Also, for scroll scribing from town NPCs, you'll need to pay for casting services, then pay for cost of scroll, then pay for scribe into spellbook cost. If the NPC in question happens to be Freya, you're going to buy her sweets/give her a big stuffed toy of the value of the casting services.
Will tell you there be no wizards in town, though we have an alchemist...

I went to Disney in japan, in winter. The queues were still superlong(esp to take photos with mickey and minnie). But at least it wasn't hot. The park opens pretty early, so you really want to get up even earlier.
Crummock-i-Phail |
Disneyland!
Oh, you mean in game...
Heh. There might be the opportunity to do that - from what I have heard, we actually go to 20th Century Earth at some point in this AP ;-)
Cadence Anakevo |
If we're going to Earth, Cadence insists on seeing a broadway show.
EDIT: Einar, this should be hilarious considering who Cadence worships... She is much more casual about such things. But seriously, all I need for now is the first part of the 16. The rest of it we'll discover in game. I haven't looked at your background spoilers. Those are your secrets to reveal with time.
Cadence Anakevo |
Tempo, Opus and Acapella have more personality as names to me. I can see Tempo being a bit of a speedster, Opus being hard-working, and Acapella being a barker.
Robert Henry |
Lol. I think all huskies are speedsters.
oh yeah, but some are faster than others ;)
we had a six year old female named Jade, who was very well trained, Then when my dad died we kept one of his dogs, a six month old pup named Fawn. So for a while we would walk Fawn on a leash outside in the yard showing her the boundaries. Eventually I figured I could use the mature Jade to train the younger Fawn, and let them both out in the yard. Yeah, that didn't work well, they were prancing through the front yard, and Fawn tried to pass Jade, and she wouldn't let her. Instead of staying in the yard, like Jade knew she was supposed to do, she shot up the road with Fawn right after her, they went up the road almost a mile turned up a block turned again and was heading back toward the house when a neighbor who saw my daughter looking for them on a bike caught them and held them until we got there.
Needless to say we didn't do that again ;)
Einar 'Kinslayer' Bjornson |
so I have a technical question: the tiefling Other Race trait says: Fiendish Sorcery: Tiefling sorcerers with the Abyssal or Infernal bloodlines treat their Charisma score as 2 points higher for all sorcerer class abilities.
So I gave Einar a charisma of 12 assuming that because of this trait, that he will be able to cast fourth level spells because it would "treat his charisma score as 2 points higher:" ie. 14. Was this a safe assumption or will I need to raise his actual charisma to 13 then 14 before he gets to level 10 and 13?
GM Mort |
No it was not a safe assumption. You still need the cha. But probably by 10 you will be able to get yourself a headband of alluring charisma, so don't bother too much about it.
Crummock-i-Phail |
@Einar: You should be fine - the parent classes for Bloodrager were Sorceror and Barbarian, and I vaguely remember a developer clarification to the effect of, if something held true for the sorceror bloodline, it also held true for the equivalent bloodrager one.
GM Mort |
Crummock, can you link me the post on sorcerers? If it is true, I honestly did not know, and thought it was only for spell DCs.
Einar 'Kinslayer' Bjornson |
It seems to me two separate questions, the first is does it apply in that way for sorcerers. It says Sorcerer class abilities, I didn't know if casting spells was a class ability or some other clarification,
The second question: if anything applying to sorcerers apply to bloodragers.
It seems like Crummocks answer covered the second question but Morts answer covered the first question.
Crummock-i-Phail |
Crummock, can you link me the post on sorcerers? If it is true, I honestly did not know, and thought it was only for spell DCs.
Well, it is definitely for more than spell DCs - the write-up for tieflings actually says Tiefling sorcerers with the Abyssal or Infernal bloodlines treat their Charisma score as 2 points higher for all sorcerer class abilities.
Spells and bloodline powers are both class abilities.
Mr. Whiskers |
Spellcasting is a class ability, so I would allow them to gain bonus spells and cast spells as if it were higher.
I do not think this extends to Bloodrager though. A Bloodrager can't use abilities and items listed as sorcerer only. On the other hand, this isn't PFS and I don't think it would break the game if Mort allowed it. It certainly fits the theme of that ability.
