"Let's take a minute to check on everyone," Jordan says. "Besides, I'm not sure I can lift too much at the moment. Feeling pretty weak compared to normal." Turning, Jordan heads over to check on Tilly and make sure she's alright.

People, right, that's who we should check on, not treasure chests. People. Aghon says and follows Jordan to check on the other members of their crew that are in the near vicinity.

Day 13: Island Hunt

The two men go to check on Tilly and find her unconscious but still breathing regularly. Aghon makes an educated guess that she was so weakened by the horrific appearance of the Badger-Hag that she collapsed; she'll be out cold until her Strength returns in a day or so.

Jack, however, is a different story. Though he still lives, his breathing is ragged and distressed. His only wound is a jagged claw mark across his right arm--far from deadly--yet he lies unmoving on the sand, eyes wide and staring. His pupils don't seem to notice Aghon and Jordan looking down at him. Aghon can only guess he's been affected by the hag's supernatural magic.

What now, brave adventurers?

vincent is going to press his finger tips together and then put his index finger to his lips as he pauses to think for a minute, after a few minutes of quite contemplation he'll stop and go over to the rest of the group. "We should send the weak back to the ship, let them be cared for by whatever doctor is on the ship or mage that could help the overcome their ailments. We should all head back really, if badger is seeking revenge then she's either going to hunt down her mother, or go back to the ship to kill everyone on it, or at least take as many as she can out with her before the captain himself destroys her, he carries enough magical items on him he could probably sink two or three ships before being killed. I do wish we could've explored more of this island, especially that shipwreck, but I fear that duty must take place over my own curiosity, and now it is my duty as badgers friend to put her down"

he'll then turn to Lythric "I have to thank you for keeping us safe, I hope one day to return the kindness that you payed us. But before we part, I hope you won't think it bad of me if I could ask one last thing of you. I would appreciate one of your spears, if we end up fighting badger, and sadly I believe that we will have to kill her, I would appreciate an actual weapon in my hands and not a letter opener."

Day 13: Island Hunt

When Lythric hears the story of Badger's transformation and that she's sworn vengeance on the Wormwood...well, that pretty much cements the aranea's decision to remain on the island as king of his own little slice of paradise. He wishes you all well and gifts Vincent (and anyone else who'd like one) with one of his handcrafted spears.

Aretta gifts the group on the beach with her presence, saying "That be the first sensible thing the finger-wiggler's said. Someone scoop up the fallen; everyone else gather wood fer a signal fire."

"Why?" Culder barks apparently not in the mood to take any orders. Throwing Jack over one shoulder and Tilly over the other, he counters, "Le's jus' go back where they dropt us 'n' wait fer 'em t'come back like they said they would."

M Human Vigilante (Stalker)2/Bard (Arrowsong Minstrel) 1 / hp (17/19) / AC 15 T13 FF10 / Saves F+1 R+8 W+6 /

"S'alright, Aretta's allowed a chance at a plan," Jordan says. "The signal fire here's a good one, because then we don't need to move the unconscious folks too far. You're strong, but we need you to be available if any other trouble comes up while we wait."

Jordan accepts a spear from Lythric with rhanks, and uses it as a walking stick. "If you and Aretta want to bring the treasure down here, I'll start the fire going, with the help of the finger wiggler and Aghon. Won't hurt the ship to see a different part of of the island, and we could use the rest."

"A dis'ress signal tells th'whole res' o' th'crew that ye couldn' e'en handle walkin' 'round an island fer a li'l while..." Culder explains, "ye really wanna bear that on board on toppa bein' fresh meat th'firs' mate 'n' his lackeys hate?"

He gives them a moment to process that then concludes, "No. We head back t'where th'boats comin' 'n' we wait with th'hurt folk we saved 'n' th'booty we found. Now gather up wha'ever sh!t ye wan' or need 'n' le's go."

"And we were dropped off in two groups, at two different spots." Jordan responds. "If I remember what Aretta and Tilly said, this is the beach they were dropped on."

Pulling Culder aside, Jordan gestures to Aretta and her group. "They're the ones that couldn't make it into the island. They're the ones that were rescued." Pointing between himself and Culder, he continues. "We fought a ghost and giant spiders. We dug up buried treasure. We walked all around this island and had a grand adventure, and somehow, we haven't died. You're worried about getting razzed about that?"

