The Prof nods approvingly at the work of his companions as they continue to upgrade the engine and chassis of the racer and decides to slide into the cockpit. His ratlike claws clattering over the keys of the control pad, he brings up a series of machine code on the ships small display console. "Hmmmm, I can't say I'm a...what do they call them, a whiz? No, not a whiz, no, no...although one must be proficient in all forms of technology to examine and...to ah, yes now if this calibration here was to be...yes an 8 here should change the power of this to be...yes, that should hopefully make some improvement."

Upgrade Attack: Computers: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Hoping to improve the ships attack accuracy, The Prof plays around with the ship's weaponry configurations, going on another stroll to check on other racers while the computer reboots.

"Oh my, if that attachment was any larger one wouldn't expect this thing to even get off the ground...what exactly does it do, I wonder? Perhaps it could...or...oh dear that would be most unorthodox."

Hoping to improve the ships attack accuracy, The Prof plays around with the ship's weaponry configurations, going on another stroll to check on other racers while the computer reboots.
But he manages to unalign the targeting computer and spends most of his time fixing what he damaged, but as he waits for the reboot to finish he notices something on the racer of a female ryphorian; it's some sort power converter which lets her greatly increase her speed for a short time in exchange for sacrificing her defenses (both kinetic and enrgy

Ondra tries to improve the steering capabilities of the racer but some of the glue used to stick the new components together leaks all over the drivers seat and a lot of time is spend trying to remove the glue. While he sends out crud to get a read on the competition.

Lola looks for more shielding and finds some reflective alluminum foil which looks like it could disrupt tightly focused beams and wraps it around important parts of the engine.

She goes of to talk to some of the pilots and manages to chat up one of them; the silver haired android, who introduces itself as Velocity. The android confesses that a very good pilot, they struggle with engineering and have never won a race—they have mostly sought entertainment by shooting at other racers during previous competitions.

Tally round 3:
+1 attack
+1 piloting
+2 EAC (2*) -> +4 EAC
+5 speed (3*) -> +15 speed
Install a basic kinetic weapon on the vehicle (imposes a –4 base Piloting penalty on a hit).

Info;
-The engine's of Lemgems racer tend to act a bit erratic..sometimes going faster (50% chance for +10 speed each round)
-The android's vehicle has a 10-foot penalty to speed, but has an additional basic kinetic weapon is installed.
-the androids has never won a race due to being a poor mechanic and spends most of the race shooting at other racers.

----

It's possible to convince Lemgem the gnome to overclock her engines (- which could result in them blowing up when pushed) (bluff) or possibly form an alliance during the race (diplomacy)

Just in case someone is unclear on what to do with this information, you can spend your action talking to Lemgem instead of improving your racer by making one of the skill checks mentioned to gain in game advantages. Which can be rather substantial (and it opens up the use of other skills in case someone lacks the needed skills mentioned so far).

The general info just provides general intel on the opposition and gives you possible clues on what to improve on your own racer

Still up for round 3 Chirrk, everyone up for round 4 (so Chirrk can go twice), also a reminder..round 4 is the last round

Scarab Sages

Also not sure if anyone noticed, but you figured out the competition has an extra kinetic weapon and you've upgrade your energy AC twice

"The racer seems to be coming along nicely..." Chirrk comments to no one in particular. After conversing with his comrades, he goes looking through the junkyard for some ceranium plating to improve the kinetic armor, and a PNT relay card to improve the piloting capabilities.

Mechanic to increase speed: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

Standing tall and stretching his back after working on the small machine he looks around the scene and people busily working upon all the devices in the area. "...my kind of people..." He verbalizes part of his thought stream before wandering off to talk mechanics to some of the others in the area.

Mechanic to find out about an unknown racer: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28

Scarab Sages

Chirrk walks around looking for some cernaium plating and manages to find both that and a PNT relay card which should help with steering the racer

His mask seems to inhibit the other racers wanting to spend time with him though

2 improvement, no info

Vargouzal tries to compensate for the added mass that the armor adds to the racer and finds some bigger thrusters.

