Tristalt Mythic Serialized Gameplay

This is NOT a regular PbP game.

This is the recruitment thread for One Hour To Ascension, a high-level serialized dungeon crawl/testing grounds/arena game of mortals attempting to ascend to deific status by passing a number of challenges. One Hour to Ascension is unique in that play will occur approximately one hour at a time, with solo, group, or even PvP events occurring a few times most weeks.

My preferred format for this is Fantasy Grounds Virtual Table Top. I have the Ultimate License so that all that is needed to play is the free demo download. For those who are unable to use Fantasy Grounds for whatever reason, I am also willing to run sessions on the Paizo Boards as Psuedo-Play-By-Posts.

How this will work: I will post the upcoming times I can run, and players will indicate which of those times, if any, are good for them. We will “meet” either on Paizo or in Fantasy Grounds and will play, with any Players having between 1 and 1 ½ hours to complete the Test. PCs who finish in the allowed time will advance, while those who die or otherwise fail will be restored to their status at the beginning of the game.

The first player to “claim” a time slot will be allowed to determine if anyone else who wants to play that same slot can join. If you do not allow someone to join with you who wants to play, they get “dibs” over you for the next time slot they want/can make. In multiplayer games, each PC that participates gets a bonus ½ Feat (these may be collected for Feats (A Mythic Feat counts as 1 ½ Feats for this purpose) or used for Traits(= ½ Feat).)

If you want to do a PvP game, when you are the first person who claims a time slot, you can announce that you’re willing to accept other PCs for PvP. The PvP arenas will be a race to a central location; there will be traps/obstacles/monsters in the way. The first PC to the central location will gain a boon usable in the PvP fight. The winner of the PvP match advances while the loser gets restored to their status at the beginning of the match. A PvP game counts as a multiplayer game as above. PvP winners will gain an additional bonus ½ Feat.

If you schedule a game and do not show without at least an hour’s notice, everyone else gets “dibs” on any slot they want over you until you have been bumped once.

Advancements

When a character earns an Advancement, they may choose one of the following:
A) Advance a tristalt level
B) Advance a mythic tier
C) Claim a Domain. Gain appropriate Domain abilities using your tristalt level as your effective cleric or druid level and substitute any mental stat as the governing stat. Gain the ability to use the Domain’s spells as spell-like-abilities once per day per spell level.
D) Enhance one Domain. Select a Domain you have claimed (see C). You may now use that Domain’s spells as supernatural abilities three times per day instead of spell-like and once per day. Additionally, you may grant the Domain to your followers as per the divine source universal path ability. You must have selected A,B, and C each at least once to select this option.

Character Creation Rules

Paizo Published Materials ONLY

Characters are Tristalt; this is like Gestalt, but with three parts instead of two combining to get your abilities. Level is 16, plus you get 1 Mythic Tier to start.

A Prestige Class must be earned completely on one side of the Tristalt and applied to that side.

Templates cost a number of levels equal to twice their CR adjustment, with the exception of the Advanced simple template, which costs 3 levels. Races with HD must apply their templates to the side of the Tristalt with those Racial Hit Dice. Take the higher of the creature’s CR+1 or racial HD to determine the cost of levels (on one side of the Tristalt) for “monstrous” races. Any Race with 12 or under race building points do not cost any extra levels.13-20 RP costs 1 level, 21-29 costs 2 levels, anything beyond that is probably a monstrous race, as above. Custom races are limited to 20 RP max.

30 point buy, limited 7-18 before racial adjustments.
2 Traits
Max Hit Points

Feats
One bonus Feat each level instead of every other level.
One bonus Mythic Feat per Mythic Tier.

Free Feats!:

Str 13+ gain the following free bonus Feats: distance thrower, improved unarmed strike, power attack
Str 15+ gain the following free bonus Feats: two-handed thrower, improved bull rush, improved overrun, improved sunder
Dex 13+ gain the following free bonus Feats: brisk spell, dodge, edge runner, nimble moves, spell denial
Dex 15+ gain the following free bonus Feats: combat reflexes, reach defense
Con 13+ gain the following free bonus Feats: drunkard’s recovery, endurance, ground grabber, scale and skin, spell denial
Con 15+ gain the following free bonus Feats: combat stamina, great fortitude, necromantic affinity, toughness
Int 13+ gain the following free bonus Feats: artful dodge, combat expertise, fox style, patient strike, secret signs
Int 15+ gain the following free bonus Feat: combat casting, steadfast mind
Wis 13+ gain the following free bonus Feats: alertness, careful speaker, blind-fight
Wis 15+ gain the following free bonus Feats: improved blind-fight, steadfast mind
Cha 13+ gain the following free bonus Feats: conviction, inspirational commander, spell denial, twinned feint
Cha 15+ gain the following free bonus Feats: flag bearer, steadfast mind, voice of the sybil