Pausing for a moment, Jordan takes a breath, knowing that Culder could easily knock in down if he accidentally crossed a line. Looking up at the big man, Jordan adds, "Look, if we go back in there, it'll be you and Aretta carrying most of the treasure. I'm about as weak as a newborn right now, and Tilly and Jack are exhausted, probably won't be up till tomorrow. At the very least, carrying them and the treasure, if we can even get all that, will be slow going, and I don't want to find out if there's anything else waiting in those trees."

Having made his say, Jordan turns, but stops and says "If you really want, take Aretta and Lythric and whoever else will go, and get to the other side. I can stay here and light a fire, make sure Tilly and Jack make it on the ship."

"I ain' worried 'bout gettin' razzed 'cause I'll be waitin' on th'beach we was dropt on, 'long with th'folks we rescued 'n' th'loot we found." Culder answers flatly, and loudly enough for all to hear, "iffin I gotta carry e'erything there me self I will. Ye all can stay here 'n' call fer help 'r ye can man up 'n' come with.

Having made his intentions clear, he sets off for their original beach with the two injured crewmates still loaded on his shoulders.

Aghon also gladly accepts on of Lythric's spears, figuring it's similar enough to a trident that he should be able to stick people with the pointy end well enough. Thanks! He says. While Culder and Jordan are arguing, he summons some of Hanspur's healing energy to see if it helps out the unconscious.

After their argument is finished and it's abundantly clear where Culder is going, Aghon grabs whatever he can to be of assistance and follows his true Captain. Hold up Cap'n! I'm comin'.

Are the stats for Lythric's spears, the same as a normal spear in the equipment table?

Jordan sighs, and drags both of his hands down his face. Smacking is own cheeks a few times, he heads off with Aghon. Leaning towards the cleric, he asks "Any chance you've got a prayer that can make it easier to carry them boxes?"

Each full box is 150 lbs. As far as I'm aware, Culder is the only one who can carry a box by himself, they'll each take 2 people to a box after that.

I cast Ant Haul on Culder right before we heard Tilly scream, and it has four hours on it, so I'm guessing it is still active, yes?

Aghon points at Culder and says, I already used the only spell I prepared on Culder just under an hour ago. He should still be good. I'm guessing if we ask really nicely he'll carry Jack, Tilly, and two of the chests. Aghon says adding one of his patented wink'n'grins for added emphasis.

Ant haul triples carrying capacity and Culder's got a natural STR of 18 which means his heavy load is 900 lbs. 900*3= 1,800 lbs. <--- That's a lot of weight!

i think it might come down to not how much he can carry, but how much he cans hold as it appears that we have several large items (two knocked out people, and a chest. might be best if we took the time to make like a stretcher that culder could drag or something

during this entire exchange vincent will begin thinking to himself "hm, I hope they aren't always like this, maybe it would've been better if I threw my lot in with aretta and her thugs" and will begin place between culder and whoever is in the back. "out of curiosity captain, how will you pull along two people and a chest?"

Day 13: Island Hunt

To answer some questions first: Ant haul is still active; Lythric's spears, while homemade, function as normal spears. Also to Aghon, I already made Heal checks for your PC with Jordan helping with Aid Another in a spoiler after you both mentioned checking on the fallen; if you want, I can refrain from doing so in the future...was just taking a liberty to push us along.

Lythric gladly helps by supplying webbing to ease the construction of stretchers for Jack and Tilly. When Culder congratulates Aghon for coming up with the idea, the smirking pirate woman comments, "'Twas the fing...er, Vincent there...what suggested makin' stretchers." After trying to sow a bit of dissention in the ranks, Aretta perks up at the repeated mention of treasure and asks anyone who'll answer where the chests were found and what guardian(s) had to be overcome to claim it. Although she, too, claims to have been weakened in her encounter with the first hag, the pirate tries her best to pull her own weight and then some to get everyone and everything back to the other beach.

Lythric says farewell and slips back into the jungle when Maheem and Syl Lonegan row into sight a couple hours after your weary group arrives at the eastern shoreline. "What the hell happened here?" Maheem asks as he drags the small boat onto the sand. Aretta immediately moves to Syl's side and begins whispering in the leggy lady's ear; it's obvious she intends to be among the first group rowed back to the Wormwood.