As he walks past the other racers with his new find he glances at one of them and notices that the racer of an male damaya Lashunta has a lot of added armor...both deflection shields and shock absorbing gel padding (+4 to both EAC and KAC)

The Prof contemplates whether to try and upgrade their racer's attack or its armor. "Hmmm, the best form of defence is attack, but if that's so is it equally true that the best form of attack is defence? The inverse of the positive is the negative and therefore...if one were to just reverse the polarity."

In the end he tries to finish the job that he started in upgrading the ships targeting system but rather than going into the configurations, realises the problem was actually with the weapon's swiveling apparatus and it just needed some grease and a couple of replacement screws.

Onda uses more duct tape..because it keeps everything together and it works to keep the steering column flexible on one end.

-The Lashunta's racer has added armor (+4 to both EAC and KAC)

Scarab Sages

Lola's still up for her round, but so you can all start thinking on what to do I'll post the rules for the race:

The race uses a modified version of the vehicle chase rules, beginning on page 282 of the Starfinder Core Rulebook.

Each turn of the race includes two phases:
First, all the competitors fire their weapons at their chosen targets.
Second, all the pilots attempt Piloting checks to determine their positions in the race. Any number of players can each control a single weapon during the firing phase, whereas only one player can act during the piloting phase.

Laboni's racer starts with a energy weapon (-4 to piloting checks) and you added a kinetic weapon to that (-4 to piloting checks) so you can assign 2 gunners and 1 pilot.

So unless Lola last action changes that this means only 3 of you get to do anything during the race - all though you could take turns if it turns out some of you are tied at how good you are at something.

Second Seekers

Lola sees her fellow starfinders working on the racer and decides that there is nothing she can help with. Lola walks over to Lemgem and starts up a conversation.

"That really is a magnificent engine you have installed there. If my father could see that, I bet you would not be able to escape a long conversation about the fine details of engineering such a beauty. Maybe there is an opportunity after the race to exchange ideas?"

Lola keeps on talking and is trying to convince Lemgem that a mutual agreement of support during the race (especially against the android should he get frustrated and decide to attack) could be beneficial for both parties. As a carrot she mentions that a look under the hood of the clearly well upgraded Starfinder racer might not be out of the question.

Lola smiles. "What do you think?"

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Scarab Sages

Lemgem seems too distracted right now to to talk to Lola at length and quickly excuses herself

"Sorry, gotto run...I still have to prepa.." before she runs to far away to be heard any longer as she runs around a pile of debris and various useful engine parts.

If you'd made the diplomacy check one of you'd could have been able to play Lemgem in the upcoming race (using her stats)

Prior to the start of the race, the vehicles set up at the starting
line, and they will take off when given the signal. There are a total of 6 racers (Laboni - you guys, Lemgem - the gnome, Nyzin - female typhorian, Orsis - male damaya lashunta, Velocity - the android and Ratrod - Ysoky)

To keep it simple..other then the modifiers you've managed to scout (and those listed per pilot that you haven't )out all the racers look like they'd have roughly the same speed and armor and all have a kinetic weapon (so the android has 2) except Ratrods which has an energy weapon and seems to be a bit more sleek and faster

A light to the side starts to blink..followed by another light next to it...there is only 1 light next to that one, and it could start to blink at any time now.

Please list who's going to fulfill which function and then gunners can name and fire upon their targets, followed by the pilot making the steering check. I'l roll a wall of dice for the other racers and we'll see how round 2 will start

The Prof picks up the device to control the kinetic weapon he installed earlier. "Hmmm, ok how does this work now?" He tweeks the lever left, right, up and down, causing the turret to rotate erratically. "Ah, yes, elementary law of actions having reactions...now for the transference of matter." His claw hovers over the button. "What was it you said about that android...excessively aggressive towards other racers? Seems like a case of bad programming. Possibly wrong to hold it against him...although shoot or be shot, while not an official law of science still has its merits."

The ysoki professor sends off a shot towards the android.

