Having laptop issues. Will try to fix or at least post updates.
GM Piratey Steve |
Quick Update: The good news is that the computer part of my laptop is still working; the bad news is that its display is black and unresponsive. Long story short, I need to bring a blank USB flash drive to the library tomorrow to download new drivers that MIGHT help. The bad news is that my tablet doesn't have a USB port and all my game files are either on that flash drive or in my laptop's downloads. So while I can post updates for games I play in, I really can't run the 2 I'm GMing without my notes and pdfs. Hopefully, the display will get fixed tomorrow. If not, I'll update you via my tablet and maybe start shopping for a new laptop.
GM Piratey Steve |
Couldn't fix the laptop all day yesterday but had one more possible fix I could try from home. Turned it on this morning to try that fix and the laptop was working normally again.
I'll keep my fingers crossed. Will update later today (likely after lunch).
GM Piratey Steve |
I've got a midday doctor's appointment tomorrow, so my next post likely won't be until late tomorrow afternoon or early evening (Eastern time).
Also, it seems to me this game has lost some momentum. Since it was originally billed as a 'leisurely' game, maybe that's not a bad thing, and summer seems to slow a lot of PbPs to a crawl, it seems. I hope to push the pace more once we find out if Culder will be returning, or are all you guys OK with the current pace?
Jarvis X. Crookrows |
I'm OK with it, really. At the moment, it's been rough getting into Jarvis' head (scampering about on land isn't his wheelhouse so much).
GM Piratey Steve |
So...seems like there's a whole lotta nothing going on in the game currently. While I want to push the pace forward, I don't want to railroad your PCs to any large extent.
Although this is horribly metagamey, I'm going to throw another piece of info into the stewpot. My plan is for your characters to level up to 3rd level overnight. Whether that means after you've explored all or part of the grindylow caves or if you rest up and return for the early AM low tide is up to you.
Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves |
Oi- pick up th'pace ye scurvy swabs!
Hey all, sorry I was gone so long. I've conquered the mountain of work I had to deal with and am easing back into my games. I'm hoping to read through the 200 or so posts I've missed tonight or tomorrow morning and to be ready to post soon (if/when you're ready for me to show up).
GM Piratey Steve |
Welcome back, Cap'n!
You're still in NPC mode, oar in hand.
Also, start thinking about leveling up: that's on the horizon.
Aghon |
WOOT! Level 3. All fired up. Took Endurance as a feat, always been partial to not being fatigued after sleeping in medium armor, plus the +4 to a variety of con based saves never hurts. Got access to level two spells, took Fog Cloud for my Domain spell, Communal Water Walk (which is weird, because communal water walk is a level 2 spell, but water walk by itself is a level 3 spell...? What?!), and Sound Burst, a great offensive AoE that has the ability to stun targets, always been partial to that one too. Everything on the quick bar and character profile should be updated. Let me know if you find anything out of sorts Piratey Steve.
Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves |
I'm still trying to pick a feat... I might just take toughness, but I haven't decided yet. I was considering maybe taking cleave but I'm worried that potentially doubling the captain's damage might be too much... I have options besides those too... I finalize soon.
Vincent Cahaihnes |
crap just realized that I'll need to wait till level 5 to get precise shot, totally forgot about point blank being a prerequisite, Finally got magic missile and shocking grasp though, so Vincent will do more damage now
GM Piratey Steve |
In hindsight, I probably should've asked you all to make a post here with whatever changes you've made to your characters while leveling up. That way I'll know when it's safe to resume the adventure.
Vincent Cahaihnes |
I've upgraded, boosted my health, took the feat point-blank shot, up-ed my diplomacy by 1 rank, spellcraft by 2, and use magic device by 1 and craft alchemy by 1 (took an extra skill rank rather than a extra hitpoint). I also got my stormchild ability which does some stuff, and raised my saving throws. For spells I got my blood line spell shocking hands and took magic missiles as my newest spells
Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves |
I was thinking about taking the storm lashed feat, but I'm wondering how much you'll be using the weather rules? And whether the feat would have any effect on job rolls and stuff like that?

