Map/Handouts

For years a Pathfinder team has surveyed Qadira’s Zho Mountains in an attempt to reconcile its twisting valleys with a series of old maps recovered years ago on the Silken Way. When the team disappears soon after reporting a strange illusory effect in a mountain pass, the Society sends the PCs—funded by an unusual benefactor—to uncover whatever is hidden in those peaks and rescue the agents.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Venture-Captain Esmayl ibn Qaradi sits behind his immaculately clean desk with his head in his hands as you enter his office in the Pathfinder Lodge in Katheer. Seeing you come in, the officer lets out a deep sigh, takes a breath, and rises to address his guests.

The venture-captain takes a few steps toward a map of Qadira hanging from his wall. “Six years ago, a team of Pathfinders received a map of an unexplored area in the Zho Mountains, and ever since they have stayed busy surveying the region and sending me updates. Until recently, they had uncovered only a few dozen small sites and a plethora of new plant and animal species, but their most recent update referenced a large illusory barrier. Since then we have not heard from them, and I believe they found something dangerous beyond."

“I ask that you use what notes I have on file to track down these agents and make sure they return safely. Investigating the nature of this illusory...field, barrier, shield... is secondary at best." Esmayl pauses for a moment before continuing. “If you have any questions, I shall answer them as best I can, though most of what the Society knows about the mountains is in the logbooks of those agents."

The VC looks square at you and continues with a slightly pained expression on his face.
“I will be hones: originally, I wasn’t planning on sending a new team back out to the Zho Mountains. The risk of losing another group is, frankly, too high. If that weren’t enough of a reason, the Society’s assault on the Worldwound has left the lodge’s coffers much lighter — too light to fund another expedition into dangerous territory so soon. However, following some conversations with fellow agents, I am reminded that all Pathfinders must come home— no matter the cost, no matter the danger. The lessons of the Shadow Lodge still resonate.”

He nods toward a Pathfinder who stands silently in the corner. “In fact, the recent disappearance in the Zho Mountains has brought a surge of monetary support from the onetime disciples of Grandmaster Torch. It was enough to finance your voyage here, and I would happily provide you the remainder if you succeed.”

Lem nods his head in respect to Esmayl, then asks
"When was their last communication? How long have they been missing? Is there anything in particular we should be getting to prepare for this journey? Are the Zho Mountains cold? Will be journeying at high altitudes? Who was on the team that went missing? Are there sketches or detailed descriptions of the missing pathfinders?"

Then Lem bows deeply to the pathfinder in the corner.
"And thank you for your generous donation. It warms my heart to know that wherever our paths may wind, the Society stands together. Perhaps you could let us know what inspired your generosity? Was there a close comrade of yours that was part of the expedition? Or is there something in particular that you were hoping we'd find?"

Suddenly, Lem selfconsciously scratches his head and says, "Sorry for prattling on. When my curiosity peaks, I do get a little chatty..."

After a brief chuckle, Lem looks expectantly at the mysterious pathfinder and the Venture Captain.

The barbarian just smiles."I do plan to return home!" Amiri strokes the hilt of her blade. "What can you tell us more of this mountain range?"

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

The other Pathfinder reaches into a sack beside him and pulls out an array of vials.

"In addition to a stipend for your expedition, I and my colleagues have manage to procure these, should they help you in your mission to find and recover the missing Pathfinders. While we understand that Grandmaster Torch's personal actions may be...controversial, there are those of us who still believe in his stated cause: to assit hthe 'common Pathfinder when disaster strikes while holding the Decimverate and those of influence accountable to the costs of their actions."

The ex-Sahdow Lodge agent provides you with a potion of remove curse, a potion of cure serious wounds, six potions of endure elements, and 2 doses of oil of taggit

The Venture Captian coughs as you scan to assorted potions. "Yes, yes. We all appreciate you group's concerns. Regarding the mountains themselves," he says, looking at Lem and Neha, "Few have been able to ever truly settle the Zho. It is a rough terrain, home to feral beasts and draconic monsters who lair within it. Those who try either never return or return badly hurt and scarred forever. I would expect the worst. Still, Qadiran mages have long practiced elemental magic, so conjured genies and geniekin are relatively common in the region. Rumors persist that many of that sort have gravitated toward settlements in the Zho Mountains, though nobody seems able to confirm this rumor."

He will also give you a description of the missing Pathfinders: the dwarven cleric of Angradd, Ulark, the half-elf detective, Barnaby and the human witch, Vetis.

Talevia had been sitting in silence, listening to the briefing. Finding missing Pathfinder agents was a worthy task, but she did have some concerns. Finding these agents would be challenging without someone who could track. They would need some clues to find their way first.

"What sort of...things...did the team find during their explorations, beyond the unusual plants and animals? Perhaps their findings might provide us with some clues regarding their disappearance."

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Venture Captain Esmayl frowns. "It certainly would, but unfortunately none of their reports or correspondence indicated anything about any danger or threat that could explain their vanishing. Frankly I was beginning to consider the project a disappointment. The map the Society received six years ago corresponded with rumors of a great treasure that was said to lie hidden in the Zho Mountains. The mountains are also ill documented, making them a natural subject for Pathfinder investigation."

