Foxglove Manor

The sheriff frowns as Garbund aproaches.

"A goblin and a tattooed half-orc, whats next?", he mutters, "What tribe are you two from? Is this some kind of reconnaissance mission!?", he shakes Squeeze.

Before Ansgar is able to intervene, another voice is heard.

"Sheriff, i think this is a simple misunderstanding.", says a middle-aged man in cerimonial clothing as he aproaches the group. "They seen to be here just to enjoy the festival."

Sheriff Hemlock lowers Squeeze to the ground, but still holds him.

"Father Zantus, i...We surely can't let any other unpleasantness happen, not today, and you know how the gobs have been recently."

"I don't sense any evil in this two, sheriff, i believe your caution would be better directed to other places."

"I'll trust you on this one, Father.", he gives Garbund and Squeeze a final stare before walking away. "You two better live up to this man's expectations, enjoy the festival."

"Forgive the sheriff. He's a good man, but has to be on edge while everyone else relaxes. He's not blessed with the same short memory as the other townsfolk."

---

"Well maybie you should show them how its done, then? Show what my arrows are capable of, maybie earn some silver? Unless of course you're afraid to fail and tarnish your reputation?", she answers Kalais, in friendly banter. "Oh, Viridi, good morning, didn't knew you two were friends. How is your mom doing? I haven't seen her this morning."

After the response, the finally turns to Sable. "Oh, greetings, i believe i would remember seeing you around here. Are you a Black Arrow as well?"

About five archers shoot arrows while some others wait for their turns, the five ready their arrows and bolts and shoot, either missing or barely hitting their targets, Savah sighs. "Oh, how i wish Shalelu was here..."

"Well, we just met today..." Viridi starts before shrugging. "Anyway, Mom's doing well enough--she was anxiously waiting for an old friend of hers to deliver some rare texts. I think she'll be spending the better part of the festival catching up with him."

Savah wrote:

Viridi looks over at the other archery participants. "I think they're doing well enough for themselves--"

She's interrupted by a cry of surprise from the crowd. One of the archers missed his target very badly--the arrow flies over the target and sticks into the building behind it.

Viridi claps her hands over her mouth and winces. "Oh dear... Mr. Podiker's not going to like that..."

Garbund bows politely at the departing sheriff.
"I woudn't want to be on his bad side!"
"He'd give old Antoul a run for his money!"

Then he has a quick work with Squeeze.
« Poskusite obdržati v težave, Stisnite. »
« Dolge krače imajo različne vrste zabave. »
« Poskusite kopirati svojo zabavo. Ni Škrat zabavo! »

Goblin:
"Try o keep out of trouble, squeeze."
"Long shanks have different kinds of fun."
"Try to copy their fun. Not goblin fun!"

"I hope I don't profoundly regret giving him advice."
"Phéde would get a belly laugh if she could see this!"

"Black Arrows?" Sable smirks over at Kalais, remembering how cagey the ranger had been when Sable had asked her who her superiors were. "No, just a sword for hire."

Before she can say any more, she witnesses perhaps the most spectacular miss she's ever seen.

"I was going to say that every archer was a novice once... but maybe you do have a point," she admits to Kalais. She gives a thoughtful hum. "Though I suppose overshooting shows more promise than falling shy of the target."

Glad I stayed back, no point in all three of us getting on the sheriff's bad side.

Stepping forward towards the other two, Ansgar addresses Father Zantus,

"Father, the sheriff had mentioned current goblin activities, aside from Squeeze here. What exactly was he talking about?"

Female Plumekith Aasimar (Scion of Humanity) Ranger (Ilsurian Archer, Infiltrator) 1 | HP 12/12 | AC:18 T:13 FF:15 CMD:16 | F:4 R:5 W:3 | Resist Acid 7, Cold 7, Electric 7 | Initiative +3 | Sense Motive +10 | Perception +7 | Darkvision 60ft.

For her part, Kalais initially seems to withdraw into her ale, choosing to ignore Savah's waffling praise as she watches the line hoist their bows and fire pointlessly across the range. If mention of the Order doesn't fuel her irritation, the rogue arrow certainly does, and at the latter she promptly shifts to let her gear fall from her shoulders, the large pack landing with a clatter of metal pitons, arrows, and steel.

