"I don't know. I'd be willing to bet that in a fire cave are fire critters that shoot fire lightning. We may need it for that. How long does a spell like that last. It would suck if it were to run out just as we get blasted by fire spit."

"Eh.. It's the same spell father Rashid was offering actually, it will last for 10 minutes if I divide it up amongst the five of us.. eh.." Bahram trails off as he stares at the gnoll. "But there are six of us now isn't there.."

"Hey Zaina, I meant to ask you about the priest, Zayfid. You said it was the name of one of the templars, Kardswaan's gang. Do you think there is a connection? Could he be a descendant of one of the monks perhaps?"

The Exchange

It takes a moment or two before Zaina manages to pull her gaze away from the (apparantly fascinating) smoking cave and back to Bahram...

'Hmmm?.. Oh yes... yes, my Master,' she blushes a little beneath her gossamer veil as she floats over to Bahram's eye-level and bows respectfully before him, 'Zayifid was Nefeshti's spy and diplomat - the west wind, upon which secrets thought to be hidden are carried - and was the second of the Templars to leave her service. The first was Vardishal...' she steals a quick sideways glance towards Yousef, '... but where the General left the Princess's service to devote himself to guarding this region, Zayifid's leaving was a bloody battle in which his fellow Templar, Pazhvann, was nearly killed. In the end, Zayifid was only out for himself, wanting personal power. Kardswann left the Princess after the General died, and wandered the land devoting himself to defending the innocent against those who would abuse them... until the events in Kelmarane left him in the state you found him in. As far as I'm aware, my Master, only Davashuum and Pazhvann remain by Princess Nefeshti's side. I've not heard any news of Zayifid for many, many, years, my Master - he could well be dead by now, as his complete abandonment of the Princess and the principles of the Templars will have eroded the wishcrafted immortality she granted her champions to nothing.'

For a moment Zaina's tiny brow furrows, as if in thought, then she shrugs, adding, 'I suppose it's possible that the name was given to this priest you met due to some reference to the Templars - maybe a tradition of his family or his particular religious order? I can't really say, my Master - that would just be pure speculation on my part.'

Bahram:
Your studies on the Templars confirm what Zaina tells you. Zayifid was said to have carried a delicate, but razor-sharp, scimitar... you recall that the priest you met did have a rather fine-looking scimitar on him, but in Katapesh that's hardly an unusual choice of sword...

Meanwhile Keldar peers into the cave entrance,

'I have some small experience with fire...' he understates, but then glances towards Purkor, '... although truth be told, I'd rather be hunting down The Witch and her Circle right now, if they're in the area and tracking...' he pauses for a moment, and seems to be grinding his teeth, but finally manages to spit out the words, '... our new "friend" here...'

"if this witch is after our new friend, they may be following us. If we lead them into these caves....". Yousef grunts, rubbing the scruff around his chin. "I know I can be quiet. Maybe we can trick the witch's goons into these caves two and into a confrontation with whatever beasties may be lurking. The resulting chaos may allow us to better penetrate this place."

Bahram ponders Yousef's proffered plan. "Might work actualy." he says with a shrug. "But have we seen any evidence that they even know we're here? Sure, one scout got away but how long to the camp? And then how long to muster? And how can we know who and how many are coming and if the witch will actualy rouse herself? Maybe we should just take the fight to her instead? Bet she wouldn't expect that."

"But then again Zayifid told us to start here, in this cave, so maybe we should just keep our course? Besides, I'm pretty excited about seeing if there's actualy any molten lava in there. It might just do the trick with the trinked our new-found friend offered us."

Rashid nods.

"Very well, we shall enter the cave. Before we do, however, you should all gather around. You too, Purkor..."

He then gestures for the Gnoll to come forward, along with the others, and holding their hands, invokes a prayer to the Everlight.

Communal Resist Energy(Fire), targeting Bahram, Lavender, Yousef, Haleen and Purkor - so 10 minutes of Fire Resistance 10, each. Make them count :-)

Resist Energy(Fire) on himself.

He then smiles at Bahram.

"I know you are excited at the prospect of lava; just promise me you will not go for a swim! More seriously, be careful: The last thing we need happening is you, or any of the rest of us, falling into molten rock..."

