Season of Ghosts

Explore. Report. Cooperate. These are the three tenents of the Pathfinder Society, the globe-spanning organization based out of Absalom, the City at the Center of the World. Made up of adventurers of all stripes and from all walks of life, the Pathfinder Society seeks to explore, delve, and otherwise experience lesser-seen parts of the world and put the knowledge gained by its agents to paper for the benefit of each other as well as the general public. On the whole, the Society generally prefers to take a hands-off approach concerning its agents, allowing them to pursue their own interests and choose their own priorities in the downtime between assignments. And so the Pathfinder Society often makes for cases of strange bedfellows - and this case is likely to be no exception, either.

Perhaps due to stellar reports from missions past or due to a simple fluke of proximity to the area, each of you have been contacted by Venture-Captain Eliza Petulengro to meet with her at the Pathfinder Lodge located in Woodsedge. Woodsedge has always served as the home for dissident thought and radical philosophies in Galt and one would think that the Pathfinder Society would fit right in in such an environment. You realize that the truth is much grimmer however, as each of you arrive at the Woodsedge Lodge and notice that it seems to bear signs and hints of having been heavily damaged at one point in time. The welcome from the local populace is no better, with whispered words and distrustful glares following each of you as you step inside.

Upon checking in each of you are directed to the lodge’s meeting room by a wiry man wearing a white porcelain mask and a thin red ribbon around his neck, who informs you that Venture-Captain Petulengro will be with you shortly. Inside the small meeting room, a mahogany table piled high with papers and surrounded by multiple chairs occupies the center of the room. The warm afternoon sunlight streams in through a nearby window and the smell of freshly baked pastries wafts in from a nearby kitchen. For the moment, you are alone - with your thoughts and with each other.
______

All you, folks! Take it away :)

Seldiir carefully removes the Korvosan insignia from his field-coat.
"So, anyone been to Galt before? I hear they're really careful listeners..."
that's my only Galt joke right there. Hope it lands.

"Nope, never been here before... Careful listeners? Why do you need to be careful at listening? I do it all the time without even trying!" Kronas breaths in deeply, distracted by the smells "Oooh, pastries! Do you think there'll be time to grab some? They smell soo good! Oh..." He starts waving at everyone in the room and smiling. Kronas is small, even for a gnome, but makes up an extra foot of height thanks to his great mop of black hair "We never got to say hello properly! I'm Kronas, Kronas Kronglic." He's wearing a brilliant blue cape over an ill-fitting, yet well polished shirt of silvery metal "Pleased to meet you!"

Kronas jumps, suddenly remembering something "Oh, and this is my little sister, Luna! I'm helping her train to be a Pathfinder when she gets older." A tiny 2' 8" Gnome wearing a giant backpack steps out from behind Kronas and waves "Hi!" She says in a cheerful but shy voice. A tinkling noise accompanies her every move as the pots, pans, and other gear attached to her pack clatter together. She must be carrying a significant weight on her little shoulders, but she doesn't seem to mind. Noticing a few funny looks at her backpack she says "A good Pathfinder is a prepared Pathfinder... Well, that's what Kronas keeps telling me." She gives Kronas a suspicious look, noting that he seems to be travelling rather light.

She is a porter (a vanity from the Pathfinder Society Field Guide), she can carry up to 100 lbs of gear without slowing down. She will disappear whenever combat breaks out and conveniently pop up again out of combat whenever Kronas needs something (i.e. anything she is carrying will be unavailable during combat) :)

A female dwarf walks into the lodge "Good day to you pathfinders!"

She is wearing a chain shirt and you can't miss the heavy crossbow that is peeking out from over her shoulder.

"Me and William have come a long way, but we are finally here! Did anyone spot a bucket, so I can give him some water?"

She now only seems to see the small gnome with the huge pack "Oh my! I am sure William would not mind to carry part of that for you! Oh, introductions! I am Kara!"

Seldiir goes to investigate but the bucket has a hole in it and is being used to prop a door open.

"Sorry, no bucket. I'm Seldiir, by the way, good to meet you."
He offers a big hand for the dwarf to shake.

Luna starts giggling "What's the point of a bucket with a hole in it? That's just silly!" Luna excitedly jingles up to Kara and gives her a hug "Hello Kara! I'm Luna, that's my brother Kronas..." She puts one hand up to hide her mouth and starts whispering "Mum said I have to look after him, cause he keeps getting himself in trouble. But you mustn't tell... It's a secret!" She steps back and hefts her backpack proudly "You can tell William I'm okay, thank you. It's not really heavy at all."

A short-bearded man enters, and smiles at the company, nodding quickly. His clothes are mostly gray or dark, and his face has Nothing outstanding. He wears a nice chain shirt, and got a short bow and a short sword.

Hello to all. My name is Lebraerio, and I'm a Pathfinder agent. Been a while since my last mission, I'll admit, but I hope I'm not too rusty for a new field campaign.

