Here's a little discussion thread for the planescape project.

"Welcome to the Cage, berk", they told me. "Clueless" they called me. Little did they know that I was no stranger to the Chant!

The sky over Avernus, they say, never changes. Stinking, torrid Avernus: look up and the sky never changes. No day, no night, just a dark red, starless expanse. The rock that lie jumbled about seem to have come from nowhere, haphazardly strewn all the way to the horizon. Balls of fire fall from the sky, breaking the constant passage of time and the screams - ever present - the screams of petitioners.

Journal of the wizard Sparado

---

Hey Ranph, did you hear about Fannie and Jeya?

Four adventurers brought together - circumstance or fate - in an inn just a few hours away from Korvosa, Varisia, overhearing a conversation.

Them and Cari went out to that old wizard's place, you know...

- ..the one that everybody says is haunted? Ranph responds

Exactly. I heard they must've tripped something, because they heard a bit roaring outta this hidden back room. It seems Cari disappeared, and Jeya and Fannie legged it.

- Who wouldn't in their place. Ranph says.

They're hiding now, afraid someone is coming to get them.

Very old habits die hard, and Arianna's dislike of parting with her typically very limited supply of coin has prompted her to try to trade a bit of bardic work for the party's room and board at the inn.

Aria is in front of a crowd, most of the way through singing a poetic rendition of a duel between a paladin and a demon at the Worldwound. As she sings, she dances back and forth past the crowd, swinging a sheathed and peacebonded rapier with her left hand as she acts out the paladin's swings and parries.

Perform (Dance): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Perform (Sing): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

Oh lovely Arianna, how strong is life in you. I am contend with sitting here and observing.

Yasmin sits with an open notebook in front of her, scribbling something in it once and a while. On the left page a drawing of the performing Arianna has been drawn with the onlooking crowd behind her. On the right page she has written notes.

Gozreh, save me.

He knew he was in over his head as soon as the storm started picking up. Days earlier, the pirate captain had gotten word that a trade vessel with riches enough to retire him for a few months, was moving from one port to another. The crew had been anxious since their last job, only getting a fraction of what they were seeking which caused disgruntled whispers to pass from one to the other until it reached the captain’s ears. He was familiar with the route, a course that would take him around the southern edge of a harmless continent, up through a large tributary that would inevitably lead to a large estate built on the edge of a pale blue lake.

Nobody could have seen it coming. Before the lad in the crow’s nest could call out, the side of the ship was hit by a powerful wave. A few weaker members of the crew, fresh men without their sea legs, went overboard and were never seen again from the black depths of the ocean. The vessel rocked and all eyes on deck looked up to see a hundred foot tall wave towering over the mast before coming down and crushing the entire boat under the weight of the water.

The impact knocked the captain’s senses and the next thing he felt was his body slowly falling through the water, debris trickling down next to him with the bodies of his entire crew littering the wreckage. He had no breath and could feel the cold chill of the water entering his lungs as he fought to scream out for help. The lack of oxygen made his body twist and jolt as his mind kept pushing for him to scream for something, anything. He forced the last few bubbles out of his lungs in a futile effort to get help, as he felt his body being pulled downwards like a whirlpool had formed under him…

”HELP! HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL…..” He regained his composure, immediately ceasing his yelling as he looked around, floating in mid-air, confused as to what was going on. I must be dead. He thought to himself as he took in his surroundings. The Astral Plane resembled much of what he thought death would be like, infinite, empty, quiet… But soon the quiet was interrupted by a group of tribal-looking creatures who gradually came into view and approached him. Immediately thinking they were enemies or apparitions who have arrived to steal his soul, he brandished his sword, only to watch it crumble like dust and disappear into the winds of the Astral Plane. The humanoids surrounded him and offered him help, which he took no hesitation in receiving since he was defenseless and lost in this new world.

Days, months, years, he couldn’t tell how long time passed with these people. He learned partially how to speak with them using sign language he learned from a deaf crew member, but their complex ideas, he could not decipher. They told him that he was “gifted” and that he had the ability to enter their world and leave at will, but only when he learned how to. He was quick, but not a genius, and he lost track of time as he attempted to learn their ways. Whatever brought him to their world also made him stronger. The strange people took him in and helped him learn his new abilities, teaching him how to use his new innate magic, as well as how to defend himself with a sword, even in the Astral Plane. He never learned where he was or who these people were, but they would always be an ally to him and he could never forget the

As abruptly and chaotically as he arrived, he disappeared. One day while attending to his regular routines, he felt himself being pulled downward into the ground, like a whirlpool was forming again. He panicked and cried out but the ones nearby just watched and waved, the last signs he saw them signing to him were “Journey” and “Enlightenment”.

