Kronas smiles and waves affably when Seldiir says his name, and he quickly sheathes his sword so that he doesn't scare the newcomers. He nods when White declares their intention to help, and adds "Yes, we're super helpful, and if there's any trouble..."

He retrieves his most treasured possession from his pack, a Pathfinder Society flag, and unfurls it to display a large Glyph of the Open Road embroidered in white on a royal blue background. What was once an ordinary flag has been lovingly embellished over the years into something quite spectacular. Little dark blue pictographs depicting Kronas' adventures with the Society have been embroidered in seemingly random, yet aesthetically pleasing spots all around the main image. He waves it around a few times, proudly trying out the new gold fringing he had sewn around the edge during the boat trip up to Rosehaven. The pole itself hasn't been left out, and in what is likely Luna's contribution, it has colourful feathers, assorted beads, and platted leather tassels all over it.

"I'll wave my flag, and we'll look so heroic that monsters will run away, and never return!" Kronas continues with a smile that gets even wider when he notices Luna jumping up and down in the background. She knows from all of Kronas' stories about the Society that something heroic is about to go down, and she doesn't want to miss it.

I don't know if I've mentioned it yet, but Kronas has the flagbearer feat. As such, he will be waving a flag whenever he doesn't have to hide his affiliation with the Pathfinders, giving himself and all other Pathfinders within 30' a +1 morale bonus to hit and damage rolls (which stack with Inspire Courage) and a +1 morale bonus to saves vs. Charm and Fear effects (which doesn't stack). So I'm hoping to give everyone a +2 to hit and damage for most melee combat.

"I, uh...right, okay," the constable manages, distractedly running one hand through her hair. She offers the other hand for a shake. "Elise Tivareau, constable. And you're Pathfinders? Huh, I'd thought that your people got run out of Galt on a rail years ago. But that's not important right now and if you're willing to help then you folks can follow me out to Elm's house."

Lebraerio:

You get the distinct impression that the good constable is feeling very much out of her depth by having a possible murder investigation on her hands. She's definitely happy to have some help right now.

"They seem like they've got good heads on their shoulders," Bertinard advises. "Go and see to poor Elm. I'll...I'll tell the others what's happened while they're having storytime for the children. May Shelyn watch over you all." With a heavy sigh, he turns and slowly makes his way back towards the square, the dread of having to announce Elm's death clearly weighing him down like a millstone around his neck.

Elise turns to the group and nods curtly. "Alright then, you're with me. All of us strolling out to Elm's is going to cause a stir if we go through the square so we'll cut around through the fields for a few minutes and then jump back onto the road. Got it? Let's go."

More to follow...

Season of Ghosts

Constable Tivareau leads you all out of the flower garden and around behind the ruined tower, skirting through the fields near the edge of Rosehaven before returning to the small dirt road that leads out to where Elm lives. After a short walk, you see a small, one-room stone house just up the road, surrounded on several sides by an enormous pumpkin patch. Even with several carts of pumpkins having been harvested for the carving, many, many more still remain, a carpet of yellow and orange glowing in the afternoon sun. As you all get closer, you see that the door to the house is standing open - and then a chill when you spot what looks to be a hand and part of an arm on the ground, protruding from the open door.

"Okay...Adrien, Emile, I want you to stand watch out here, one on each side of the house. Make sure nothing gets up here without us knowing about it - person, animal, anything," Constable Tivareau says softly. "You lot, come with me. We need to have a look inside."

Adrien and Emile look at each other and nod, gripping their swords as they fan out. Adrien moves to stand watch near the house's front door, while Emile cautiously circles around to the back. He peers around the corner of the house for a moment and then turns to look back at the constable, giving a thumbs-up signal to indicate that the rear of the house seems safe for the moment.