Liberty's Edge

Upon entering, White Feather remarks at length about the quality and interesting characteristics of the valet's porcelain mask. He too wears one, though made of dyed leather. It covers his face entirely while letting a magnificent plume of long, sultry brown hair hang down behind it.

He is shown into the room where the rest of the Pathfinders have already started gathering.

Good morning! he says cheerfully. Though his voice is somewhat muffled by the mask, it is clear it is a rich baritone.

He stands reasonably tall for a human, but his build is broad and athletic. He crosses the room like a panther padding along the forest floor, moving with the grace of a dancer and the swagger of a bravo. He wears incredibly intricate robes of vibrant blue and gold, cotton and silk that are, by the looks of things, quite obviously the most expensive things he owns. A beautiful broach of a multicoloured songbird sits proudly on his chest.

Well met to each of you. I trust you received the notice from Venture-Captain Petulengro as well? allow me to introduce myself. I am known by my Shoanti name, White Feather. Though of course my friends just call me White.

Have any of you worked together before? he asked, his pale blue eyes searching the faces of those he speaks to.

Seldiir smiles, "Shoanti? My father used to trade with Hawk Clan when I was young. I'm from Korvosa."

Liberty's Edge

Ah, then we are practically neighbours! White Feather exclaims excitedly. Even with the mask his posture makes him somehow appear as if he is smiling. In fact I spent much time in Korvosa myself, though that was several years ago now.

Despite my given name, I am not of the Hawk Clan, but of the Tamiir-Quah - the Wind. But unlike most of my kin, I was not destined to stay holed up in a cave.

I consider myself more a citizen of the world these days in any case. But Galt was once a nation and a work of art entwined. It saddens me to see how far from grace they have fallen, but so far all I have been met with are deaf ears on the subject. he adds, making an inadvertent reference to Seldiir's earlier joke.

Kara sighs "One of these days I should buy a bucket for him, I will fill my mess tin with some water for him."

At Luna's hug Kara stiffens, and then gingerly pats the gnome on the back while looking at the others for any guidance. She visibly relaxes when she is let go.

"Wel met Lebraerio and White Feather. It seems we are complete now. Can I ask you a favor? I am in search for my uncle, his name is Harsk and he is also with the society. When I was put a little dwarfling he promised me he would give me some tips about crossbow shooting when I was an adult. Zarunkumar slips into the lodge trying to stay unnoticed by the others. As always she wears her Hat of Disguise making her appear to the others as someone of elven decent. Her clothes are also disguised to look like a ankle length purple dress and her hat appears as a simple comb holding her hair up in a bun.
In a quiet tone she greets the group. "Greeting all. Sorry for my tardiness. My name is Zarunkumar and I hope to use my healing powers to make sure you all make it home alive." And with her simple introduction complete she quietly sits down.

Season of Ghosts

As the group seems to hit a lull in the conversation, the door to the small meeting room opens and a woman with fiery orange hair and dressed in simple but functional robes strides into the room. She smiles as she looks at the assembled group.

"I'm glad to see that all of you made it here safely," she says, her tone polite and soft-spoken. "My name is Eliza Petulengro. And what are the names of the agents who answered my call today?"

Once everyone has had a chance to introduce themselves, again, the Venture-Captain takes a seat with you at the table. "As expected. Excellent." Moments later, the wiry man in the white porcelain mask enters the room. In his gloved hands, he carries a tray of sweet and savory pies, which he sets in the center of the table before quietly slipping away - though not before slipping White Feather a small scrap of paper.

Note:

Should you ever desire a replacement for your current mask and find yourself in Taldor, I highly recommend Tan Your Hide Leatherworking in fair Oppara.

Yours,
Ashby Paige

"I've always found that briefings are much more tolerable paired with a sweet or two," Venture-Captain Petulengro chuckles as she takes a knife and begins cutting slices out of a savory-looking chocolate pie, offering one to each of you, including Luna. "Be mindful you don't get food on the papers," she cautions as she settles back into her chair with a generous slice of pie. "They record the information your fellow agents have been gathering about the ebb and flow of Galtan society. To perform such work properly is, unfortunately, far less interesting than it sounds. Luckily, I have a far more engaging opportunity in mind for you."

The Venture-Captain pulls out a small map and directs your attention to it. "See here? This is Woodsedge, where we currently are. You'll be traveling about a hundred miles up the Sellen River to the village of Rosehaven. Rosehaven is the home of Armeline, a savvy information-gatherer who was once a reliable contact for the Pathfinder Society. Twelve years ago, she was accused of espionage against the revolution in connection with some of her past work for the Society," she explains. "She sent a cry for help to the Grand Lodge in Absalom. It was...an exceedingly difficult situation, considering that only a few months earlier revolutionaries stormed this very lodge and killed my predecessor and her servants."