Unchained Rules/Houserules

Automatic Bonus Progression with No Magic Items (+2 levels); you have 5000gp to purchase equipment.
Background Skills
Stamina free for Fighters (and Con 15+ as above), Feat access for others
Skill Unlocks ninjas/rogues gain access to the unlocks at 3/5ths the listed ranks
Classes- preferred over core, but use whichever.

What is our Deadline?
This is open-ended. My goal is to provide at least one game session for anyone who completes a character, with hopefully many more than that. The minimal one-hour-at-a-time commitment should help assure that this is the case. Once someone has a character completed, I’ll start offering time slots.

I might drop something in over the next games. I assume this is a super-lethal death game? I'm torn between submitting something goofy or not. Could we possibly do two submissions?

I don't see why not, although you would have to let me know when you signed up for a game which character you would be playing.

I imagine it will have great potential for lethality given the powerful nature of the PCs and the need to challenge them adequately.

Death, however, will merely restore you to how you started the challenge you lost for the next time you play.

Progression through success, stagnation through failure.

Ok. Im looking at options. Can we purchase scrolls, potions, or wands? Can we craft anything.

No magic items whatsoever. If you can't do it yourself (or pay someone to do it for you) it can't be done!<---Edit: realized that statement may be confusing. Items cannot hold magical power on a permanent basis and require a being of power to invest in them to even hold temporary power (ABP, alchemical infusions... spellbooks are instruction manuals for how to... etc.; there are no magic items, not even "consumables" such as scrolls, wands, potions, etc.) If you are capable of crafting a non-magical item by taking 10 on a related craft skill you may pay the crafting cost for those items.

Alchemical items, special materials, etc. are ok.

Also, a note regarding buffing: Assume you are told "Sometime in the next hour, you will be summoned to the Test." Could be a fw minutes, could be a full hour. I may even roll a d60. :P

What does ABP with no magic items mean? I assume no weapon and armor attunement.

As always Reckless I'm interested in your games, but tristalt? Really?

Dot

I only have an hour left to finish?
Dang. Better get my dot up quick :)

Yes, this does indeed make me happy. :D I will make up a tri-stalt version of Kit Vulpik as soon as I can get around to it, since I was already thinking he'd go for the Test of the Starstone after completing Reign of Winter and liberating Irrisen.

Sometime after that, when I've rebuilt my creative energies after the spree of character creation I've been on recently, I'll make a tri-stalt version of Zakhin'Dakh, the intensely curious giant griffon, because there need to be more griffon deities. :D

If you want to remove magic items entirely (or make them so exceedingly rare that there is no expectation of finding them), consider giving the characters bonuses from the following table as if they were 2 levels higher. The table extends to 22nd level to account for games without magic items.

This option is what I was referring to. So, yes, you can attune items, but there are no "native" or un-attuned magic items. Basically the only magic is that you provide yourself through attunement.

This puts everyone on a more equal footing and levels out my expectations with already pretty complex characters.

It's all the rage in high level recruiting on the Paizo boards these days. XD

Yes, it's complex. I have reduced the complexity by sticking to Paizo Published only and eliminating magic items, but, yes... complex.

Ha! An hour to build a Tristalt character? Now that would be a challenge. But....NO!

That would be...something. Pretty sure I spent about 2 weeks on my tristalt for CaveToads's game...

Safe to assume when we get Necromantic Affinity at CON 15, we can ignore the part where 'Cure' spells damage us?

Work in Progress, but here's a start...

The Witness peered over the gathering crowd of Potentials. This millennia’s crop was an amusing lot. How would the cosmic balance shift if this lot became the new gods? Well, this and worse has happened before, ever was, and shall be again, he reminded himself.

Out of habit more than necessity, he cleared his throat. His voice boomed over those assembled and echoed through time, reaching out to those who had come before and all the way to the ends of time to those who would yet come. ”Behold, the Ziggurat of Infinity. Therein, you shall face the challenges which will determine your worthiness to Ascend. At this moment, you are a Potential, and nothing more. Succeed in the Tests of the Ziggurat, and you shall leave behind your mortal existence and become a God. Many will fail, and remain mere Potential. At the end of the Cycle, their Essences will become fuel for the Divine Spark.”

