Nidjena Cantabriar |
Well, as I said, you'll be wanting to leave very soon yourself.
Get near the door and get Grumblejack ready. I'll go get the fireworks ready.
Nidjena gleefully rushes off to the storeroom (room 13). She piles some torches in the middle of the floor and knocks a barrel of lamp oil all over them. Then she pushes the other barrel up close next to the pile.
She stands back to admire her handiwork, then casts spark on the pile of torches. Finally, she runs back towards the others.
It's about to get warm in here!
Saulric The Black |
Saulric quickly explains to Grumblejack his part in the plan and waits for Nidjena so that she can begin lying. Then let's get this show on the road. After you miladies.
GM Qwerty |
After your mock trial for arson you were sent to Brandescar prison to do your time while you await your fate of death by burning. You received your brand from the Prison Guard Sergeant Thomas who gleefully put the hot iron to your skin mocking you as your flesh seared. After that you were sent to a holding cell in the back corner to await your fate. Your mouth got the better of you and you were given a pretty rough beating at the hands of some of the guards who lost relatives in the fire. You were unconscious in another cell when four other criminals where brought to the cells. They were placed in a different cell than yours. While you were out, you had dreams of yelling, screaming fighting and such, but you never awoke. When you did awake hours later you saw a scene outside your cell that was bloody and violent. Dead guards, mutilated bodies, blood and refuse strewn about. Using one mans hacked of arm you managed to obtain a set of keys left on the floor. Freeing yourself, you got out and looked around the bodies. One of the bodies looked as if it had been torn apart from the stomach and was dressed as a prisoner. A glint of light caught your eye under the mans arm. You pick up a burnt orange and gold ring that seemed to have been casually dropped there as if by accident... or fate...
You put on the burnt orange ring and the gem glows for a brief moment with a pentagram and then the pentagram fades as your finger burns. You get a +1 inherent bonus to one Physical Stat and +1 to one Mental Stat. You are also healed as per the Heal spell (so not fatigued and your max HP). The ring also provides a +1 profane bonus to AC, and a +1 profane bonus to saves. You seem to instantly know how to cast the 0 level spell Prestidigitation. If you try to take it off you find out that you can't. Adjust your character.
Regaining your wits you hear sounds of battle or a commotion down the stairs... you go down to investigate and come across dead guards in the hallway and the sounds of prisoners (?) running amok...they could be your ticket out...
Nidjena starts a fire in the storeroom and it goes up with a quickness...the four members move back to the hallway and hear a stumbling figure coming down the stairs that once lead to their cell...
Zachris Swayne |
Zachris holds his hands up in a display of non-aggression. "Peace, friends." He brushes a strand of greasy brown hair out of his face and takes stock of the crew in front of him.
"Are you breaking out? I want in." The sorcerer flashes his most convincing smile. "And I can pull my weight."
Zachris summons a lightless flame in one of his palms and shows it to the others before quickly dismissing the prestidigitation.
Nidjena Cantabriar |
Nidjena, still running towards the others, turns mid-step at the sound of the newcomer.
Ah. A man after my own heart. A little fire suits this place well. So, pray tell us who on Earth you are and why we should trust you?
Her voice drops a tone for the last line, and she drops into a position ready to cast a spell should the newcomer say anything wrong.
Zachris Swayne |
"I'm Zachris Swayne," he explains his tone becoming impatient. "And right now your trust is irrelevant. Do I look like a guard?" Zachris gestures to the filthy rags he wears.
"At this moment our goals align and we are wasting time."
Nidjena Cantabriar |
Nidjena's face raises again at the answer.
Well I must say you make a good case. I'm Nidjena. These are Carol and Saulric And Cedric, if he's still about. We're getting out of here. The plan is to use these uniforms to disguise ourselves as guards, as "escort" this big lumbering ogre here straight out the front door. With any luck, the distraction I just set off in the storeroom will buy us all the time we need.
She looks the man up and down.
I'd say we could pretend to escort you too, or if you want to salvage the uniform off of a guard you can join our little ruse. Either way, if any of the guard's gear is useful I suggest you grab it now. We need to get moving as soon as possible.
Zachris Swayne |
"Well met," Zachris replies. "I can certainly perform in the role of wretch, but we might have a difficult time explaining away our large companion. It would seem more prudent that I dress as a guard as well, although it could interrupt my magic."
If given the opportunity, Zachris will take a set of guard gear, the peasant clothes, and the comb-shiv.
Saulric The Black |
Escort the ogre? How daft are you? The plan was to have them believe we were fleeing from him.
Nidjena Cantabriar |
That would make considerably more sense... I really should read back now and then!
Yes Saulric dear, I was just seeing who was listening. He has the right of it, we are to pretend to be running from the Ogre. Then while the guards are distracted, we run.
