Maps and Handouts

When an ally of the Society reports that her sister's business is being harassed by the Aspis Consortium in the Varisian city of Korvosa, a team of Pathfinder agents is dispatched to the Green Market to assist. What they find there is more than simple strong-arming and intimidation, however. What mysterious forces bring the popular market its unlikely success, and can the PCs stop the Aspis Consortium from gaining control of what could become a lucrative resource for the rival organization?

They are not evil, but can be crit

Two of Roland's arrows pepper the southern mound, while the elemental slams into its counterpart. Splattered melon juice and corn husks splatter the ground around them.

And yes Ajax, due to the size of the creatures and the about waist-level height of the stalls and containers, you can fire over them.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

While I'm certainly not going to doubt you Rasamoro, I thought your flat-footed AC was 27. The first slam was only a 26.

Anail's advice falls on (literal) deaf ears , but the nagaji manages to slice away a key tendon of cucumber from the mound. In retaliation, it slams back at the oracle. The second connects but fails to get a firm grip on the lizard.

slam 1: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19 for damage: 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (5, 2) + 7 = 14

On the other side of the semi-cleared plaza, the other mound strikes at the earth elemental in front of it putting the full force of its mass into the blows.

slam 1: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17 for damage: 2d6 + 13 ⇒ (2, 5) + 13 = 20
slam 2: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18 for damage: 2d6 + 13 ⇒ (2, 5) + 13 = 20

Anail chugs a vial and watches as his arms elongate. Suddenly, the sylph finds himself struck by a pair of roots that whip out from the massive tree. He's yanked closer to the quickwood, which takes the opportunity to chomp at the investogator but the sylph manages to twist away.

root 1: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (20) + 14 = 34 for damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Bite: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (7) + 16 = 23 for damage: 2d6 + 11 ⇒ (4, 1) + 11 = 16

The tree then takes a bite at Rasamoro, just for good measure.

bite: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (6) + 16 = 22 for damage: 2d6 + 11 ⇒ (1, 1) + 11 = 13

Anail: I see your AC is a '31*' in the logline, but a 23 in your full profile. Can you clarify? This round it would only have mattered for the bite attack, but I just want to make sure I understand where the 8-point difference is coming from.

Zeeva looks at the commotion in horro. Wincing as Anail and Rasamoro are hit, she hesitates to close with the plant creatures. Hurrying towards Ajax, she taps him lightly on the shoulder. He feels a surge of confidence as she whispers "This, this is, I don't think this is the Aspis! Stop them before they hurt anyone, please!"

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

The root Pulls Theriahm forward, but doesn't continue to grapple him, more of a forceful yank. You can get the spell slot back if you wish. However...

One of Ajax's arrows and a all-out lunge from Anail thud into the massive tree. The combined blows seem to have been enough, as whatever force was animating its bark and branches fades and the uprooted trunk slumps down against one of the market's walls. The remaining shambling pile seems unaffected by the tree's defeat, but explodes into its component parts under a few smashes from the earth elemental.

COMBAT OVER!!
Rasamoro -30 hp, Theriahm -5hp, Anail -19 hp

With the bizarre plant constructs stopped, the Market remains still for a moment. Then, hoping the worst has past, Zeeva begins to rush forwards towards Theriahm and Rasamoro.

"Here, those don't look that bad." she says as she examines the pair's wounds, which begin to slightly fade. "I only wish I could say the same for the market. And the things being yelled out - strange, but ominous."

Looking around, Roland quickly locates the two surrendered mercenaries. They had both fled to a pair of nooks, taking cover from the haunt.

Zeeva accepts the half-elf's thanks with a wave of her hand, but looks concerned as she Anail and Ajax. "I don't know. Nothing like this has ever happened before, as long as I have been here! Sure, there's the occasional moved cart when I come in, or a weevil infestation unexpectedly cleared, but nothing as profound or malevolent as that haunting."

"And did none of you understand the words? My Shoanti is a bit rusty, but that voice was saying something about 'binging no war here' 'Shoanti land' and 'my people will be avenged'. I'm not an adventurer, just a merchant: do you know think this could happen again, threaten my clients and tenants?"

As she speaks, the six of you also notice that several of the vegetables and fruits that were once part of the shambling mounds seem to glow with a strange vibrancy that started when the creatures collapsed. An apple, two orange gourds, a banana, a carrot, and three pumpkin vines all catch your eye, as does a set of leaves on the tree that seem to shine like platinum and a branch on it the has hardened and oddly glows at one end.

Both of the mercs are still shaking and darting their eyes around the Market as Roland interrogates them.

"Yeah, that's rich. You think if Narris knew about all that swamp-thing dross he'd've gone down like he did?"
"Look, our employer's dead right there. You want us to bring a message back to his employers, done deal. Far as we see you Pathfinders and Zeeva can keep this crazy haunted place."

Listening to Ajax's musings, Zeeva furrows her brow and shakes her nose in concentration. Then her eyes light up. "OH! I don't know about hallowed ground - it's sadly the case that most of the city could fit that description - but there is a shaman who comes to the Market from time to time. Telmayne Fire-Eyes: she's a Shoanti of the old ways. Even lives over in the Skaldwood. A lovely woman, and now that I think about it, she did mention once or twice she feels a connection to her people when she drops by here. If you want to know more about the Shoanti, I'd talk to her!"

While this is going on, theriahm tries to grok the unusual remnants of the haunt-manifested plant constructs. the apple, gourds, and pumpkin vines all elude him, beyond the fact that the edibles are meant to be eaten and the vines could maybe be thrown in some way. The banana and carrot however radiate an aura almost identical to that of a potion of tree shape and rage respectively, while the strange branch on the tree can easily be broken off the be used as a +1 ghost touch/masterwork quarterstaff. The platinum-looking leaves detect faint transmutation magic, but otherwise seem to have improbably transfigured into actual platinum.

While all of you do this, around the market shopkeepers are already moving to right toppled stalls and shoppers are beginning to stand once more and begin to mill about the wares.

And amongst the surrendered Aspis agents, you can find 13 sleep arrows, 3 sets of +1 scale mail, and 3 cloaks of resistance +1. The dead caster wears a magic ring and carries a magic rod, magic wand, and three doses of a magic dust.
