Peril at King's Landing

Game Master Nimon

The King is holding a tournament for his new Hand Ned Stark. You are invited to represent your house in the tournament.

Cheliax

So far recruits we have-
Tarris Mercer- Ranger of a Northern House
Ser Weyland Wyld- Knight residing in kings landing
Salamae Therandis- Silent Sister

Also a Bard from the free cities, another fighter/roughrider or cavalier , and a few others still working on concepts

So my IC is 10+1(lvl)+1(int)+2(dip/sense)=14? I have a +1 to my int, and one rank in both diplomacy and sense motive. (as per my house traits)

So, the Saracen-esque concept works? The quinessential... "foreigner".

Flowing whirling-dervish flashing blades combat style. I could work him being a decent horseman, as well. Lawrence of Arabia style.

If you've seen 13 Warriors, sorta the Antonio Banderas character, trying to fit in.

**correction, Dervish Dancer archetype.

I'm still finishing the character equipment wise and adding the Intrigue defense but it's pretty much set.

I took the first level as dragoon and will take the rest as a roughrider.

Cheliax

@Hassan- Yes, create a house you represent and a reason why you are in the area. If you are a pirate/smuggler type with no house affiliations then you will loose your point of status per lvl
@Tarris Mercer- Yes that is right. Now composure which is like your social hit points. Cha bonus+will bonus +1 per every 3 lvls starting at lvl 1. This is also in the campaign tab.
@Gillem- How archetypes work is you add them all at lvl 1, and you can only have multipul archetypes if they do not change the same progression. As a dragoon you can have Gladiator, Two-weapon fighter or Thunderstriker. You could take a lvl of cavalier, then go fighter/roughrider the next lvls.

Cheliax

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that I will probably do that then.

Will take a level of cavalier and then roughrider.

Please Lady Stark, if you insist on this corse of action, we will surly miss your husband's tournament. I hear he doesn't fight in tournaments, it is a shame. I bet he would be quite good. My brother Jamie is good at tournaments, as I am sure you have heard. Tell you what, you let me go and I will put in a word with Jamie and see if he can't be persuaded to fight as your husband's champion, what do you say? The short man said with a look so sincere it was obvious he wasn't, which only infuriated the already annoyed Lady Stark.

Then it hit them. The Cold. It was an unnateral cold, as if they had all suddenly took a dip in the Shivering Sea.

Lady Stark just greet her teeth and carried on as someone accustomed to harsh climates. The Dwarf was clearly shaken and for a moment at a loss for words. Winter is coming imp, you Lannisters know not the cold, but you will. Mark my words by the Seven you will.

Tommorow I make final checks, please have a profile by then. I will be starting monday night with or without you. I look forward to starting.

Ser Weyland is ready.

Ser Weyland Wylde wrote:

Your composure should be 5(Cha bonus +2, Will bonus +2=4 +1 for level 1, = 5. I see you had a ? about disposition mods. Depending on your disposition to the target you may have a bonus to your defense, which really isnt part of "Status", it should just be a seperate varible and I will correct it in the campaign tab. Inital status twords someone is indifferant (so no mod), unless you have a reason for it to be otherwise(like they attacked you, or came to your defense, or part of character backstory ect.).

Character is ready for review.

I ended up creating a Cavalier as it seemed more fitting for the character.

Looks ok , Con seems a bit low, your choice though.

Okay, I've updated her equipment and I think I have Intrigue Defense and Composure right. :) You keep saying Will, when I think you mean Wisdom bonus. :) If it is Will, let me know.

By the way, if you do want to make it low magic, and it seems fitting, we can limit my "spellcasting"/"prayers" by either limiting the number of times per day I can use spell-like abilities (perhaps by 50%) or requiring a concentration check each time I use them (or both). But this will make the game more dangerous without as much access to magical healing.

Looks good. Yes I mean wisdom, keep thinking of it as will, differant game.

Cheliax

Oh an on the magic thing no, do not have to limit it. Magic is just scarce and few people have it.

I'm bowing out... Maybe if you need refills. :) Would love to give a "Saracen" a try.

Cheliax

Go ahead and post in game play now. Discussion tab is also open.

I changed my Str and added some points to Con, but other than that everything is the same.

I just recently joined on this site, and I didn't find a proper translation of the books here (am Hungarian) so I avoided them, did in the last week watch the two seasons of their series however, and am close to finish the PC RPG too, and Game of Thrones got me hooked.

