Thanks for the update, Culder.
Anyone else know anyone from another game that might be interested? I'm actually in a game with a player who dotted this game for interest but never submitted a character. He seems like a pretty good--and reliable--player. I could shoot him a PM maybe...or we could just recruit on the boards.
Thoughts?
GM Piratey Steve |
That sounds good. My brother may also be interested. I'll talk to him today and see if he wants to submit a character.
Very good. I'll hold off contacting the player I know until I hear back from you.

My brother has expressed interest in being a sorcerer, but he's not sure he'll have time to gergert a character up before next weekend.

Everyone good with putting the game on hold for about a week?
Next week's a bit sketchy for me--no internet Sunday & Monday, then a mid-day doctor's appointment Wednesday (so likely no posting that day either)--before things get back to normal.

After talking to him, he might he able to get it up today (minus back story) but he'll be traveling tomorrow through Monday with irregular internet.

That would work. I'd at least be able to set up the in-game transition before I go spotty early next week.

Putting things on temporary hold is fine with me. Like Jarvis said, whatever works for the GM. :) Vincent the sorcerer looks good except for that one trait error that was pointed out. Looks like he'd be a great addition to the group. Are we still in discussions for Jarvis or Jordan to remake their character to provide trapfinding/disabling skill?
Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves |
We all agreed on a casual game, so lulls and pauses shouldn't be a big deal IMO. I'm at a conference 6/2-4 and out of town for a wedding 6/8-12; I'll try to keep up if people are posting but I'm not sure how frequently I'll be able to post.
GM Piratey Steve |
OK, looking at the calendar and various people's near-term availability, I'll restart the game in earnest on Tuesday, May 31st. If you guys want to do a bit of 'in captivity' RPing or testing of your bonds and the like, we can do that beforehand if you'd like.
My likely absence on 6/1 and Culder's potential unavailability for the week-and-a-half thereafter might slow things down a bit at first, but I'm hoping we can get back into the swing of things quickly.
Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves |
I just learned that there will (at least in theory) be wi-fi available at the conference I'll be at the 2nd-4th, so I should be fine to post then. The 8th-12th I'm kind of going to be in the middle of nowhere so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to post...

Excellent. I am/was worried that we'd lose momentum with this lull we're in if it got extended.
Enjoy your conference and wedding.

For captivity RP, should we assume we just wake up in a hold of some sort?
Technically, you guys woke up during the barge trip from Crescent Harbor isle to mainland Port Peril. You'd know that when you were taken aboard the second ship, you were carried down a couple flights of stairs, so you're currently in some sort of lower hold. To make some sort of RPing possible, I guess I'd better have the pirates take off your blinds and gags at least.
Vincent, unfortunately, will be unconscious for another hour.
New Gameplay post incoming shortly to better set the mood and scene.

Anyhow, I found something that puts a major snarl into your plans for commandeering the Gale's Teeth. According to the Skull & Shackles Player's Guide, a sailing ship like the Gale's Teeth requires a minimum crew of 20 (plus a pilot).
In prepping and researching for the next part of our campaign, I discovered that the above is not actually true. A crew of 20 is required to sail the ship properly; a crew of 10+ can sail with a penalty.
GM Piratey Steve |
No problem, Culder. As mentioned previously (I think), I've got a mid-day doctor's appointment tomorrow and will likely be unable to post.
UPDATE: A basic map of the Wormwood pirate ship can be found on the links in the Campaign Info tab and under my name in posts.
GM Piratey Steve |
I don't have to do anything special for Vincent to be able to post to the Gameplay thread, do I?
GM Piratey Steve |
Thanks. Didn't think so, but...better safe than sorry.
EDIT: REMINDER TO ALL: I've got a doctor's appointment tomorrow and likely won't be able to post 'til Thursday.
Vincent Cahaihnes |
Well Vincent is now only the playing board, nice to meet you all.
DM I will try to have a back story written up for Vincent before the end of the week, I hope you can forgive me if I don't though, since i'm prepping for comicon this weekend, and this hunter costume isn't making itself.
but I will work on it.
I wish you all well and I hope we can all live to atleast lvl10 before we begin droping like flies.
GM Piratey Steve |
Not a problem, Vincent. Since all you guys will be trapped aboard a ship for the foreseeable future, backstory stuff probably isn't a big deal/high priority at the moment.
Vincent Cahaihnes |
ok I finished a backstory that pretty much explains how Vincent ended up to going to crescent harbor and kind of explains how he got shanghaied. also I updated the description so it also kind explains how he generally acts. if you need a better description for either of the two people mentioned in the backstory I can accommodate and add on a small descriptor about them

Hmm. Technically, a waiter's not a cook and a cook's not a waiter. And I'm hesitant about making things 'too easy' for you guys on the Wormwood. I know it's only Day 1, but you guys seem to be taking your new life as pirates in stride, without a care in the world. Still, I think I'll trust my GM instincts and believe that Culder will find a way to bring discontent and violence to the crew ;)
On the other hand, the Rusty Drum is a small place with a small staff, so it's likely that Jordan had to help out in the kitchen on occasion. But that experience should be hit-or-miss while serving as a full-time cook. Let's try this: each time Jordan has to make a Profession (cook) check or its equivalent (I believe mostly Intelligence checks), have Jordan flip a coin (1d2). On a 1, he gets a +2 circumstance bonus to his Intelligence check (or other check, if it's called for).
Fair enough?

