Day 24: Riptide Cove

Culder has a nose for the shallower water and short dry tracks. The side tunnel leads to another choice of paths.

Perception Checks (Culder & Jordan at least, maybe Jarvis too).

I missed a description of an area that you bypassed earlier (choice 3 earlier, choice 1A currently):

The tunnel leading into this natural tidal cavern is decorated with the jawbones of numerous frightful-looking fish, resembling the throat of some hideous aquatic creature.

I've moved your tokens deeper into the lair along the chosen path.

Day 24: Riptide Cove
As Culder starts to turn right, an ambush is sprung: several spear-wielding grindylows emerge from the deeper water to the northeast (1A), waddling forward toward the Captain. Jordan's a bit quicker to react as more of the creatures try to sneak up behind the party.

The grindylows use their surprise round actions to close on the party; Jordan may take his surprise round action; then Jarvis is up at the top of Round 1.

Day 24: Riptide Cove

Jordan's quick stab is errant. The leadmost grindylows counterattack him and Culder with their small spears, wide mouths, and tricky tentacles. Most of the attacks fail to connect, but then Culder's tripped by his foe and splashes into the few inches of water in this section of tunnels.

Culder is prone. The good news is that the narrow tunnel only allows one grindylow to attack from the front and back at one time. The bad news is that Culder and Jordan have to hold the fort as much as possible. Having the casters stuck in the middle might work out nicely for you guys in the long run.

Watching Culder go down causes Aghon to react quickly and violently. He casts soundburst centered on the two grindylows that are right next to Culder. Drew a red square on the map to indicate the 10' radius of the spell. DC 16 Fort save to not be stunned for one round, and they both take the following damage, regardless of the save. I think IC gives a +1 to magic damage too, doesn't it?

Culder sneers and grinds his teeth in the shallow water. He, barely, keeps his anger contained long enough to stand and then let's the rage wash over him. Full of malice he swings hard at the creature in front of him.

edit: do they take an AC penalty if they're stunned? I hope they take an AC penalty...

Day 24: Riptide Cove

Jordan's quick stab catches the grindylow in the head, severely wounding but not quite killing it. Meanwhile, Culder regains his footing, but not before his nearby foe again manages to stab the big man with its spear (5 points damage). Culder's return smash passes over its ugly head.

A moment later, Aghon's spell goes off, the noise causing the grindylows in the eastern corridor to wince in pain. When the sound burst is naught but an echo, all four of the affected grindylows are still upright; the one furthest from the party (#4) seems to be the only one stunned by the spell.

@Aghon: The bonus from IC to spells is only for spells that have attack rolls, not area effects. On the good side, sound burst's AoE is a 10-ft. radius, not diameter, so I had it affect grindys #1-#4.

@Culder: N/A, due to ridiculous saves from the little creeps and from Aghon being up after you in the Init Order.

Day 24: Riptide Cove

Vincent, having no clear shot, readies a spell should Banner get dropped. The grindylows, though injured, press the attack. Culder's foe misses with spear point and teeth; though it manages to momentarily grab an ankle with its tentacles, it's not strong enough to dump the now-raging sea reaver again. Jordan, unfortunately, is both speared (3 damage) and tripped. With a clear shot now, Vincent casts jolt at an unengaged target (#7). Though the spell hits, it seems to do minimal damage.

The unexpected appearance of Jarvis's summoned frog takes the nearby grindylow off-guard; though the amphibian's able to swim up to the grindy unmolested, its bite misses. The freaked-out gobbosquid uses its attacks to try to kill the brightly-colored critter invading its personal space. It spears the frog and then bites it for good measure, even as its nearby comrade likewise attacks the frog. RIP Froggy.

At the rear of the party, two grindylows squiggle forward a bit to keep up the pressure on Jordan; the nearest one's attacks all fail to connect with the rearguard. Meanwhile, two of the grindys bottlenecked near Culder swim for another nearby tunnel (1B on the map); the one stunned by Aghon's spell regains its wits.

Aghon looks left, looks right, sees zero opportunity to do anything of immediate use, and grips his trident and shield tightly waiting to see if there's anything useful he can do. The two nearest Culder and Jordan move in to jab away with their spears. Though those attacks miss, the crafty creatures' probing tentacles hook the ankle of both men. While Jordan's again sent splashing into the shallow water (prone), Culder stays upright. His foe shrieks something at him in anger.

ouch

Jordan once again rises from the water, spluttering and coughing and swinging wildly.

