Let's say Aghon hit the retreating wounded rat, in the hopes that I can at least finish one of them off. As for the action, I guess I'll just hold at the bottom of the ladder, and fight defensively, hoping the +2 AC combined with Vincent's mage armor helps prevent any further damage.

Seeing that Vincent isn't clear of the trapdoor yet, Aghon assumes a defensive posture at the bottom of the ladder, and takes a swipe at one of the rats.

I'm going to pull a very vague and hand-wavy retcon, as Jordan's PBS damage would've been enough to drop the first rat.

Between Aghon's defensive slashing and Jordan's knife-throwing from the deck above, two of the tough rodents topple and lie bleeding on the wooden floor; as he waits for Vincent to move, Aghon starts in on a third, slashing one of the four remaining rodents scurrying about his feet. Suddenly, however, the cleric feels a dark force trying to effect him as the hairs on the back of his neck rise and tingle.

Aghon: Will save, please. Also, give me a (distracted) Perception check.

Vincent's head snap's up to look at Jordan as this new man who suddenly appeared at the top of the ladder, and climbs up to the top "you, your name is Brian isn't it? you're the one who helps make those somewhat questionable meals right?" as he reaches the top he hand's over his knife to Jordan "well Brian the somewhat questionable cook how about you also make yourself useful, I'm sure that these rat's were probably meant for tonight's meal, and you'll want to collect them while they're still fresh, even if they do look a little ripe already. Here this should help as well as you try to obtain tonight's meal" and with that, vincent reaches out and touches Jordan causing a set of cackling electric armor appears around him.

Vincent cast mage armor on Jordan as well +4 to ac

Jordan gives Vincent a quizzical look. "You're a man that'll either kill himself with his own tongue, or else find someone to do it for you," he says, grabbing the lantern away from Vincent as well. Looking down the trapdoor, he calls into the Bilges, "Aghon, you'd best hurry up out of there so we can pick them off from up here."

Out of curiosity, how far is the drop to the floor of the bilges?

as Jordan jumps down vincent raises an eyebrow that one's a bit to light footed for comfort, I'll have to keep an eye on him to make sure that I sick him before he sticks me. with that thought he lay's down with his head peaking out of the the hole the ladder and gives a sharp whistle. "oy! Aghon and... whatever your name is, the light footed cook who thinks magic is just casting spells. I suggest that you both back up from the rat's unless you for some reason like being hit by lightning and ice. you're both kinda standing to close for me to get a clean shot, ether that or let me come back down and give me a knife or let me enchant your knifes"

I need you guys to back up because if I were to try any ranged touch attacks i would inure a -4 penitently. it's like shooting a bow into combat, until I take precise shot as a feat It sucks trying to shoot into melee. honestly i'd have better luck with melee combat at this point unfortunately. offense arcane user's are useless until lvl 3. *sigh* man it sucks being a low lvl sorcerer. im just going to hold my action at this point, until they voice any alternate plans

Yeah, they're Tiny creatures so they had moved into Aghon's square to attack him. They'll have to do the same if/when they try to chomp you. I'll rule that the two you're not fighting are fair game for Vincent.

Vincent's snowball connects solidly with the back of one of the rats, causing it to squeak in annoyance and shake itself off vigorously to rid itself of lingering snow.

Another ratlike squeak sounds from the forward part of the bilges; immediately, the three remaining Peril rats break off their attack, withdrawing from combat and scattering. One rat manages to execute its withdrawal flawlessly, but the injured ones either make a bad choice in picking an escape route (Rat #2) or are staggered by a magic snowball (Rat #6); Jordan may make an AoO on one of those rats.

I'm assuming Jordan is close enough to get the effects of the channel, but the rats are too far away. Hopefully that's a good assumption on my part.

The escaping rats take roundabout routes, but they all converge near the forward part of the bilges where the unseen squeaker lurked. There, they bottleneck as one manages to squeeze its bulk into a hole more than a foot wide.

