The bells atop the Temple of Erastil toll their midday song, echoing throughout the quiet town of Kassen. As the peals begin to fade, the first of the townsfolk make their way into the square, dressed in black, as if attending a funeral. They slowly fill the square, moving quietly across the cold, hard ground, their eyes downcast and mournful. After a few moments, a murmur passes through the crowd as it slowly parts to let Mayor Uptal through. He leads the way with a tarnished silver lantern. Behind him, an old pony drags a cart laden with
backpacks and supplies.

Once he reaches the center of the crowd, Mayor Uptal stops and calls out to the assembled townsfolk. “Once again the winter winds blow through the Verduran Forest, marking the end of another harvest. There are wolves in the woods, howling at our walls, and serpents in our shadows, waiting to strike. Just as it was one hundred and seventy-four years ago, when Kassen himself left these walls to protect us, so it is today. Where are the heroes? Where are the brave folk that will venture out to Kassen’s tomb and retrieve the flame to keep this community
safe for another winter?

This will be my first try as a GM for a PBP game. I've been playing TTRPG for the past 20 years both as player and GM. I do intend to see this through and if it goes well, to follow this story with The Dragon's Demand. For that to work I moved Kassen to Taldor just north of Cassomir in the Verduran Forest.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Now Character Creation:
Level 1
Abilities 25 pt buy
Races Core + ARG feature races. Alternate racial traits are fine.
Classes Any paizo classes that are on the PRD.(For the summoner, go with the unchained version)
No Evil. No exceptions.
Max HP 1st level, 2nd level and up are rolled. Rerolling any 1's.
Traits x2 No traits that increase starting gold. No drawback.
Wealth Average or rolled character wealth for your class.
Background Skills

Background Short background only. You are all from the town or the immediate surrounding.

If you have questions or suggetions, I am open to both.

Dotting for interest.

As far as traits go, are you alright with campaign traits from the APs (as long as they make sense)?

Talomyr wrote:

Yes. Just mention from which APs it come from.

Also, do we get one or two traits?

I am interested, let me poke around and see what ideas come to mind.

I was thinking the pioneer trait from Kingmaker.

Pioneer Trait:
You have long lived in the shadow of wilderness. Life has been hard, but through hunting, trapping, trading, and coaxing crops from the freezing earth, you’ve learned how to survive on the rugged frontier. With the wilderness ever at your door, you’ve also learned much about its denizens and the wild creatures that lurk in that unwholesome land. Your family might even claim holdings, with elders telling stories of being driven from or robbed of a lost ancestral homestead, fertile farmlands, bountiful orchards, or a hidden mining claim. Whether because of your personal expertise and familiarity with the borderlands or in order to reclaim your family’s land, you’ve joined the expedition.

Benefit: You begin play with a horse. Also, choose one of the following skills: Climb, Handle Animal, Knowledge (nature), Perception, Ride, Survival, or Swim—you gain a +1 trait bonus on this skill.

I'm thinking of submitting a hunter that has been around the Verduran Forest region (and Kassen in particular) off and on for the past few years.

Here's the hunter in question, Garrik Korianthil. Outside of going back and redoing his equipment (to make sure I haven't over spent) I think he's pretty much ready to go based on your character generation specifications.

Dotting and plotting. What to make?

@Burnscar : You get 2 traits

@Talomyr : Ok for the Pioneer trait

@Gufi A Goblin? What else? ;)

Silver Crusade

Here's Gufi's submission: My favorite cleric.

Rastaf of Sarenrae wrote:

Isn't that a PFS character? I was wondering, cause I am not running this as a PFS game.

Kakrish Stonetoe, a Dwarf Warpriest, raises his hand and steps foward when the Mayor made his request. "Yes sir! I am ready!" he looks around to make sure that Duerli was watching. He gave her a wink. I must look pretty brave to her now, he thought to himself.

Dot

Dotting. I've got a sorcerer in the works. Just have to add the background.

I never played him in a PbP game. It was just an alias for a while. I don't care about PFS.

Looks like we could use a frontliner. I'm looking at a bloodrager or a barbarian type.

Gufi here, again. I'm reusing an alias since I have so many. Looking at a bloodrager, probably arcane bloodline. Just a big brute!

Stats done, gotta do everything else.

Ok, so far we have:

- Garrik Korianthil, Hunter
- Kakrish Stonetoe, Warpriest of Gorum
- Hoga the half orc, Bloodrager
(I'm guessing you are going with this one Gufi and not the cleric.)

Looking good.

I've got Taladrius Syre here for your consideration. Human sorcerer with the Elemental(Earth) bloodline. You requested a short background, but I might have cut it a bit too short though.

The Exchange

Do you mind if we have played/ran the module several times? Will keep in character and out of character knowledge separate.

I'd be game to make a character for this, but I have to disclose that I've played it before. I'm ok with playing follow the party for the sake of not spoiling anything. It really just gives me an excuse to try out a class I haven't used yet... such as a kineticist.