SO, I would like to join this game now.

As I see it, magic is rare or secretive so I consider to make a multiclass character as time goes on, and start out probably as a bard, but playing it as a "Cleric", as a Red Priest. Although if you allow setting-specific skills and feats, I would instead probably start as a Ranger Skinchanger.

depending on character:

- House Beltaine
Character "Red Priest" is the heir of House Beltaine, former vassal to House Caron. The young father of the character fought alongside Rober "The Bear" despite having a mother from House Targaryen and proved himself in battle, thus the new King awarded him direct vassalage to himself elevating the Beltaine Lord from under House Caron, and awarded the city of Woodroe to the family as well, which until then only owned the castle of Lightkeep. The lands of Beltaine are between those of House Caron and House Dondarrion. The King promised the title "Lord of the Marches" to the house but died before it happened (in case Robert is already dead), thus House Caron dislikes them (they own that title) and thus through their alliance with House Dondarrion their position is quite problematic.

Many of the lords South of King's Landing have marriages into the Targayen family, although this is mostly true for House Martell other lesser members of the former royal family were also known to marry into smaller families. These distant (from throne) female members married into families siding with Robert were the only ones spared during the massacre of the main family, and this is why the grandmother of the Character also got spared.
Recent activity: The family tries to find friend and allies near theselves or at the borders of House Caron and Dondarrion
Coat of Arms: A white tower with a white flame on its top, on blood red background

- House Ravenborn (House of Bran-Fitheach)
Character "Skinchanger" is youngest son (of 3) to the House. Centuries ago House Bran and Fitheach were the same noble family but events and time split it and House Bran became a minor noble family under House Baratheon on the shores, owning many small villages and towns, while House Fitheach gained lands and wealth in the North during the campaign which led to the Starks joining the unified Kingdoms. As time went by House Bran didn't become wealthier and stagnated in power but the family branched out and had many sons and daughters, at the same time House Fitheach in the North became rich and known for its traders and the merchant guards they provided, and inherited territories of three smaller families near them. Two generations ago things changed as the Fitheach lands suddenly had a plague and every male heir and the wife of the Lord died in it. The only daughter has been promised to a Stark but the engagement got broken for unknown reasons. Instead, Lord Fitheach managed to sign an agreement with Lord Bran to reunify the two houses in case no one else is found for marriage before his death.

Lord Fitheach died two months after this agreement and his daughter got married to the heir of Lord Bran, the father of Character. As the two branches of the old family were reunited through marriage and the children of it, the name of the House got changed to Ravenborn as the bird was the symbol of both families. Currently the southern territories benefit of the merchant agreements and trade which were based on the wealth gained from the northern lands, and castle Blackeyrie was constructed two years ago while the nearby city with the same name also grew in size and importance.

House Ravenborn had no direct involvement in Robert's Rebellion but traded weapons and armor for half the price to the rebels. King Robert hated anything related to economy but still recognized the worth of these deals, and House Ravenborn had a monopoly right on metal and armament trade inside the Stormlands after the rebellion despite only owning a single iron mine.
Recent activity: The family now has friendly ties with House Tarth and built a small trading fleet to expand their southern trade routes and profit from trade with the near islands and Dorne. They officially created the Guild of Black Escort, of which the black armored warriors can be hired to escort nobles and merchants. (commonly known as Raven Guards)
Coat of Arms: A red raven on checkered black and white pattern as its background

Whichever House is not chosen by me in the end, I offer it as NPC for the GM

Got the mottos

House Beltaine: "Justice lights our path"

House Ravenborn: "Feathers Do Not Make The Bird"

Cheliax

Jorian I could fit you in as we have just started. If you want to be a Skinchanger you could do the beastmaster archetype of ranger.

The campaign is set during Ned Stark's tournament for Hand of the King(Episode:Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things) I am using Peril at King's Landing as a basis, which was clearly inspired by that episode, but I have changed it heavily. Check the campaign tab for more informaiton.

okay, thanks

which of the two concepts would you prefer more?

do you use character traits?

also: love that dwarf, epic character, great actor in series :)

Cheliax

Either concept is valid. Yes you get traits based on your House, basicly adopt 2 traits but explain why this represents your house. I am open to you creating your own traits as long as they are on par with the power lvl of a trait.

thank you, will see what I can work with

not really understanding the "social attack" yet, what if someone has more trained skills that is listed? all apply? and what if a skill is not trained but gets still bonuses from some sources to a roll, will it then still not be added to the social roll?

