Quest for Perfection Part I: The Edge of Heaven (Inactive)

Game Master Warped

In the distant land of Tian Xia, the Pathfinder Society's Lantern Lodge sends a team of agents high into the mountains of the Wall of Heaven to an abandoned Iroran monastery in search of a powerful relic to assist them in ensure victory in the upcoming Ruby Phoenix Tournament. Though the monastery has long laid unused by the faithful of the Master of Masters, it is not completely devoid of danger, and the PCs soon discover that merely retrieving the ancient artifact is but the beginning of a much larger quest.

Lantern Lodge Venture-Captain Amara Li sets her office up (located in her homeland of Goka) for the arrival of the Pathfinders she has summoned. After preparations have been made, she sits at her desk and waits for their arrival, quietly reading over an ancient tome sitting atop leaflets advertising an upcoming tournament.

You may post here to introduce your characters and to dot for future ease. We will not begin actual play until 5 April, though. Thanks!

A few heavy footsteps and a heavy knock at the door, followed by a tough-looking dwarf walking into the room. Oddly, the dwarf has not a bit of hair on his head, arms, or even a beard, and it looks as if he's not even got a bit of stubble.

"Aye there, me name is Gorn. Looking over the two in the room, and recognizing the Venture-Captain by the description he was provided. "I take it we be the first two to arrive for the situation?"

Gorn offers his hand to shake anyone who would take it.

A young Tian-Hwan woman enters Amara Li's office after a polite knock at the door, appearing quite nervous as she takes a few shaky steps inside. Her long, dark hair is quite the contrast to her pale, silvery eyes; and, as is normal for her race, she's quite short and thin, though there's a definite sense of agility and strength hidden about her figure nevertheless. She eyes the two already present with some trepidation, absentmindedly fiddling with her bangs near her left earlobe.

"H... Hello," she says stiltedly, automatically returning Gorn's offered handshake with a bow before she realises (while looking quite embarrassed about it) what she's supposed to do. She clasps the burly dwarf's hand weakly, obviously not used to the gesture. "I am Ryu Hyeon-ae. Um... I believe that would be Hyeon-ae Ryu over in the Inner Sea, though..." At a loss for what to do next, she bows again, and lapses into quietude. Over time, she does her best to slowly creep closer to Amara Lee, obviously feeling much more comfortable with the woman.

I wound up switching to Cavalier in the end. Hopefully the last change! :P

Another knock on the door signals yet another arrival. A Tian woman enters and takes a seat, nodding respectfully to the venture-captain. She may have been beautiful once, but her features have become harsh and her skin scarred in many places. It is obvious she leads a hard life, but she her posture suggests she bears it with a quiet dignity.

She says nothing to the others, but merely nods in recognition when greeted.

The next to arrive gives a token knock when he already has the door mostly open; in saunters a beaming Kelish youth. He gives his fine cloak an unnecessary flourish as he closes the door behind, and turns to face the room's occupants.

"A hundred verses of salutation! Noorzad the Handsome - called by some the Flower of Katapesh - at your service, and most delighted to be so."

Noorzad bows deeply, and holds it just long enough to make things uncomfortable before finding a place to stand.

It seems so long ago that you were sitting in the warm and dry office of Venture-Captain Amara Li, leader of the Lantern Lodge and Goka native.

The reason you were there she made clear, "The Pathfinder Society has turned its attention to the Ruby Phoenix Tournament - a world-renowned fighting competition, held once every ten years in the city of Goka on the eastern continent of Tian Xia. More specifically, the Decemvirate is interested in the incredible prizes available to the tournament's winner - a choice of treasure from the legendary vaults of Hao Jin, the Ruby Phoenix herself. As part of the preparations for the tournament, Pathfinder Society agents have been deployed across the Inner Sea and beyond to seek out forgotten lore, allies, and magical items to be used by the Society's tournament representatives."

She tapped a page in the ancient tome before her before proceeding, "I have uncovered information about one such item hidden amid the reaches of the Wall of Heaven - an Iroran relic known as the Braid of a Hundred Masters. I intend to send you to the high mountain range in search of the braid's ancient home: the Clouded Monastery."

A two-week-long journey from the cosmopolitan city of Goka, passing through the surrounding villages and farmlands, leads you and your group thousands of feet up into the tallest mountain range on Golarion; all that remains is the final day's journey up from the base camp.