The rest of you follow the constable to the front door. The interior of the house is shrouded mostly in darkness, the only light streaming in from a window at the back and from the open door. Now that you're closer you can see that the body of a middle-aged man lies face-down just inside the doorway of the house, arm outstretched as if he'd been trying to crawl outside - and away - from something or someone. Vines encircle his arms and legs and one particularly large vine is wrapped around his head, holding his jaw open in a silent scream.

"Gods almighty..." the constable whispers as the blood drains away from her face.

Kronas follows Constable Tivareau wordlessly down the path, his flag fluttering in the wind the whole time. He stares in wonder at the huge pumpkin patch, both wishing he could grow things half as well, and wondering why anyone would want to hurt someone who could do something so magnificent.

Kronas gulps as he gets closer to the dead man, disturbed by the manner of his death Poor Elm, he must have been terrified! Was he crawling away from the vines or something el- He starts when Seldiir asks for light "Oh, yes... Of course, just a sec..." He whispers a few words and traces an arcane symbol in the air, casting dancing lights and illuminating the house with four orbs of glowing light. Knowing that there are people better qualified then him to investigate the body, Kronas instead decides to make sure everyone is safe "I'll check if the coast is clear..." He whispers as he glances around at the surrounding fields, and pulls out a fancy looking polished silver wayfinder*.

"Wh-! Yes...yes, you're right," Constable Tivareau nods at White Feather, swallowing hard and then taking a deep breath. "Okay. Okay."

She carefully kneels down to get a better look at the body, reaching out to cautiously touch some of the vines that encircle one of Elm's legs. It doesn't move. "That part-way answers your question," she says as she glances up at Seldiir. "It might've been a weapon but it's not an enemy. If it were an enemy, it doesn't seem to be anymore." She frowns. "Any of you folks know anything about healing? Might help if we could figure out how long he's been like this."

Lebraerio also gives the body a closer inspection and the constable nods as his eyes are immediately drawn to the same things that hers were. "You see it too? Any idea what could've done this?"

Lebraerio:

Technically it's supposed to be a Heal check for this but I would think all of these would be pretty obvious to anyone that cares to look at the body!

It's immediately obvious that Elm's body is covered with a variety of wounds. Burns, multiple bruises, and rows of small puncture marks that were likely made by something with a particularly wide, gaping maw. The nature of the wounds combined with the vines wrapped around Elm's body begins to paint a frightening picture, bringing to mind a story you'd once heard about animate plants, disguising themselves as garden-variety crops.

While Lebraerio and Constable Tivareau examine Elm's body, the rest of you fan out and begin searching the house and grounds around it. On the outside, Kronas joins Adrien and Emile as they keep watch. The gnome's keen eyes scan the area around the house and surrounding fields but see nothing that seems out of place. The needle of his wayfinder remains still, confirmation that whatever wickedness it was that visited Elm did not decide to stick around once it had finished with him.

Meanwhile, White Feather, Kara, and Seldiir cautiously step inside the small house now that they have some light to see by. As they look around, it becomes apparent that Elm preferred to live simply and perhaps more closely to nature than most. The single-room house contains a bed, a desk, a table and two chairs, a small chest of clothes, a shelf bearing foodstuffs and cooking supplies, and a small fireplace. Though the house is uncluttered it is rather dirty, with dirt and bits of leaves covering the floor. White Feather spots two pieces of paper lying on the nearby desk. One shows a map of Rosehaven and the outlying lands, with Xs marking 10 different locations. The second piece of paper is a rather cryptic note.

Please see Slide #4 for the note.

Note - Linguistics or Spellcraft (DC 14) *or* Int (DC 18):

After some study, you realize that the cryptic message scribbled here seems to be a transcript of a conversation Elm must have had with something that wasn't human. Given what you know of Elm's talents and the note's contents, it seems likely that it might have been a Speak with Plants spell.

You also notice that the number of 'X's on the map coincide with the number of times that the word 'whisperwort' is underlined in the note.

Note - Kn. Nature (DC 14):

You know that 'whisperwort' is a colloquial term for a species of peat moss, known for it's distinctive red color.

