I'd say it's fine to use the lightning as added fluff (for instance, your magic missiles can take the form of tiny bolts of lightning; your mage armor could feature cracks of electrical energy). The damage, though, would still be force and not electricity, and the mage armor wouldn't zap someone who touched it.
Jarvis X. Crookrows |
The big thing Stormborn gives you in that sense is a boosted DC anytime you cast something with [electricity] or [sonic] in the descriptor. Additionally, at level 1, you can make a weapon a shock weapon for 1/2 your levels in rounds (so right now you could make a quarterstaff a stick of shocking and do an extra 1d6 electricity damage on a hit.
Elemental bloodline sorcerers can change the energy of any spell they cast to their own energy type (so Air bloodline sorcerers can make fireball an electricityball).

Waiting to give Culder time to catch up and post; we had quite a flurry of posts on Friday and Saturday.
@Jarvis: You see no makeshift clubs nearby. There are lanterns, but they're hung from the pillars and walls out of your reach (though with a successful DC 10 Climb check, you could reach and unhook one).
Jarvis X. Crookrows |
Yeah, not too keen on being a parkour halfling just to get myself something in hand. Curse me for not taking Summon Instrument! There don't happen to be any ropes on the ground over near to the other singy person are there? *sly grin*

As a matter of fact, let's say that that hammock attached to the base of the stairs' railing on the map is folded and hung from the bottom of the bannister. So yeah, Jarvis could potentially try to entangle her for a round if he'd like to try.
Jarvis X. Crookrows |
Hooray for plans for the next round! (other than some upbeat piratey Carry on my Wayward Son)
GM Piratey Steve |
Any chance of flanking? =D
Yeah, but mainly for the bad guys. ;)
Jordan's the only good guy left on the front line: Aghon, Vincent, Jarvis, and the gnome dandy have all at least taken a 5-ft. step back toward the ship's stern.
Jordan could wait (delay) for Bandana Man to close on either Aghon or Vincent and then slip in behind him to possibly flank, but in that case it's likely that Dusky McScowls-A-Lot and/or the dwarf could move to flank him.
Status Update:
Unconscious: Halfling, Culder
Staggered: Lady Longlegs

Yeesh. I've sort of created a battle map in Roll20, but you guys will only be able to view it at this point.
(I haven't figured out yet how to match the map's grid to the program's grid.)
Here's the Map Link. (You'll need a Roll20 account, which is free for the basic version.)
EDIT: If you guys send me your Roll20 names in PM, I should be able to set up permission for you to move your tokens.

The hazing brawl welcome wagon we have going on right now. From my past as a pirate/sailor person, is this normal among crews or does this one seem to be especially bad?
If it's normal, I imagine I would know some of the unwritten rules of things like this (no healing mates when they've fallen during the brawl etc). If it's not common, I'd react differently I think....

While it's not uncommon for a certain bit of hazing and/or establishing the crew's "pecking order" (with the new meat on the bottom), this sort of all-out brawl is out of the ordinary...especially since you guys did next to nothing to make yourselves unpopular during your first day aboard.

Sorry for my extended silence; long story short- I kind of got screwed by my landlord on a kitchen renovation and I've been putting in crazy hours doing it myself. I'm almost done and as soon as I have time to catch up on reading I'll post again (should be no later than Friday).

Thanks for the update--I was getting a little worried.
EDIT: For the others, I'm waiting on a potential change of action for a character. Will post when I hear back or tomorrow afternoon at the latest.

I believe this makes me unconscious. Go, fight win!
Ugh! Did I miss some damage when I made my new battle matrix table to track the fight? Yes I did. Crap.

It's all good. I figured I'd be going down soon anyways, so I better get at least one good hit in. Plus, I'm the sneaky one and the Cook's helper. I can have tons of fun trying to get back at these guys later :)

Nothing to see here. Just getting a little ahead of myself.

As long as they aren't fully dead, I can channel energy and stabilize/bring them back to consciousness. I just want to see them all running with their proverbial tails between their proverbial legs. ;)

* * * LULL ALERT * * *
Another midday doctor's appointment tomorrow (last one 'til September). I'll be back on Wednesday.
Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves |
I'm having a very minor surgery this afternoon. The good news is I'll have a bit more free time during my recovery; the bad news is I'll be high on prescription painkillers (so I apologize in advance if any of my posts are nonsense).

