Laucian:
Well done. The creature is called a worg. They are intelligent and generally evil, often acting as mounts for goblins, but it's pretty common that the worg in such a relationship is the master, not the goblin.

You are not aware of any particular strengths or weaknesses other than those typical of a wolf - in a larger, more intelligent package.

Male Elf Wizard (Illusionist) (3)

Laucian turns and replies to the talking wolf, "We are in search of mushrooms. I am no herbalist, but my friend here," points to Nox, "knows what which kind we need. Now I know a being as smart as you can see you are gravely out numbered. I also suspect that you being responsible for the goblin you master, it would hurt your status to also lose. Please tell us were to find this, and we will leave now with no further harm."

Spoiler:
Diplomacy : 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Wow! Great text but horrible roll...

Dwarf Barbarian

Very unsure of what is going on with the talking mutt, and the seriously strange negotiations, I'm unsure of how to proceed until I hear the word "goblin", at which point I tighten my grip on my war axe and prepare to charge the talking wolf.

Readying the charge action

Female Elf Druid (2)

Hiding behind Winter and in front of the door Sylvanis hunches down a bit and readies an action to give a command as soon as anything attacks the party.

The wolf give an audible snort. "Goblins! Those stinking vermin? I can't bear the sight of them -- can't even stomach them enough to try to bite one, let alone keep one as a pet."

He sits back on his haunches and regards the mage thoughtfully, "But mushrooms... I might be able to help you out with mushrooms in return for a couple of favors. Heal my mates and we shall negotiate. Kill me, and you shall not know where to look."

Male Elf Druid 4

DM:

Nox will roll to see if he believes what the creature says.

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 sense motive roll

If he believes what it says, he will do heal checks on both of the smaller wolves.

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18 heal check
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 heal check

Dwarf Barbarian

Suddenly unsure of how to proceed... The whole non-confrontational thing is confusing!

DM Screen:
1d20 ⇒ 2

Nox:
You think he's hiding something, but you're not sure what. You just know you don't trust him.

One of the 'girls' is bleeding out, but your better heal check stops the bleeding. A heal check won't allow them to regain hit points, though, unless it's long-term care, so the lesser roll doesn't gain you much.

Male Elf Druid 4

Standing after patching up the worse hurt of the 2 wolves.

I am Nox La'Athvanna. Protector of these forests.

Your mates will live, and additional healing can be applied. However, I feel it is time for a show of good faith before I restore potential combatants futher. What do you know of the IronBloom mushrooms which are rumored to grow in this place?

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16 diplomacy

The big wolf regards Nox for a moment. "Ironbloom? Mushrooms are mushrooms - but the ones I find here are quite tasty. Are you planning to make a stew? Do me a favor and I'll tell you where to find some. Do me another favor and I will will you were to find more."

Male Elf Druid 4

What favor do you ask?

Male Elf Wizard (Illusionist) (3)

DM

Spoiler:
Sense Motive : 1d20 ⇒ 8

"You ask for a favor, yet one from my pack has already show his willingness to trust you by attending to those hurt in your pack. What do we have to go on that if we do as you ask, you will point us in the right directions let alone the right mushrooms."

A pause...

"How about you tell us where the little stash is and if they are what is needed, we can then work out a deal for the rest?"

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The wolf ignores the mage, responding to the druid.

"There is a room down the hall - double doors, you can't miss it - within are a couple of creatures that have proven beyond my abilities to deal with. I have lost a couple of mates to them. I wish to see them removed. They should be no problem for warriors such as yourselves."

He continues, helpfully, "They are creatures of darkness and can fly, but you have shown yourselves quite capable."

Laucian:
Something in his tone makes you think he doubts the groups capabilities against these particular foes.

Dwarf Barbarian

"I like this not... Ye elfs thinkin' we can find the mushrooms ourselfs? If so, the talkin' dog can fight his own battles."

Male Elf Druid 4

Aye, we cannot spare the time to run errands for you without proof that you can provide that which we seek. If you do not have the mushrooms that we need, then we must continue searching.

If you can show us that which we seek, we can look into your little problem down the hall.