Map - Kn. Geography (DC 10) *or* Wisdom (DC 16):

The Xs on the map surround Rosehaven but don't seem to form a discernible pattern.

If you beat the above check by 5+, read the following spoiler:

Spoiler:

Or do they? Upon closer study you realize that the Xs actually form a spiral pattern that radiates outward from one of the farms just east of the village center.

Elm must have been talking to something weird, and this is the transcript..." A thought suddenly strikes him and he seems fit to burst "Oh, oh, Elm was a druid!!! If whisperwort is a red moss..." "Wait, what? Okay, slow down a moment," the constable says as the group all begin talking at once over the peculiar pieces of paper they'd found. She spreads the two pieces out on the table. "Walk me through these papers - what do they mean?"

As the group explain what they've found and point out the map with the spiral Xs, Constable Tivareau's eyes widen with recognition - and fear. "Bertinard. That's Bertinard's home." She looks up. "I'm still not entirely sure of what's going on but I do know that we need to go. Now."

Kronas gasps "But what if the 'X's aren't spiralling out? What if they're actually spiralling in? He could be in real danger!" "Okay - Adrien, Emile, I want you two to stand watch here, make sure no one comes up here until we've had a chance to see to Elm properly," Constable Tivareau calls out, her voice a little stronger, a little more confident now that she has some direction. "The rest you, you're with me. When we get back to town I want all of you to head to Bertinard's home while I gather some more men to set up guard around the perimeter."

Both Adrien and Emile look at each other nervously but then nod. "Right, we'll take care of things here," Adrien responds as Emile steps inside the house. "You all go make sure Bertinard's alright, you hear?"

You all turn and hurry after Constable Tivareau as she heads back down the road towards Rosehaven. A couple of you happen to glance over your shoulders as you go and see Emile come out of the house and carefully lay a quilt over Elm's still form as Adrien begins making a circuit around the perimeter of the little stone house.
______

Now thoroughly alarmed, the constable leads you all at a half-jog, half-run back into Rosehaven. Although it didn't seem as though you'd been very long at Elm's the days have been growing ever shorter and the sun is already beginning its descent over the horizon, casting an eerie orange glow over the village square. Everything is just as you left it, though the pumpkin-carving seems to be finished for now and most of the residents are gathered for storytime. You catch snippets of the tale as you maneuver your way around the edge of the square:

"...and the hunter followed the tracks out to the middle of the lake, but there they disappeared. At first, he thought that maybe Roga had fallen through the ice but there wasn't a hole to be seen. Then, he had an odd thought - that maybe something had pulled him off of the ice and into the sky..."

The children are enraptured with the story and pay the group no mind as they move through the square. However, several of the adults fidget nervously and you notice that they seem to press a little more tightly together. Some of them look up at Constable Tivareau with worry in their eyes while others, such as Armeline, narrow their eyes suspiciously at the group of strangers in their midst.

"Okay, Bertinard's home lies just to the east of the village center," the constable whispers to you softly. "I don't see him out here so he's either at home or in the temple. Go to his home, I'll gather some men to check the temple and then follow behind you."

Although there are some suspicious looks that follow the group as they make for Bertinard's home, there are thankfully others that seem to view the group more kindly. Kronas manages to catch Katriane's eye and she offers a weak smile and a nod as she mouths, "Be careful!" And as they pass by the Silver Flute, Seldiir and Lebraerio both spot Ivy standing just outside the door so she can listen to the story but also keep an eye on her inn. "Whoever or whatever done poor Elm in, I know it wasn't you or your friends," Ivy whispers, though she doesn't take her eyes off the storyteller. "I just hope you and Elise can get to the bottom of it before someone else gets hurt."

As you head out of the village square and down another little dirt road, the voice of the storyteller drifts after you:

"...then he heard Roga's voice again. It was coming from somewhere above, screaming, 'Oh my fiery feet! My burning feet of fire!'...but there was nothing to be seen..."