He smiled, smacking his lips, and muttered ”Tasty, tasty fuel….” with a sweeping gesture, the object in the distance became larger and closer as the ground shook beneath the feet of those gathered, soon eclipsing all else in the otherwise featureless plane.

"Who will be the first to face their destinies?" he asked, red cape fluttering in an unseen and unfelt breeze.

Regarding "fluff" to go with your "crunch": feel free to include anything that gives you a better grip on who your character is, where he comes from, and what his goals are.

Specifically, I would like to know what type of Portfolio your character might be seeking, and why.

I don't need encyclopedic volumes of backhistory, but feel free to write whatever you're inspired to.

A well-dressed kitsune springs to his feet. "I'm ready!" he declares grandly, his nine tails fanning out behind him.

I've almost got Kit ready, now. Somehow he came together quicker than I thought, probably because I could base him on his Reign of Winter version. I'm thinking that adventure will be part of his background, but I think I'm about written out for the day today.

For times, Thursday evening at 6:30 PM (Eastern US time) is the most convenient for me, if it works for you. I don't think I'll have Kit 100% ready by this Thursday, but next Thursday I might be prepared.

Oooooh, reading this recruitment gives me a much, much better idea of what you're going for here.
And I am absolutely interested in this.

Following my earlier idea, I believe I'll be going Half-dragon 4, Oracle 12/Bloodrager 16/Sorcerer 6, Dragon Disciple 10. Basically, a combat monster, with almost full casting of both the arcane and divine variety.

Reckless, you're mad, mad, MAAADDDD...

Name: Thak Val Zsing
Race: Male Dwarf
Class(es): Bard (Dervish of Dawn), Brawler (Mutagenic Mauler), Medium
Mythic path: Undecided
Alignment: LG
Backstory: It's hard for him to remember who he was. He left home a simple bard, a storyteller looking for stories. Then he just kept finding more challenges, getting drawn into more conflicts and problems, and he had to learn and change so much to survive. He had to become a leader, a sage, a cutting warrior and a skilled diplomatic. What is he now? Earthfist, Duke of the Eighth Mountain, something about Lord of the Krovensi People? Maybe with this ziggurat, he can throw himself into a simple, isolated problem, and from its trials emerge... as himself.

Reckless, for the purposes of Hierophant/Archmage arcanas/surges, are Occult spells Arcane, Divine or neither?

I think Drakroo might be done.

He ended up being a Custom Race version of a Kobold, so I could ditch the awful, 5 RP kobold build, and I went for a Dex and Con based Rogue/Monk/Swashbuckler.

He's got a whole boatload of skills, though nothing magical (class-based or otherwise) save Mythic paths stuff. I went Trickster, path dabbling into Fast Healing for some seriously long term survivability.

Offense-wise, he's can flurry with his bite attack, which is buffed with Noxious Bite...so living things beware. That DC 36 Fort Save on every successsful bite is unpleasant at best -- enjoy 9 rounds of nausea if you fail...

I think all that's left to do for Kit is transfer his stats from the Google Doc to his profile.

You know, I thought I was doing well with an AC of 39 without wearing any armor, but then I looked at Drakroo. XD That's a pretty crazy number you have there! Honestly, if I'd gone with Kit's original build (he's my Reign of Winter character), he'd have gone for Fighter (Free Hand Fighter) -> Duelist in his third slot instead of Magus, but... Magus fits his long-term character arc better (he had a thing about trying to ignore his innate magic for a while and finally coming to terms with it shortly before the campaign ended), it makes him more versatile, and he only took Duelist because Swashbuckler didn't exist until halfway through the campaign. But still, another +7 to dodge AC would have been nice.

Now... do I want to build Zakhin'Dakh? Okay, yes I do, but do I want to wait until I've actually played this build of Kit first?

The no magic items thing is strange and intriguing. People who work on their own power and nobody else's.

Alright, time to brainstorm. I'm thinking some kind of crazy martial type. Fighter/Swashbuckler/?. Mostly all I can think of is the stuff I'll get combining a light blade trained vanilla fighter with a vanilla swashbuckler, or maybe a flying blade with ricochet toss combined with a vanilla fighter. The high DEX, combat reflexes, and smash from the air mean I can literally cut boulders, ballista bolts, and magic in half with that little dagger if I go flying blade. Then I can take advanced armor and weapon trainings to do really cool stuff. Maybe throw in some Unchained Rogue for even more DEX based goodness? Or a CHA-based psychic caster like the mesmerist? Steal Ammo is a fun trick.