Consciousness went away and moments later, he opened his eyes while laying on his back in the middle of a field of flowers. Armed with his magic and his weapon, he got up and made the long journey to the nearest settlement. He asked around town for directions to get to his birthplace, his home, or even a town that he would be familiar with, but nobody had ever heard of such places. He walked around some more and began to see strange creatures, races he had never been introduced to; Tengu, Kitsune, Half-Orcs.

Still unsure of how he was transported between worlds, and even more unsure of what has happened to him that brought about all these changes, he went to the one place he knew he could put his mind at ease, the nearest tavern.

The young 30 year old sailor had little to no aging from his countless years in the Astral Plane. He preferred to keep his shirt off, a sign that he was a man of the sea, and wore baggy pants that had many trinkets dangling from his hip with even more little treasures stuffed into his pockets. At his hip, he wore his signature sawtooth blade, sharpened to resemble the teeth of sharks along one side. The stranger walked up to the bar and ordered a drink, but as the barkeep slammed the mug down on the table, he realized his currency was far different from that of this world’s. He gave a short apology and stumbled off to sulk at a table, overhearing a nearby conversation as his eyes wandered to watch the demon-looking girl dance and sing about events he has no idea of.

A well dressed gnome sits at a table by himself writing in a journal. He occasionally twits an end of his black mustache as he writes

It has been days since I arrived in this place and so far nothing. The rumors of strange activity seem to be false. Most people don't know how to recognize the signs of multi dimensional activity, but most people don't come from a gnome family who have spent generations studying the different planes. Though I am a bit different then the rest of my family as they are merely content to study from afar, I wish to see the many worlds with my own eyes. Though my body might be frail I believe I have come up with a solution through my own studies to protect myself from the harsh and hostile environments.

The gnome stops writing as the conversation from the adjacent table grabs his attention. He closes his journal and hops down off his chair. He tugs on the closes persons shirt and when the man only looks in the space above the gnome he helpfully says, "Down here. I could not help but hear you talk of an old wizards home. You say that it might be haunted? Is it due to strange sounds or lights at all hours of the day? Have there been any disappearances other then this Cari?"

Oh yeah Ranph says, moving over who knows what Farnie and Jeya might have tripped.

He looks around for effect, and several of the villagers move over to listen is You see, that wizard has been gone long ago. The place is just a burrow, a hole in the ground. The wizard himself... has not been seen for years.

I an' only know it's haunted. That's enough for me to stay clear. No matter what the riches inside.

No Levar, completely lost in this new world, overhears a conversation about riches; a word that has become his weakness. He looks behind himself and sees the people conversing with the well-dressed gnome. At the mention of the gnome requesting the adventurers to come along with him, No Levar gets up from his seat and invites himself to sit with the others. ”I couldn’t help but overhear, but do you require some assistance in claiming these riches? I’m new around here and all I own is on my back…” he chuckles to himself as he gives a slight turn to show his bare skin "…which you can see carries nothing. I’m in dire need of some coin and if you need help, I have dealt with ghosts before.” He mentions quietly, referring to his long period of time in the Astral Plane which he believed to be some sort of afterlife.

Just a note, Aria tries to keep her tiefling nature hidden - she's currently dressed in such a way as to fairly effectively hide it unless you knew what to look for.

Aria finally winds toward the conclusion of her story. With a final surge of action, she grabs a chair she had set aside before starting, dramatically kicking it over with a crash. As it slides to a stop, she darts over and brings the rapier down with an overhead piercing slash, stabbing the tip between the slits of the chair's back.

The battle finally concluded, she returns the rapier and sheath to her belt and gives a flourishing bow to the crowd. "Thank you everyone for your attention! This will need to be it for tonight, this is more tiring than it looks, but I expect to see every one of you back here tomorrow for more!" With that statement, she sinks back into the crowd, work for tonight complete.

As she passes through the crowd, Aria catches part of an odd conversation about old wizards, missing villagers, and ghosts. Intrigued and with a glint in her eye at the possibility of a new song, she steps up to the table. Putting both hands on the edge of the table and leaning forward with a mischievous grin, she looks at the short gnome and the bare-chested human. "You say you're going to investigate the haunted ruin? Every performance I give is about a true event, and I've never had the opportunity to compose one about a ghost. I don't suppose you'd mind if I tag along?"

Well, I'm sure Fannie and Jeya weren't there for the knowledge, if you catch my drift.

Whatever spooked must have been quite bad for them to leg it like that. If you reckon you're brave enough, go for it, but I ain't following'.