"Overshooting implies something resembling aim in the first place," she answers Sable, choosing to dust the matter of her allegiance under a proverbial carpet. Her mug gestures to the wide shot in the wall. "That? Not aiming. Plenty dangerous though." She pauses a beat before adding much more thoughtfully: "...And sort of expensive after the first couple dozen times, honestly..."

Shrugging that off, Kalais sips a little more of her drink before placing it down between her boots, unslinging her bow to fiddle with the string. Without the weight of her gear on, the 5'5" ranger suddenly looks that much smaller--especially so in the relatively towering shadows of Viridi and Sable--but Kalais doesn't care.

"So you two in or what?" she asks, mirroring the Kaer Magan's smirk. "Because unless Andosana catches the scent of goblin and comes in bow-blazing, this might be a boring watch."

Viridi swallows nervously. "Well... I'm not the most comfortable with bows, but I think I can take up a crossbow for this."

Squeeze shakes his head, with both of his eyes wide open towards the sheriff and Zantus. Finally, when the sheriff departs and the religious man quickly speaks with them, Squeeze takes some steps and profoundly and friendly hugs his leg - unfortunately, though, while still covered in mud.

Thanks! Squeeze friendly, good man friendly to Squeeze! And you don't even look old enough to have that big guy as your son!

He lets the man depart away, then hears with attention Garbund's recommendations.

Goblin:

Squeeze understands! - he says, continuing almost immediately - Squeeze should make fun of longshanks by mimicking them. Squeeze good in it!

He almost immediately starts moving around as some sort of monkey, whispering "Oog oog Squeeze long legs! Oog oog Squeeze likes dogs and horses! Oog oog Squeeze needs tools to eat with Squeeze skinny long fingers! Squeeze's belly is very sensitive so no raw food! Oog oog!"

Male Half-Orc Sorcerer (inactive)

"Well, I guess that's an improvement. Sort of."

Foxglove Manor

"Well, i don't know much myself." says Zantus. "But many who traveled here for the festival said they saw or faced some sort of goblin activity along the Lost Coast, specially close to Nettlewood and Mosswood, to the east...This may be nothing, or just a coincidence, but the Swallowtail Festival is our attempt to leave behind the tragic events of the past and start anew, the Sheriff is haunted by that past more than most, so if the Festival's peace were to be disprupted i'm sure he'd be devastated."

---

"The Sheriff put everyone who knows the pointy side of an arrow on duty for today, so i guess i shouldn't expect much." says Savah, shrugging. "So, are you three in or not?"

Female Human Ranger (Sword-Devil) 1 | AC 13, touch 13, flatfooted 10, CMD 15 | hp 12/12 | Fort +3, Ref +5, Will -1

Sable flashes a confident grin, answering without a moment's hesitation. "In."

Honestly, she'd like to see what Viridi and Kalais can do, too, but they can speak for themselves.

Spells: 1/3 1st|Female Half-Elf (Varisian) Oracle of Life 1|HP: 9/9|AC: 16/11/15|Saves: +1 Fort, +1 Ref, +2 Will (+2 vs. Enchantment; +1 vs. Death/to Stabilize)|Init: +1|Perc: +6|Channels: 5/5

Viridi nods. "I'd like a crossbow, please."

Kalais rolls a shoulder, eyeing up the targets from afar. After a moment of consideration, the archer plucks out a handful of arrows from her gear and takes up a mark at the line, heels together as she readies a shot, the string pulling taut against the chestguard to her left.

A moment passes as she inhales, heels together, holding the air with an unnatural stillness until, with a practised flick, the bow goes limp and its arrow flies free.

Bullseye Shot: 1d20 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 4 = 13 (+ 1 if Point-Blank Shot Applies)

Seeing how far the shot lands from the centre, Kalais just sort of...snorts, laughing it off as she nocks a second arrow. It hadn't been that long since she'd fielded a range, right? Can't be...

Bullseye Shot: 1d20 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 + 4 = 23 (+ 1 if Point-Blank Shot Applies)

Even as the second arrow lands, the archer still doesn't seem all that impressed. "Maybe we should put the kid up there," she suggests, adjusting her grip on the spare shot in her firing hand. "Add some motivation."

"No wonder he is so wary then. Thank you for the information Father Zantus", Ansgar says to Zantus.

To his companions, "So, would you two like to go look for some books on Thassilon or wait another day and enjoy the festivites?"

Male Half-Orc Sorcerer (inactive)

"Might as well enjoy the festivities for now."
"It sound like books are not available today anyway."