Saulric The Black |
I do hope he survives. The muscle could be useful down the line.
Saulric The Black |
Far as I know, and that was my intention. Though apparently I did not explain it well.
Nidjena Cantabriar |
Your explanation was fine, I'm just forgetful!
Everyone ready? You know what to do Grumblejack?
Nidjena takes a look at the other 3 and nods silently in readiness.
On three, we throw open the door and leg it.
One...
Two...
THREE!
Saulric The Black |
Saulric throws open the door and runs forward screaming.
GM Qwerty |
new map up. just a reminder the hexes are 10ftx10ft.
Saulric and Carol rush out of the open doors screaming at the top of their lungs...Bluff check by Carol to sell the ruse with a +2 bonus due to the smoke coming out as well
the two ex-prisoners see two guards standing by the gate house towards their escape route and also notice two more guards patrolling up on the ramparts of the prison... the guards by the gatehouse immediately look over to the screaming pair trying to register what occurred...
Nidjena Cantabriar |
Loving the flame effect!
Nidjena rushes out of the building behind Saulric and Carol, trying her best to look scared. Spotting the two guards up ahead she turns and points to the ogre in mock alarm, continuing to rush backwards.
Casting message on Grumblejack.
Go for the guards by the gate, they look tasty.
It's going to kill us!
GM Qwerty |
the guards by the gate see the group running towards them and after hearing Carols truly believable story begin to falter in their resolve...they try and open the gate motioning for you running guards to join them behind the portcullis gate before the ogre reaches you... another guard calls out towards the guards up above and calls for them to retrieve their bows...
go ahead and post your actions, not in initiative order
Zachris Swayne |
Realizing that their cover is blown, Zachris casts aside the guard's shield he carries and throws an open hand in the direction of the two men guarding the gate.
"Cupio virtus licet!" he utters.
Casting sleep towards the guards about to grab their bows.(DC 15 Will).
Arcane Spell Failure (Low): 1d100 ⇒ 68
GM Qwerty |
since they are on separate ramparts you can only target one of the guards with the sleep spell. you are within range of targeting one of them, just pick left or right if you want to still do the spell action
The group maintains their ruse towards the gate and the ogre comes rumbling behind them...
the gate guards continue to motion to the ones in front to hurry as they open the gate up for the supposed fleeing guards to pass into for safety...
Saulric The Black |
Saulric continues the ruse, his sword in hand and prepared to strike as necessary.
Saulric The Black |
Saulric yells. Let it through! Trap it on the bridge!
GM Qwerty |
apologies- for clarity. once you go through the gate by the portcullis you are in the barbican, an enclosed guardhouse. the archers on the ramparts cannot see you since you entered a building... they can still see grumblejack though but Zachris needs to decide which guard he will target with his spell if any...
Nidjena Cantabriar |
As the guards have their backs to them, Nidjena will turn and draw her mace, step up to the nearest one and swing for his head in silence.
attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Saulric The Black |
Saulric drives his blade at the back of one of the guards.
ATK: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
DMG: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
GM Qwerty |
Nidjena and Carol manage to kill one of the guards who dies with a confused look on his face and when the second guard moves to attack the ladies Saulric runs him through...the group no controls the inner hallway of the gatehouse but Grumblejack is stuck on the other side of the door...
Saulric The Black |
Saulric looks at her, something dark in his eyes but keeps his mouth shut about leaving the ogre behind.
Saulric The Black |
The newcomer is correct, but at this point it doesn't matter. If we release him he may tear us apart. But Nidjena, speak for us in such a way again and next time my blade will be going through you. You've potentially turned a useful resource against us.
GM Qwerty |
The group leaves the ogre to his fate and rush through the barbican to the outer gate, opening it and then seeing the long bridge over the chasm and water leading to the town. From the journey to the prison they know at the end of the bridge is a guard shack...it is a long walk to across the bridge though...
Carol safan |
Carol draws her sword across the palm of her hand, she drips some of the blood into her hair and smears some more across her face. She the runs across the bridge fast as she can with the others just behind her. Screaming about how we barred the gates but that it was only a matter of time.
Bluff: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Saulric The Black |
Saulric follows Carol not bothering with the blood and shifting his makeshift bag to hide it from view.
GM Qwerty |
The group finds the guards at the guardshack slumbering and not fully wide awake. It is in the middle of the night and the guards do not expect anyone to come from the prison until morning...
"What is all the fuss about?" the first guard asks walking out of the guardshack...
SM: 1d20 ⇒ 7 oblivious to the ruse...
Saulric The Black |
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18 The ogre, it escaped. We'd been playing dice with the captain when the damn thing flew through the door from the cell block. It ATE him. We tried to fight but the damn thing ripped through us like a demon, we got away, but it's still in there. We have to go!