Would you prefer to take us to the mushrooms or bring some to us? We are honorable souls and have shown as much by honoring your request to avoid bloodshed in your home, and have stemmed the tide that was sweeping away the life of your mate at your request. We have no qualms with working for that which we seek

Nox:
Well said, but I would like to see another diplomacy roll, please.

Male Elf Druid 4

DM:

The big wolf yawns. "Feel free to search the rest of the building. If you wish to enter my den, you know my conditions." He growls something and the female still able to move slowly slinks into the room behind him. "I am done talking about this until you heal her." With a nod of his head, he indicates the fallen wolf whose breathing is ragged but steady thanks to Nox's ministrations earlier.

You have the distinct feeling that you've been dismissed.

Hearing the reply Laucian's voice start to change as the group has not heard before. His kind loving nature seems all but gone and has been replaced by a stone cold demeanor.

Taking one step forward as he talks, "How dare you back away from us you coward. First you hide in the back and let your females fight for you, and then you try to send us off to fight another fight you will not fight. I can see it in you that you don't even think we can win this fight you are sending us on.

Now, you will tell us were these mushrooms can be found now or we will dispatch of your fallen followed by your evil soul."

Laucian:
Wow, very nice rolls. Intimidate is a one-minute skill check, so...

Laucian's attitude changes and the big wolf's eyes snap to the new threat and he seems a bit taken aback. Now accepting aid another rolls for the Intimidate check; DC 10, use your Charisma bonus if you don't have any ranks in Intimidate, to give Laucian's roll a +2 circumstance bonus. Going once, going twice...

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21 assisting intimidation

Moving forward a step to parallel Laucian, Nox bares his blade.

Again, would you prefer to take us to the mushrooms, or bring them to us?

Intimidate: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19

Moving forward one step, tensing every muscle, veins standing up. I look as though I'm going to charge at any second, shaking slightly as a low growl begins deep in my chest, my eyes narrow to slits, and a snarl curls my upper lip. Props to Elvis!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Wow, you are an intimidating bunch, aren't you? Average check of 20 for the three of you. Crazy.

The large wolf's eyes narrow and he backs up a step. "Here, there's no need to be like that. I just thought we could do each other a favor, you know? How many mushrooms do you need? I have to leave some for later, you know."

Nox:
I had to check and thought you might have forgotten, also - the medicinal recipe requires seven Ironbloom mushrooms.

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Male Elf Druid 4

7 full grown mushrooms will meet our needs. If you can provide 7 of the ironbloom that we are searching for, we may still be able to assist you with your problem.

As I said before, we are an honorable group, but we will expect a modicum of respect and forthrightness.

Sense Motive DC 15:
You detect some worry in his eyes at Nox' statement of how much you need.

"I have six mushrooms. Leave me one, please, and you can have the others. I do not know where others might be, but I have scented them elsewhere in the building - near the front doors and in the room with the broken wood." He gestures with his head toward the room that Gilgar briefly looked at before entering this one.

I expect to be afk possibly until Monday. Have a great weekend!

Dwarf Barbarian

Didn't figure I'd be the first on throwing the dice on this... Funny

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

"We be leavin' with everything we come for, dog. Don't like it? Throw down."

Male Elf Druid 4

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 sense motive

He's a bit big to argue with my furry friend.

Firmly, "I do not have seven mushrooms to give you. I also do not have the hands to open the doors that hide more. You have the hands, I will tell you which doors. Let us go find mushrooms. Mine will be safe until we return."

Sense Motive DC 12:
He appears to be sincere in his proposal.

Dwarf Barbarian

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

Confidently, and relaxing just a little, "Lead on, dog."

Male Elf Wizard (Illusionist) (3)

Seeing the response of the group, and feeling more comfortable with what is to be done, Laucian steps to the side to clear a path to the door so that people can leave.

Again Lacian will stick to the middle of the group as they move about.

Male Elf Druid 4

Nox and Perrin will fall in behind Gilgar

The wolf leads Gilgar into the hallway and to the door just to the left (the one that Gilgar investigated earlier). "I haven't been in this room in a while, but last time I was, I could smell the mushrooms -- I just could not find them. I think they must be hidden in this room somewhere."