What's on Deck
Once I've dealt with Vincent's Day Job actions/rolls and any lingering conversations/actions from other players, we'll be moving on to dusk. There are a few daily activities at this time, the best (or worst) of which is supper.
Then each player gets a nighttime action. The choices are the following:
NIGHTTIME SHIP ACTIONS
Sleep: Go to bed early and sleep through the night (automatically recover from fatigue).
Gamble: Play or gamble on a game of chance or pirate entertainment.
Entertain: Make one Perform check to entertain the crew.
Influence*: Attempt to influence a single NPC.
Sneak*: Take time exploring one area of the ship. The PC can take 20 on a single Perception check or other skill check, but must make a check to avoid being discovered.
Steal*: Attempt to open a locked door or locker. The PC must make a check to avoid being discovered.
PCs may attempt up to 2 additional actions (among those marked with an asterisk) in the dead of night, but to do so the PC must make a successful Constitution check (DC 10 +4 for each additional action attempted) or be fatigued the following day.
I hope to have a Google Doc up tomorrow with this info plus rules regarding stealth aboard the Wormwood.
This part of the adventure can get repetitive and may well be time-consuming. I know it's been a lot of work trying to keep up with things today, but I'm hoping to make macros and create other systems to make my job easier. Also, once you guys start to match your crewmates' names with their descriptions, that'll make things easier for us all.
If things bog down or if any of you players start getting bored, let me know and we'll find a way to speed things back up, even if it means a lot of hand-waving on my part.
See you all tomorrow!
GM Piratey Steve |
who all is available to influence at night?
It'll change from night to night, but generally speaking, all members of the crew who aren't fatigued from their day jobs.
GM Piratey Steve |
PC Actions Aboard the Wormwood Google doc linked below my alias and on the Campaign Info page.
GM Piratey Steve |
Is Ambrose present?
Not on deck, but you heard him beginning to stir in his cabin when you had to deliver dinner to the officers and crew.
Vincent Cahaihnes |
Dm, i know this makes your job a little harder and i am sorry to do that, but i do have one question. what exactly is the tech level at? are blackpowder weapons such as muskets starting to come about? i just wish to know for rp-ing if my character is ever coaxed into telling stories about the things he saw on his travels prior to this
Aghon |
Would Aghon casting spells during the dinner hour in a quiet corner fall under the DC 10 variety of Stealth? Or the DC 20?
GM Piratey Steve |
Sorry for the late update.
Vincent: There are a few firearms beginning to turn up in the Shackles, but only the well-traveled or rich (such as senior ship officers) might own one.
Aghon: Let's go for the middle ground and make it a DC 15. Normally it'd be a DC 10, but since it's the 'new meat's' first day aboard the Wormwood, they're going to be under closer scrutiny.
I think I'm going to try to catch up with today's (and tonight's) posts tomorrow so I won't rush and make mistakes. I'll take a look and see if there's anything easy I can do now, though.
GM Piratey Steve |
Basics of the Wormwood's crew posted in the Campaign Info tab. I'll update it as you guys get to put names with the faces and/or influence some of these NPCs.
Specific info that only certain PCs have discovered is in the spoilers under the crew list.
GM Piratey Steve |
Fixed/updated the Wormwood crew section.
Sorry for the slowdown, folks. I've got one more table to build (right now!) and once that's ready I should have all the tools I'll need at my disposal.
Hopefully the pace will pick up soon.
GM Piratey Steve |
Just a head's-up to let you all know that I updated the PC Actions Aboard the Wormwood Google doc. The main changes are that you can use other skills than just Diplomacy when you take the Influence action (Bluff & Intimidate have been added but have slightly different effects). Also, the Perform action now has a nifty 24-hour boon that Jarvis just bagged. :)
GM Piratey Steve |
Crap! Do I have to generate a new link every time I edit? (Kinda new to Google Docs).
Jarvis X. Crookrows |
Not sure if you have to do it every time you edit. I'll have to check when I get home (and can get on Google Docs from my desktop) and see if I can figure anything out.
Either way: YAY boost to Charisma checks!
GM Piratey Steve |
Question(s):
Roll the perception before rolling combat stuff?
Is it possible to flank the pirate that the halfling attacked?Yay, fun time!
Yes to Perception before battle.
No to flanking at this point (see my post in gameplay--answer to Vincent's questions).
EDIT: And thanks to Jarvis for his timely (and time-saving!) post!
Vincent Cahaihnes |
question since talking is a free action in combat could i ask ethier team what they have to offer me for helping them? at this point vincent could care less about who is good and who is evil, right now it a grey zone to him ,he's just going to do whatever takes him back to resumeing his search for his friends/family. anything that helps him to do that he'll gladly take advantage of.

You could, but remember that talking (as a free action) is usually (though not always) taken as part of your whole turn, at the same time as your other actions (a round's only 6 seconds long, after all). The closest thing I can find to what you're trying to do is Making a Request" under the Diplomacy skill, and that would take 1 or more rounds to complete, depending upon the complexity of what you ask for.
Vincent Cahaihnes |
ok, heres something i never really thought about sorcerer's. so since my blood line is described as having living lighting in his vein's, would that mean when i cast spell's there is some element of electricity in my casting as my blood manifests itself? i realize that this would be silly when it comes to casting spells with a specific elemental description, but what about force spells like mage armor and magic missile?