Bahram frowns at Rashid's suggestion of imersing himself in lava. "Ofcourse not. Not unless I knew the singular version of this spell wich would grant me a more powerful protection against a chosen element. Either that or complete immunity to fire, then I might concider risking a swim. I'm only proposing to dip this.." ..Bahram produces the molten lump of rock.. "..into the lava. Not myself."

Wisdom? Is that something you eat with a slice of bread?

Male Dwarf Separatist Cleric (Foundation of Faith) 7 (HP 59/59) (AC 26/12/25) (CMD 24) (Fort +10, Ref +5, Will +11) (Init +1) (Perception +18)

"Fair enough. Still, how do you propose to dip it into the lava without burning yourself? If it is indeed magical, Mage Hand will not work, and I dare say any mundane metal or wooden objects (that you could use to lower it) would be destroyed by contact with molten rock..."

Wisdom: Thinking things through ;-)

"Wha..? Why.. why wouldn't mage hand work? The stone weighs about a pound right? so as long as I keep my concentration it should be fine."

Male Dwarf Separatist Cleric (Foundation of Faith) 7 (HP 59/59) (AC 26/12/25) (CMD 24) (Fort +10, Ref +5, Will +11) (Init +1) (Perception +18)

"Because the spell only works on non-magical, unattended objects weighing up to 5 pounds; I remember it used to be a poor man's way to identify what items were magical... back in Katapesh, I knew a street performer who used it as the premise for a variant on the traditional 'shell game'..."

Quoting the PFSRD for the first part ;-)

"Oh, right.." Bahram mutters and bites his lip, pondering.

"Prestididgitation! If we place the rock over the lava and Lavander holds it in place with prestididgitation! That might work. I can cast a hostile levitation spell on it to reduce it's weight and besides..." Bahram puts the rock on the ground and points his finger at it, casting mage hand. When he continues his voice is strained with concentraition..."...the rock itself isn't magical, only the thing hidden inside it. This should work.." but then he falters and ceaces to concentrate and picks up the rock again. "..but what about when the rock is melted and the thing is free? Then what?"

Dang it!

Male Dwarf Separatist Cleric (Foundation of Faith) 7 (HP 59/59) (AC 26/12/25) (CMD 24) (Fort +10, Ref +5, Will +11) (Init +1) (Perception +18)

Rashid ponders for a moment, and then shrugs.

"Mage Hand should still not work on it if the rock is not magical, but the thing inside it is; that would be the equivalent of saying, sure, the sword is magical, but because it is in a non-magical scabbard, I can levitate it by levitating the scabbard... Moreover, Hostile Levitation specifically only works on creatures, not objects..."

He then smiles ruefully.

"As I said, it is a bit of a quandary."

Heh. I love the novelty of having a rules discussion in character ;-)

"Ah! I have it!" Bahram says, spreading his hands as his face lights up. "Chain of Perdition.." he says with a smug grin.

"A chain of force that can be used to entangle, trip, drag or repostiton foes. Not the most conventional use of the spell but that should do the trick."

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"I have something to stick in lava too, but let's worry about it when we get there. Didn't you just say we only have 10 minutes of fire protection? Besides, can you just summon a fire elemental to dip it in for you? Or can fire elementals not hold objects?"

Did Zaina get any fire protection? If not I say our new friend should be the one to be left out.

Male Dwarf Separatist Cleric (Foundation of Faith) 7 (HP 59/59) (AC 26/12/25) (CMD 24) (Fort +10, Ref +5, Will +11) (Init +1) (Perception +18)

Rashid frowns.

"I don't think any of us know how to summon elementals, although that is certainly something to work towards..."

To summon the least form of Fire elemental, you need Summon Monster IV.

He then nods to Bahram.

"Chain or Perdition should work, although the duration may be a problem - I imagine it will take a bit longer than half a minute to melt all of the rock away from your prize."

Zaina is a Zhyen (at least, as far as I am aware), and they already have resistance to all four elemental energy types.

"Hmm... I could actualy." Bahram replies to Lavander. "I can summon a small one with the second level of the spell, wich I have memorized, but we'd encounter the same problem as with the chain of perdition, namely the duration of the spell."

Elemental (small) is on the II list and, yes, Zaina is a Zhyen as far as I know too.