Description: Old cobweb-covered racks and armor stands dominate much of this small chamber. What must have once been a well-tended armory is now devoid of arms and armor.

The creature wanders the room, sniffing, before returning to the door. He indicates the far right corner. "The scent is strongest over there, as it was last time I was here."

What's in the far right corner or the room? Racks, bare walls and floor? Also, are the walls and floor here stonework?

The room itself is stone block. There are several wooden racks, primarily along the north and west walls (the door is on the south wall, west corner). There is nothing of significance in the indicated corner - while racks fill nearly every other part of the room, that area is clear.

Male Elf Druid 4

Nox will search in the area the worg pointed out

1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16 perception

Old dwarven stones, cobwebs, and dust.

Aid another or, alternatively, separate perception checks, please. (including any animal companions with the scent ability)

Dwarf Barbarian

DM:
Not sure if I'm stretching the bounds of decency here, so I thought a spoiler would be a good place to just blatantly attempt to get my way...

Perception (notice unusual stonework): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20 in/around that corner.

Since the wolf drew his attention to the corner specifically, Gilgar gets his nose close to the wall and, with the aid of the druid pointing out what he sees, finds the slightest inconsistency.

With some more searching and a lot of tugging, he soon has the heretofore secret door open.

The secret door swings open to reveal a short corridor with a wall of bars running down the right side. Four rusted doors open in this wall into four cramped cells.

In the process of searching the area, one of the racks is pushed farther away -- revealing four crossbow bolts with red fletching and red and yellow stripes running the length of the shaft.

Dwarf Barbarian

Explore the corridor and cells, looking for shrooms.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Advancing a short distance, you can see that each of the cells contains the bones of a dwarf, each in different positions. They appear to be laying wherever they died.

The cells each have the remnant of a padlock hanging from the door, but they are so corroded that you are sure they will yield to a good hard pull.

There is nothing in the corridor but dust and rust flakes from the corroding bars.

Do you wish to disturb the dead dwarves' rest?

Dwarf Barbarian

"Dog, get yerself in here an' smell around."

Looking closely at each of the dwarven skeletons to see if I can spy some mushrooms...

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

Growling a little in frustration, the wolf follows the dwarf to the third cell. The 'occupant' lies peacefully on the ancient bunk, hands folded across its chest.

"This one - in the chest of the body, I see one."

Gilgar:
Looking closer through the bars, you notice two things. You can indeed see a mushroom, mostly hidden by the rags still clinging to the long-dead dwarf, within its ribcage. And on its left hand, folded on its chest, is a gold ring with a sizable red stone that seems to have a tiny sparkle despite the relative darkness of the room.

Sylvanis and Winter remained back in the room where the fight with the wolves took place.

Gilgar is in the corridor peering through the bars at dwarven remains.

Where are Nox, Perrin, and Laucian?

Dwarf Barbarian

"Aye! I see the bugger!" Gilgar points through the bars of the third cell toward the skeletal remains of the Dwarf. "An' the body's wearin' some ring... Any of ye pointy-ears skilled in gatherin' fungus?"

Male Elf Druid 4

Nox will come forward to where Gilgar is.

Sure, I'll be happy to take care of that. If you would be so kind as to unlock the door

Nox will examine the room and ring after the door is opened.

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19 knowledge nature to examine mushroom to confirm it is the correct flavor of fungus.

Nox will also cast DETECT MAGIC on the ring.

Dwarf Barbarian

Gilgar gives the lock a good yank

Str: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

1 person marked this as a favorite.

With a shriek of tortured metal, the door gives way. The years of rust is more of a hindrance than the ancient lock.

Perception DC 10:
The shriek of the metal is still ringing in your ears as you register unexpected movement - the bones in the other three cells are moving! You get to act in the surprise round - roll for initiative (in a spoiler)!

Nox:
You quickly ascertain that this is indeed an ironbloom - even your non-canine olfactory senses can pick up the metallic tang they are known for. Also, the ring shows a faint magical aura.

Dwarf Barbarian

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

Male Elf Druid 4

1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20 perception

shhh...is secret:

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 initiative

Nox will take the mushroom if he had to advance into the cell to examine the mushroom.

Male Wolf Wolf 3