"Oh! What brings you folks here?" he asks, looking surprised. "I figured you'd all be quite a while out at Elm's with the constable." He hurries back to the gate and opens it for the group. Kronas nods along to Seldiir, but is unable to stay as calm as Lebraerio "Yes, yes, your house might be the centre of some great plant conspiracy! Elm was questioning the whisperwort and they all said the same troubling things about a tightening darkness and life turning to soil." He glances about suspiciously at Bertinard's garden "I think the plants killed Elm because he was getting too close to the truth, and his map shows whisperwort spiralling towards your house! Please, we must look around your garden and house properly, to make sure you're safe."

Bertinard falls into a shocked silence. A slight breeze rustles through the small garden, making the flowers (such a variety!) bob and dance in the wind. Under other circumstances it would be a pleasant sight, imagining the flowers to perhaps be nodding 'Hello! Hello!' But now they seem dark and foreboding, as if they're saying, 'Stay away! Stay away!'

Or maybe, 'Come closer! Come closer!'

"Okay," he finally nods. "I believe you and I believe in Elm - he was an odd duck but he wasn't stupid. Check the garden, check the house, do whatever you need to do," he says, stepping aside to let you through the gate. "As for the whisperwort...huh. Now that you mention it, no, I don't think I'd seen it near the house until just this year."

He looks to the group. "What do you need me to do while you look around?"

Just to be on the safe side, does anyone have ranks in sense motive?

Seldiir shrugs, "You're a priest, correct? Can you cast any spells which sense magic, or evil?"

Then he looks around, "What do we think, search outside first? It could be something small that we're looking for? I don't know..."

Kronas has always been far too trusting, -1 sense motive ;)

Kronas unclips his wayfinder and approaches the garden. "Well, if it's plants we're after, I think we should start out here..." He points accusingly at a pretty patch of orange roses, and asks "Do those flowers look suspicious to you?" He bounces over to the flowers in question, and spends a long moment staring at them with narrowed eyes. "Mmm, oh, oh that's a good idea Seldiir!" Kronas turns towards Bertinard "I know some magic, but I bet you know much better stuff for finding murderous magnolia. I mean you're obviously real good with flowers, do any of them look odd to you?"

Kronas then starts studying the garden thoroughly, poking at a random flower every now and then, and periodically looking at his compass.

Bertinard cautiously follows behind Kronas as he braves the dangers of the small garden. "Well, no, not that I can tell," he admits, peering over the gnome's shoulder at the small rosebush. Upon closer inspection, they thankfully don't appear to be particularly murderous. "I've been told that I've got a green thumb but Elm would've known more about wild and exotic plants than I would," he adds with a helpless shrug.

As Kronas activates his wayfinder and begins scanning around, he at first doesn't see anything. But as he's looking, he notices the needle start to quiver ever so slightly. Then a little more. And a little more. All at once, the needle spins around crazily and for a moment Kronas thinks that the device might've actually broken - but then it stops. The needle points not towards anything in the garden or out on the nearby road, but towards the house itself.

It's at this moment that everyone realizes that the small breeze has died and the air has grown quiet and still, with nary a bird nor insect to be heard.

Then the silence is shattered by the sound of breaking glass.

Kronas stares at the needle as it starts to spin, and he experiences a whole range of emotions in just moments. First he's excited that the gift he received from a nice lady from the Silver Crusade actually works how she said it would; then he's worried that he might have used it wrong and broken it; and finally, when the needle settles down, he's shocked to see where it points. He looks at the door as the eery silence descends. "There's something evil insi-" Kronas almost jumps out of his skin when the glass breaks, the sound seemingly ten times louder after the moment of stillness. He quickly clips his wayfinder back onto his belt and it bursts into light. He then draws his sword and steps closer to the door "You should stay out here Bertinard, we won't let whatever's inside hurt anyone else, l promise!"