Ranph's nameless conversation partner has left for the bar, but Ranph revels in being the centre off attention, and starts drawing out a crude map on the table, using mugs and tableware to give directions You see, he's where we currently at, Loghead Inn. he says, pointing at a mug, you follow the trail.. a spoon, and end up at the crossroads. Some toothpicks indicate a crossing path just move toward the hills, just off the path, and you'll find a door he puts a bowl upside down on the backside of the hill.

No Levar looks around at the other adventurers who have converged on the talk of treasure and figures they might be good assets for the time being since he’s moneyless and homeless. If anything, they could provide him with basic knowledge of this world and potentially earn him enough gold to purchase a ship and start a new career in this strange place. He leaned against the table, trying to hide the makeshift map from extra prying eyes.

You are welcome to split any items of value should we find any." He waves over a waitress and orders a drink for the shirtless sailor.

"Before we head out I think it is best you understand my intentions. My name is Cedric Fuzzyknuckles and I have spent most of my life studying the various planes of existance. I am currently looking for a transdimentional doorway so that I might pass through it and see what else is out there. Hopefully this wizard's magics have created one or at least disrupted the fabrics of reality enough to rip a gate way open." He looks at the group. "Any questions? "

Aria looks quizzically over at the just-arrived Yasmin, mumbling "Wait, need you, what..."

Her attention suddenly jerks back to Cedric at the mention of the planes, eyes lighting up even more than before. "Planes and gates? Ok, this is so much better than ghosts, there is no way I'm not going now."

Maybe I'll get a chance to meet mom! Although it would probably be a better idea for the sake of life and health to try not to meet mom...

Looking back over to Yasmin, still a bit unsure at her abrupt arrival, Aria continues. "Ok, if we're going to do this thing, perhaps we need to get a few more introductions in order. If you didn't catch it before my performance, I'm Arianna Valeri, but call me Aria. I travel from town to town collecting stories, and pay for the whole expedition by making a performance out of their telling. Delving into wizard ruins... well, that'll be a new one for me, but I'm willing to try just about anything once, and I've picked up enough tricks living on the road that I should be able to handle myself if there's any trouble." For emphasis, she pats the rapier on her hip, then looks expectantly at the taller members of the group.

Setting out, the group follows the directions of Ranph, and find the hill just off the trail that Ranphs described. From the outside, the dwelling built into the hill appears decrepit, cracked and violated. The wooden door swings awkwardly in the mild breeze, producing an eerie creaking. From here, the little hill look curiously bare, covered with brown grass and the occasional boulder, though trees stand all around the base of the slope.

Kludde:
I have the alternative racial trait Weather Savvy because it really fits the know-it-all idea of Yasmin:

Weather Savvy: Some sylphs are so in tune with the air and sky that they can sense the slightest change in atmospheric conditions. Sylphs with this trait can spend a full-round action to predict the weather in an area for the next 24 hours. The sylph's prediction is always accurate, but cannot account for spells or supernatural effects that might alter the forecast. This racial trait replaces the sylph's spell-like ability racial trait.

My request: can I make up the weather or will you give me the forecast? Will probably be a useless ability in Sigil ;-)

"Ah, well, yes, introductions. Of course! My name is Yasmin" after a short pause she adds "Diviner" as if that explains everything.

As the group gets up abruptly to leave, No Levar stays seated for a few more moments, waiting for the waitress to bring over a foamy mug that he immediately brought to his lips and drank down. He set down the empty mug quietly, not wishing to disturb anyone else, as he got up to follow everyone out, his eyes focused on the oddly short humanoid figure leading the group. He kept his introductions to himself as they made their way out until the diviner spoke up and gave her name. He wasn’t quite comfortable sharing everything about himself yet, especially that he wasn’t from this world around the expert of otherworldly things, in fear that it might cause some issues, so he just left them with, ”I don’t quite trust the lot of you yet, so for the time being just call me “Captain”. I haven’t been addressed by another name in a long, long time. If the split is even and I get my share, we’ll all get along. Some pirates rule with tyranny and tricks, but others such as myself have earned our power through trust and honor. Respect me and I shall return to you the same.” He kept his left hand on the hilt at the left side of his hip as they walked, the breeze caressing his body as they walked up on the hill dwelling, No Levar getting closer to check out the door and peek inside.

Yasmin:

I like the flavour of that ability. Under most circumstances, I think you can make up the weather. I'll figure something out on how this works on the planes. I'm imagining this as a kind of 'gut feeling', like (allegedly) fish swimming close to the surface when it is going to rain, or kids getting restless when a storm is brewing. A similar instinct would work on the planes.