Chirrk leans over to Onda and says, "I would focus on Ratrod, as he is the primary adversary to be defeated today, and his racer looks quite good..."

It looks like Onda and Chirrk have the same +2 ranged weapon bonus, so if he doesn't come up soon I'll take the shot for us. =)

Scarab Sages

I'm fine with you taking the shot if you want to take it if it's the same bonus. Onda can take the next one..seems fair to distribute the rolls so that everyone can contribute (if they want)

Onda is pretty lousy at both rolls relying solely on his +2 Dex bonus. While Onda would like to pilot if only to virtually feel the thrill of racing along at speeds he helped the drone attain. If there's someone better able to drive and/or fire he's willing to rest on his mechanical laurels. If needed to fill out a crew, he'll fire the energy (ion) weapon concentrating on his fellow ysoki knowing exactly how dangerous they can be.

Action if folks need him to fill the role:
ion weapon v ratrod: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 + 2 = 16

"Ja! Ja! Take zat! Pew! Pew! Pew!" Onda turns and sheepishly says "Ack, I get zo carried avay."

Lola is watching the race unfold. After a successful shot by the Professor, Lola cheers even louder and grabs the arm of the person next to her. "That's us! Way to go!" Lola realizes that she has grabbed another person's arm and lets go in an instant. "I...I am so sorry! But it is so exiting!"

Scarab Sages

After your kinetic weapons bounces harmlessly of it's target Onda tries to shoot Ratrods racer with your installed energy blaster to find out it's a rather easy to hit target..but then sparks of electricity starts to spark all over the racer and it seems to absorb the energy powering it's stabilizers.

Note that the basic stats of your racer include a -3 attack and a +2 to piloting..so with your modifiers you made to the racer you start with a -1 to hit and +4 piloting ..before adding your character modifiers

Android to hit Laboni KAC: 1d20 + 7 - 3 ⇒ (11) + 7 - 3 = 15 which hits your KAC of 12+2 = 14 for a -4 penalty on your piloting check
Android to hit Ratrod KAC: 1d20 + 7 - 3 ⇒ (11) + 7 - 3 = 15 which hits Ratrod for a -4 as well

Lemgem to hit Android KAC: 1d20 + 4 - 3 ⇒ (16) + 4 - 3 = 17 which also hits for a -4
Lahhunta to hit Lemgem KAC: 1d20 + 6 - 3 ⇒ (2) + 6 - 3 = 5 which goes wild
Ryphoid to hit Lahunta KAC: 1d20 + 8 - 3 ⇒ (20) + 8 - 3 = 25 which score a solid hit (crits don't seem to do extra) -4 to piloting

As Ratrod fires you see the furious focus in the ysoki's eyes as he pulls the trigger aiming for your racer..he seems to take this personally.

Ratrod vs Laboni EAC: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20 which causes your racer to take another -4 to piloting

So your are up for your piloting check with a -8 on your roll, a +4 from your racer..and Vargouzal's piloting modifier..if you make DC 16 you will move (40+20)*10 ..if you fail you go less, possible 0

Snorting as the racer is hit by the two blasts, Vargouzal concentrates on holding the racer steady. "So flimsy compared to tanks, but then so are opponents. Hah!". He presses the accelerator harder.

Piloting: 1d20 + 8 + 4 - 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 + 4 - 8 = 24

Scarab Sages

To bad that a natural 20 doesn't seem to do anything extra

Punching in the throttle Laboni's racer speeds forward quickly outpacing all the others.

Ratrod: 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 8 + 2 + 4 = 22
Android: 1d20 + 2 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 2 + 10 - 4 = 22
Lemgem: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 2 = 11 Random speed: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Lashunta: 1d20 + 6 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 6 + 2 - 4 = 20
Ryphnorian: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 4 + 2 = 17

All racers speed up their racers and as Lemgem tries to kick up some more speed out of her racers she has some trouble controlling the extra kick and crashes into some piles of junk on the side lines causing her to loose the extra speed she was building up to get back on track with the slower more weapons carrying androids vehicle just barely keeping in front of Lemgem

Position after round 1
Laboni 600
Ratrod 550
Lashunta 500
Ryphorian 500
Android 400
Lemgem 300

You are clearly in the lead by now...which the other competitors might not take kindly too.....