Speaking strictly as a healer... I bring you this message.
Jarvis X. Crookrows |
1: @Culder - Feel better soon and best of luck during your surgery (however minor).
2: For story purposes, are we going to end up being really very late at all for muster? Figure the whole of combat lasted ~30 seconds? 36 seconds? Just trying to figure out if I need to start coming up with whatever yarn Jarvis would have to spin (especially if I roll as crappily on a bluff check as I did on my strength/heal checks belowdecks!).
Jordan Bain |
My guess is that their plan was to knock us all out so that we'd be late. They probably weren't expecting us to fight back so readily, or as effectively as we did. And when I say "we", i mean all of you guys, because you did fantastic!
So, maybe a minute or two late, is my guess, maybe 5 or 10 if we tend to the wounded.
Jarvis X. Crookrows |
That was my thought. They imagined that we'd be steamrolled, not expecting us to A) Have a chance to get Culder back on his feet or B) Have an armed Culder that provokes AoOs.
Really, all in all, it wasn't a terrible outcome for a fight for us. Sure, we may catch heat and it'll make the conversations with some of our shipmates - strained - at best. But in the grand scheme, woo team!
GM Piratey Steve |
Just to give you all a head's-up.... Start thinking about leveling up. I'm gonna keep you guys at 1st-level for the next couple of encounters, but soon you guys will be 2nd-level. Wormwood pirates beware!
Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves |
I think I may pick up a brawler level, if that's ok? I've been in enough fist fights that it's probably time to be better at fist fighting, lol. Also, in an older version of my background included learning to make mutagens while sailing with some pesh smugglers (I was a mutation warrior fighter at that point), but I might think about taking the mutagenic mauler archetype too to pick that back up, if that's acceptable?

Well, we've been gaming together for almost 6 months now, and I'm that much more familiar with the Pathfinder rules, so...if you guys want to wander outside the Core Rulebook classes, I think that'll be OK. There are some things I still think are potential headaches (eidolons, summoners, classes that use grit and panache points, etc.), but if you guys want to expand your characters' horizons, run it by me.
GM Piratey Steve |
Can I get an idea of who comes through the kitchen in a given day?
Generally, it's you, Kroop, Grok, anyone visiting Grok's store, and the runners (who might bring the Captain's orders for meals).
Aghon |
This is not, by any means, a commentary on the GM, it is a commentary on the game itself. I've ALWAYS thought the diplomacy DCs are WAY too high, especially at low levels. The fact that the DCs stay static at 20 plus an NPC's CHA modifier is ridiculous at level one. This is a skill you cannot take 10 or 20 on, and realistically making a successful check, in a lot of situations, is impossible without a natural 20 on the dice, and a high charisma modifier. When you add in the fact that a failure by a number as low as 5 changes the creature's attitude one step into the negative, and you've got yourself, what I think is, a completely bogus system. It is for this very reason, that, in the past, when I've run low level games that required a lot of social skill, I've houseruled it and lowered the DCs by 10. Yes, I realize that means that you only need to beat a character's CHA modifier to move them from friendly to helpful, or to make a request if they are helpful, but if a game's forward movement depends on social interactions, it seems justifiable that those social skills should at least be in the realm of the attainable.
/soapbox
:)
Jordan Bain |
In regards to leveling, I'll probably stick with the Vigilante, if that's ok. i'll try to avoid complicated things with the class, mostly because of my own inexperience and the chances of confusing myself.
GM Piratey Steve |
You'd need thieves' tools or at least something improvised; otherwise you'd break the lock or locker door in the process of accessing it. That being said, the Fonz might be able to pop these crappy things. I don't have my copy of The Wormwood Mutiny with me today, but I DO have a document I made up with crew member's lockers and their contents. I think the designers came up with a new designation of lock type for these lockers--Poor. Most require just a DC 15 Disable Device to open, though one has an average lock (DC 25) on it.
GM Piratey Steve |
Ambrose "Fishguts" Kroop brings the rum barrel up on deck. Then, under the watchful eyes of Scourge and Plugg, the crew lines up to receive their ration (riggers first, then swabs, then the cook, his mate, and any officer interested in partaking (Kroop and Cut-Throat Grok are the only officers you've seen take the ration thus far).
GM Piratey Steve |
The rum barrels are stored in the quartermaster's store (area A9). The lock on this door is of superior quality (Disable Device DC 40 to pop it).
GM Piratey Steve |
ok dm give me the beating that rng believes i need
Oh, it's coming...just waiting for Culder to post his rum action.
Until then, remember Master Scourge's motto: This!
GM Piratey Steve |
Seems likely :)
Things can change in a day, though.
GM Piratey Steve |
sigh i'll start crafting another lie then. I'm not going to be able to do anything from a normal lashing and second lashing will make it worse.
You might want to make friends with the healers on the ship, especially the clerics (though they're both walking on some thin ice themselves).
Vincent Cahaihnes |
I will definitely try to do that, but I'm sure after what just happened with rolls i'll go back to rolling 1's. I might take the time to talk to some of my other "friends", see if i can find any useful information to scare people with