Ooh, good question. One of the Skull & Shackles AP adventures has a weather system, but it seemed awfully heavy on the tropical storms/gales/hurricanes IIRC. I used Stormwrack's weather system in an old 3.5 pirates campaign I ran, and that was pretty shipwreck heavy with less frequent heavy storms. I'll have to dig further into the Pathfinder system to see if it's different; being driven before a storm is almost an auto-shipwreck in an island-heavy archipelago like the Shackles.
Shorter answer is Yes, I'll be using weather in some fashion.
I'd likely work out some sort of system where it'd benefit you for ship's duties in rough weather...but how long are you planning on staying a rigger, Captain? :)
Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves |
Well, I'm guessing that captaining a ship probably has some job rolls involved too? And there is something kind of cool about the image of a ship's captain standing unfazed on the deck while everyone else is getting blasted by a storm.
I think the other lead contender is familiar bond (which would let me get a parrot or some other familiar).

And a hat. Don't forget the hat.
Jordan Bain |
If it won't disrupt the group balance too much, I'm thinking i'd like to multiclass to magus (eldritch archer) to prep for the Arcane Archer prestige class. I'm thinking of getting at least 2 levels total in Magus, maybe 3 to get that first Magus Arcana, and balancing the rest with vigilante levels till I meet the requirements for Arcane Archer. It won't be the most optimized, but I really like the things the Arcane Archer has.
I do want to make sure that everyone else is ok with this, because it will an effect on my skill monkeying.
Jordan Bain |
I apologize for being a bit of a chatty kathy tonight. Jordan is fully updated. Found a bard archetype (Arrowsong Minstrel) that does the same thing (sort of) that I was looking for.
Got some neat utility spells that will give me plenty of things to have fun with back on the ship while I'm sneaking around. Feat wise, I'm still planning on rapid shot, unless anyone has a suggestion for something else. I'll never be as good at singing as Jarvis, and i lose out on a lot of the regular bard stuff with this archetype, but it should be a neat little flavor.
Aghon |
Sweet, two minstrels in the group now. :) That archetype is very cool Jordan, I love that you get Precise Shot as a bonus feat with level two, and that selection of spells from the sorc/wiz list is great for a magical archer. Looks great! Looks like we just need to hear from Jarvis and we're ready to get things back up and running...

If you'd like to keep kinda busy while we wait, I can give you guys some info that might come in handy in deciding how you'd like to breach the sea caves (ocean entrance and the 'hole' seem to be your two choices).
When your group starts down the hillside toward the grindylow lair in the early morning, you notice a pair of the aquatic goblin-like things cavorting in the ocean near where you suspect the sea cave entrance is located. This time the things wear and swap two hats: Sandara's tricorne and Fishguts Kroop's once-white chef's hat.

Duh Duh DUHHHHHH!!
Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves |
Alright- I already get some weather/perception stuff from my class this level (and we're apparently painfully lacking in knowledges) so I'm going to take familiar bond for my feat and take a parrot with the sage archetype... the short version is that the bird can talk and will get better and better at knowledge skills as we progress. At 6th level he'll be smarter than Culder (and Aghon and Jordan), and at 10th level he'll be the smartest party member, lol.
Kojima |
"Skrawk... the cap'n be ready!"
took familiar bond for my feat (obviously)
Leveled as a sea reaver (2)
+1 BAB
+1 Fort
+10 hp (1d20 +2 Con +1 FCB)
+2 rounds of rage
+1 rank to each skill
rage power: reckless abandon
Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves |
I made a few more updates to Kojima, all his stats and everything should be correct now.
When I posted my leveling stuff I forgot to point out that in place of uncanny dodge I gained "eyes of the storm" (which you can read in my profile under 'class abilities'). Also, after +10hp that should be 1d12, not 1d20, lol.
@GM- any special instructions for the parrot showing up in game or can I just make a quick gameplay post 'explaining' it?
Jarvis X. Crookrows |
Sorry all, I've been slammed with work and sick little ones and a bought of stomach blech myself. Finally back to feeling like normal!
I'll be getting on leveling today/tonight. Real life is such a drag.... :)
GM Piratey Steve |

A quick gameplay post works for me. I got a late start today so I'll probably take a closer look at everyone's new leveling stuff tomorrow.
@Jarvis: Glad to hear you're feeling better. No big rush on leveling since I'll be offline on Sunday. Maybe we can aim for a Monday restart.
GM Piratey Steve |
Should i do something similar to explain how jordan can suddenly do magic?
Up to you; I'd be interested in reading the details.
Aghon |

