Rashid smiles at Lavender.

"That has indeed been the rather worrying trend that we have encountered so far, but there is only one way to find out for certain!"

He then heads in the direction of the camp...

Bahram sighs and follows after Rashid. "Just try not to provoce them. These barbarians think they know everything there is to know, let's see if they know somthing about the ruins at least."

The Exchange

Yousef:
While you've certainly heard of badawi travellers and traders in these parts (in fact, until Kelmarane is up and running again, they're probably the only human traders in these parts) you haven't heard of them using these ruins as an outpost... Still, it's possible, you suppose...

Heading through the opening in the outer wall you emerge in front of the temple entrance. Before you have much chance to observe the camp within, you can't help but notice a massive leopard - fully the size of a tiger - watching you from the eastern corner of the temple (to the right as you face the temple). Snarling at your group, the big cat quickly turns and bounds off into the surrounding mountains...

Knowledge (nature) DC 14:
Easily twice the size of common leopards, Katapeshi leopards are infamous for their savagery. Now extremely rare, these massive creatures once ranged from Nex to Thuvia... but you didn't know that any survived here in the Brazen Peaks...

A step through the temple's arched entrance confirms your suspicions that there's some sort of camp set up just within. The temple's entrance chamber is maybe forty-five feet wide (east to west), and twenty feet deep (north to south). The walls seem mostly intact, but the ceiling is long gone, the three supporting pillars either side of the chamber (six in total) now ending in uneven jagged breaks as they support nothing but open air. Directly north of where you entered (which is in the centre of the chamber's south wall) another five-foot wide arched passage leads on for maybe ten feet before opening into the next room...

... However, the entrance chamber itself contains several colourful silk tents, a central campfire, and cages of all sizes, containing a bewildering variety of wildlife. In one cage skitters a massive desert scorpion, a full sixteen feet long. In another coils a snake maybe twice as long again. Smaller cages contain other varieties of scorpions, snakes, spiders, hawks, baboons, and a whole host of local animal life, all adding to the sounds (and smells) of the camp. In one large cage, a little to the right of the central campfire, there's a very strange creature - with the upper torso of a comely woman with cat's eyes and sharp fangs, and the lower body of a lioness. There doesn't seem to be any people in the camp though...

Knowledge (nature) DC 16:
You recognise the woman/lioness creature as a lamia - hate filled and cruel hunters, said to be able to drain a man's will with their touch so as to better beguile him...

As you enter, the tauric woman/lioness lazily looks up through the bars of her cage. Clad only in ragged strips of thin linen around her bosom and forearms, as well as a belt of gold discs aroud her (human) waist there's something strangely sensual about the creature as her lower lioness body gets up onto all fours and stretches, and her upper human torso stretches in unison, arching her back as her arms reach above her. Brushing her long, night-black, hair out of her face, you see that she's wearing kohl around her feline eyes, as well as gold hoop earrings, and that her fingernails are long, pointed, and painted. Looking towards your group with an expression of practiced mild disinterest she speaks in Kelish, a feline purr to her accent,

'If you've come to purrrchase me... or one of the otherrr beasts... then you'rrre out of luck - our captorrrs have been gone forrr some time, and I have no idea when... orrr if... they'll rrreturrrn...' she shrugs, tosses her hair, then sighs, '... I suppose if you want to brrrowse I can't stop you... although I assurrre you, I'm the most interrresting thing herrre...'

Lavender thinks for a moment on Keldar's words, walking around the cage looking at it and the lamia. she then asks the lamia; "What are these "tricks" my dwarven friend is talking about? If we were to "purchase" you, what would stop you from using these tricks on us? What price are your captors asking for you? I can't imagine you like being stuck in that tiny cage..." Lavender then says something in a strange language...

Auran:
"Bahram, whomever these people are, they are no better than those gnolls. I don't know much about this lamia, or if it is dangerous to let it free... But I don't like seeing people...er, intelligent creatures enslaved. If I let it out, would I be endangering everyone?"