Since this module is pretty straight foward, I don't mind if you have already went through it.

Updated list:

- Garrik Korianthil, Hunter
- Kakrish Stonetoe, Warpriest of Gorum
- Hoga the half orc, Bloodrager
(I'm guessing you are going with this one Gufi and not the cleric.)
- Taladrius Syre, Sorcerer

There's a warpriest. That's cleric-y. Curious to try the bloodrager. Haven't played one.

--------------------
A tengu who lives near the town, working as a shepherd. Adopted by human parents when his parents were found washed up drowned by the river near the town. They had been clutching an egg, which shortly hatched. The tengu that grew from that chick had an odd coloration, he had random feathers that were crimson red instead of black. These strangely off-colour feathers had earned him the name 'red raven', since for the first several months of his life his parents hadn't even thought he would grow into a thinking being. (which led to several somewhat embarrassing moments)

Red Raven stuck, and he shepherds his family's herds for them. While in the fields, he had met a curious wanderer, who recognized his potential and taught him several techniques over the years, having him practice the same technique for weeks until his wanderings brought him back into town. His skills have honed, and after working things out with the blacksmith, managed to get some weapons that could use his skill when he defended the herds from predators.

He volunteered to participate in the ritual of the everflame, since he was about the right age, and he wanted a chance to test his skills against something real.

Can I use rescued trait from Jade Regent?

I will allow it. But you should know that the game will move away from the village and you will not see your savior in combat often.

List:

- Garrik Korianthil, Hunter

- Kakrish Stonetoe, Warpriest of Gorum

- Hoga the half orc, Bloodrager

- Taladrius Syre, Sorcerer

- Agghh the Unclean, Wizard

- Red Raven, Monk

- Tamora, Inquisitor

I'll be closing applications soon. I already have a hard time deciding on who to keep.

I'm going to back off. It looks like you have enough interest, so someone that hasn't played it before should get the opportunity.

That's very thoughtful of you.

Starting Gold: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 2, 6) = 16

Edit: 20 more gold than avg. Not bad.

Starting Gold: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 3, 5) = 17 x 10 = 170 gp

Ok, now to re-equip.

Equipment purchased.

I am working on writing up a character for this, and I had a question. On the d20 page for tieflings here, there is a sidebar about non-human tieflings, and how they are stats-wise identical to tieflings, with the exception of size. So, a halfling-tiefling would be legal, and it would be mechanically identical to the tiefling, only Small size, right? Would you allow that?

I'll say no here. I'd rather stay with the way it is done here : Tiefling

With that, I'm going to close application. Those that posted before this post, you can continu to built your character for submission. For those that who have already finish, you can polish it to make it even harder on me for the selection. ;)

I would like to select the characters this weekend and open the gameplay late sunday night to early monday morning.

Lots of good characters. Tough choices for the GM.

I know! If this was for a table top game I would gladly keep everyone. Right now that mean 8 people. Don't know how well it would be in the PBP format though.

I haven't played a PbP with 8 PCs (max 6) but I'm wondering if it wouldn't just be easier. With block initiative and everyone giving you the permission to bot them if they don't respond quick enough, I think it would work.

Or maybe it would be a great disaster. :-)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

8 pcs is way too much IMO.

I need to bow out of this one, I'm afraid. Running out of time to put anything together, and I don't want to hold up the show. Have fun!

My other game on another forum has that number and it worked for 3 months. It still could work assuming everyone is committed to the game unless they get sucked away by RL.

8 would be a lot o.o The biggest game I've ever played in at an actual table only had 5 with the occasional 6th, and even then it would get a bit hectic.

IMHO, it actually would work better in PBP than tabletop. You have to have a party that trusts one another to cover if/when RL pulls them away from the game.

You have enough personalities active at any given time to keep things moving. However, you might have that player that does not gel or lacks the trust or whatever and then the whole thing fails. But I have seen that on much smaller parties, too.

Not advocating as much as saying it could work. I think it would be better to start with a more traditionally-sized party and grow as necessary, as opposed to starting with a large party, though.

I'm just surprised I got all those applications. I though for sure I would have a harder time since this will be my first pbp game. And after looking all the characters I'm very curious to see how each woild turn out.

Of course I could try to run 2 tables of 4 but I think that would stretch me too much. I'll give myself another 24 hrs to make a decision.

Thank you all for your patience.

The longest PbP game I ran went to about 8th level. There were only 4 goblin players, and we changed 2 of them. Lasted a year and a half.

The more players, the longer it takes. 4 or 5 is enough.

dotting

Ok, so here is the selection

- Garrik Korianthil, Hunter

- Kakrish Stonetoe, Warpriest of Gorum

- Hoga the half orc, Bloodrager

- Taladrius Syre, Sorcerer

- Red Raven, Monk

- Tamora, Inquisitor

We are going to start with 6 PCs. Hopefully for the first part we are not going to lose anyone. See you guys in the discussion thread.

I like a combat-oriented group. Bring on the melee!