Male Dwarf Separatist Cleric (Foundation of Faith) 7 (HP 59/59) (AC 26/12/25) (CMD 24) (Fort +10, Ref +5, Will +11) (Init +1) (Perception +18)

Ah, I missed that - for some reason, I thought 'medium' was as small as they went...

The Exchange

Keldar nods after listening to Yousef's suggestion that the caves could make a good spot to ambush any of The Witch's minions who could be tracking Purkor,

'If their mining skills (or lack of the same) are anything to go by,' he notes, 'then they've little experience at tunnel fighting.'

Haleen smiles,

'An ambush, eh? Now, that's more my speed...'

Purkor seems a little nervous as Rashid casts his spell, but then (when it's obviously nothing harmful) grins his hyena grin,

'Purkor thanking great priestess!'

Assuming that the cave is entered...

The howling winds outside do little to cool the oppressive heat within the sweltering cavern, although the power of the Dawnflower as envoked by Rashid does help... Stepping past the fang-like outcroppings of rock which help give The Mountain's Maw its name, the cave within appears to form a crude circular passage, a little under ten feet across, which snakes deeper into the mountain. The sides of the passage are both smooth and warm to the touch, and have a flowing appearance a little like wax which has been melted and allowed to re-harden. Reeking trails of steam and acrid smoke eddy in eerie light.

Maybe twenty or so feet along the passage the origins of the light are revealed, as the path opens up into a larger chamber, around thirty to forty feet across. The eerie light is shed by flickering bluish flame that pops and whistles erratically from a crack in the cavern floor. Other natural-looking passages exit the chamber - one around ten feet wide slopes upwards to the north, with its opposite number sloping upwards to the south. Across the room from where the group enter, a narrower passage, no more than five feet across, slopes upwards to the east. In the middle of the chamber, backlit by the blue flame, a sturdy table made of ancient-looking wood supports a few woven baskets and a decrepit clay bowl.

Haleen silently draws her sword as she takes a cautious stance and peers around the chamber. Purkor does his best to cower at the back of the group. Keldar frowns,

'Strange,' he comments, 'this doesn't feel like a place of Torag... although one would expect it to...'

Zaina hovers by Bahram, her gaze flickering excitedly between the vents of steam, cracks seeping acrid smoke, and the weird blue flame,

'Glorious!' she murmurs softly...

Male Dwarf Separatist Cleric (Foundation of Faith) 7 (HP 59/59) (AC 26/12/25) (CMD 24) (Fort +10, Ref +5, Will +11) (Init +1) (Perception +18)

"Blue flame... is not generally normal; although I suppose there could be some sort of impurity in the rock here causing the color change. Keldar? Bahram? What do you think?"

Muttering a brief prayer to the Dawnflower, Rashid checks to see if it, or anything else in the room, is magical.[/ooc]

Casting Detect Magic.

He then draws his scimitar, and begins to quickly search the room...

"I don't rightly recall.." Bahram mutters as he steps into the room with Rashid and Yousef, casting mage armor on himself as he goes.

"It might have something to do with either illusion or transmutation, maybe it's a reaction to the air or a substance in the rocks... I'm not all that familiar with geomancy.."

Bahram also casts detect magic and scans the room.

"I heard from a traveller that some places get soo cold it actually burns," Lavender continues as she wipes sweat from her brow. "But I doubt gold has anything to do with anything in here, blue or not."

The Exchange

Keldar raises an eyebrow at the speculations of the others,

'It's just natural gas,' he observes, as he gestures casually towards the blue flame, 'it's not common, but it happens...'

Yousef:
The northern passage rises up what appear to be a series of gravel-strewn natural steps, with the same flowing appearance as the rest of the rock in the caves, turning towards the east as they rise out of sight. Flickering orange light and a dancing play of shadows suggests more flames, like Keldar's "natural gas" (apart from the colour) somewhere just round the bend...

... but you note that some of the shadowy figures appear to be more than just tricks of the light as you pick out the silhouettes of at least two figures, which look to be armed with long spears...

Rashid:
Apart from the magical auras your group brought in with them, you note a faint mystic aura which, with a few moments more concentration, you trace to something inside one of the baskets on the table...

Apart from that, you spot a bronze-hued glint of polished metal from a crack in the floor near the blue flame...