Cheliax

Only class skills apply, most traits that give a bonus to a skill also make that skill a class skill. If the source does not do that then it does not apply.

decided upon House Beltaine, working out details now

have to ask about traits however, I think this would work the best for this campaign and also for future ones:

House has 2 Traits and grants 1 attribute bonus too (as per your rules), but the 2 trains it grants are part of the (House) traits, in a similar fashion as there are (Faith), (Magic) and (Social) traits. Unlike other traits one character can have 2 (House) traits instead of just one, this is the normal amount for nobles of the house.

I also suggest allowing 3 traits instead of 2 (because 2 would basically represent the House, while the third would represent the trait/characteristic of the person itself)

Why is this specification and creation of (House) traits as a kind of their own useful?

Because under this system we can have these:

Spoiler:
Trait:
Bastard (You are a bastard from a noble House, you gain the granted Attribute bonus from your heritage, and one of the House traits, but not both. You may decide to get a bonus Feat instead of the Attribute bonus or the House trait, but you can't exchange both. You start with no influence in your House.)

Family Ties (as a child of two noble Houses and educated as a member of both, you get the ability to pick two House traits for your character from both the traits of your fathers and mothers Houses, and get both Attribute bonus points of these two Houses)

Last of your Kind (You are the last of your House, this disadvantage also has its benefits. You spent many years in the courts of a Greater House and due to this you can "adopt" one of their House Traits -if it makes sense- in exchange to losing one House trait of your own. You basically change the merits of your family, and if you have your own children as members of your House they will also have your chosen House Traits)

Feat:
Active Childhood (You have seen and learned more things than those of noble birth who are only educated at home. You may have sneaked out from home or could have traveled the world with your parents to gain uncommon knowledge among your status and typical upbringing. You gain one additional trait which can't be from the House trait list, and in addition you can choose one skill which will always be a class skill for you. You can only take this feat on first level

So, just to be clear on what I mean: consider allowing 3 instead 2 traits for players, 2 of these would work as described above and represent the House merits and would be of the (House) trait list while the third would differ from person to person even inside the same House.

Example: Connor MacLeod is of the MacLeod family, his House traits are "Noble Savage" and "Resilient", but among his kin he is also a troublemaker, and has the third trait "Slippery".

Well, what do you think?
The additional list of traits and feat I made would complement the idea and setting well, plus it could also be used in similar setting with focus on noble houses. it is up to you if you decide to use these ideas or not.

Cheliax

You get two traits, you get to pick any 2 you want just give some justification for them in back story, can be a house thing or personal. Creating two house traits helps flesh out your house, but in the end it really does not matter. You are getting 2 traits, 1 extra attibute, and a 25 point buy, that is generous enough.

Hm, I think you misunderstood what my intention was with the suggestion, oh well. It would matter the most only if you plan to use in future campaigns the same noble Houses system and/or GM more Game of Thrones games.

Here are the family traits for House Beltaine I considered:

Spoiler:
Beltaine Archives
While House Beltaine is a mere shadow of its former glory the library and archives of it are still known to be full with books and scrolls of past eras, of history and legends. Every member of the Beltaine family has access to this knowledge and can find something interesting among old Rhoynar cookbooks and Valyrian chronicles. The character gains a chosen skill as a class skill, of which the basics were learned from the multitude of books. In addition the character also learns High Valyrian and an additional language.

Dragon Heritage
House Beltaine was always said to be one of the few families with roots in ancient Valyria but due to lack of written evidence it was mostly dismissed as tales. In fact the family truly was one of the minor noble houses there which arrived in Westeros together with the Targaryen invaders. The powers slumbering in the blood resurfaced in the last two generations in the children and grandchildren of Ignatius Beltaine and his wife Maerys Targaryen. Characters of Beltaine blood either gain Resist Fire 5 or +1 Natural Armor, but not both.
In addition, House Beltaine members always have dark purple eyes.

Considering the background and that my character will be a Red Priest these seem to be unique enough and also fitting. If you believe the Heritage bonus is too strong I am open for change suggestions or I just drop it altogether, although I think I have seen some trait granting Dodge AC bonus while browsing the list on the net.

I also decided to either go with Theologian (Cleric) or with Bard archetype(s) if Arcane Disciple feat is allowed. Either of these would seem to be good to represent R'hllor well enough. Honestly, I think second variant would be better.