Lavender scrutinizes the cage. How is it locked, and is there magic involved? (Using detect magic) Also, lavender looks to see if there are any mundane traps on the cage as well.

Rashid raises an eyebrow at what Keldar has to say about the 'Lamia', but refrains from commenting. Instead, he addresses her respectfully.

"What manner of creatures were/are your captors? Exactly how long ago did they disappear? Where did they go?"

Bahram steps around the cage admireing the crature despite himself, looking to Lavender he answers her in the far-away sounding airy tounge she used.

Auran:

"Frankly I don't know anything about this creature but if Keldar says not to trust her; I'm going to not trust her. Besides, I'm pretty fed up with predators trying to entice me so I say let her rot."

"Humpgh. I'm not much for sentimentality, but if the captors are gone, we should let out the creatures. Better for them to have a chance at survival or death, than to rot in a cage."

Yousef starts unlocking cages of the animals that seems least harmless. i.e. nothing that contains giant scorpions and snakes. But small snakes, hawks, baboons, and other fauna.

'Haven't you hearrrd the tales? My kind have many tricks, to steal men's will and enchant them with our wiles... of course we have, we'rrre all female... so we must be evil, isn't that what they say?'

The lamia watches Yousef as he starts to pull out the simple pegs securing some of the smaller cages, releashing the creatures within...

'Why not come over herrre and rrrelease me, if you'rrre in such a generrrous mood?' she asks, languorously running her hands up the sides of her shapely humanoid torso to cup her breasts as she pouts at the half-orc, 'I'm surrre I'll rrrewarrrd you morrre handsomely than the rrrest of these crrreaturrres...'

Lavender:
Incanting arcane words and tracing mystic sigils in the air, you begin to feel the presence of magic... there's two faint but distinct auras (apart from the magic items you all carry)... one comes from Bahram, so is likely to be his recently cast spell of protection, the other... seems to be all around you...

With no Knowledge (arcana) ranks you only get limited information, but in this case (and with a quick DM made save on your character's behalf) it proves enough to discover...

... Suddenly it dawns on you, the faint magical aura is coming from the camp itself - the tents, and cages, and creatures! As you come to this realisation they all appear to fade to translucence - a telltale sign of an illusion at work. Even the cages Yousef is opening... or thinks he's opening... the creatures inside them... even the pegs he's pulling out... are all just one elaborate illusion. In fact, the only real thing, apart from you and your friends, in the whole chamber is the lamia herself... her 'cage', just like the rest of the camp, nothing but a mystical figment...

As Lavender scrutinizes the cage she stops and then looks around the camp.

"Maybe your right! Everything here is an illusion, except for the Lamia! She is not trapped! Be on guard!"

Lavender moves between Yousef and the Lamia as she is attempting to seduce him.

"Ms. Shakilah, I am most impressed by this... illusion!" Lavender says, gesturing in a wide area around her. "Such a large area, real looking cages, and such believable animals is quite a feat! The word "trick" does not do it justice! I dare say that you are a master of illusion! I must say however, we are not a group of people whom you want to trick or try to take advantage of. Despite how we may appear, we are a very powerful group of warriors and mages. We do not want to cause any trouble for you and we wish no trouble in return. I understand it is your nature to do such things, but if you continue to try to deceive us or worse, I can guarantee that you will soon be wishing you hadn't. I don't know if word of it has made it up here, but we are the group of people who cleaned out the entire gnoll tribe in the ruined city to the south, along with their insane genie leader in a single night! Not to mention the evil daemon we destroyed below the city. Believe me, It is not worth it." Lavender says, trying to make the Lamia see reason.