He sighs. "There documentation part has been quite extensive I will admit, but none of the treasure rumors have ever been substantiated. It's possible this barrier hidden from sight by magic is hiding just that sort of ruin or cavern, but we lost contact with the three agents almost immediately after they first reported it."

While you have some information already, Knowledge Geography could potentially tell you a bit more about the mountains themselves.

Lem recalls that those mountains sure are mountains. Tall peaks, ridges and valleys, the whole deal.

Preparations made and ready for the journey, another agent is waiting for you leading a dozen horses and wearing a wayfinder as you approach the Lodge's stables. "These animals should treat you right." he says. "Good luck my friends. The Shadow Lodge's better dreams live in people like you."

True to his claim, the pack animals are quite reliable, and their bags are already stocked with some rations and basic camping supplies. Trekking from Katheer into the foothills of the Zho Mountains is fairly uneventful: just under a week of follow rivers and crossing scrubland and light desert. Finally, the mountain range looms before you, dominated by a pair of massive peaks.

As you begin to enter the mountains themselves, the notes and maps sent back from the first Pathfinder team provide a guide. However, the tough terrain makes finding their exact trail more difficult, as the winds seem to have blasted away several markers and the weeks passed since their disappearance have left their trail cold.

I need a Perception or Survival check from each of you. The map of this region August recovered while preventing Murder on the Silken Caravan will help you with this (I'll factor it on my end)

Herosim is good, but Lem suspects that it may be a longer ongoing effort to track the other Pathfinders' trail than his lungs can take.

Despite the unfamiliar and moderately inhospitable terrain, following the map of the Silken Way leads you carefully but surely down a winding trail through the lower peaks. As you walk dozens of miles and slowly climb higher above the desert plains, your keen eyes spot the occasional marker that reassures you. A torn scrap of a Pathfinder Chronicle here. A crudely whittled shrine to Angradd there. A footprint still visible in a depression just off the path.

Eventually, signs of the first group's progress vanishes however as you enter into an wide alpine meadow filled with scrub brush and dry grasses clinging to thin soil. A mile or so across, this clearing ends in a steep mountain slope with no clear method to easily ascend. It's a dead end.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

As the party stops to take a breath and mills about the open meadow, several of the Pathfinders enjoy the secluded cove as a break from the rugged climb. Neha and August however, blinks as they look around. The flora doesn’t quite match the descriptions found in the passed-on journals, and the skyline seems slightly off. As their concerns grows, the ened of the valley begins to flicker before them – it’s an illusion!!!

The monk and druid alert the rest of you to this fact as much of the plant life gradually fades into transparent shadows, and the cliffs at the far end of the vale part to reveal a much larger valley beyond. In the distance, you see a large wall encircles a humble town of stone structures. An immense castle built of bronze bricks towers over the settlement from its perch just above the base of a nearby mountain. Advancing and descending into this hidden valley, you head towards a large gate built into a section of the thick wall. As you approach, two red-skinned humanoid figures call out in a crackling tongue.

Ignan:
”Halt! State your business in Crystalcrag!”

Both beings are decked in fine chain shirts and have a sharp scimitar at their side. Small horns poke out from their foreheads and curve back towards their hair, which glows and shimmers like dancing flames.

{Ignan} "That's not that surprising. The mountains are very dangerous, especially for outsiders. That's why Crystalcrag must remain vigilant, and ordered."

"If you need to spend the night, you can secure lodgings inside. But be warned: do not cause trouble. Secure lodgings inside, avoid any mischief, and respect curfew after sundown. For context, its early-mid morning now. Then you can be on your way in the morning."

With a nod to his fellow, silent partner, the ifrit guard moves to one of the wall's massive doors and begins pulling. With a grinding sound, the gate swings open to reveal a large town beyond, with many simple stone buildings crowding squares and streets. A massive bronze castle looms large over the city at the opposite end.

Walking through the gate and into the town of Crystalcrag, you notice that while there are several other ifrits roaming the streets, they are far outnumbered by a different type of creature. Shorter and stockier the flaming genikin, creatures with gray, brown, and even dull purple skin – all dull colors – move about the town in groups. The people walk slowly and deliberately from one place to another, talking amongst themselves in quiet tones.

These are Oreads, earth-aligned geneikin.

As you move about you notice that the oreads seem to give the ifrits a wider berth in the street, who in turn stride confidently on their way sometimes forcing oreads to hurry out of their path. Most of the ifrit have weapons sheathed at their sides, though the oreads Several eyes stare out at you from the town’s windows and doorways and you notice many of the oreads stealing shy curious glances at you and murmuring amongst themselves. None move to speak with you however, until you hear a voice in accented common rasp out from you left.

”Newcomers! It is becoming a deluge lately.” You see an aging oread, his skin crisscrossed with cracks that cover his skin like spiderwebs, stand from his seat in front of a large crystalline state and walk towards you. ”I am Eurdan Stonemantle, the remaining Councilor of Crystalcrag. Come. I expect you could use a rest somewhere more quiet.” He turns and heads towards a nearby building, occasionally looking back to see if you follow.
