Just keeping the thread out of the archives ;)

great-long-tiring. sadly killed 2 of my normal groups pc's. overwhelming in all the new characters. with local gruop you get to know there characters, but when people show up with 7th level summoners it can be a pain. now onto killing gnolls!

m dwarven page 18 druid 5th

Internet down. Hopfully fixed tomorrow

Qadira

Thanks for letting us know - hope everything gets fixed soon!

Qadira

Okay... seems the site won't let me post in the game thread right now...

Trying to post:

Climbing the stairs Yousef pushes open the trapdoor and sneaks onto the manor's flat roof...

Yousef:
The roof appears empty, apart from some light scattered debris here and there, although it does offer a fine vantage from which to view the lower town, and the buildings across the river. The higher parts of the town, up the hill, are too high up for you to see anything of them, the hill rising higher than the manor's roof behind the building. With a good jump and some skill at climbing it may be possible to get from the manor's roof to the higher roadside... but it wouldn't be easy to do so.

I know. I find myself uncomfortable with playing an evil character, which is what I envisioned Yousef in the beginning.

thats cool- Keldar still sees the world as a hard place that must be faced in a hard, gruff way. lead by example and we shall see where it leads

Next week my wife and I are finally heading out for our honeymoon, about three years in the waiting. After Sunday I won't be able to post until at least next Saturday.

Qadira

Congrats! Have a good one... I'll try not to kill Yousef off in the meantime... ;)

I hope that it goes well :-)

(The honeymoon, that is, not the Yousef-icide ;-) )

Quote:
Can I get a ruling, please? Rashid made the DC to realise what Lavender cast, so I think that it would be reasonable for him to be able to see through the illusion...

You need to be able to clearly see a spell being cast to identify it with Spellcraft, and normal Perception penalties apply. A 1st level spell has a base DC 16 to identify with Spellcraft. Rashid is 40ft away from Lavender when she casts (+4 DC = 19), in distracted 'cos he's in combat (+5 DC = 24), and isn't even looking at Lavender (so, at least a +2 DC for unfavourable conditions). DC = 26.

I think Lavender mostly put up the Spellcraft DC for those guys next to her, who she whispered to.

A Will save Vs the Silent Image would be a DC 15, but requires interacting with or studying the wall to even get a roll. Proof (such as falling through the thing) means no save needed - you automatically disbelieve, whilst someone just telling you it's an illusion gives you a save with a +4 bonus.

So Rashid wasn't really in a position to make the Spellcraft roll in the first place, and if he had then he'd still need a Will save (with the +4 bonus) to actively get the 'disbelief' effect of being able to see through it as if it's translucent.

I didn't think it was really worth retconning Rashid's reaction in-game based on all this, so didn't bother to mention it, but since you asked... ;)

So basically, no, Rashid can't see through it at the moment. Lavender can, but the others either have no reason to try the save right now, or haven't got enough range on their vision to be able to see that far anyway, so it's mostly a moot point.

Not making the Spellcraft roll and not having a chance to save yet doesn't, however, stop the characters suspecting whatever they want to suspect... just as they'd be free to suspect any wall which mysteriously and silently rose from the ground as a possible illusion - they live in a world of such things, so it's not metagaming to have such reasonable suspicions... you just don't get the mechanical benefits of disbelief until you've made the effort to interact with or study the thing closely (the bonus from someone else telling you, or making the Spellcraft roll to identify the spell as it's cast, being based on the idea that you then know exactly where to look to try to see the inconsistencies and the like in the image which allow your brain to shift into the 'translucent outline' disbelief mode).

Hope that all makes sense?

And Sigz - take it easy, and get well soon: nothing's more important than your health!

Qadira

Just to clarify...

... The gatehouse 'gate' is heavy bronze-bound wooden double doors, a little like this - 10ft wide and 15ft tall at the top of the arch. They're too thick to lever open with a crowbar, especially since they're barred on the other side, and the hinges aren't visible on the side the PCs are on (i.e. the side they're designed to defend against). There's also no gap to climb over. Rashid's grapple hooked the battlements on top of the actual wall... which is a 30ft high climb, not a 15ft high one.

Hope that all makes some sort of sense...

hp 35 | AC 12 | T 12 | FF 10 | CMD 12 | F +2 | R +3 | W +3 | Init +8 | Per +8 || LL 8 || Sp ~/8/2 ||| SpC 8min

No problem, the only reason that Lavender tried to open the gate was in the hope that maybe it was not barred yet, or that the bar was damaged or missing (it is a ruined city, and I think I remember it being ajar before the hyena attack, but I could be wrong). She really didn't have any other action to try that round anyway. If Rashid hadn't pulled the grappling hook out, she would have probably been looking to retreat next.

m dwarven page 18 druid 5th

looking at the map, it looks like the other tower is part of the cliff on the left. If this is so, how steep is cliff? how high is cliff? thinking can go up and around,

It looks like you can go around to the east of the gatehouse, in between it and the Battlemarket, but I bet that really isn't the case.

Qadira

This is one of the (several) issues with this map... the line indicating the 'cliff' drops between levels of the hill is really faint because of the way they've (artistically) shaded parts of it. It's darker behind B8, but it continues up and round (east and north on the map), following the edge of the path, until you hit the gatehouse. It's really very confusing, and I had to read and re-read all the various descriptions (both in this and the later books) to figure it out.

Essentially it means there's an almost vertical drop there, which the western / inner tower (the one connected to the pillar and trumpeting statue) rises out of. It'd be a lesser climb to get up the cliff bit than the actual tower (maybe 15 or so feet instead of the 30 needed to scale the tower), but then there's about 210ft to cover rounding the tower and the pillar and getting to the 'back' of the gate. It's by no means impossible. Also keep in mind that the battle market itself has an entrance on each of the compass points, so you'd be skirting pretty close to the enemy stronghold going that way... but it could well be worth the risk...

Yes... Kardswann apparantly went to the Shatner school of melodrama! ;)

Is there a rule somewhere that a sorcerer can use higher level spell slots to cast lower level spells? I cannot find it if there is, and It might just be an old house rule that my rl group uses.

hmm.. good question.

Spell Slots: The various character class tables show how many spells of each level a character can cast per day. These openings for daily spells are called spell slots. A spellcaster always has the option to fill a higher-level spell slot with a lower-level spell. A spellcaster who lacks a high enough ability score to cast spells that would otherwise be his due still gets the slots but must fill them with spells of lower levels.

This is in referance to all arcane spell castting classes, in the magic chapter, right before they discuss preparing wizard spells.

I think it is safe to say that that Gnoll is well and truly intimidated by Lavender ;-)

I, too, am really enjoying how the party works together :-)
