One thing that is obvious to Malcolm and Des is Malcolm is on the wrong side of the wall. he is staring down at a host of orcs with loaded crossbows and bows, who have removed the crossing planks. Everyone one else is able to use the walls as cover/shelter.

Grung at L,20 you can see that the trench is close to 10 feet wide and 20 feet deep, there is a line of spikes on the bottom of the trench, it is also filled with nasty orc waste. You do see at least one plank in the trench a remnant of something that must have previously fallen.