Bahram:
Apart from the magical auras your group brought in with them, you note a faint mystic aura which, with a few moments more concentration, you trace to something inside one of the baskets on the table... The aura suggests to you a wand designed to summon fairly minor creatures... A wand of summon monster II with 17 charges left, to be exact

As the group fan out across the chamber, a small humanoid creature, maybe two or so feet tall, emerges from one of the hissing vents of steam dotted around the place, yawning, stretching, and rubbing at his eyes. The creature has thin, leathery, wings tipped with clawed hands, long pointed ears and a nose to match, a short pointed tail, and a mischievous smile. His grey skin is partially obscured under what appears to be a constant stream of steam rising from his gremlin-like body. Blinking, he glances around the group then, with a brief few flaps or his wings, he hops up onto the table, traling a little steam as he does so,

'I an Andgronakraks,' he announces with exaggerated grandeur as he puffs out his chest, 'seneschal to my Mistress, Commander Thratnias, and the legions under her command. Who are you, and what do you think you're doing here? More-so, what offerings have you brought my Mistress... and me...' he finishes with an imperious, swirling, gesture of his winged arm, which trails steam as it passes through the air.

Bahram:
You note that 'Andgronakraks' is standing right next to the basket holding the wand... Also, when Andgronakraks appears and begins his speech, you note that Zaina's eyes widen and she quickly zips behind you, whispering, 'Oh no! Of all the... Don't let him see me, my Master! Please!'

Knowledge (planes) DC 13:
You recognise Andgronakraks as a 'mephit' - an elemental creature usually found as a servant to the more powerful denizens of the elemental planes. This one appears to be a 'steam mephit', a native of the Elemental Plane of Fire, able to breath scalding steam, call down boiling rain, and obscure himself in steam. Like most natives of the Plane of Fire he should be immune to flames, but particularly vulnerable to cold.

Prof:
Bahram puts a hand behind his back, offering Zaina a billowing sleeve to crawl into and then he puts his hands into his sleeves .

Bahram folds his hands inside the billowing sleeves of his robes and gives a slight bow to the creature, inclining his head though not taking his eyes off him.

"Greeting mephit. One should not be surprised to find a denizen of the elemental plane of fire in this place but your presence suggests a powerful master. We are the faris asim of Kelmarane, we are here because we were told this would be the place to start investigating the increase in gnoll activity in this area. Perhaps we should be talking to your mistress?"

Lavender gives a courteous bow when Bahram introduces the group, and waits for the mephit to answer.

Rashid stays silent, reasoning that Bahram has things well in hand, and being wise enough to know that one should not openly commit all of ones resources against an unknown force.

I just hope that he can handle it.

The Exchange

Bahram:
Zaina gladly accepts the refuge you offer, quickly flitting up your sleeve and out of sight...

'Knight protectors, eh?,' Andgronakraks smiles in response to Bahram's good mannered introduction, 'a grand enough title in its way, I suppose... and you're certainly better versed in etiquette than the usual travellers who come to pay homage here,' he shoots a quick glance towards where Purkor is cowering at the back of the group, 'not to mention the gnolls who occassionally slope this way... no manners at all those ones...' a thoughtful expression passes across the mephit's pointed features for a moment, then his smile fades a little, replaced by what appears to be a well-practiced expression of haughty professionalism, '... but my Mistress relaxes with her paramour at this time. To disturb her for any less than the most important visitors would be unconscionable. I assume you have requests to make and offerings to present? Precious metals or gemstones perhaps? I'll see those first... to better aid in judging just how important you really are... you understand?' a sly smile returns to Andgronakraks' face as he raises one eyebrow and glances around the group expectantly...

Bahram eyes the mephit for a moment, reaching a hand up to finger his Guides' Token' before raising a finger, muttering 'a moment please' to the mephit and turning to the group to converse.

"How do you want to handle this? We'd need to present him with something reaching 2,000 gold pieces in value judging by what's already in the offering jars. What was it Zayifid said exactly? Anyone remember?"

Going post hunting to find what the priest said exactly, I'm feeling a little stingy a.t.m. so I'm wondering if we should just blast the mephit back to the elemental plane of fire and see if his mistress wants to follow.

"He said nothing about this place - I remembered that there was a legend about a demon-haunted cave here, called 'The Mountain's Maw' and we decided that it might provide an alternative entrance to 'The House of the Beast."

