Long Roads Coffeehouse - Part 3

Laria smiles at Rexus' compliment, then says "Bah!" and waves a hand at Orrias' ridiculous expressions.

Once you've all been fully caffeinated, and devoured a small army's rations in pastries, Laria gives Rexus a wave and points to a door in the back. Rexus nods, and urges all of you to go with her. "It's her office, as safe a place for our conversation as any."

The seven of you amble in there (drawing a few eyes), and the proprietor has made seats available for all. She stands and leans against her desk, then begins. "So, Rexus rolled in smelling of the sewers and cheap wine last night to tell me that the six of you have agreed to help him in his venture." She holds a serious face for a moment, then chuckles. "Good on him! I can't say that any of my adventures ever started more auspiciously than that. So you went under the Livery, then? Couldn't have been pleasant, but there must have been something driving you to go there, more than just Rexus. I know why I'm helping someone who just had his family's entire estate burned down and destroyed, and I'd love to hear why each of you signed on for this with him!"

She provides each of you a chance to share what's motivating you to help rebuild the Silver Ravens.

A Safe Place and a Favor - Part 1

"As for me," she continues, "My help for Rexus is for two reasons. First, I'm associated with a group you may have heard of," she pointedly eyes Pip as she says this, "The Bellflower Network. We've been opposing Thrune as long as anyone, and I've taken it upon myself to know as much as I can about the city's other similarly aligned secret and not-so-secret groups. However, under Barzillai's literal scorched-earth policy, most of my information network has been killed, arrested, or run to the ground. I'll be happy to share with you anything I know, and hopefully most of it will still be accurate."

She takes a drink of her own coffee, looks at Rexus, then says, "I was also a good friend of Rexus' mother, Irori keep her soul. This got personal for me when the Night of Ashes went down. So, I want to help you in your endeavor. Firstly - anytime you need a hideout, instead of going to your own homes, you make your way here and I'll put you up, free of charge. I don't know that you'll want to live here long term, of course, but if you know how to bake a pastry I could probably put you to work at the oven.

"Secondly, it sounds like the Livery is no fit place to headquarter a rebellion. The smell alone would be enough, and who knows how long it would take to drive out the gremlins. But here, anyone could come and go from a coffeehouse any time of the day and no one would be the wiser. You couldn't do business in the main room, of course, but you could use the tunnels below. I call them the Wasp Nest - you'll see why - and they've been good in the past for smuggling goods and freed slaves. Since my slave-moving activities have been limited by the Lord Mayor," she sighs, "I've been loaning the tunnels to a friend of mine, Nan Comerivos, looking to get Varisian textiles into the markets. He's been down there hiding out for days now, laying low until he gets a buyer. At least, I've been hoping that he's just hiding out down there, since the wine and food I leave out at the basement steps each day keep disappearing, but at night I swear I'm hearing some kind of inhuman laughter down there."

She straightens, gulps down the rest of her coffee, and gives you each a direct look. "I've got an appearance to keep up, one that needs me to not go disappearing, too. If you all help me and see what's happened to Nan down there, the tunnels are yours to use as a headquarters, and you're welcome here as often as you like. What say you?"

I'm presuming she doesn't know too much about the Bellflowers, only a few rumors
Slips? Rescuing slaves and trading information? I've been a fool! Of course they can do that. They walk by unnoticed through so much of Cheliax. It seems I have indeed underestimated the small folk. I'm beginning to see how much I have misjudged their utility and craft.

When Indra hears Laria refer to the underground tunnels as the "Wasp Nest," her mouth falls open: she knows she has been led here by her goddess. "I wish to see the church of Calistria resume it's rightful place in Kintargo, but I also have personal complaints against Thrune. We will discuss them when we have more time," she says, her knuckles cracking as she thinks of the many offenses that the Thrunes will pay for.

"I thank you for the offer of hospitality," she says. Hmm, I'm becoming better at this 'manners' thing, she muses. "I believe we shall be becoming better acquainted."

"I heard a few inhuman laughs after Pip's performance last night," Indra quips. "But we must have a look. It is meant to be," she adds.

Just before Laria leaves, Indra asks her, "Before you go, have your spies heard any news of Shensen? I was hoping to see her at the protest."

Orrias leans back in his chair as Laria says her piece, eyeing each of the others speculatively as they voice their motivations. "I've lived in Kintargo for a while, long enough to take a good hard look at what this empire is and has done since the end of the civil war. It is in the best interests of the entire world that the Infernal Empire be destroyed, though I will settle for crippled in your lifetimes."

Surprisingly, Pip's mouth is not full when his turn comes around, neither are his cheeks smeared with powdered sugar.
This is clearly a matter he takes seriously, so he wants to be taken seriously in its regards.