I guess I'm holding my action until we regroup, that or one of my companions are attacked by a creature I can detect

"If you ask me, it looks like they're running away," he comments back up to Aghon. His voice a little louder, he says "We can probably let'em run off and tell Fipps you two are done here."

Hoping I can move the 5 feet and use the remainder of my movement to pick up another knife.

The Wormwood's Bilges

Jordan's hurled dagger pincushions the already-wounded rat, dropping it. The other surviving rodent squirms through the hole after its comrade, leaving four rat corpses littering the bilges. It appears the threat has been significantly diminished if not quite entirely eliminated.

If you boys are not opposed, I'd like to see what's in that hole. There's something else down there. Something was directing those rats, and it tried to scare me off, which means it is scared. Anything with the power to scare a man from the inside needs to be put down, and quick. Wha'd'ya say? I'm thinking we can use the oil left in the lantern to start a small enough fire to smoke them out? There's enough mucky water in the bilges, if we got some buckets from the quartermaster we could just bail water on the fire if it started to get out of hand?

The Man's Promise | Ship Actions | Current Battle Map

I'm going to take a bit of GM's liberty here and assume that Vincent sends down the lantern so Jordan (and maybe Aghon) can take a look at the hole.

The hole reveals a small gap between the wall of the bilges and the Wormwood's outer hull; a narrow vertical shaft leads up, presumably to the lower deck and maybe other decks of the ship. This opening is far too small for even someone as small as Jarvis to move through; in fact, you can still hear the escaped rats trying to claw their way up through the narrow confines.

M Human Vigilante (Stalker)2/Bard (Arrowsong Minstrel) 1 / hp (17/19) / AC 15 T13 FF10 / Saves F+1 R+8 W+6 /

"I don't think we've got a chance of getting the rats, but you go ahead and do what you want," Jordan says. Still, by the light of the lantern, he looks around for evidence of the magic user, or any sign that something more than a rat had been down in the bilges.

Night 4: Bloody Hour and Beyond

The ship's bell tolls, ending the day's long toil. Aghon's friendly 'pat' on Aretta's back has raised the pirate woman's suspicions, especially as she feels weaker and unwell as she gathers with the rest of the crew on the main deck.

There's no 'entertainment' at Bloody Hour this night, though Scourge singles out Aghon for doing a crappy job of swabbing the deck. He begrudgingly gives the cleric and Vincent credit for killing the four over-sized rats, however, saying that performance outweighs his lousy swabbing...this time.

Aretta Bansion yells out that that's not fair, claiming that she thinks Aghon did something to make her sick. Although that seems to make Scourge suspicious, without any proof he's unwilling to act.

When the crew drinks their rum rations, several pipe up immediately, saying the foul grog doesn't taste right. Scourge and Plugg both seem very disturbed by this development, chatting amongst themselves for a minute before the First Mate heads off in the direction of the bridge while Scourge's scowl fixates on the troublesome 'new meat.'

Post your Nighttime Actions now please. You may also try to dump the diluted rum ration if you still don't want to drink the swill.

Not bothering to dump his rum this time, Jordan decides that tonight is a good night to make some friends. Tired, a little punch drunk from the excitement, he tries to strike up a conversation with the bard lass that had sided against them during the breakfast brawl.

Striking up a conversation with her, Jordan tries to engage her in a conversation about her skill as a bard, even going far enough to ask if she'll entertain the crew with a song or dance. "After all," he says, "Things've been gloomy enough around here, and with rum this weak, we could use a little music to set us on the right course this evening."

Plugg don't know about my anchor, but someone does... Scourge seems like a good bet... if Plugg had no idea about it, it might not even be on board... maybe I oughtta just start murdering folks in their sleep and then volunteer to stand watch at night if they give my anchor back...

At dinner he drinks the rum and says nothing about it. Afterwards he quietly returns to his hammock to contemplate causing trouble.

Do I have any idea where Scourge sleeps and whether he has any kind of magical guardians (or normal ones)?