And suddenly carry a tune!!! :D

Jordan Bain wrote:Should i do something similar to explain how jordan can suddenly do magic? And suddenly carry a tune!!! :D
Fair point. I was thinking something like this is what could be occuring
Jarvis X. Crookrows |
HP roll: 1d8 ⇒ 5
Short and dirty:
+6 HP (5 and 1 from favored class)
+1 0-level spell (Lullaby)
+1 1st-level spell (Summon Monster I)
Feat - Extra Performance (+6 rounds of Bardic Performance a day)
+2 BP rounds
+1 Fort Save
+Inspire Competence (can use bardic performance to grant +2 on a saving throw)
I think that's everything....

* * * LULL ALERT * * *
Library will be closed Sunday and Monday, so we'll pick things up again on Tuesday. That should give me time to refresh myself with aquatic combat rules.
GM Piratey Steve |
Sorry for the delay in getting a post up today. I spent 4 hours getting about 20 minutes worth of stuff done earlier due to horrid Wi-Fi. Moved to a new location after lunch and it's working much better, but the chairs here kill my back.
Also, there's a chance I may not post tomorrow due to the possibility of heavy rain.
GM Piratey Steve |
Sorry--I should have added the need for a marching order, as some parts of the cave are narrow and will require the party to move in single file.
GM Piratey Steve |
* * * * * LULL ALERT * * * * *
I'll be offline for the next few days; I plan on returning to action on Tuesday, 10/10.
Jarvis X. Crookrows |
I'll be out of the country and without internet access starting Sunday, October 8th. I'll return to the land of the interconnected living on Sunday, October 15. Between now and the 8th, I'll be very spotty as I get everything ready for the trip. In the interim, please feel free to bot me as needed!
See all y'all in a week or so!
GM Piratey Steve |
I'm guessing the lull in posting might be due to a general inability for most folks to do anything 'useful' while in the cramped tunnels. If this is indeed the case, and the party's plan is for Culder to go toe-to-tentacle with the remaining grindylows, maybe I can have him post multiple attacks in a spoiler to try to speed this encounter up. Their darned tentacle-trips can change the dynamics of a fight, though, and if Culder gets dumped other PCs might want to have certain actions readied.
Sound like a workable plan?
GM Piratey Steve |
Hey all -
Sorry my updates have been slow recently. I've got a few things on my plate that should be gone by the middle of next week. I'll likely be unable to post tomorrow (weather-related) but will try to at least post once a day for the next few days.
GM Piratey Steve |
* * * LULLS ALERT! * * *
In an effort to get things caught up/straightened out in real life, I'm going to be offline on Saturday and Sunday for the next two weekends.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Apologies again for my lack of consistent updates recently. I'm hopeful to get things back in gear next week (if the library's maddeningly inconsistent Wi-Fi will cooperate).
We seem to have seriously bogged down inside the grindylows' cave tunnels. Would anyone object if Culder (and maybe Kojima) make all the decisions in the cave regarding which tunnels to take? That might speed things up some.
I'm not sure I've done a good job of describing the grindylow pit. It's basically a submerged natural pit/holding cell with a barred grate covering the top. You can walk past it easily enough without consequence (assuming the grate's locked). You'd still have to cut the hook-and-wire snares nearby (which I'll allow you to do automatically, just so long as you guys spy them before entering areas where they're present).
Lastly, a spoiler for Aghon.
Assuming a Take 10 Knowledge (religion) check upon viewing the grindylows beneath the grate, you recognize them to be undead--some sort of variant ghouls.
Culder 'the Captain' Hargraves |
I've been pretty swamped still in RL... if one person is going to pick our route maybe have it be someone else and I'll just kill stuff when the need arises.
GM Piratey Steve |
How about if Culder's living backpack (aka Jarvis) decides where the party heads?
GM Piratey Steve |
Quick question, how does firing arrows into the water affect my attack roll?
Due to water's surface tension, creatures attempting to attack through water's surface count its surface as total cover (if a creature is partially submerged, it gains proportionally less cover); this applies even to spells that require attack rolls. The exception to this rule is attacks that deal piercing damage--these can penetrate the water's surface but take a -2 penalty to do so. This is a change from the rule on cover from the water's surface in the Core Rulebook, but it allows actions like spearfishing and firing harpoons from whaling ships.