I think it's funny how many of us are going Swashbuckler/Rogue.

I'm considering the rogue but I'm not decided on it yet. I might go Oracle or something similar. Something that gives me lead blades. Speaking of, oh mighty GM, what is your stance on the lead blades spell and thrown melee weapons?

Not a single rogue or swashbuckler here.

Bloodrager, Sorceror, Oracle, and Half-dragon.

It's just that the swashbuckler/rogue classes get posted first. They don't need to select 93 spells in three different classes.

There is that. :D

Eeeenteresting. If it were any other OP I'd assume it was just another troll Recruitment. =)

What kind of tech level are we looking at? I was considering being part Gunslinger but that may not fit. Then again, with only 5000 gp, it may not fit anyway.

I've always wanted to play a Gunslinger/Grand Marshal character, and having him stroll up as a potential God of Justice or something would be rad.

@Sundakan, With 48 levels, you can probably afford to get a few of bard, cleric, oracle, sorcerer or ranger. Then you can get abundant ammunition.

Hmmm... had a second idea. I guess I'll be building two tristalt characters concurrently.

3d6: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 2) = 12
2d6: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 6) = 9

It's not the ammo, it's the sheer cost of the guns themselves. A Shotgun alone is the whole 5k, unless guns are Commonplace.

Also, just noticed...do you REALLY think Tieflings, Aasimar and Drow are powerful enough to warrant a level adjustment?

Grand Lodge

Dotting for funsies!

Now, what to make...
Kineticist/Lore Warden (Fighter)/Urban Bloodrager me thinks....

Crazy? I got your Crazy right here! :)

They count as neither, but I would allow you to designate the arcana/surges as working with Occult Spells INSTEAD of Divine/Arcane.

I think we've got a few complete or nearly complete characters, so I'm going to kick things off next week. Gotta give myself time to set up some of these challenges, but I believe I will be able to run the following:

Monday June 27th at 1PM EST
Tuesday June 28th at 4PM EST
Wednesday June 29th at 10 AM EST

Other slots may become available after I've figured out my wife's schedule.

These will be the first of these games, so there may be a bit of a learning curve on difficulty/timing. Remember you don't lose anything by losing/failing. Who wants to be the first Potential to step forth?

If my work changes my schedule, I will be sure to post any changes here. Also, if anyone gets bumped because of a change in my work schedule, I'll do my best to work out a rain game via PMs to accommodate.

Awww, none of those times work for me... well, I suppose I'll wait and see if you can open up other slots.

I'll have to see if I can finish my dragon disciple before one of those slots; I'll let you know.

I did have a question, though.
If I take a template (such as half-dragon), how much of that would be lost when under a polymorph effect (specifically, Form of the Dragon)?

Bummer. I'd roll Bolt Ace, but the image just isn't as cool.

I do still like the "Hammer of Justice" idea though. I'll figure out an alternative in the theme. Inquisitor of Abadar/???/???.

That brings up another question: is this on Golarion?

In other words, do we use Golarions' history, gods, nations and such?

For familiarity's sake, let's say yes.

Drat, those times don't work well for me. I've got one character almost completed and the other well on it's way. It's going to be hell trying to decide between them. The empress of nature or the most dangerous knick-knacks.

I can't find some of these Bonus Feats you're giving for free stats. What do Brisk Spell, Spell Denial, and Scale and Skin do?

Also, Necromantic Affinity has a pretty hefty drawback (hurt by Cure spells), can we opt out of that Feat, or do we only get the upside and no downside?

Alright, I've most of the sheet done. Gimme a shout if you have any issues with it. I don't think I'll bother to pre-calculate attacks since there'll be so many buffs and styles it'll be best done on the fly.

One more question here: what's the limit on which "monstrous races" we can play?

By approval, or free access as long as we pay the levels, or what?

I'm curious as to if you allow Weapon Attunement on Unarmed Strikes? And if so, do you use the two-weapon leveling on it, that I have seen on the forums, or do you use Unarmed Strikes as "one" weapon?

Also, do you have any limits on Summoners and their archetypes?

I'd like to know the same, but with natural weapons.