Not blessing the rum, it seems to him, would cause more suspicion than not doing it at this point. So he casts his purify spell as surreptitiously as possible, still under the guise of prayer.

After that he heads to bed and sleeps the night away, exhausted from the previous night, and from the day's labors both on the deck, and in the bilges.

G'night all, sleep tight. He says as he tightens the ropes on his own hammock.

Do I have any idea where Scourge sleeps and whether he has any kind of magical guardians (or normal ones)?

Culder Only:

When you explored the main deck a while back looking for your anchor, you came across the big, loud, mentally-challenged guy guarding the stairs leading up to the officers' quarters: that's where Plugg & Scourge, as well as the ship's Lady Mage and one other female officer, retire each night. You also heard that a cyclops skeleton stands guard thereabouts, though your eyes have yet to confirm that rumor.

Jordan finds that Tilly Brackett--the bard--is among the nicer members of the Wormwood's crew. She seems to have healed and cleaned herself up nicely from her encounter with the rats in the bilges earlier in the day.

She apologizes for her part in the Breakfast Brawl from a couple days earlier, explaining that she owed Scourge a gambling debt and that Scourge isn't a man to cross. She confesses that she dislikes Vincent for the lie he told about her during the brawl and says that she's yet to patch things over with Maheem's woman, Shivikah.

At Banner's urging, the bard sings a haunting sea shanty for the crew, leaving all who listen profoundly moved. The crew is mostly quiet afterward, but it's not the usual silence of one clique not talking to another: there's a palpable sense of camaraderie on deck as the crew relaxes and gambles affably.

She gives Jordan a smile and nod at the end of her song as if to say, That was a good idea--just what the crew needed! Maheem approaches, scowling as always, but then pats the bard on the shoulder, complimenting her on the performance and saying that he's trying to convince Shivikah that Tilly didn't really say what Vincent claimed she had. He even glares at Jordan and says, "The food is edible." That may have been a compliment.

Jordan Only:

You feel like you're making progress befriending some of the crew. Sandara, Kroop, and even Grok are acting friendly* toward you, and now Tilly seems like she may be on board as well. In fact, she may be attracted to you.

* While them being Friendly is nice, with some more schmoozing you could bump them up to Helpful, which would be sweet.

Please make a Sense Motive check and, if the result's high enough, peek at the spoiler below.

Jordan Only (Sense Motive Result 19+):

While you think there may be some part of Tilly's attraction to you that's genuine, you caught her peering anxiously at Maheem and Shivikah and can't help but wonder if she might want to get close to you to protect her own skin.

Completely oblivious of anything but the sense that he may have charmed Tilly, Jordan drains his mug, and with a pat on the back tells the lass that if she ever gets the chance, she should stop in and favor the cook and his mate with a song, at least to liven the place up. "Back home," Jordan says, "I tried singing once, and they went and gave me a bucket, said it might help me carry a tune better."

if at all possible?
Before heading to bed, Jordan takes some more time to get to know Tilly, trying not to probe, but trying to get an idea of the gambling debt that she owes Scourge, and whether that's how she ended up aboard the ship, or if that's why she was down chasing rats in the bilges.

After conversing with Tilly and other crewmates in passing, Jordan heads off for a good, full night's rest.

Tilly answers Banner's questions willingly, maybe even honestly.

"My debt wasn't that much--maybe 20-25 gold, but when Scourge offered to clean my slate for a bit of inspirational singing for his goons, I jumped."

The woman goes on to tell that she was press-ganged about a year ago far to the north, from a tavern in the Chelish port of Corentyn; she's one of the more tenured crewmen on the Wormwood, behind only Scourge's toadies. As for why she was in the bilges that morning, it was the task assigned to her by Scourge. It's a bit unusual for only one swab to get that assignment, but thinking back, she's pretty sure three or four crewmates worked the bilges the previous day, so there likely wasn't need for more than one this morning.
