Odo arrives early for the briefing. His breastplate armor is well-constructed, lovingly polished, but a bit old in style. Close-cropped reddish hair tops his head, marking him as the target of many superstitious beliefs about "lucky halflings". Emblems in his darkwood shield indicate that he has served in both Andoran and the Mendevian Crusade. But, perhaps most importantly, a pendant hangs from his neck with a symbol of the Dawnflower on it.

Odo does have the lucky halfling feat. Once/day, if someone thinks they've badly botched a save, we can reroll with Odo's modifier.

Wadi hustles into the briefing room, surprised he is apparently early for once. He is currently wearing nondescript traveling clothes along with a scarf tied around his neck in the latest fashion for Absalom. A closer look reveals his light brown hair flows out down past his shoulders, currently braided in a stylish way. Sky blue eyes peek out from his youthful face. His lean, wiry body is covered in dark tanned skin with a reddish undertone only noticeable in bright light.

He nods in greeting at the halfing, refusing to denigrate his stature further by thinking of him as a 'slip'. Seeing the symbol of the Dawnflower brings a smile to his face. "Good to see a dedicated servant of the Dawnflower assigned to this mission! I am Wadi, and you are...?" reaching over to shake the halfling's hand.

The halfling takes the offered hand and gives it a firm shake. "I am Odo, friend Wadi. It is my pleasure to make your acquaintance. And your sharp eyes do you credit. I serve the Dawnflower with both scimitar and shield and by my faith."

"I openly wear evidence of my profession in my armor and weapons, but to my eyes you are more of a cypher. May I be so bold as to ask about the skills you bring to this mission? I might guess you a scholar, a swashbuckling adventurer, or even a magician and have no greater chance of being on target with one over another."

Wadi chuckles in reply. "Fair enough! As you may know, I am an actor by trade a rather famous one around here so I do like to keep a low profile. As for my talents,..." he takes out a well- worn club and holds it aloft. After a few seconds it grows warm and starts to glow with a reddish light, also reflected by the glow just underneath Wadi's skin. "This is but one of them, he he." As he lets the flame die he sheathes his club again. "As you can probably tell, such a talent is frowned upon due to its diabolical ties. I prefer to be discreet, but I will say foes that fear fire, will also fear me."

"Diabolical ties? That does sound ominous." Odo says, concern furrowing his brow. "Fire is a tool I am blessed enough to use as well, from time to time. But not hellfire. I will not pry into how you may have been touched by the Powers of Hell, but if that is where the power comes from, I can see why you may prefer to be discrete with it."

A somewhat frazzled elven woman approaches. While she wears dark, disheveled robes, most eyes are probably instead drawn to her bald, misshapen head, its shape reminiscent of a goblin's skull.

Here and just about ready to go, though there may be a quick tweak to purchases. More substantial post coming soon.

A half elf dressed in flowing green robes with hood over her head enters the briefing room. The very tips of black hair peak out from the hood and off the right shoulder a large all black nodachi is visible while a pair of cestus one cold iron the other silver rest on a belt hook near the waist.

Following behind the half elf is a dull to bright red quadruped fire elemental with large wings folded by its side to allow it to fit thru the entryway. The creatures sky blue eyes analyze everyone in the room as if trying to determine if anyone is a threat.

"Well Xander I'm pretty sure none of the pathfinders here are dragons or Aspis agents in disguise so i think we are safe here for the time being"

"While I don't believe I'm an Aspis agent in disguise, I admit I can't entirely rule out the possibility..." Jane says, seemingly staring off into space. As she speaks, a harrow card falls out of her sleeve, depicting three garishly colored masks.

"Oh. How'd that get there?" she bends down to pick it up, then turns to the fiery creature. She switches from Taldane to Ignan as she addresses the elemental.

"Hello Xander. They've been calling me Jane. Who is your companion here?"

Xander gives a couple of defensive that turn into curious sniff's in Jane's direction before proceeding to plod over the remaining distance between the two and nuzzles it's head into Jane's upper waist clearly asking for head scratch now that Jane has been deemed "Safe".

"Its very rare to meet someone who speaks my home language, few these days can speak it at all let alone with even half skill you have. Granted my charge Midri can speak to me telepathically at will and I understand whatever she is saying regardless of language she uses".

