Kargas Stormscar |
Kargas offers what he hopes is a reassuring smile. "Thank you, Ameiko. And...if there's anything you need just say the word, we'll walk through fire to help."
I have darkvision and I assume I'll be at the front. I don't have great Perception and I'll probably just be hanging around doors waiting for the all-clear so I can barge through.
Rig Veda |
"We're... sorry about your brother. Family can be quite complicated." Rig tries to give Ameiko a reassuring smile. He echoes Kargas' sentiment. "If you need anything, you have but to ask."
Rig also has darkvision, but also doesn't have the best perception. He also has dancing lights which makes for a mobile light source. It may be wise to have Colvyn out front to watch for traps. I'm flexible with marching order. I'm a more useful melee combatant, like Kargas and Cade, but I've got support options as well.
Laurana Kanan |
Laurana matches Flo's hug but maintains silence, figuring the others had said enough.
As they march through the tunnels, she marvels that there was a secret entrance into Sandpoint the whole time. "Honestly, I am surprised that no one has used this before to attack the town." She notes.
She will cast light on her bow.
Cade Goodbarrel |
Cade smiles at Ameiko as she produces the box. When the items are brought forth he laughs a bit.
..and here I thought you were breaking out the thirty year old bottle of scotch you had tucked away for a special occasion....Imagine my surprise that not only do you have a well stocked bar but you were an adventure as well.
He picks through the items and returns them to the box.
Are you sure you want to part with a part of your past? Do not get me wrong all these can come in handy and we are grateful for them but this is part of who you are...or were. It is nice to have things to look at and remember those times.
Cade makes his way to his room and returns wearing a crisp new white shirt with a charcoal grey doublet and black pants. He wears a black satin traveling coat with gold trim. Hanging off his shoulder is the chain shirt from the goblins.
When they get to the tunnels, Cade watches as the others go about getting ready. He pulls forth an oil rag and cleans his weapons. He takes his time removing his traveling coat and doublet. Unfolding the chain shirt, he is amazed at the work that was put into cleaning up the armor. It looks brand new and the leather straps have all been replaced. The metal links had a ever so slight sheen of oil to them.
That man knows how to take care of armor....that much is plain to see
Cade put the armor on, shaking his shoulders around to get the armor to sit better across his body and when he feels comfortable, he straps himself in. He then puts his doublet back on over the armor and finally the traveling coats as well. Adjusting his belt, Cade retrieves a piece of cloth from his pouch, placing it to his lips and closes his eyes..Guide my hand
When he opens his eyes he looks up at his companions that he has come to fight beside. The stare back at him.
At least if I die, I will die looking good.
die well dressed
When asked about light...
I thank you for the offer and would be thankful for any such assistance. I am thinking that Bellum will be better off helping to hold this position. I am not sure what terrain we will be facing in the tunnels and he just might become more of a liability than an advantage.
Laurana Kanan |
I forgot to note that Laurana will be using the MM iuon stone.I will note it in my next post.
Rune GM |
Colvyn sneaks forwards to scout out the tunnel.
Colvyn Perception Take 10: 10 + 9 = 19
Colvyn Trapfinding Take 10: 10 + 12 = 22
Colvyn Stealth Take 10: 10 + 11 = 21
The tunnel travels approximately northeast, but as it starts to curve to the north there are two side passages on the eastern side. From the mouth of the first Colvyn hears some quiet guttral speech in a language he does not understand.
He comes to the corner, and looking around he sees a pair of very strange creatures. They are facing one another and speaking. They are roughly humanoid in shape, and have pale skin, but their hands and feet end in wicked-looking claws, and their legs have an extra joint, like a dog. They are hunched over, and the most hideous thing about them is that their jaws seem to open out at the bottom as well as the front, and they have long tongues like a serpent.
They are dressed in rags. Though it looks like their claws and teeth will do a lot of damage, they are also armed with ranseurs.
the creatures do not seem to have spotted Colvyn.
Guys: The Slideshow has been updated. A picture of the charming creature is on the left. Only Colvyn is actually on the map at this point.