After a brief discussion, Maheem suggests that he and Culder take the rows and make three trip from the back to the Wormwood: the first taking Aretta, Jordan, Jack, and Tilly back; the second Aghon, Jarvis, Vincent, and Syl; and a last run to ferry the three treasure chests back. Any objections?

Sense Motive DC Result 14+:

You're pretty sure Aretta will be making a report to Plugg and/or Scourge as soon as she gets back to the Wormwood, likely using her own warped version of 'facts' and 'the truth.'

Maheem seems genuinely concerned about what befell Jack and Tilly.

Look, I think Jack and Tilly on the first trip back, absolutely the right choice. But probably better for Aretta to hang back for the second trip. We know there were already some big nasty things on this island, and likely more. In a scrap, even if you've been weakened Aretta, you're like as much to be able to fend off the nasties better than I can. I also have some little bit of magic, so I can offer my help to the lady mage aboard to try tending to the others as they show up. Leaving me ashore for the first trip is just a waste. Plus, I can help get rigging all ready so we can make a rapid departure when we all return. Jarvis says, not even attempting to figure Aretta's motives out. After hearing from Aretta, Syl's brow furrows. When she hears Maheem's ferrying suggestion get challenged, she steps up to the Radahoumi man and whispers something into his ear. Maheem scowls (as usual) before announcing that Jarvis can take Jordan's place on the first trip: Aretta has seniority and gets to go on the first trip if she so chooses.

Aretta's sent reeling by Culder's blow, blood and loose teeth (courtesy of the advanced scurvy spell Aghon cast on her previously) flying through the air from the impact. Syl snarls and draws her cutlass, perhaps remembering that Culder punched her earlier as well (or perhaps not remembering that the mighty sailor's blow knocked her senseless), but Maheem grabs her wrist, preventing the woman from attacking. He glares at Jordan as the cook's mate nocks an arrow in his bow.

can I redo my response to Maher as well?

How much of it? I don't want to do a total redact if I can help it; I just wanted to cut out the parts where I assumed a return to the Wormwood.

"S'rry, Maheem, but ain' a soul steppin' on this boat 'til things is sorted." Culder answers through gritted teeth, "either I get each o' yer word that we's proper crewmates 'n' the bullsh!t tattlin' and pickin' fights is ended--from both sides--or ye tell me we ain' 'n' we end this like proper enemies..."

Culder here ain't wrong you know. You all gave us a proper greetin' in spaces that first mornin'. Since then, a fair lot have come around and we're all pullin' together. When, and if, we ever get a chance to test our mettle on another ship, this infightin' is gonna lose us money if not our heads. Jarvis looks over to the large oar-wielder. You should all know by know that this isn't my first lolly around on a pirate ship. If you'll give your proper word, on your share of the booty, I'll sing your praises as well as these other shippies.

Actually, nothing needs to change. I hadn't seen all of the changes. I'm just going to assume that I'm not in the boat yet, just over by Jack and Tilly.

Jordan pipes up from over near Tilly and Jack. "I think you know how this will go if you try and start the fight," he says to Maheem, Syl, and Aretta. "Even if you try and take us down, we're on even footing, and there's more of us. You'd be left for your bones to bleach on this island, and we'd be bloodied, some of us dead at worst...and there's a hag that could attack the ship at any moment."

Looking at Maheem, as the leader of his group, Jordan continues. "We aren't asking to be best mates or anything. Don't particularly care if we ever become friends, Jarvis and Culder are right, we need the fights and lies to stop. So how about it? We need to at least try and act like a crew."

yes! well done Jordan!

"What he said," Culder adds with an appreciative nod to the cook's mate, "this kinda showdown be where our curren' course leads, but it ain' gotta be this way..."

do they seem like Jordan's words are really getting through?
sense motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10 (nevermind...)

edit: Jarvis- you could aid other to bump that to a 33... (would be a DC 10 diplomacy check for you)

Jarvis will aid another, since Jordan made the first one. :)

So what do you guys say? Will we drop the open animosity and ridiculousness?

I'm sure you can see the undeniable truth of the situation. Can't you? Maheem? Syl? Aretta? You can see he's right.

Make that a 35! :)

Edit: Man! Depending on Maheem's initial attitude, that could REALLY work wonders. Great roll Jordan!!! Woot!!

Day 13: Island Hunt

Maheem listens impassively for the most part as he’s assailed with a combination of threats and diplomacy. As it becomes apparent that the big Rahadoumi is at least going to consider the words of the new blood, Aretta loses it.