As if bidden by a silent order Midri takes off her hood revealing her shoulder length black hair, and with a nervous smile approaches Jane.

Wadi nods in reply. "While my power is actually elemental in nature, I was...tested to ensure my loyalty to House Thrune. Needless to say, I passed their test." There is an undeniable note of relief in his voice.

As the newcomers arrive he turns to watch first the pretty half-elf then the deformed elf woman. Such interesting tales they both must hold. Deciding to take the initiative here, he steps forward and bows in their direction. "Pleased to meet you ladies, and Xander. I have no ties with the Aspis Snakes, but like Xander I do carry the same blood in my veins. A pleasure to meet you all."

"Ha ha ha, my thanks Human, i have not had a good laugh like this in a while." Xander chuckles out in common clearly laughing at the obliviousness of his charge.

Midri pouts at Xander's laughter for a few seconds before looking back at the two other occupants in the room and smiles at them.

"Its always good to see a Paladin, and judging from the lack of a spell book and the fact that you said the same blood that runs in Xander's veins is in yours....you must be a sorcerer right? I've never had the privilege of going on a mission with a sorcerer before."

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Overseer post HERE

The sun beats down across this muddy plain, a scant five miles from the walls of Absalom. Fellow Pathfinders gather on all sides, including well-traveled field agents and more permanent staff from the Grand Lodge itself. In the center of the field stands a wooden platform, raised some ten feet off the ground.

As the lot of you already present theorize amongst yourselves, about your mission, you see that you're far from alone in your curiosity. The excited chatter from the throngs of gathered adventurers drowns out the buzz of summer insects as each agent shares what they've seen and gossips about what they've heard. Meanwhile, several vendors and Exhange members (never one to let an opportunity go to waste) wander through the area hawking items and gear of innumerable variety.

And we are off! As the senior Grand Lodge agents make they're final preparations, you have some time to see if you can learn a bit more about the nature of your mission. you can use a Gather Information (Diplomacy) see what rumors you can pick up from fellow Pathinfders, a Knowledge Arcana check to analyze some of the ways the field has been set up, and/or a Knowledge Local check to try and think of why you're all in this field in the first place.

You can also make any last purchases you'd like before the mission truly begins.

"Find your places in an orderly fashion?" In this sea of Pathfinders? Odo muses to himself. He shakes his head and decides that his place is down front where he can see something other than taller Pathfinders' backsides.

The paladin starts making his way through the crowd. "Excuse me, please... Begging your pardon... Oh, how are the kids?" he exchanges a little small talk with familiar faces and discusses rumors.

The four of you casually stroll through the nearby crowd, chatting up your fellow Pathfinders while being sure not to wander too far away from one another that you get lost. Xander's hulking appearence, while not alone in its otherworldliness amidst the gathering, is generally avoided by the other Agents. Midri however has better luck, and exchanges some words with an alchemist. "Yes, good to see the buzz finally reaching a loud pitch, yes? Something's been in the works behind closed doors at the Grnad Lodge for weeks; many scholars and casters shut away from the public eye. Even after the recent conflict at the Grand Lodge from those serpents, still they kept proceeding with their plans. Wonder what's so important it has to go on no matter what, hmm?"

A ways away, Odo gets cauhgt up in a conversation and small talk with another Saranrite. While she is unfortunately as in the dark about their mission as the halfling is, nearby the paladin overhears two gnome discussing recent expenditures by the Lodge. "That's right: skymetals, all kinds. They've been buying up huge orders every time a batch hits the market lately. Through back channels and face groups you know, but at this scale it ain't hard to follow the trail. And that's just the goods: dozens of the best caster 'mercs have been put on retainer too, especially plenty of evokers. Supposedly it all has to do with them reassembling that dwarven 'Sky Key' then found back in '14, but beyond that you got me!"

Wadi meanwhile, finds himself facing a Taldan woman furiously scribbling sketches of the gathering while asking questions of any nearby agent about their recent mission. Many Pathfinders ignore her, but in exchange for some stories that she quickly jots down the chronicler thanks him with her own information. "You're saying the city almost got invaded again and we hired the guy who caused it? What a scoop! This'll make a splash I tell you that! And here's a scoop of your own: the VCs and Masters at the Grand Lodge have been bringing in all sorts of experts and scholars lately. Researchers of dwarven artifice, Numerian science, conjurers, mathematicians, even historians with a bent towards early Absalomian history: the lot important in, transportation arranged, import licenses waived. Whatever's going on, it's a big deal. And today's supposedly a "big test". Word on the field is that the Ten need as many assistants as possible to handle whatever the 'test'll bring, and it looks like we're some of them!"