"My family are slaves indentured to the Tanessen family. Once upon a time, when the Tanessen's eldest son visited Vyre, he brought my father and pregnant mother along. Owing to an impeccable confluence of coincidences - my birth falling on Even-Tongued Day, Vyre's relative autonomy from Cheliax, the fact that the Tanessen lad had taken his father's property without permission, and the fact that there was a duck present - I was legally born free, unlike my siblings."

"Frankly, this has been a great cosmic irony that I've loathed for my entire life. It's an unfair jest, and I want to see my family free. No, more than that...I want to see all our people freed."

He sits back in his chair, taking a few moments to collect himself.
Later, once Laria explains her own role, Pip smiles again and looks to his companions

"We're going to become quite the experts on prodding Wasps' Nests, arent't we?"

Sara - I'm assuming for now that you're along for the ride. Don't worry, Ruina can come this time, too. :)

To Nerris - "It may take some further harm, but you'll have the ability to be a scalpel instead of a broadsword, if you like."

To Alexite - "I'm not looking forward to seeing the source of the laughter either, but no one wants it gone more than me! Hard enough living over a coffee house without that going on down there."

To Indra - Laria blinks for a moment, then breaks into a wide grin. "Well, you're going to love it down there, then. That is, once we figure out what's gone wrong with the place. Just look over in the water - you'll see. I'm glad that you're happy with the hospitality! As for Shensen," she sighs, "The opera singer gone missing? She was a devoted worshiper of Sarenrae, and both she and the cult of Milani operating here under the name 'The Rose of Kintargo' have both gone silent. I haven't had a chance to investigate further, and I'm not sure they had enough support structure in place to provide aid at this time."

To Orrias - "Good then!" she simply remarks.

To Pip - Laria nods somberly. "I had a feeling that you might have family so afflicted, but I'm glad that you are able to be free. Once my network gets back up in place and running again, we'll see what we can do for your family, and for all of our people."

A Safe Place and a Favor - Part 2

Below the coffeehouse lies a secret bolt-hole, created by the Bellflower Network a decade ago by knocking down the walls between Laria’s basement and the neglected basements of her neighbors. In the process, Laria discovered a secret shrine left by worshipers of Calistria during the goddess’s heyday in Kintargo; inspired by this discovery, she began referring to the new safe house as the Wasp Nest.

Ceiling height in the Wasp Nest is 10 feet. Each chamber has several empty torch sconces, but all are currently quite dark.

The first room of the basement contains numerous crates of cooking ingredients, sacks of coffee beans, and other supplies needed to maintain a thriving business.

"To put it simply, I just want to help people. I've worked with the poor and downtrodden for years now but whats been going on the past few days with Thrune is just too much. With Ragathiel's guidance I hope we can put an end to this madness." Sara explained, warm coffee in hand.

As they're lead towards the tunnels, Sara is relieved that Ruina can acompany her this time. It felt awkward in a way to be without her lifelong companion for their time in the livery. Once in the room she takes hold of her bow and glances about, events from the previous night still fresh in her mind on what could be hiding anywhere. "I'm afraid I must concede my ignorance. What is this Bellflower Network?" he asks Laria. "Frankly, I am quite new to the more underground sides of the Silver City. Is this something I should know about?"

.....

In the basement, Pip inhales deeply to savor the smell of yeast, honey, and coffee beans.

"I approve of this new direction if only for the improvement in atmosphere."

Pip fishes a pair of candles from his belt pouch.

"Well, I'm quite the dolt. I bought these at the bridge market but have neither a way to light them nor to hold them."

Laria smiles at Pip. "I'm not surprised. We have to keep fairly secretive to make sure that nothing is compromised. Usually, the Network only reveals itself when we know for sure that we can get one of our folk out. Until then, we plan, and watch, and wait for just the right moment. Otherwise, it'd be harvest time for all of us. When you get done downstairs and after you get these three to Songbird Hall, come back sometime and we'll talk more about the Network." She also brings you a burning taper to light one of your candles for the basement.

- - - - -

Ruina sniffs about, and growls towards the secret door. She's obviously caught something's scent - but what?

Laria nods to you all. "Try not to make too much of a ruckus, if possible. I can't wait to have to explain this one to the regulars!" She chuckles and heads back up the stairs.

You trigger the switch, and swing the hidden door back into darkness. Once you get a light (or darkvision) inside, this long, damp hallway opens to the southeast into a large reservoir of calm, dark water. A wooden pier extends twenty feet into the water, while another twenty feet out rises the top half of a statue of a beautiful elven woman. A foul smell, like that of rotting meat, comes from somewhere near the pier. Two holes have been knocked into the northwest walls to provide access to chambers beyond.