Einar 'Kinslayer' Bjornson |
If we're going to Earth, Cadence insists on seeing a broadway show.

I'm ok if you read the backstory, obviously you keep player knowledge and character knowledge separate, some of the stuff isn't fleshed out yet, you know the gory details, it was done in broad brush strokes. The one thing that Cadence would know, since she speak/reads Skald, Einar has a brand on his neck in Skald rune's that means "Kinslayer."
I believe everyone in the party knows Skald, so there it is...
Cadence Anakevo |
Have I seen the brand yet? It is unseasonably cold this summer. I thought you might have a scarf on it for dramatic purposes.
I still have to write up a backstory for Cadence, but hers is simple. Grown up in Heldren with this large family, received a scholarship to the Kith, and is now traveling after graduation. No dark shadows in her story, yet, which is unusual for one of my characters. I know she's fierce and strong-willed with a desire to wander and explore.
She'll be curious as hell when she sees that brand.
Mr. Whiskers |
Did some more checking. I can't find anything official, but I did play around with HeroLabs a bit. I created higher level versions of Einar as both Bloodrager and Sorcerer. The program did not treat the Charisma as higher for Bloodrager when attempting to learn more spells, but it did for Sorcerer. If I changed the level up boosts to Charisma, it would indicate third and fourth level spells.
HeroLabs is not an official source, but they do make every effort to follow the rules.
We could try asking the questions in the rules section of the boards.
Einar 'Kinslayer' Bjornson |
@ Cadence, the scar is high up, it was put there so it could be seen, so all would know. Einar does nothing to cover it.
@ Mr. Whiskers, thank you for looking, I should have asked before I finished him, It sounds like I will need to burn a couple of stat increases on it or get a magical item, or just not use third and fourth level spells. I mean who needs them anyway? He can pick up a stick to hit stuff, what does he need spells for?
yeah, I'm just trying to poke the wizard-loving GM ;)
going to bed soon, I will be back on in seven hours. Go ahead and RP the meeting with the Mayor, Einar will nod his head in agreement, If we can find him a longbow, he would use it at range.
GM Mort |
Ahh bother it. Just say it works for abyssal bloodragers, you're treated as 14 cha.
GM Mort |
I made some edits in my last gameplay post. Feel free to read it over.
Also, its about 9 am in the morning, after you pick up your armor it'll be about time for lunch/picking Freya up.
Mr. Whiskers |
For HMM's benefit, going through the armors:
Light armors would not slow you.
padded armor: Skip this. The armor you have is better.
leather: The armor you have is this type
studded leather (25gp / 175 gp): +1 AC over current armor. If you can get a masterwork set, no ACP. Otherwise an ACP of -1.
chain shirt (100gp / 250gp): +2 AC over current armor. -2 ACP (-1 if masterwork)
Medium armors would slow you to 20' movement -- the same movement rate as Mr. Whiskers.
armored coat (50gp / 200gp): +2 AC over current armor, -2 ACP, very fast to put on.
scale mail (50gp / 200gp): +3 AC over current armor, -4 ACP
chain mail (150gp / 300gp): +4 AC over current armor, -5 ACP
breastplate (200gp / 350gp): +4 AC over current armor, -4 ACP
MW Studded Leather (if available) would give the best AC at no armor check penalty. Scale Mail is affordable -- I don't think anyone uses it past 2nd level.
Mr. Whiskers |
So, while looking around for something else I stubbled across this FAQ. It looks like if I used Ray of Frost, I would get a bonus to hit and damage from Flagbearer.
The Acid Splash cantrip isn't a ray. We have been giving it the bonus to hit but not damage.
Going to the next step of Alchemical Power Components, as Mort suggested a common flask of Acid can be used as a Focus for Acid Splash for +1 damage. You can also use a flask of Liquid Ice with Ray of Frost for +1 damage.
Given that Cadence has Flag Bearer, is there an advantage in most cases for Ray of Frost over Acid Splash?
Cadence Anakevo |
In this campaign I'm betting that many monsters will have cold resistance or sr. However, you're an arcanist. You can likely prep both or start with one and change out.