Knowledge checks will be placed in the posts when relevant. Don't peek unless you make the proper Knowledge check and get the proper DC!

Knowledge (geography) DC 10+:
The Wall of Heaven—the tallest and longest mountain range on Golarion—creates a formidable barrier, separating Tian Xia from the west, save for a natural gap located near the city of Goka.

Knowledge (geography) DC 15+:
The Clouded Path Monastery stands a strong day’s climb above a base camp halfway up its mountain. While below the permafrost of its particular mountain’s peak, the monastery is known for its thin air and cold nights.

Knowledge (geography) DC 20+:
The Clouded Path Monastery is a truly old monastery, dedicated to the Iroran faith, and one of many such lamaseries spread throughout the isolated slopes of the Wall of Heaven. Some maintain that the monastery’s founder in fact knew Irori during the god’s mortal life.

Knowledge (local) or Diplomacy DC 10+:
Nobody has seen the monks of the Clouded Path Monastery in years. In the past, the monastery often sent a small group of them to the mountain’s base camp to trade for the goods the monks could not produce for themselves in the harsh mountain environment.

Knowledge (local) or Diplomacy DC 15+:
A demon of ice and snow made flesh, called Shang Xu by locals, prowls the mountains. Since the monks disappeared, it has come down to raid the farms and villages on several occasions.

Knowledge (local) or Diplomacy DC 20+:
The “demon” is not a demon at all, but rather a raving yeti that has established its territory well below the icy altitudes in which its kind normally hunt. With increasing regularity, the beast has attacked travelers in the low mountains and even settlements high in the foothills of Clouded Path Monastery’s peak.

When you arrive at the final village before the ascent to the monastery, you pick up two locals to guide you to the base camp, Xue Ho and Hai Xuan. They are both experienced mountaineers and are familiar with this stretch of the Wall of Heaven. They are both well under 6 feet in height, have lean frames and skin prematurely aged through exposure ot the mountain winds. The pair, though only capable of broken Common, have proven to be friendly and knowledgeable guides. They have been responsible for leading you through the lower reaches of the Wall of Heaven to this point, the base camp.

The base camp site, only a few hundred feet above the forest line that covers the lower reaches of the Wall of Heaven, offers a panoramic view of the surrounding farmlands, far below. The half-flooded terraced farmlands appear silver and mirrored in the late afternoon light. The camp itself is little more than a trio of unmaintained wooden shacks surrounding the remnants of a large fire pit and a fallen wooden corral fence to the east.

Hai Xuan explains that in years past, the monks of Clouded Path Monastery used this campsite at the foot of the path to their mountainside retreat to meet with the local farming populace to procure the few items that the monks could not produce for themselves within the monastery grounds, and as a way point for pilgrims to rest before their final day of ascent to the monastery itself. Since the monastery fell into disuse, the camp has also lain barren and untended, and is now little more than a few empty wooden shacks around a central campfire ring. The remains of a corral that once housed horses belonging to pilgrims traveling up the mountain on foot lies in shambles off to one side of the camp.

Map is under my name. Please let me know if you can't move the tokens or access the map. Thanks!

Cannot move Gorn on the map at all. Can alter his size if I needed to, though.

Gorn, moderately more comfortable with the "short" humans, he moves through the site, and looks across the countryside. He snorts at the disused buildings.

"Keepin' a building up be handy, 'specially for any extra things that need done or even for a traveler's rest. One might make a fine living usin' this place as an inn, even if it's just for elite folk who want some peace and and nice views."

What time of day is it? Can we start moving up now?

Meh, forgot to change the permissions from view only to edit. Should work now. Sorry!

Also, it's late afternoon, so it wouldn't be advisable to leave now, as you'd be traveling the more difficult terrain during the night and in freezing temperatures. There does look to be a fairly obvious path, though.

"Not used in a long time," Dagat concludes, standing up from the firepit. "Monastery hasn't much visitors. Will have to stay the night anyway."

The ranger looks up the mountain then down at her now obviously inadequate clothes. "Has anyone clothing suited for climbing? I have not brought, was not expecting such cold."

She glances to the east, spotting the fallen wooden fence. "Could use it to make fire," she notes.