Viridi takes a crossbow from a nearby rack and a case of bolts to go with it. Once Kalais has gone, she takes her spot and kneels down, resting the stock of the crossbow against her shoulder.

Breathe in, breathe out. Line the sights up...

She loads a bolt in.

...inhale, exhale...

She fires it!

Shot *PBS*: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 2 + 1 = 21

The bolt flies from the crossbow and strikes the target square with a *THUNK!*

Male Half-Orc Sorcerer (inactive)

Garbund watches the archery contest with interest.

"I should learn how to do that sort of thing some day."

Foxglove Manor

"I'm sure we'll be safe thanks to the sheriff's hard work.", Zantus answers.

---

Some of the townsfolk stop to watch as Kalais lands her second arrow at the center of the small red dot in the target, Viridi follows with another impressive performance, missing the center of the dot by maybie half an inch.

"Wow, Viridi, where'd you learn to shoot this well?", Savah asks, surprised.

A few minutes pass as a few new entrants arrive and the old ones keep practicing, when Savah finally announces the applications are closed and the competition proper is about to start. She takes a moment to replace the targets and explain the rules, as the competitors line up.

For simplicity sake we'll make two attack rolls each and the sum of both is your final score for the competition. The first roll is a close target (point-blank shot applies) and the second is far away (no pbs, still within the first range increment so no penalties). Garbund, Ansgar and Squeeze can join as well if they want to.

Male Goblin UBarbarian (Feral Gnasher) 5 / URogue 3 | HP 76/76 | AC 23 TO 19 FF 16 | F +9 R +13 W +7 | CMD 23 | Init +7 | Perc +14 DV

Squeeze wants to try! - says the Goblin, not quite understanding he had to shoot at the targets.

What does Squeeze have to do? - he finally whispered to Garbund. He was ashamed he had no clue what was going on, but wanted to show he could have "human fun" too.

Do they have small shortbows and arrows available for green critters to shoot?

Foxglove Manor

Probably not meant for green critters, but yes, small weapons are available

Spells: 1/3 1st|Female Half-Elf (Varisian) Oracle of Life 1|HP: 9/9|AC: 16/11/15|Saves: +1 Fort, +1 Ref, +2 Will (+2 vs. Enchantment; +1 vs. Death/to Stabilize)|Init: +1|Perc: +6|Channels: 5/5

Viridi nervously giggles. "Call it beginner's luck, Savah."

She lines up her first shot at close range...

PBS: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 1 = 4

...and somehow manages to shoot it into the dirt. She blanches and clears her throat before moving back for her long-range shot.

Shot: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Her long-range shot is considerably better!

Male Goblin UBarbarian (Feral Gnasher) 5 / URogue 3 | HP 76/76 | AC 23 TO 19 FF 16 | F +9 R +13 W +7 | CMD 23 | Init +7 | Perc +14 DV

Someone ends up lending a small shortbow to Squeeze. The goblin smiles and circles around it. He holds it backwards, first, but then manages to look at the other competitors and fixing it. He circles the weapon around, going in circles - and probably scaring the entire crowd to the bottom of their souls - until he finally lets go of the cord.

First shot: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

He smiles as if the attempt was completely intentional. The silence of skipping heartbeats is the background soundtrack for his second shot at the long-range target.

Second shot: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

Male Half-Orc Sorcerer (inactive)

"Well, it looks as if Squeeze knows his way around a bow!"

« Ne vrti okoli tako, da Stisnete. »
« Samo obraz cilj, ali pa se bo prestrašil dolge noge. »

language:
"Don't spin around like that, squeeze."
"Just face the target, or you will scare the long legs."

Male Human HP 28/32 | AC 20, T 12, FF 17 | Fort +3, Ref +4, Will +4 | Init +2 | Perception +1 Destructive Smite (3/4) Channel (2/3, 2d6)

Watching the others, Ansgar smiles a bit a Squeeze using a bow.

"Where did you learn to shoot like that, Squeeze? I should get you to teach me ha."

Ansgar will turn down offers to actually try using the bow though.

Foxglove Manor

There is some initial resistance to the idea of Squeeze joining the archery competition, but some of the townsfolk already had a few drinks, and there are number of armed adventurers close by, what can a single goblin do, anyway? It doesn't take long untill someone gives him a shortbow and he hits the mark twice, drawing some cheers from the small crowd.

"If even the gob can do it this shouldn't be very hard!", says someone. "Maybie i should've applied as well!"