From within the house the group can hear the tinkling of glass as a few tenacious shards finally give up the ghost and drop to the floor, as well as a slight scuffling and scraping sound - perhaps the movement of furniture. Kronas, Kara, and Seldiir quickly set up position to cover the door and some of the front windows, ready to pounce should anything come crashing through.

White Feather and Lebraerio, feeling bolder, each decide to risk taking a peek through one of the windows. Lebraerio skulks around the corner, having noticed a window on the side of the house as the group had approached the gate while White Feather steps up to peer in through the window next to the front door.

Lebraerio:

The interior of the house is unlit but with what's left of the evening sun you're just able to discern that you're looking into what seems to be a combination sitting room and kitchen, with a small table and pair of chairs as well as a fireplace and larger dining table on the opposite side of the room.

But what catches your eye is that something appears to be floating or perhaps hovering just in front of the unlit fireplace. The roundish shape and odd contours of it bring to mind...pumpkins.

On the nearby wall, just next to the front door, you spot a window and you see White Feather step up to peer through it. Out of the corner of your eye you spot sudden movement and a flash of light, as something that had been standing in the corner between the two windows steps directly in front of the other window to gaze back at White Feather! You see a carved pumpkin, sitting atop a writhing mass of thick, ropey vines, light flickering from within its crudely carved face - a horrific sight that chills you to your very core.

There are two different sorts of foes here but I'm assuming you're asking about the most obvious threat :)
______

Lebraerio pieces together what he sees with what the group found earlier in Elm's home and realizes that he knows exactly what this thing is - it's a Jack-o'-Lantern, a semi-intelligent plant spawned by fell magic and driven by a desire to burn and consume living flesh! They can spew fire from their mouths as well as ensnare prey with their vines. And even in death they are deadly, able to explode moments after being felled -they're quite resistant to fire attacks as a result. Another thing Lebraerio knows is that sometimes such creatures may grow from the ground where a particularly evil witch or fey has been buried, though such a thing may take decades.

With a warning shout to the others, he races back around the corner to come to the defense of White Feather and the rest of the group. Good thing too, because his shout is immediately followed by more shattering glass as what look to be two floating pumpkins come crashing through nearby windows and another, taller creature with a pumpkin head and vines for a body shatters the window directly in front of White Feather, snapping at him with a mouth full of jagged teeth and reaching for him with thick vines!

Bite vs. White Feather: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Slam vs. White Feather: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23

Slam Confirm?: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

The Jack-o'-Lantern's teeth snap nothing but empty air as the Shoanti manages to duck out of the way, but that opens him up to a vicious slam from the mass of vines that reach through the shattered window! As soon as they make contact with White Feather's skin, they attempt to twist themselves around him!

White Feather, DC 14 Reflex save or be entangled for 2d4 ⇒ (3, 1) = 4 rounds. Additionally, Seldiir, and Kronas - please make a DC 13 Will save as the Jack-o'-Latern's unnatural aura washes over you.

Ready to help, Lebraerio slashes at the Jack-o'-Lantern's thick vines to try and help his companion and manages to slice through a particularly large vine! The horrible creature emits an inhuman shriek of rage and pain, but does not fall.

One of the floating pumpkins bobs in the air as it approaches Kronas, who recognizes it - it's the very Pumpking he carved earlier, except an eerie light now glows behind its eyes and it utters a high-pitched cackle as it attempts to slam into him...

Slam vs. Kronas: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17

...but being of short stature pays off and the Pumpking just barely misses, sailing harmlessly over the gnome's head.

The other pumpkin, carved to resemble a kitten but now more akin to some sort of hellcat, comes bobbing after Kara!

Slam vs. Kara: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Damage: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Burn: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Unlike its counterpart, the Hellcat Pumpkin barely manages to connect with Kara's shoulder and though the physical blow is surprisingly light, her arm burns as though she's been struck with a branding iron!

Kara, please make a DC 11 Reflex save!