Once they are at the camp the gunslinger whistles looking up at the mountain, "When I was discovering Saki earlier one of the fellows told me a story about a demon of ice and snow made flesh, called Shang Xu by locals, that prowls the mountains. Hyeon-ae shivers as they reach the base camp, though does her best to hide the moment of weakness. She'd never been to the mountains--only viewed them from afar in delicate landscapes--and the chill seeping into her bones was becoming unbearable. Astride her sturdy mount, a genteel horse by the name of Jin, the young Hwan girl sits straight-backed and awkward, feeling quite rude that all but she were forced to travel on foot instead of on horseback.

She keeps up a rapport with the two guides during their journey, chatting away to them in Tian; she seems much more comfortable with them than her new Pathfinder allies. Through them, she learns much about the Clouded Path Monastery that they were unable to express due to their limited handle of Taldane.

"With no monks around," she says quietly as the others discuss the abandonment, gently nudging Jin forwards to do a scout of the camp's perimeter. "and the presence of a 'demon' in the area, it is no wonder few come this way any longer. ... Or so I believe, yeoreobun."

To Zephri, she bobs her head and says, "Zephri-ssi, I am sorry, but Shang Xu is no demon in the traditional sense; that is no doubt a poor translation. Shang Xu is... I believe the word is yeti. Xuan-ssi was just telling me of how more regular its attacks have been."

Also, I added a horse token to the map as Hyeon-ae has her bonded mount Jin with her.

Gorn's attempts to retaliate are clumsily met as the combination of his own shield and the door frame make it awkward for him to fully maneuver himself for a solid hit. Berosius starts running towards the melee, as Dagat rises and fluidly pulls a bow out, notches an arrow, and lets it fly. It seems as if the arrow flies in slow motion as it finds its mark in the hide of the large cat in front of Gorn.

Enraged, the cat fights to get at the one who hurt it, biting and clawing at Gorn's shield to get through.

There was a frightful mess of drawings and borders around the cat, but I moved Gorn's and the cats tokens apart a bit. You'll be able to see now that the door is actually on the other side of Gorn. If you wish, I'll let you redo your move, so that you end up to the north of Gorn, but lose the ability to charge there. You'll still be able to attack, though, but only with a 16.

Slowly the life fades from the cat's eyes and a final exhalation of breath leaves its body.

A further search of the camp reveals nothing more dangerous than a stray splinter here or there. However, the entire ordeal has left the two guides visibly shaken. They confer with Hyeon-ae in their native tongue.

That works for me! It was pretty hard to see where the door was. Thanks, GM.

Hyeon-ae draws her blade back with one swift movement, splattering an arc of feline blood across the wall of the abandoned building. "Gorn-ssi, are you--" she begins worriedly, but the hardy dwarf is already halfway through a potion to restore all but the most superficial of puncture wounds. With a sigh of relief, she dismounts from Jin and peeks inside the shack.

"Why would a nunpyobeom have been in here...?" she wonders aloud, but has little time to consider the mystery before the frightened duo of guides approaches her. To them, she nods in understanding.

"我明白了. 我们将继续在我们自己从这里," she says quietly. "有什么我们应该知道之前, 我们分道扬镳?"

Regardless of their answer, Hyeon-ae will grasp their hands in turn and bow in thanks. "谢谢您的帮助, 朋友. 愿你的回家之旅是安全的."

Tien:

"I understand. We shall proceed on our own from here. Is there anything we should know before we part ways?"

"Thank you for your assistance, friends. May your journey home be safe."

Any chance I can try skinning the leopard with Survival to gain makeshift Furs?

Dagat puts away her bow and approaches the corpse of the cat, pulling out the now-useless arrow embedded in it and carefully inspecting it.

Gorn will stand up, stretch, and put away his axe and shield.

I believe a watch would be in order. I'm willin' to take the first watch. Who wants the second?"

@Dagat - Sure, it'd be a simple enough procedure to skin the leopard (DC 5). You'd only receive a +1 bonus from your improvised furs without the proper craft skills and tools, though. You do know of some who might even buy the beautiful pelt, as well.

@Zephri - Late afternoon approaching evening.

The two guides consult with each other for a bit before turning back to Hyeon-ae. Xue Ho tells her, "我们曾经很多年前朝圣的两兄弟. 我们可以为您提供指导, 让你不会失去你的方式."