What book is arcane disciple? If I GM more game of thrones, I shall GM them how I see fit, just as you would if you GMed. Not sure why people think the recruitment thread is a place to haggle about petty game differances.

...why so aggressive? I merely offered you some ideas on what changes could be done, a simple "no" is enough as answer, there is no need for haggling. Did my post to you sound as if I attack you/argue with you? If yes then sorry, sometimes my comments don't have the "tone" I intend in English.

As for Arcane Disciple, it originates from Complete Divine 3.5

If a simple No is enough, then why did you continue to bring it up? NO random 3.5 stuff is allowed. Most Games don't allow non paizio stuff, and my game is even more strict then most. Just find another game I am not in the mood, you've taken enough of my time.

...

After you stated that the use of traits remains as it is I didn't bring it up "again". I asked ONCE about a possible change, and then you immediately reacted like that to it, there was no secondary asking about the same declined suggestion.

Other than this issue, I already posted the 2 House traits I made to ask if they are okay as they are (all according to how you said they would be used), and posted the two most likely classes I could start with to fit the concept. Now that you cleared that about the Feat up I await the reply about the house traits. (in case you missed them, they are under the last spoiler tag)

I am less than a week on this forum, I don't know you or how most games are handled, or this specific campaign. This is why I mentioned the 3.5 feat extra, as I was unsure about it, because as far I know Pathfinder was made to be compatible with it. I rather ask about something than mess up because of it later.

The concept and name is already decided upon, stats are finished, and as it seems the character will be a cleric so other details can also be filled out now, all that remains is the decision about the traits.

This is me saying no, as polite as I can.

This is you, continueing to give me the xy and z of it. Let it go.

Now you say you did not know about how things are run. On the top of this thread, you will find some tabs. Read the campaign tab. In it you will see that for bard I have listed the less magical the better. On that alone one could guess that I would not allow some feat from 3rd party material that starts with the word ARCANE. The thing is, I have spent a lot of time with you. I was going to fit you in after recruitment because I thought you could be quick. I have spent more time responding to you, than the other recruits put together. I suggest you read a few games, get comfortable with the system, then apply to a new game.

[QUOTE"Nimon"] Just find another game I am not in the mood, you've taken enough of my time.

Once again, saying No. Go. Move On. I will not respond again. Continue and I will flag you.

He was just trying to explain himself. He was not going on and on, unless you consider it silly to clarify one's position. He did quickly shutup about teh extra trait. I can't read tone of voice online but your answer seemed jerkish. You can flag someone for asking a question, but it won't matter. Asking questions is not against the board policy. If he continued to ask you about the same thing over and over again, that would be different. No he didn't send me here, and the same way I am being civil with you now is how you should always be civil with others.

My rules will not change would have sufficed. You also did not list which books would and would not be allowed so you can't really complain when people start asking about 3rd party or 3.5 material.

At the very least no ____ should have been there. You don't even say which pathfinder books you are allowing.

In short you were out of line.

I would explain what really happened but obviously you won't care. I take it my message will suffice. There will be no more talking down to people or you will be flagged.

Frankly, Wraithstrike, I think the tone you're taking here is no better than Nimon - and the way that you've just suddenly showed up makes it seem like you're looking to pick a fight or something (though I might be wrong here - maybe, like me, you've been following this game because you're interested in how it pans out). In any event, your final comment is both condescending and comes off like a threat. If Nimon's comments are flag-worthy, then yours certainly are as well.

It's also worth pointing out that, ever since he started the campaign, Nimon has had several people telling him (in his own recruitment thread) that he's "doing it wrong," so to speak ("You should use the aSoIaF rules!" and "You should use E6!"). I myself would probably be annoyed if, after graciously offering to admit someone after play started, that player began to start suggesting that I change the way I had my custom rules set up.

Nimon was definitely stern and at least a little confrontational, but not grossly so, given the context. He already ended the conversation - your two cents were certainly not needed (neither are mine, obviously, but for some reason I feel a little sympathy for Nimon).

Thank you Deiros. I will continue, I can let my anger get the best of me at times. I have been struggling with some issues for a long time, and I do not take critism well. I am getting help at the vet center for it. I need to just take a deep breath and consider what it is I am typing instead of transcribing everything that comes into my crazy head.
Recruitment is finished. If you want to talk to me there is a private message system use that. I will not respond to this thread anymore.