I did indeed do that, just to repeat what I wrote when Ratrod got hit;

As Chirrk watches the action, he talks with his group about the results of the first round of shooting. "Ratrod obviously has some special energy armor that actually helps him pilot his vehicle. Again, if folks want to leave it to Onda:
energy (ion) weapon v Lashunta: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 + 2 = 13

Scarab Sages

Onda fires the energy weapon on Laboni's racer at the heavily armored racer piloted by the Lashunta and his shot is deflected by the additional shielding the Lashunta installed on his racer

Both your weapons failed to hit, also I think Onda forgot the standard -3 to hit from your starting vehicle.

Ratrod with a sneer on his face fires on your vehicle again
To hit EAC: 1d20 + 8 - 3 ⇒ (11) + 8 - 3 = 16

And all other racers shoot at the vehicle which is in the lead at the moment right now as well..which just happens to be your vehicle

Android vs EAC: 1d20 + 7 - 3 ⇒ (5) + 7 - 3 = 9
Android vs KAC: 1d20 + 7 - 3 ⇒ (17) + 7 - 3 = 21

Lemgem to hit KAC: 1d20 + 4 - 3 ⇒ (14) + 4 - 3 = 15
Lashunta to KAC: 1d20 + 6 - 3 ⇒ (12) + 6 - 3 = 15
Ryphoid to hit KAC: 1d20 + 8 - 3 ⇒ (10) + 8 - 3 = 15

Your vehicle is being peppered with energy beams and bullets and it banged left and right making it very hard to fly straight

Your start armor = EAC 10; KAC 12 and you gained +4 EAC and +2 KAc for a total of 14 to both..so you get hit 5 times and missed once ..which means a -20 to your piloting check this round

Vargouzal snarls in frustration as hit after hit lands on the small craft. "I think we weigh nearly a pound more from shots embedded in our hull!" he cries as he tries to keep everything upright.

Piloting: 1d20 + 8 + 4 - 20 ⇒ (19) + 8 + 4 - 20 = 11

Scarab Sages

Even after being bashed around the race track by getting multiple hits Varzougzal is almost able to keep the racer on track, the racer does smashed into a pile of rubble and get's send into a tail spin but manages to even out in the end before crashing into something and getting stuck.

Ratrod: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 2 = 17
Android: 1d20 + 2 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 2 + 10 = 30
Lemgem: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 4 + 2 = 24 Random speed: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Lashunta: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 2 = 13
Ryphnorian: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 4 + 2 = 25

Ratrod let's out a snarl as he passes your racer and takes the lead

The android has no troubles catching up

Lemgem, the gnome cackles with glee as she punches the throttle and inject some more nitro into the engine systems

The Lashunta is a bit surprised as Lemgem takes of and almost bumps into him behind and needs to swirve to avoid getting hit and looses some speed

The Ryphorian diverts all power from her armor and shield into her engine in an attempt to catch up.
Just to make sure you get what I mean with the fluff...extra speed, but significant lower EAC and KAC for a round

Position after round 2
Laboni 600 + half speed => 300 = 900
Ratrod 550 +550 = 1100
Lashunta 500 + 250 = 750
Ryphorian 500 +500+200 = 1200
Android 400 + 400 = 800
Lemgem 300 +500+100 = 1000

With the exception of the slow moving racer from the android and the Lashunta all other racers pass your vehicle, the Ryphorian's gamble of lowering shields for greater speed seem to pay off for now as she takes the lead.

"Oh dear!" The Prof exclaims, "It doesn't quite seem fair that everyone would pick on our racer like that, but I guess we can't really blame them...nor should they blame me for this."

Hoping that he had finally figured out the controls for the weapon, Lenik tries pushing the big red button marked 'FIRE' instead of the little black one on the side that said 'ON' & 'OFF'.