Lavender tries to be 5ft away from the lamia when she calls her out on her ruse. If the lamia tries anything threatening, like trying to strike at her or her friends, Lavender will cast colorspray, hoping it is enough to stun her for a moment, and buy the party a moment to prepare for a fight. Lavender is trying to be diplomatic, but she is kinda threatening the lamia, so I'm not sure if this should be diplomacy, intimidate, or well, both. If it is both, feel free to roll the intimidate check, otherwise it is the same bonus as diplomacy so it can be either or.

Once Lavender has said her piece, and the dwarves start to pass through cages, the lamia frowns for a moment... then smiles...

... The camp disolves to nothing, the freshly removed peg in Yousef's hand fading away along with the cage he took it from and the creature inside. Within a few seconds it's as if the tents, cages, beasts and even the campfire have blown away like so much sand on the breeze, along with their sounds, and smells, and even warmth - leaving the temple's entrance chamber empty, apart from your group... and Shakilah.

'Cleverrr little sisterrr...' purrs the lamia as she directs her smile towards Lavender. Padding softly one way, then back the other, Shakilah begins to pace back and forth, her lionine tail swishing behind her as she does. Snorting with derision at Rashid she near spits as she says, 'Prrriest...' then looks over the rest of your group, 'the otherrr stunted one must be one of your "warrriorrrs", yes? And the grrrotesque too?' she nods towards Yousef, 'Which leaves my dearrr little sisterrr and herrr handsome frrriend as yourrr "mages"?' she appears to be refering to Lavender and Bahram. Holding up a hand to forestall action she adds, '... wait... I'm considerrring my options...'

She doesn't seem intimidated in the least... and more impressed that Lavender saw through her ruse than actually convinced by her words...

Bahram:
Apart from your own spell of mage armour and the various magical items you all carry you detect no further magic in the chamber - the lingering aura of Shakilah's illusion fading fast once she's dropped it. On the other hand, the temple further in seems to have just the barest hints of dim magic fading in and out every now and then - like the last embers of long forgotten spells sputtering as they slowly lose the battle to stay active after centuries...

Hissing, even as she recoils slightly from the blast, the lamia snarls a growl at the sorcerer...

But Lavender moves almost as one with Bahram, backing away from Shakilah, even as she weaves arcane gestures and words of her own and unleashes a spray of clashing colours which washes over the lamia... to no apparant effect. Shakilah spares Lavender a disdainful sneer,

'Please... little sisterrr, you can do betterrr...'

Drawing his scimitar as he hurries to Yousef's side, Rashid places a hand on the half-orc's shoulder as he calls forth the protective power of the Dawnflower...

Yousef himself, meanwhile, tries to lull the lamia into a false sense of security... but she simply smiles and shakes her head,

'Amateurrrs...' she purrs...

... even as Yousef draws Tempest...

Move action to Feint (for Yousef anyway), and Move action to draw a weapon - which can be combined with a regular move, but not any other Move-equivalent actions, so Yousef can't also attack this round. Besides, I was working on the assumption that (after Keldar's earlier warning about her touch) no-one was actually standing within a five-foot step of the lamia when Bahram kicked off...

Still smiling, Shakilah bounds... backwards, ducking behind the centre of the three wide pillars on that side of the chamber (facing their matching three on the opposite side of the chamber) even as her laughter echoes through the ruins...

'So, we shall play!' the lamia calls out, 'Cat and mouse... I am obviously the cat, so will you squeak forrr me my little mice?'

His form melting and shifting, even as he moves forwards, Keldar drops to all fours and he shapechanges into the form of a mountain lion. Bounding round the pillar, after Shakilah, he comes muzzle-to-face with not one... but five lamias - all appearing identical, and each now holding a wicked-looking jagged and curved dagger. The five Shakilah's all seem to move as one as they tilt their heads to one side and speak in unison,

'If I'd known you could do that we could have had sooo much fun togetherrr...'

Stepping to the side until he can see round the pillar, Bahram conjures up a cloud of glittering, blinding, particles... which explode across a good third of the chamber! Luckily, a quick DM rolled save for Keldar indicates he resists the blinding effect (as does the lamia, I'm afraid) and the others are outside the 10ft radius spread).