”Fuh dem!” she snarls messily. ”Dey tawk o’ bein’ awwies an’ naw fightin’, but dis pwick (she points at Aghon) curst me awr sawmpin’, givin’ me chills an’ loosnin’ me teef, an’ dis fugga (she points at Culder) jist sugga-pawnch’d me an’ nawk oot haff me teef! Dey’re gawna pay!”

Syl Lonegan seems dubious as well. She gives Aghon an icy glare and demands, ”Did ya do somethin’ to Aretta like she says? If so—undo it now, as a show o’ faith an’ goodwill. An’ fix her teeth.”

Maheem considers Syl’s words as well before turning toward Culder. ”Syl’s words sound fair in my ears. Your god-slave friend (again, Aghon) seems to be…less than genuine…about the offer of solidarity.”

Ball's back in your court! Full disclosure: this Diplomacy check is more of a traditional one as I see it (meaning its effects last for 1d4 hours and do not permanently change anyone's initial attitude from before this encounter occurred).

Culder Only:

Maheem's a fairly easy book to read. He's surprised at the violent turn of events, probably resentful at the talk of a battle to the death, and a little bit afraid because he, Syl, and Aretta are, indeed, outnumbered and likely outgunned if it comes to that. He also seems willing to at least hear you guys out and isn't a big fan of Aretta.

now vincent will come off the bench to try and take the metaphorical ball (as well as probably a soon to be literal) and see if he can help move it along

Vincent who has been standing in uncomfortable silence and watched this conversation go back and forth will speak up "um, it seems like it comes to me to try and work things out. So I'm not a pirate, I'm a scholar I was taught to see things and use logic and rules to solve problems" he scratches his head and then gestures to culder and the rest "now I don't know any of you really so I cant judge your characters by anything but your actions, same for the rest of you really. But two things have struck out to me so far, you are men of action, because of this you are very violent men, and men who carry deep grudges. now I admit that we haven't been treated the best on this ship, but that's to be expected, and it seems like we've caused quite a bit of trouble. since it appears that we'll be on this ship for a long time, then it might be best to stop doing that, especially since it appears that you're taking things to an extreme that I particularly don't care to participate in" with that vincent is going to go and put a hand on aghons and culder shoulder.

"aghon, if you are in fact cursing aretta stop it, at this point your being pathetic and petty, it'll only cause you trouble and you'll never better yourself. Captain please control your anger I don't understand pirates like you do, but I think things will be a bit easier if you stop trying to assert dominance, its a new ship so we need to all build a new reputation."

vincent then turns around and sighs "I refuse to take part if this turns into a fight" walks up to manheen "if you don't mind I would like to take a look at aretta, I'm not a doctor, but I've read a few books a on the subject, if anything I can probably determine if its a magical sickness though"

dip if i need to: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17 heres hoping not doing much to anyone becomes a good thing

After Vincent's said his piece and Maheem has responded, Jordan goes and pulls the Rahadoumi and Culder aside.

"Look, this is getting no where fast. We didn't even ask to board this ship, and since day one, your mates have done nothing but try and give us grief," he says to Maheem. "You can't have expected we'd want to warm up to you after the welcome we got."

Looking over the assembled pirates, Jordan continues. "It's not like we're going to skimp out on treasure for the rest of the crew either," the cook adds. "But when we're being threatened with flogging and lies behind our back, what can you expect. Your friends are pushing us close to our breaking point."

Jordan paused for a moment, hoping his words are having some effect. To Maheem he says "If you can give us your word to not cause trouble for us, and that you'll try and that you'll help keep the Area from stirring up trouble, and yes, we've caused trouble too, but we'll give you our word that we'll behave ourselves. You and Culder can just shake hands in agreement if you like and I will personally owe you a favor, as well as I can assist you." Looking over towards Aretta, Jordan slips in "And we'll even get Aghon to fix up Aretta, because that's what shipmates do."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31

To clarify, I'd like to improve relationships with Maheem, and hope that he will agree to help keep loose cannons like Aretta under control. The hope is that he'll at least recognize us as adapting to our circumstances and that we'll be less of loose cannons ourselves. I apologize for spamming the diplo, but I'd really, really like to improve Maheem's overall attitude towards at least myself as a spokesperson (of sorts, as it were) for the group. Nothing I'm saying is intended to be in any way threatening, but more matter-of-fact.