Don't know if that helps us or not for that last round...

Chirrk asks Onda for the energy weapon controls. "Mind if I try my hands at this?" He studies the controls for a second, looks down the track at the other racers, chooses his target, and presses the firing button..."I prefer hand-to-hand combat, but I have studied gunplay and even done some hunting in my youth!" he exclaims proudly.

The scenario mentions a modified version of the rules, so I think they just left those out to keep it a bit simpler. It's not under the listed rules for how this race works in this scenario (and to be honest I didn't look beyond the rules listed in the scenario)

Scarab Sages

Lenik fires the kinetic weapon at Ratrod's racer but it bounces off the armored shield protection it's engine.

Chirrk remote fires the energy gun at the Ryphorian's vehicle and he easily manages to score a hit..it guts right through the air unhindered by anything slowing it down.

Ratrod squints as he focuses his sight on your vehicle and let's his gun do the talking

Ratrod to hit EAC: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 who manages to get a lucky shot in (-4 to piloting)

The other racers take advantage of the Ryphorians lowered defenses and poor their weapons into his racer

Android vs EAC: 1d20 + 7 - 3 ⇒ (16) + 7 - 3 = 20
Android vs KAC: 1d20 + 7 - 3 ⇒ (5) + 7 - 3 = 9

Lemgem to hit KAC: 1d20 + 4 - 3 ⇒ (9) + 4 - 3 = 10
Lashunta to KAC: 1d20 + 6 - 3 ⇒ (1) + 6 - 3 = 4

While the Lashunta seems to be distracted all other shots mange to find their targets sending the Ryphorians vehicle into a spin

(-4*4 = -16 penalty to piloting check)

While the Ryphoirian tries to hit the one closest to him, which is Lemgem
Ryphoid to hit KAC: 1d20 + 8 - 3 ⇒ (15) + 8 - 3 = 20 -4

As your vehicle picks up speed and takes of through an opening forming as the Ryphorians speeder is pelted left and right.

Ryphnorian: 1d20 + 4 + 2 - 16 ⇒ (12) + 4 + 2 - 16 = 2

Ratrod seems to have his tail caught in the throttle and spends Precious seconds getting it untangled allowing you to overtake his racer and even taking the lead once more.

The other racers have various problems of their own slowing down their progress a bit with the ryphorian being in so much trouble that it plows into a pile of rubber tires on the sidelines and needs to spend all it's time getting back on track as almost everyone passes him and finally being able to catch up to the steadily progressing android.

Position after round 3
Laboni 600 + half speed 300 +600 = 1500
Ratrod 550 +550 + half speed 275 = 1375
Lashunta 500 + 250 +250 = 1000
Ryphorian 500 +500+200 +0 = 1200

Still keeping his targets set on his fellow Ysoki, The Prof again tries to shoot at Ratrod with the kinetic weapon.

"Ahem...let me try this again. I'm sure I installed the weapon correctly, but oh dear I hope I didn't forget to load the bullets!"

Kinetic Weapon v. Ratrod:: 1d20 + 3 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 3 + 2 - 2 = 17

The Prof again tries to shoot at Ratrod with the kinetic weapon and it seems practice makes perfect as a bullet leaves a nice round hole in Ratrod's racers armored plating and some smoke can be seen rising from the hole..that's sure to effect his maneuverability for a bit.

Ratrod aims his laser at your racer once more and slowly pulls the trigger as his aiming device get's a target lock on your racer

Ratrod vs your EAC: 1d20 + 8 - 3 ⇒ (19) + 8 - 3 = 24 Seems you are right, sorry about that...stats blocks are all over the place

And everyone else also takes shots at you since you once again have taken the lead

Android vs EAC: 1d20 + 7 - 3 ⇒ (20) + 7 - 3 = 24
Android vs KAC: 1d20 + 7 - 3 ⇒ (11) + 7 - 3 = 15

Then he lets go a roar of frustration as the craft tumbles into a pile of junk.