A group of teenagers take their shots, they clearly don't know their way around a bow, but seem to having a lot of fun anyway.

Spoiler:

Teenager 1, Close Shot: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (18) - 4 = 14
Teenager 1, Far Shot: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (2) - 4 = -2
Teenager 2, Close Shot: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (18) - 4 = 14
Teenager 2, Far Shot: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (4) - 4 = 0
Teenager 3, Close Shot: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (19) - 4 = 15
Teenager 3, Far Shot: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (6) - 4 = 2
Teenager 4, Close Shot: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (2) - 4 = -2
Teenager 4, Far Shot: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (15) - 4 = 11

A few lucky shots actually hit the target, but most are completely off, the teenagers laugh it off as a group of older townsfolk take their shots with crossbows, they've probably received some training with crossbows before but are not very skilled.

Spoiler:

Townsfolk 1, Close Shot: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Townsfolk 1, Far Shot: 1d20 ⇒ 12
Townsfolk 2, Close Shot: 1d20 ⇒ 20
Townsfolk 2, Far Shot: 1d20 ⇒ 20
Townsfolk 3, Close Shot: 1d20 ⇒ 5
Townsfolk 3, Far Shot: 1d20 ⇒ 1

One of them hits the bullseye twice in a row, to everyone's surprise including herself. "No way i'd lose to a gob!", she jokes. The crowd cheers once again. "Sandpoint is winning!"

Two other step in to take their shots, adventurers from outside, judging by their appearance and confidence.

Spoiler:
Adventurer 1, Close Shot: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Adventurer 1, Far Shot: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Adventurer 2, Close Shot: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Adventurer 2, Far Shot: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

One of them has some decent shots, the other mimmicks the bad performances from the teenagers, and seems quite angry about it, making excuses about the bows being bad and the targets being unrealistic. Only Sable and Kalais haven't shot yet; the current leader is one of the townsfolk, with 40 points, slightly ahead of Squeeze, who got 38!

Male Half-Orc Sorcerer (inactive)

Garbund tries to find anyone willing to have a flutter (make a bet) on the archery:
diplomacy: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
"Ten gold for the goblin to win!"
An opportunity to make some quick coin.
He's not going to bet all his money (24 gp), though.
His WIS score isn't THAT low!

Male Goblin UBarbarian (Feral Gnasher) 5 / URogue 3 | HP 76/76 | AC 23 TO 19 FF 16 | F +9 R +13 W +7 | CMD 23 | Init +7 | Perc +14 DV

At this point, Squeeze was sitting down by a corner, near the other competitors, chewing on the feathers of the back of a broken arrow he found. He seemed genuinely happy, and was humming peacefully without much of a clue of his surroundings.

Female Human Ranger (Sword-Devil) 1 | AC 13, touch 13, flatfooted 10, CMD 15 | hp 12/12 | Fort +3, Ref +5, Will -1

Sable gives a low whistle when she sees Kalais' technique. "I guess they don't call you Black Arrows for nothing."

After Viridi's first shot with her crossbow, Sable gives the girl a playful, encouraging swat on the backside. "Nice shot."

"And you're just full of surprises, aren't you Squee?"

She lines up her own shots, but honestly, she seems to be enjoying herself just watching – she'll give it her best shot, but she won't be shedding any tears if she doesn't win.

Close Shot: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Far Shot: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

She winces a little, but shrugs a little sheepishly and smiles anyway. She's seen better days, but honestly, it's all in good fun – it's not like lives are on the line.

Hmmm...? - Squeeze heard when the Ranger talked to him, but was quite distracted to really say something back. The Goblin wasn't really understanding much of the "Human fun" thing, but yet he was find comfort in the fact that, during the festival, at least he wasn't being hunted. Maybe he could stick with these guys for long, and - who knows - maybe even survive a couple more years!

Bullseye Shot: 1d20 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 4 = 13

Figures.

Sadly, to say Kalais shots are somewhat wide would be an understatement--and whether her aim, though terribly consistent, is off due to the distraction of a crossbow toting goblin or something less obvious is anyone's guess.

Regardless, the Black Arrow shrugs it off without much complaint, mumbling something about preferring live targets as she moves to retrieve her ale.

"I'd keep your money if I were you," she adds to Garbund, supping alcohol as she points to the viciously talented local with the perfect bullseyes. "O' course if he does win then we might have a goblin-shaped target in a few minutes."