As she walks, Midri gets a good look at the field around her. While the half-elf can't think of any significance to the location itself, she does note that the The plain has been marked out with a series of circles - unusual for social gatherings but standard for arcane rituals.

A short, powerfully-built tien man walks carefully through the crowd. Although he is more than imposing enough to shoulder his way through, he is courteous and mumbles, "excuse me, excuse me" as he looks for anyone he knows. Unfortunately, the bulk of his career as a pathfinder has been spent away from Absalom, so he feels slightly lost in this sea of humanoidity.

Jane looks confused at Xander's approach, but will regardless offer a somewhat hesitant head scratch.

"Yes, I do have quite a few talents people would find remarkable. An unusual knack for languages is perhaps the most innocuous. If we should encounter any entities we cannot communicate with, I would encourage you to let me attempt regardless... Trailing off for a moment, she turns to Kuwabara.

Turning to face the group as a whole, Jane speaks while retrieving three wands from her possessions, offering them to any willing taker.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Prior to Shaine's big speech, Jane ponders the makeup of the field. The makeup of the markings most resembles a conjuration ritual, but there are enough alterations that even that seems unlikely. As to the field itself - the 'Bloodwatered Meadow' - it was a place where many of the invading armies that tried to conquer Absalom assembled before being defeated. One of the most famous conflicts here did not even involve Absalom’s army. The Linnorm King Yardvun Skolson clashed with the Thuvian warlord Attagesha hundreds of years ago as both attempted to besiege the city at the same time but refused to share the glory with each. They crippled each other’s forces and were forced to retreat without ever attacking Absalom.

She hopes that the field's history is not an ominous sign.

As you five make your way into the yawning maw of the caves at the new ground level, you see other groups of Pathfinders cautiously hurrying forward around you, each taking different paths and forks until eventually you find yourselves alone in the dimly lit tunnels. Echoing through the corridors is the occasionally screech or sound of distant combat, but you make your way down into the depths until you see light spreading out from a larger opening ahead.

Advancing, the stink of animal scat and rotting meat hits your noses and fills this massive cavern. All along the walls of the wide room are shelves, passageways, and fixtures that have been carved into the stone by careful hands. Each one is stylized to resemble a serpent’s head or body.

Ahead of you in the room beyond stands a serpentine humanoid figure, his thick squat body covered in dull scales while his long neck ends in a fanged serpent's head. As he walks he seems to be leading a massive creature: a reptile with thick bony plates armoring its domelike back and a powerfully muscled tail ending in a bony club. The wand charge offer is very generous but not needed as mage armor is thankfully on my spell list (as is shield). I'll be happy to give you/party a 5 hour duration one when needed/wanted

Also great job on the knowledge checks I only have small odds on beating you on the nature small check, and that's assuming your check doesn't id the baddy.

As the shimmering energy surrounds Jane's form, Midri begins kicking herself for not putting Mage armor up on Xander the second they stepped thru the portal.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Jane recognizes the smaller being as a serpentfolk. A species long in decline (at least in your present), they are known for their veneration and pursuit of magic, and have evolved to channel some, mostly defensive, spell-like abilities, as well as a measure of Spell resistance and immunity to mind-affecting assaults. Serpentfolk's bites also carry an innate poison that can sap their enemies' strength And they are immune to poison themselves to match

The larger creature seems to resemble a primitive Ankylosaurus. Their most distinct feature is also their most dangerous one: a massive tail that hits hard and can Daze those it strikes with the force of the blow.

Both of the creatures appear to the elf to look different than examples she has seen, read of, or even hazily remembered. Still, any irregularities or physical quirks of the pair may need to wait until they stop attacking you for any closer examination.

To Jane

"I am fluent in either, much more so than Taldane, milady," Kasei answers in Minkaian. He seems eager to speak further, but then the beginning of the rituals interrupts, and drives all thoughts of conversation from his mind, supplanting it with awe in the magical might on display.

"I for one would wish to see Imperial Lung Wa at the height of its power," he mutters to Jane during a break in the speech.