As he tells her this, Hai Xuan crouches and grabs a stick, drawing lines and symbols in the loose dirt to the side of the path. Pointing at several different locations, he looks up at Hyeon-ae, making sure that she understands his crude map, "您将在这里开始您的旅程, 并按照道路在那里," pointing at the path that stretches beyond the far side of the camp.

He motions to two lines that run adjacent to each other, coming closer to the other before ending abruptly against a third line, "从这里一小时, 你会进入一个狭长的山谷, 在岩壁的结束. 有在墙壁上的裂缝, 其中包含一个隧道, 你将需要遵循, 高空作业."

Pointing to a line that snakes and curls on itself, he continues, "离开洞穴后, 您将前往另一个或两个小时. 攀登变得更容易在这一点上, 当你进入许多神社的路径."

Finally, he jabs his stick into the ground at a trough that slashes across the line, on the other side are two small stones standing next to each other, "该路径继续向上一个小时到达大决口, 指一个大桥建成之前. 过桥之后, 你知道你是几乎在两兄弟. 有附近的一个山洞里, 你可以用它来休息, 如果你愿意的话, 也是如此."

Tien:
"We have made the pilgrimage to the Two Brothers once, many years ago. We can provide you with direction so that you will not lose your way."

"You will begin your journey here, and follow the path there,"

"An hour from here, you will enter a narrow valley, which ends in a rock wall. There is a crack in the wall which contains a tunnel that you will need to follow, high above the ground."

"After exiting the cave, you will travel another hour or two. The climb becomes easier at this point as you enter the Path of Many Shrines."

"The path continues upward for another hour before reaching a large crevasse, over which a bridge is built. After crossing the bridge, you know you are nearly at the Two Brothers. There is a nearby cave that you can use to rest, if you wish, as well."

Better some protection than none!

Dagat prepares to skin the cat while the kill is fresh and the corpse loose, improvising with what tools she has.

Survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

She pauses from her activity when she hears the guides provide directions and approaches to listen.

Dagat understands Tien, being Tien herself (though from a different area).

"You know, it isn't the climb which bothers me, but the thought of that old bridge. Rickety, wind-tossed, fraying, missing...so many possible adjectives which could ruin our day." Apparently the dandy speaks Tien as well; surely Amara Li chose well with this group.

Once Gorn received the CLW from Berosius, he's full up. Thank you.

"Thank ye Berosius. And thank ye fer yer offer Noorzad, but Berosius took care of it fer the moment. Ah'm not so weak, that kitteh there was a little more nimble 'n ah expected, that's fer sure.

Looking around the buildings, Gorn will determine which is most easily defensible and look to the others to go in there.

"Out in the open, we be colder. We better get in the buildin', and then we'll all be warmer together. A fire outside will show other... things... someone is here. Ah'm not expectin' nice things."

He rubs the new scars from the kitty on his shoulder.

"Agreed, Zephri & Bethany can take second watch. Any takers on partners?"

Hyeon-ae translates the Tian guards as they explain the route to her for the benefit of the foreigners in the party. She does seem quite impressed that Noorzad apparently understands the language, though, and nods approvingly at him.

"非常感谢. 我相信我理解的途径," she says with a faint smile when Hai Xuan finishes his explanation. "你会留在我们今天晚上?这条路是毫无疑问的危险在晚上,它几乎是在日落..."

Tien:
"Thank you very much. I believe I understand the route."
"Would you stay with us this evening? The road is no doubt dangerous at night, and it's nearly sundown..."

The cavalier then spends some time staring at the crude map sketched on the ground, trying her best to impart it and the verbal directions to memory.

"I will take watch whenever the group deems it necessary," she adds to the discussion, although does not remove her serious gaze from the sketches in the dirt.

After a cold night spent in one of the shacks, the last one on watch wakes everyone and the group prepares for its ascent. The two guides watch as you move up the path, neither moving until you turn a bend and are out of sight.

Eventually, the mountain route takes you through a narrow valley. The valley ends in a high rock wall. A large crack, forty feet up the wall, looks large enough to allow an adult human through. Several small cracks and holes dot the entire surface of the rock wall. A rock overhang, ten feet above the gash, acts as a natural roof, sheltering the immediate area from the elements. There is a crack in the overhang that leads to a short chimney that disappears deeper into the rock.

Perception DC 15:
You spot the remains of multiple small mountain animals around the natural spring and the base of the wall.