I am all for going to town on this place. By definition, creatures of pure chaos and evil cannot be redeemed ;-)

Weeeell... technically it's neither chaotic nor evil...

Sure, but its mistress probably is ;-) Also, Rashid has no idea what its alignment is - he just knows that there are demons in this cave...

"Pay homage? Sounds like arrogant genie bullshit." Yousef says to Rashid and Bahram. "Rashid. do you haveone of those augur spells you could ask The Dawnflower if we are in the right place? By the way, we have armed somethings up this way," he indicates the cave he is next to.

The Exchange

Just to let you know - I'm giving you guys time to discuss stuff and post what you're all doing, I've not vanished again! I'm kinda' assuming everyone's pretty busy over the holidays anyway? :)

Andgronakraks rolls his eyes a little and sighs, folding his arms across his chest and tapping his foot... but for all that pantomime, still seems content to await the conclusion of the visitors' discussions...

Ok, went back to look at what Zayifid said and he didn't say anything about these caves, just that we needed to 'bring low the Carrion King' before the gnolls muster under one banner. So I guess we're here to what? Get some sort of weapon(s)? Information? Sightseeing? Find a nice pool of lava to dip Lavenders wand into? ;P I dunno.

Turning his back to the mephit Bahram brings his sleeves up to his face as conspicuously as he can and whispers into them. "So, who is this guy? Do you know who his mistress is? Is she allied with the gnolls you think?"

Male Dwarf Separatist Cleric (Foundation of Faith) 7 (HP 59/59) (AC 26/12/25) (CMD 24) (Fort +10, Ref +5, Will +11) (Init +1) (Perception +18)

I concur; it was Rashid, making a Knowledge(Local) roll, who knew about the cave.

Rashid shrugs, and whispers a reply.

"I doubt the Gnolls would tolerate anyone this close to their stronghold, who they did not at least have a truce with... and truces are not something that Gnolls are exactly known for..."

The Exchange

From up Bahram's sleeve, the concealed Zaina whispers in reply,

'Andgronakraks? He's an old boyfrie... um... I mean, he was a scout in Jhavhul's army back when Princess Nefeshti battled them, my Master. I... encountered... him a few times back then. His Mistress was Thratnias, a lesser commander of the salamanders in Jhavhul's service... although as far as I know they were more akin to mercenaries than fellow worshippers of the Rough Beast or fanatics loyal to Jhavhul.'

I bet 10 gold when we get back that when we meet her, she is going to bat eyelashes at Bahram, declare me an enemy, and then one of us is going to do something stupid or violent and make all this moot." Lavender whispers back. "There are armed somethings? great...

Lavender looks over to the Mephit.

"Stop your begging and retrieve your mistress. If she is half as important as you claim she is, she can give us 20 minutes out of her 'relaxation' time to see us. She can discuss tribute with us in person if she feels she is so inclined."

Bahram cringes a little at Lavender's assessment of the groups method of operations and their likely hood of diplomatic success but nevertheless says nothing and looks at the mephit. Lavender was probably right.

The Exchange

Andgronakraks sneers at Lavender's own imperious attitude, the steam issuing from his body momentarily thickening in response to his obvious displeasure...

'Begging is it?', he shakes his head and waves a dismissive hand towards the group as a whole, 'Fine. If you're incapable of holding a civilised negotiation, then you can be on your way. My Mistress certainly has no interest in paupers who can't even produce a few measly coins or gems when requested...'

Rashid watches with interest to see how the mephit reacts to Lavender's words, fully expecting the fiery little creature to be goaded into making a rash attack...

The Exchange

The mephit regards Lavender with a haughty and annoyed expression for a few moments... but can't seem to prevent an eager smile spreading across his steaming lips...

'Twenty coins of gold would go a long way to proving your civility,' he replies, spreading his arms wide, then adds with a shrug, 'or gemstones of equal value... they all taste good!'

"Fine, fine!" Bahram says eagerly, stepping in before Lavender can rile the mephit further. Fishing in his pouch he provides the requested twenty gold coins and dumps them into an offering bowl.

Stepping back he stares haughtily away from the gold and the mephit only to frown and the mephit and wave his hand at him, a picture of haughty impatience. "Well? Go on then, hurry up!"