Tragically, even if his allies brought the enchanted items, Pip remains clueless to their natures.

.....

Pip pries a loose nail from a box in the basement and presses it into the base of the candle to be lit, creating an impromptu holder.

The prospect of secret doors and hidden passageways excites the slip, prompting memories of when he and Soria would hide adventure stories inside books of dense lyric poetry during lessons at the temple.
The excitement grows upon discovering the hidden grotto, then immediately wanes when the rotting smell strikes him.

"Can someone lie to me and promise that at least one of our outings will not involve foul odors?"

Orrias' eyes go wide as a beast--seemingly all pale scales and too many teeth--hauls itself onto the pier. Leaping back, his hand flies to his breast pocket, withdrawing a small vial that the elf quickly downs.

5ft Step + withdraw Shield vial + drink. AC20 now

That's wrong. All my dexterity and constitution based rolls are down one.I had horrible luck with that disease. Also, yay something I can hit without splashing onto allies. Now lets hope my luck isn't as bad as my other characters where I couldn't hit AC 5 with a black tentacle bomb.

Nerris blinks a few times at the giant alligator or crocidile. Even under the best of circumstances she could never tell the differences. Trying to angle the bomb out of the way of Orrias she lobs the bomb with less finesse than she would normally have causing it to veer wildly.

Nature: 1d20+7
Attack: 1d20+4
I fumbled the bomb.... 4 dmg DC 13 half.

Just to confirm, total should be 9 instead of 11, correct?

It's a seven. The penalty is -4 for shooting into melee.

Indra's shot goes very wide!

Alexite steps up to hit, but can't get his footing right, and his attack misses.

Nerris' bomb explodes just above the croc, but it manages to avoid most of the damage. As far as she can tell, it's a powerful, fully grown crocodile, that just happens to be albino from inbreeding or years spent underground. You know that none of you want to be caught in it's mouth if it bites you!

Orrias scoots backwards to (relative) safety for the moment, leaving Alexite alone against the beast.

SaraBOT runs forward to the edge of the water, and takes a shot at the Croc, but it just misses. Ruina stays out of the fight for now until more space opens up.

Pip's firework goes off perfectly, but the creature doesn't appear to be dazzled by its effects.

Rexus steps forward, bravely, and touches Orrias on the shoulder to grant remind the elf, "You are destined for great things - strike hard!" (+1 to your next d20 roll)

The crocodile then gives Alexite it's attention. It slaps at the fighter with its tail and lands a crushing blow against Alexite's leg. (-12 HP: Alexite is unconscious)

It then lurches forward a step to bite at Orrias again, this time landing the chompers, but unable to secure a grip on the slender elf. (-5 HP to Orrias)

The party is up! Alexite is at -3 HP.

Pip thought to fight a watery lizard with a fiery one, but the effort failed and a friend now lies bleeding because of it.

The beast would never understand his more subtly incisive wit.
If this is to be a base and brutish fight, then the slip will rise to the occasion and stoop to the necessary level.

"You son of a handbag! How dare you try to feast on someone far greater than you? Or Alexite, for that matter? I thought that corpse smelled bad, but then you reared your pale, festering bulk from Calistria's waters! I'd turn your hide into a pair of boots, but my bare, hairy feet would be remarkably more fashionable!"

Pip hurls invectives to incite and Hypnotize the beast and distract it from the others.

Delightful, Pip, and good shot, Indra! I'll resolve each of those in order, especially Pip's hypnotize in case earlier actions can cause more damage, as Indra's attack definitely lands the hit and damage.

Nerris drinks her cognatogen, and Rexus gives her a worried look when she gets more stumbly.

EDIT: An early version of the last post had looked at the wrong Indra post. It's been corrected to reflect the successful hit. So far, the Croc has lost 8 HP. Carry on!

I'm puzzled about why my critical damage got applied twice? Also thank you for rolling far better than I was!

The second (at the end of the post) was a coup de grace (just in case)! Figured y'all would want to make sure that it was dead, but, as always, if you ever disagree with any of my BOT actions, PLEASE let me know and we can retcon as appropriate, especially if you'd like to try and tell me how you get an unconscious 14-foot long albino alligator out of the basement of a coffeehouse without attracting attention. I suppose about the same way you'd get a dead one out, but, you know, your call!

Alexite, your eyes flutter open and Rexus and Nerris both stand above you, administering healing aid. Though your leg is now just sore, it's no longer broken. However, you are still staggered by the amount of damage you've taken, and Rexus continues to hold out the healing potion for you, if you wish to take it.
