, but we are ill prepared if they do. Can any of you contact Magnimar and let them know as well - we will need men and funds to rebuild our damaged fort."

Area B7
"A vile pool of sewage sits at the base of a nook in the wall. The pool drains through a two-foot-wide sluiceway in the wall to the creek beyond, but a body of a Ranger is lodged headfirst inside it."

"The dead need to be cleaned up and properly burned with the rights which is our custom. The ogres should be burned as well, separately to prevent disease ...or worse. Starting a funerary pyre for all the dead will be a challenge in the deluge."

"We will take Kaven and he will suffer the Ranger punishment for the traitor he is. I beg that you not interfere. His headless corpse will be burned with his Ogre allies"

"The front gate is damaged. The ogres did their best to repair the doors , but until an actual skilled carpenter works on them, they'll remain in sad condition. They cannot be locked, but they don't open easily. It won't be a problem for a group of Ogres to push their way in again."

Area B9
"The cascade is the fort's primary source of fresh water and are coming in polluted by something."

"The inside of the fort is a festering mess with entrails, body parts and blood. We need to clean it top to bottom before the reinforcements arrive. I'd like to prevent the stench and disease as well as keep their morale up if at all possible."

He points at Area B5 (the pile of rubble) and several large dead eagles around the fort.
"The tunnel beyond winds up to a ledge that overlooks the fort, 120 feet up the cliff face above. This ledge rises a further 450 feet to a tor that once served as the nesting
ground for a group of giant eagles allied with the Black Arrows. I'd like to know what happened to them and if any survived."

"Chasing the Lamia now is ill advised. We need to shore up the defenses here, rest which we all need, especially the spell casters. Shalelu, my step-daughter is blind and needs healing if you can please. I am sure the Lamia is headed to hook mountain to report to the Kreeg Clan. She is a shape shifter and catching her will be near impossible in this rain on foot. I'd also like to find the commander and get reinforcements before an assault on the Kreeg clan directly. When will this damnable rain stop!!"

Silver Crusade

shakes off confusion

What I meant to say was:

If I were the naga I would be getting out of here. Her teleport spell can't carry her that far - she'd probably come out somewhere almost in sight of the fort. We might be able to catch her if we leave now and circle the fort looking for tracks, but it could be tricky because of the area covered - oh, and the fact that she's a shapeshifter of some kind means that it might be tricky to guess what kind of tracks she's leaving. Probably human or giant snake, though. So, if we leave now
we might be able to catch her before she gets away. It might be worth doing, but it is also risky. Jakardros? What do you think?

Jakardros thinks for a minute and then says "Well if she is a large shapeshifter, she probably turned into a large flying creature, like Cela did as an eagle, and is already miles away."

After a short rest and some food, Jakardros and Vale start silently, but reverently together gathering the Ranger dead and laying them in neat rows in the old barracks (which you can tell is very unstable).

After an hour Lumpy rises again from the dead-undead. And stands ready for Sekkimm's orders.

Scarab Sages

Male Human Magus L8/Brawler L1/Bloodrager L1

First thing Buchart does is collect his wand from the wall. Then some water from his waterskin, then some brandy to fight off the effects of the rain.

Might as well use Lumpy for body collection. I will assist, of course. I would like to collect some large arrows after that. The booty can wait, as far as I'm concerned. And some can be used for rebuilding the fort.

Do we find anything else of value on the ogre corpses? Buchart then walks up and gives Lumpy a pat on the shoulder and says,

Good fighting, big guy!

He then gives a bit of a grinace amd looks for a clean place to wipe his hand.

Though I'm no fan of undead, I like what you'be done with him Sekkimm!

The Rangers perfer Lumpy be used to remove the heavy ogres and place them in a large pile outside of the fort.

By nightfall the dead have been sorted and placed in their separate areas. Kaven is left unconscious and locked in a cell to be delt with at dawn. Is anyone going to Turtleback Ferry or contacting Magnimar (Lady Heidmarch)

Before the casters rest they ask if you have any spells that will start very large funerary fires?

Yes the silver raven returned just before you entered the cave. Lady Sheila asked you to try t take the fort and report back.