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Grindy there gets an AoO

rules side-bar:
hmm... if you had just asked for my CMD when raging I would have said 21, but now that you mention the -2 AC penalty I’m not sure... without actually looking it up I would guess that the penalty probably doesn’t apply but it might. I’ll look it up and edit this post with an answer. Either way, thanks for that bit of mercy.

Aghon, seeing that there are about to be more squidoblins(TM) coming their way down the southern passage, hollers to Jarvis and Culder. "Boys! You might want to step back. There're about to be more of these little suckers, and we don't want you bein' attacked from two directions at once. Step lively, they're comin' from the south!" He then steps back to provide the room necessary for both Jarvis and the Cap'n to do the same.

Day 24: Riptide Cove

As Jordan stands, his foe jabs its spear deep into his arm (5 points damage); perhaps because of the pain, the cook's mate's riposte misses the mark. Likewise, Vincent's latest magical attack misses badly.

The grindylow lurking behind Culder's foe calls out something in the strange, gurgling language.

Aquan:

"Surrender and we promise we won't eat you!"

Jarvis is up.

Secret GM Rolls:

Grindylow #8 Spear (vs. prone): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19 for piercing damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Jarvis keeps his voice running, his song pumping as he hears Jordan flounder in the deeper water. Casting a glance over his shoulder, he sees Aghon moving back towards the group. Nodding his head at the priest's instruction, he moves back.

Day 24: Riptide Cove

Jarvis continues to inspire his allies, even as he moves back from the frontlines. As Aghon warned, two more grindlylows swim/waddle through the shallow water in the southeast tunnel, arriving near Culder but not yet able to work any mischief. The ones battling the Captain and Banner continue to press the attack, however. Thankfully, the little freaks pick a good time (as far as you're concerned) to get tentative and errant with their array of attacks.

No hits or trips for the grindys; Pirate Heroes are up again!

Seeing both Jordan and Culder continue to be hard pressed, and wounded, Aghon calls down another burst of Hanspur's healing energy to heal his friends.

Channel Energy Healing: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (2, 2) + 1 = 5

Once again selecting out Grindylow #8 and #2 so they don't receive the benefits of the healing.

Shouting a dizzying string of obscenities, Culder tries again to crush the tiny creature vexing him...

assuming that does kill it...
He moves to close ranks with the others before more of the creatures get in between them.

Day 24: Riptide Cove

Culder's cursing seems to have returned his aim to normal, with predictably gruesome results for the grindylow before him. Aghon again channels positive energy, and although it's about as powerful as other channels you've experienced, the cleric knows that it's still below average in terms of what he's now capable of producing.

Moved Culder's token back a bit and removed the grindylow he mashed.

M Human Vigilante (Stalker)2/Bard (Arrowsong Minstrel) 1 / hp (17/19) / AC 15 T13 FF10 / Saves F+1 R+8 W+6 /

Spluttering water, Jordan swings his sword again at the grindylow in front of him.

Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Day 24: Riptide Cove

Jordan runs through the final grindylow attacking the party's rear; all is quiet behind the group save for the distant lapping of the tide echoing throughout the caves.

Vincent and Jarvis are up.

Day 24: Riptide Cove

With no target presenting itself, Vincent delays. Eventually, a grindylow waddles up to take the place of the latest one to get mashed to pulp by Culder's oar. It takes a jab at the big man with its spear, stabbing him in the leg (5 points of damage).

I'm sorry- I was positive I had posted my next attack already...

Culder growls in frustration at having not yet finished off all the creatures, and swings at this newest annoyance.
rage/IC: 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 10 + 1 = 19, for: 1d6 + 13 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 13 + 1 = 20

I can spoiler some attack rolls if you want but I'm not sure how long Jarvis plans to keep singing... it's not going to be too long before I run out of rage either...

I was planning on having Jarvis stop singing if you were the only one still fighting the grindylows; it's probably not worth it to use a round of bardic performance to aid someone who hits the things on his own as easily as Culder does (or should). Let's see if other folks plan on taking actions or just let Culder break the bottleneck himself.

Day 24. Riptide Cove

Culder seems to have regained his killing rhythm: another grindylow is turned to paste by the Captain's oar.

Everyone else is up.