What are those guys... Colvyn studies the creatures for a second, making sure he can give a good description to the rest of the group. Almost tempted to go see what is further up, but Flo might get upset again. He slowly crawl back toward the rest of the group to report what he found. When he gets into sight of the group, he signal them to stop moving and stay quiet. Getting closer he whispers. "There is a room on the right, two creatures inside, armed with ranseurs. They don't look friendly."
Kargas Stormscar |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
"Good, I'm not feeling particularly friendly either," Kargas growls, testing the edge of his new falchion. "Was there anyone further down the hall? Two guards shouldn't take long, but I'd rather not give up surprise if there are more."
Floredana Mandulescu |
"It was wise of you to come back, you might have been surrounded if kept going and we are strongest when we work together. We can't all sneak past them, should we plan on taking them out? If so, we should try to get as close as possible before striking," she suggests. I wonder what creatures Colvyn saw... Never a good sign if the woodsman doesn't know what it is.
Cade Goodbarrel |
Listening to the report.
Well that is just dandy.
He listens to Kargas as he makes his suggestion.
I agree we go in quietly.
He looks at Colvyn
Was there any device that could be used to sound an alarm....a gong...pull string?
He continues to listen and then..
We go in and strike fast and true. Combine our efforts on one and then the other.
He looks back up at Kargas and with a sincere voice and a smile of course.
Do you think you can do this quietly?
Rune GM |
Colvyn did not see any gongs, pull strings, etc. If there is such a thing it must be hidden.
So the approach by stealth plan... is that the plan? Who is going?
Floredana Mandulescu |
How does this sound: Laurana and I will be 20ft behind Kargas, Cade, Rig, and Colvyn. We all try to stealth as close as we can until they are ~30ft away and then go for a surprise round. I'm open to other ideas too!
Laurana Kanan |
That sounds good. Laurana does not want to go toe to toe with those things.
Kargas Stormscar |
Kargas gives Cade a wolfish grin. "They'll be dead before they know it," the half-orc boasts, and then slips off down the tunnel. For once, he actually seems to be moving quietly.
Stealth: 1d20 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 1 - 2 = 17
Rune GM |
That sound fine to me...what about taking 10 or even 20 on stealth.
You can't take 20 on an opposed stealth check because that means sneaking up on an enemy twenty times until you really fool them. It assumes you have already rolled a 1 before you get a 20. But taking 10 is fine.
Is that the plan? Everyone takes 10? Taking 10, Rig gets a 13.
Also, Cade: as your light source approaches, the creatures may see the light coming as the hallway outside brightens regardless of your stealth check.
Rig Veda |
Rig should take 10, it's probably his best bet. Kargas and I have darkvision. Perhaps we should go first?
Rune GM |
The group does its best to sneak quietly towards the chamber, but when they come around the corner, the two creatures stand read with ranseurs raised.
One of the creatures speaks to the other in a guttural tongue.
"Chì ghjè sta? Puderaghju guilà a furia nantu à questu!"
The creatures raise their polearms and attack! The lead one steps forwards and thrusts his ranseur at Kargas, but even caught off guard Kargas still dodges the blow.

Flo pulls her key-shaped wand and raises it above her head. To her disappointment, the butterflies that flutter forth and alight upon her allies' equipment aren't the usual elegant, graceful creatures, but mechanical, clockwork beasts. Clearly cross, she draws her starknife as she moves up in the formation. "Let's end this quickly," she says grumpily. What was I thinking, accepting a wand from another faith! Desna still grants me her favor, but it is has been twisted by that Abadarian...

Laurana didnt want to crowd and she definitely did not want to be on the front lines. She wound her way so she could get a better view of the battlefield but still wasn't in a position to see the enemies.
Just moving this turn. Dont want to get in the way of the fighters. She has 10 movement left and if Rig moves up, she will occupy that space.
Rune GM |
Colvyn's arrow strikes the bizarre creature and dark blood wells up. The creature merely grunts. Floredana casts a spell and everyone feels heartened. Laurana shifts her position.
The remaining creature thrusts at Cade with his Ranseur.

Using Dodging Panache would provoke an attack from blue, but would also allow you to close to within 5 feet of either of them. You would still have the AC bonus from Full Defense. Bit of Luck for Kargas, he rolls all d20's twice and takes the higher. Going to stay out of the way for one more turn before potentially joining in myself, don't want to block anyone out of the fight for a whole 1d4+1 damage!

Cade: Drawing weapons can't be combined with a 5' step. It is always part of a move action unless you have the quick draw feat. However, I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't have your weapons out already, so I'll allow it this time.
Also don't forget that you have a +1 to damage rolls from Rig's performance.
Cade engages the other creature and slashes it with a combination move.
Laurana shoots a bolt of energy from her ioun stone, but feels a resistance blocking her spell. But the energy manages to get through, and strikes the creature.