No Levar peeks inside, and sees that it has been a long while since anybody has ever lived here. Seasons have passed, and worn out the woods, and bits of moss have started to grow on the weathered doorstep. Leaves and dirt is scattered in the entryway. There's also evidence of looters: four large holes indicate where once a name plaque would have been.

The entrance hall is capped by a bronze dome, which contains several glass-covered opening as skylights. A little sideroom used to be a coatroom, but contain only several rags, infested by moth. A heavy door leads further into the building.

Cedric steps inside and turns around to face to group. "It could be dangerous from here on out. If you have weapons I suggest you have them ready. I myself will need a minute to prepare. This may be a bit usual, but it is perfectly safe and I will be in complete control of it."

With that Cedric goes about drawing out a circle in the dirt along with a few arcane markers. He then closes his eyes and mixing some hand gestures and arcane words. As he performs his spell a glowing rune in the shape of a gear appears on his forehead. Also a translucent purple blob starts to appear beneath his feet and starts to envelope the gnome. It doesn't take long before the gnome is completely engulfed by the strange purple mass, not only has it grown bigger but it seems to be growing limbs. The limbs grow into arms and legs and a head starts to form. As the creature takes shape Cedric is calming floating inside what looks to be the torso. It doesn't take long before what looks like a translucent purple construct stands before the group. It's hands ending in wicked claws and it's mouth like a steal trap, and floating inside it's torso is Cedric.

There is no trap on the door, though the doorway is... strange.

The next room is a large, underground hall capped by another brass dome. The room is divided in two parts: the left side is illuminated in a pale white-silverfish glow, while the right side of the room has a more yellowish, and atmospheric lighting.

In the middle, on a pedestal, is a brass sculpture, an abstract swirl form, that has a large number of softly glowing marbles embedded. Upon closer inspection, each of the marbles contains tiny specks of dust, and has a little light in the centre.

On the left end of the room, there is a display of an ornate, great wheel, with a strange conical spire in the middle, and a tiny donut hovering on top. The rim of the wheel consists of a number of discrete blocks, each of a different form, shape and color, and intricately decorated. The middle of the wheel itself seems to be some kind of map.

On the right side of the room, the yellow light illuminates a large sphere. The top side is a bright white, while the bottom side almost seems to suck the light out of the room. Along the equator, colors roughly mark four quadrants: there's a reddish zone, a blueish one, a brown one, and a zone that is somewhat transparent.

The room whirrs to life as soon as the adventurers enter: the marbles in the bronze statue start flickering, the wheel on the left seems to pulse in size, and the colors in the sphere seem to flow slightly.

Stepping inside the room Cedric lets out a small squeal of joy. "Yes yes, this is all looking very promising."

Promising indeed, this hall is nothing short of a schematic model of the multiverse, the left side depicting the astral leading to the great wheel that is the outer planes, while the right side depicts the ethereal and the inner planes. The whole model seems to read to the presence of the adventurers, though: It seems like the spire in the middle of the wheel shifts ever so slightly to the lower left.

No Levar walks in behind them and his eyes go wide at the various diagrams and familiar symbols that represent the planes.

Knowledge Planes: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22

He continues his feign of ignorance as he slowly puts away his sword and silently walks to the left side of the room, using the knowledge the Githyanki taught him about the Astral Plane and connecting Outer Planes, trying to trace his way back home but is unable to track down his Prime. His eye gives a little twitch of irritation, or depression, as the idea of not being able to go home yet dawned on him. For the time being, he would have to stick with these others. In their short time knowing eachother they've already led him to a possible alternate path home, they might prove to be useful.

He played his dumb pirate routine and backed away from the charts, leaning against the wall and taking out his waterskin for a quick sip. "I've got nothing better to do. That does look a bit interesting." He motions to the large wheel.

Perception for Cedric: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14

No Levar notices how the creature works around Cedric but is still creeped out by it.

Yasmin wonders in amazement, would happen if she'd shift the spire, and as the thought crosses her mind, the spire moves ever so slightly to the right.

No Levar, unable to find his prime world, feels a sense of irritation. Upon feeling a sense of being trapped, he notices a patch on the lower end of the wheel - a part of the outside rim resembling floating mountains (No Levar recognises it as Carceri, the prison plane) - glowing red and enlarging a bit.

No Levar gets an idea, feeling a little more in control now as he forces his mind to think of treasure and riches. If the glowing changes to a different plane, he'll use the opportunity to tell the others, "I think this thing is telling us where to go."