Heading next to Bahram, Lavender takes her turn - with a sound of sloshing oil all five of the (gold-dust-coated) lamias curse as their identical (gold-dust-coated) daggers slip from their hands to clatter across the (gold-dust-coated) floor... although only a single (gold-dust-coated) dagger comes to rest there...

You feel a surge of confidence pass through you, as if you're now unstoppable!

BTW - Heroism only provides it's +2 bonus to attack rolls, saves, and skill checks, not damage rolls.

Moving around the opposite side of the pillar to (gold-dust-coated) lion-Keldar and Rashid, Yousef takes a swing with Tempest... but the five (gold-dust-coated) Shakilahs lithly duck and Yousef instead takes a slice out of the (gold-dust-coated) pillar...

Roaring, Shakilah rears up, taking a brief moment to examine the gold dusting across her skin,

'Prrretty...' she comments, with a grin... then lands both her fore-claws on (gold-dust-coated) lion-Keldar, ripping into his flesh even as she reaches out to lay her human hand on him as well... Keldar takes 9 Hit Points of damage, and 1 point of Wisdon drain...

Keldar:
At the lamia's touch, you feel your senses becoming duller, and everything becoming just a little harder to process...

Attempting to return Shakilah's attack in kind, (gold-dust-coated) lion-Keldar bites and claws at her... his bite and one claw both strike (or nearly strike) one of the images of Shakilah, causing them to blow away like desert sand as they're dispelled... But his second claw strikes home, raking four parallel bloody rents across the fore-shoulder of the lamia's lion body. Shakilah hisses with pain and anger...

Next round! Oh, and would it be possible for people to post stuff like the save DCs of their spells when they cast, and their current AC - it would save me a lot of time going back and forth between writing the post and checking character sheets...

Invoking the divine guidance of Sarenrae, Rashid casts Bless.

The Exchange

Invoking three more magical bolts of force Bahram lets them fly towards the three remaining lamias... as they approach it appears as though the glowing bolts each split again into three as all three of the lamias are stuck by three matching bolts each! All three Shakilah's roar with pain and anger, glaring (and cursing and spitting) at Bahram... Spells which don't require attack rolls don't effect (and aren't effected by) the mirror images.

Hurling one of her lightning lances at the same time Bahram's force missiles fly, Lavender's crackling blue-white blast passes right through one of the lamias, causing it to be swept away like dust...

As Rashid calls upon the blessings of the Dawnflower, a wave of courage seems to flow through you all, bolstering your resolve... That's a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and saves Vs fear; it doesn't stack with the morale bonus Keldar's already getting from Heroism though.

Swinging again, Yousef once more finds Tempest's frosty blade missing both the remaining Shakilah's. In unison they laugh as they glance at him,

'It looks like I'm safe to leave you until last...' she purrs...

True to her word, the lamia continues her assault on lion-Keldar, her (now blood-flecked gold) claws raking at him even as she once more lays a touch with her human hand on his fur... Keldar takes another 3 Wisdom drain, and a mere 6 Hit Points damage.

Snapping back at the lamia, lion-Keldar's jaws close on... the last of the figments, causing it to disperse to nothingness like the others. With the true Shakilah finally revealed the shapeshifted dwarf presses his assault... but the lamia proves too elusive a target as she lithly moves this way and that, laughing as she does so,

'What fun!' she declares, casting a glance towards Lavender, 'You brrring me the most wonderrrful pets, little sisterrr!'

Next round please!

With a whispered prayer to the Dawnflower, Rashid steps forward, and takes a swipe at the lamia with his trusty scimitar...

MW Consecrated Scimitar: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 1 = 21, for 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 Slashing damage.

Add an extra +2 to that if I can get a flank...

I forgot to add the +1 Bless bonus, so my 'to hit' roll should be a 23.