Cade knew that what he did was the right call and now he needed to take advantage of that choice. The last creature dropped his reach weapon in order to attack the halfling. A smile comes across his face as he prepares to defend himself.
Now everyone can join the party.
Opportune Parry and Riposte: 1d20 + 9 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 9 + 2 - 2 = 20
Cade use his basket hilt on his rapier to push aside a claw attack and does the same thing with his Main Gauche against the second attack. He takes an extra step out to his left and is not able to bring his rapier back in line to block the last attack. The teeth sink into his arm below the armor, ripping his shirt. He lets out remark in pain.
What is it with everyone these days. Why must they go for the shirt...every damn time I get a new shirt someone has to ruin it. Motherf...Sorry..

Rune GM |
Well, damn.
Rig moves in and cuts down the creature facing Cade, while Kargas runs the other completely through.
Combat over.
The red one is at negative HP and bleeding out; the Blue one is completely dead.
Laurana recognizes the design of the two Ranseurs. They are similar to the one Brodert Quink has, only in much better condition. Either they are genuine weapons from the Thassilonian era or are made to look like them.
As a result, if you point this out when selling them you can get full price instead of half price for them.
The party searches the small chamber but finds little else of interest.
Guys, I assume you press on up the tunnel but give me a little while to get a map together.
Rune GM |
The group advances a short way to the fork in the cavern.
To the east the passage narrows, but it seems to enter a regular-shaped chamber of some sort, and barely visible in the north wall is an aged door. There seems to be a fair bit of debris in the room, though it is hard to say exactly what from where you are.
To the north the passage has another branch going east and the main north passage gently curves out of sight.
Which Way?
Guys, I'm going to have a main Dungeon map and then we will zoom in to a close-up map for combats. The main dungeon map is up now.
Laurana Kanan |
Laurana takes a moment to look at the swords, she could hardly believe her luck! Speaking quickly, "Do you know what these are!?" She says to no one in particular, and then she answers her own question, "These are Thassilonian era, or at least made to look like it. Master Quink will love them. Or, I suppose we could sell them for a good deal."
Floredana Mandulescu |
"Great teamwork! Let's press forward before anything notices they are gone..." Nice and quick, a good sign! Flo pulls out her wand, draws a strand of positive energy from it and releases it over the injured halfling. Frowning as his wounds don't close fully, she repeats the process until they do.
"Let's pick those things up then, I'm sure he would love to look at them! It looks like we are at a crossroads... I say we head to the right. I wouldn't want any of those things to sneak up on us!" she points out, starknife still in hand.

Heading to the room on the right and if empty, inspecting the door.
Kargas Stormscar |
I'll advance up to the edge of that room, ready to back Colvyn up if there's trouble. Will follow him in once we get an all-clear.
Cade Goodbarrel |
Cade smiles up at Flo as she heal his wounds.
I thank you kindly lady Mandulescu, Your words are music to my ears. Tis but a scratch....better safe than sorry...thank you again.
He walks over to the creature that ruined his shirt and stabs it through the eye.
That is for my shirt you prick...
He then passes by Rig.
Thank you for the aid. We work well together...now if I can just find a way to clean and mend my shirt after every combat, that would be great.
He chuckles as he waits for the all clear to move forward.
Rig Veda |
Rig casts prestidigitation to clean Cade's shirt. "We'll work on the holes later," he chuckles, patting the halfling on the back.
Rune GM |
Colvyn moves carefully ahead, entering the small room.
The original purpose of this chamber is unclear, but large mounds of rubble lie strewn on its floor.
The wall to the west has been torn down to reveal a tunnel leading to the west (the one you just came from).
An investigation of the rubble reveals that most of it seems to have consisted of broken urns and other pottery containers that once held food stores, long since crumbled to dust.
A search of the room reveals nothing of interest, and the door does not seem to be trapped. Colvyn takes a quiet peek through the door, and beyond he sees a short and narrow passage that splits into a "T" after 10 feet, with one passage going east and the other west.
What now?
Floredana Mandulescu |
Press forward into that structure or down the tunnel... "How about we go through the rest of this tunnel first and then see where that room leads?" she asks the group. Doesn't seem like it makes a huge difference either way, we'll have to do both eventually!
Kargas Stormscar |
"I'd rather deal with the side-passage now," Kargas offers. "If there's danger here, I'd rather not have it wander out into the main tunnel and come at us from behind."