Hmm
Mr. Whiskers |
True, I can prepare up to four cantrips and change out which ones each day.
I would still like to know how it works for Acid Spray vs. Ray of Frost since in general I prefer Acid over Cold damage. That plus as you said we will likely hit a lot of stuff with cold resistance.
GM Mort |
drinking binge Einar has 68 gp to contribute also the chainmail (150 gp is +6/+2, which would max your dex.
Getting chain mail or breast plate? Also, any ranged weapons?
Otherwise I can move you to Madame Theodora.
Cadence Anakevo |
Breast plate I think. I have a sling, but am hazy on how much cash we have. Can we afford a bow?
GM Mort |
Acid splash gets bonus to hit, not to damage, with regard to flagbearer. Because you can't take weapon focus acid splash as per this thread
Flagbearer says attack rolls so you still get the to hit. Look on the bright side, acid splash/ray of frost hits touch AC ao you're more likely to hit anyway.
Ray of frost/acid splash is up to you, but yeah, quite some stuff has cold resistance/immunity.
GM Mort |
I am not going to count GPs lol, but shortbows are 30 gp as opposed to longbows...
Mr. Whiskers |
Mr. Whiskers has 187 gp, 7 sp, 5 cp minus any fees for last night's lodging and this mornings breakfast. He offered "about 100gp" worth of it for getting others better equipped.
That still leaves himself enough for a crossbow and/or possibly something alchemical. Sling bullets are too heavy. :( He already mentioned how even the crossbow is too heavy, but at least it does a bit more damage for the weight. Given the above answer about rays, I will at very least be buying a flask of Liquid Ice for 40gp. The two pounds is most likely worth the +1 damage.
Sling works pretty well for entry level strength build because you always add Strength to damage. The reload time is a pain, but you only get one attack per round anyways. Later the bow becomes much better both because of iterative attacks and the ability to draw ammo as a free action.
We can figure out the details once you get back from Black Belt training tonight, but feel free to bot up to 100 gp out of Mr. Whiskers' pockets. If the group wants slightly more, either return to the shop later that day or wait until I can reply.
GM Mort |
100 gp + Einar's 68gp = sufficient for chainmail but not breastplate. Unless people want to chip in more?
I left the post open so feel free to select either.
GM Mort |
We'll just say then Shiela arranged for free food and board for everyone from the caravan, which is all of you, for as long as the caravan stays in Heldren.
Mr. Whiskers |
Off to tonight's game. Will work on the harrow question once I get back tonight!
GM Mort |
I might be caught in a couple of meetings today, but I'll let you know how it goes, if I can.
Robert Henry |
hey Mort, I just about posted for this game Then I saw that GM Chyro wanted a 7th level arcane caster of all things. It looks like a homebrew in the Darklands. Didn't know if you would be interested, GM Chyro is a GM I'm in a 'first year' PFS game with, seems to be very amicable.
GM Mort |
I need to absorb the group composition and feel, character creation rules before I can think of what type of arcane caster. Then take into consideration setting, how many fights per day..
*starts Shaking the blocks*
Cadence Anakevo |
Tell Chyro I recommended you. He tried to recruit me for his game but I turned him down because I'd just been recruited for yours, and the speed of this one has been overwhelming!
I honestly don't know how much money I have for breast plates and such.
I've lost track of group cash and stuff.
Hmm
GM Mort |
You do have enough cash if Mr Whiskers and Einar give all their gp up but Mr Whiskers would be left with 55 gp(after having contributed 134 gp which is more then the 100 gp). Without spending a single cent of your own.
Else you can get chainmail, which would leave Mr Whiskers and Einar 50 gp richer.(They can decide how they split). Also without spending a single cent on your own.
Also note that I doubt you fully utilized your character creation funds of 150 gp. Based on your sheet you only spent on a flag, guisarme and leather armor, and a silver light mace.
GM Mort |
You spent 54/150 gp at character creation, based on your characrer sheet. After deducting for mw your guisarme, you have 77.15 gp from Master of fallen fortress.
Therefore you have (96+77.15)= 173.75 gp to spend in all. Note I do not see any belt pouches, backpacks on your character sheet so I'm not sure how you're carrying everything.