Perception for Cedric: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7

Aria, distracted by all the pretty glowing lights and with little experience with summoners, fails to notice how Cedric's eidolon functions. She mostly just chalks the whole thing up to gnomes being gnomes - they're all just a bit odd :)

Bardic Knowledge (Planes): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

Arianna enters the room, looking in wonder at the various planar models. "A planar map! This thing is beautiful!" She approaches the central sculpture, staring deeply into one of the marbles before tapping it with the tip of one of her claws. "So Cedric, you said you were looking for some kind of gate - do you think this will help? I would imagine a model of this nature might serve as a good focus for a spell caster looking to weave planar magic." That thought in mind, Aria starts looking around the room for anything that might be a record or inscription left by the model's creator.

Arianna looks for records and inscriptions. As soon as she so much as starts the process, the great wheel starts showing road, arrow, landmarks and city names. "Ribcage", "Tradegate", "Automata", "Xaos" (though that name seems to shift a bit, the letter don't quite stay in place, 'Axos', 'Soxa'). On the right side of the room, the light seems to shift, and illuminates a desk with a drawer. Two books are inside: one must have been the wizard's spell book, while the other is a kind of journal, though time seems to have taken its toll on it.

"...I have managed to recreate a miniature version of it, which demonstrates the power of the mind. According to one's emotions, one's beliefs and desires, it is possible to be the architect of..."

a large passage is lost

"...excursion to the world Ash, I now have components from most of the planes of chaos, by far the most daunting task. All that rest is the completion of extracts of the planes of law, and my work will be completed... (illegible) ..plane of Baator... (illegible) ...focus the doorway."

Arianna takes the two books over to the party members. She hands the spellbook over to Yasmin, "May be something in here you can use." She then shows the passages she has discovered to the rest of the party. "So it looks like... perhaps this room is some kind of key? From the one passage, it may be incomplete - hmm, I wonder if there's something about the planes of Law on the model that's different..."

With that, Aria hands the book over to Cedric, and looks to the model, trying to identify any differences between the Law planes and the others.

"Oooh thank you this is very helpful." Cedric says as he pours over the journals contents.

He will then try and assist Arianna in looking for a difference on the model.

No Levar will continue to focus his mind on wealth, treasure, riches and other mental images of gold and precious gems. He uses his knowledge of the various planes to try and remember a few of the ones that happen to glow from his thoughts, marking them down in a "mental pirate treasure map" in his head.

Yasmin settles herself in a corner and starts flipping through the book

The spell book contains a number of lower-level spells: grease, shield, disguise self, alter self, pyrotechnics, flaming sphere and fog cloud.

Arianna focuses of finding a key, while No Levar focuses on treasure. No, from the corner of his eye, sees a flickering on the right side of the room: between the brown quadrant on the equator, and the glowing north pole is a crystallic stripe, which seems to pulse. Closer inspection reveals a single loose topaz gemstone.

Cedric inspects the great wheel, and sees that most of the parts representing planes contain some pieces of material: soil, grass, an item. Only on the lower left side - where the Nine Hells are - does this seem to be missing.

The Knowledge Planes check was to see if I could determine what plane the glowing gem is supposed to represent. Unless it's just a random gemstone in which case No Levar will pocket it. :P

"If this journal is correct then this wizard was a very accomplished planar traveler. It looks like this model holds a piece of each plane he as visited. Unfortunately it looks like he either didn't get a chance to visit the Nine hells or met his end there." The large eidolon rubs his hands together in excitement. "I wonder if there is a way to open a portal with this equipment."

No Levar knowns that in the inner planes, the boundary between the positive energy plane (the glowing one at the top) and the elemental plane of earth is marked with the elemental plane of minerals. This is where the gem comes from.

As - uhm - the Fuzzyknuckleduster focuses on finding a portal, a wooden door appears in the back of the room.

Arianna looks at the freshly revealed door. "I don't think that was there before... lets see where it goes!" She then steps up to the door and tries to open it, muttering under her breath, "Door, I want to know where you go, but please don't be the nine hells. If there's one thing that's more insufferable than a paladin or a demon, it's a devil."

If the door opens without issue, Aria will open it just a crack and take a peek through.

Arianna opens the door, and sees a musty, dark basement on the other side.

Arianna has 60 foot darkvision and is hence not slowed by the darkness, barely taking time to even register the change in light levels.

Seeing that the door is not, in fact, a portal to one of the many levels of hell, Aria steps through and continues investigating, looking out for danger and any sign of the missing townsperson. She still has her rapier in hand, having heard enough stories of wizards and their abodes to be a bit wary despite her enthusiasm.

Arianna steps into the room, which is empty, save for some dusty barrels and a few chests. There's a trapdoor in the floor, at the back of the room.