Foxglove Manor

You don't fool me, i know you're spending your bad rolls and saving the crits for real combat :p

Savah takes a moment to write down the final scores before reading them out-loud. The top 5 is comprised by, from first to last, one of the townsfolk, Squeeze, another townsfolk, one of the adventurers, and Kalais. Sable and Viridi are both just below, with a healthy lead of 6 points above the next competitor, one of the teenagers, who performed remarkably well for a first-timer.

Not sure if i should take Garbund's gold since Squeeze was already in second place when he called his bet :x

"The sheriff might want to take this one under his wing, if he hears about it.", she comments.

"Alright! Who said Sandpoint doesn't have good marksmen!?", the winner shouts as the crowd cheers once again.

At this point, the sun is high on the sky, and it shouldn't take long before lunch is served, the townsfolk start gathering at the cathedral square once again.

And anyway, Garbund is not the wisest one around!

Shouldering her bow again (with a thought to perhaps restring the thing once the noise of the festival dies down), Kalais pulls up her pack with one hand and gives Viridi's back the slightest frown as she scurries off like a snake through the brush.

"So long as it's edible," she grumbles, and promptly follows suit.

"Good food is always … um, good!"

With that, Garbund follows the others to the Rusty Dragon.

Foxglove Manor

As the group reaches the square, Father Zantus is finishing a short speech.

"...And so, as a reward for her aid, Desna blessed the child by allowing it to live on...As an immortal butterfly!", two acolytes pull the cover off of a wagon as he says that, a storm of swallowtail butterflies of many colors swarm into the air, painting the skies. The crowd gives a great cheer, and kids immediately start chasing the butterflies.

"And now we eat!", announces Mayor Deverin, to a second a cheer, as every tavern starts bringing foward its dishes.

Kalais finds the food to be much more than edible, every dish available is delicious. Risa's Place brings its famed spice potatoes to the festival, the Fatman's Feedbag brings roasted boar, the Hagfish has prepared lobster chowder, the White Deer offers peppercorn venison, and the Two Knights Brewery opens very special barrels of drink saved for special occasions; yet the talk of town seems to be the Rusty Dragon's curry-spiced salmon and early winterdrop mead, there is even some fight for it as two drunken locals want the same portion.

The food keeps coming and shows no sign of running out even though most people are already full. Some games and contests are starting again, but for now movement seems slower.

She casts an eye over at Garbund. "Well, with the new Cathedral being made of stone and glass, at least they won't have to worry about you burning it down if you miss."

Contrary to a normal human's appetite, Kalais seems to have made something of an event of staggering as much food as possible onto her plate, and despite her rough and gruff appearance seems to eat with all the poise of a well-educated scion...and the speed of a ravenous wolf.

Any odd looks that turn in her direction are either met with dead stares as she shovels another potato between her teeth, or a quick, "What? I've been living on rations for the last couple weeks. Give a girl a break."

Still, she seems to be washing it all down just fine, having moved on from straight ale back to water in the knowledge that there's at least one goblin roaming around town, and the ranger chews around a mouthful of venison as she shakes her head at Garbund's notion of setting the newly christened cathedral ablaze.

"What's the deal with that, anyway?" she says, stabbing at her plate. "I keep hearing that word. Unpleasantness."

Viridi pauses and looks down at her meal. "Um..."

She sounds distinctly uncomfortable now. "...Unpleasantness refers to a very bad time for Sandpoint. There was a rash of... well, incidents... that eventually culminated in the old Cathedral being burned to the ground."

"And..." She starts, but stops and goes back to her meal. She closes her eyes and sighs.

"Ah." Kalais pushes at a potato, realising that perhaps this isn't the best topic for festive dinner talk. Not that it's going to stop her.

"Well, Inheritor's light to you. Seems like the place's bounced back just fine." Noticing Viridi's rather dower expression, the archer frowns. "Means something more to you does it, Miss?"

"...yes." Viridi mumbles. "That, and there was the whole Chopper killing spree before that..."

Male Half-Orc Sorcerer (inactive)

"Chopper killing spree?"

Obviously not a local.

Viridi winces. "...a local woodcarver went insane for some reason and started stalking the streets of Sandpoint at night, killing people by cutting their throats and gouging out their eyes. He claimed many victims before the watch finally found him--he committed suicide in his own home, surrounded by his grisly trophies."

She rubs her throat in obvious discomfort.