Eliza sighs deeply. "Following that tragedy, the Decemvirate suspended all operations here in Galt. It was a sensible decision from their viewpoint - after all, the Decemvirate is not in the habit of sending agents on suicide missions. But their decision seemed a death sentence for Armeline. Whether through luck, guile, or both, she survived. I would like to extend a formal apology to her, and hopefully convince her to consider working with the Society again in the future. We have the perfect opportunity to do before us, as Rosehaven's upcoming festival culminates in a ceremony of ritual forgiveness. It's my hope that this, in combination with your own words, will convince her to move past the Society's unfortunate necessity all those years ago."

"I've arranged for a riverboat to pick you up at dawn. You'll arrive in Rosehaven on the morning of the first day of their festival." Eliza frowns. "One other thing - I have a hunch and I learned to trust my hunches years ago. I doubt this mission will be as simple as it seems. Stay alert and stay safe."

The Venture-Captain looks at each one of you. "Are there any questions?"
______

And we're off! If you have any questions to ask about the mission, now is the time. You'll also have the chance to make any last-minute purchases that you might need or want before you head to Rosehaven in the morning.

Liberty's Edge

White takes the note and reads it quickly. He nods his thanks to the other masked man and tucks the note into the sleeve of his blue robe.

Thank you for the offer of the sweets, Venture-Captain, they look wonderful - but I ate on the road. he says politely though his rumbling stomach suggests otherwise. He coughs to cover it and casts what looks like a mournful glance at the treats. And thank you for the opportunity.

May I ask, do we know if there was any one individual or perhaps a group of individuals who accused her? Also, are we to offer her anything in return for her returning to work for the Society or are we to just re-establish communication?

In spite of the somewhat-formal nature of the briefing, Eliza smiles widely at Kronas' compliment. "You're very welcome. As I said, I always found as an agent that briefings were much improved by the presence of sweets or a hot meal and so I try to provide such to others now that I'm an acting Venture-Captain."

Then, her expression grows grim as each of you begin offering up your questions and thoughts on the matter that lies ahead. Eliza shakes her head at White Feather's question. "Who made the accusations? In Galt, guilt and innocence are too often tried at the court of public opinion. Just one or two voices first, but then it begins to snowball out of control into an avalanche - entire crowds, towns, crying for someone's head. Whether or not her actions truly constituted espionage had little bearing on her purported crimes, much less the intentions behind what she was doing."

"As far as what to look for, I've never met her myself," Eliza admits. "But the description I was given was of a half-elven woman with blonde hair and brown eyes. Rosehaven is a small enough village that there hopefully shouldn't be more than one person fitting that description running around!"

"And when and if you locate her, all I ask is that you reestablish communications and convince her to consider working with the Society once more. If she'll agree to that then I'll speak with her at length to determine a suitable arrangement for her time and trouble - and continued safety," the Venture-Captain adds as she takes a bite of pie. "Between the festival and the passage of time, I hope that what ire Armeline might hold for the Society will have faded enough that she'll listen to you," she explains, nodding at Seldiir.

Lebraerio:

You know that Galt has long been home to brilliant artists and philosophers, whose independent spirits produce a hotbed for new ideas. However, the recent history of Galt is a story of blood and turmoil. Ever since House Thrune came to power in Cheliax, Galt has been trapped in a churning cycle of revolution. Quite a few past governments have fallen, and their leaders and supporters have met the guillotine’s blade. Each new government promises to rectify the ills of the last and bring peace and prosperity, but so far all those promises have been for naught.

Rosehaven is a village along the Sellen River, home to several hundred people. Its isolation shields it from the cycle of revolution, for the most part. Its people make their living primarily through farming and fishing. Each year they hold the Mercylight festival - three days of games and festivities that culminates in a ceremony of forgiveness for past affronts in honor of their patron goddess Shelyn. You've heard rumors that the festival's history has some dark roots but little more than that.

After losing count for the third time, he gives up and decides to ask "Oh, do have you some sort of letter, or seal or something so that we can prove we're acting on your authority?"

Season of Ghosts

Seldiir:

You know that the Sellen River is is one of the most heavily traveled waterways in eastern Avistan and plays an important role in the trade and culture of all the nations of central and northeastern Avistan. Originating in the north of Brevoy, the Sellen flows south through Numeria and the River Kingdoms, and along the borders of Kyonin, Galt (where you are right now), and Andoran, finally pouring into Star Bay and the Inner Sea at the Taldan port of Cassomir. It is easily one of the longest rivers on Golarion. Fed by dozens of tributary rivers, high mountain lakes and thousands of streams, the Sellen moves more water than all the other rivers that touch the Inner Sea combined. For this reason it doesn't show typical flooding and dry seasons like most rivers, but flows as faithfully as the sun rises. With the area of the Sellen that you'll be traversing as well as Rosehaven itself largely bordered by grassy plains and forests, you'd expect to encounter flora and fauna typical for such environments - deer, wolves, and the like.

Eliza blinks and then suddenly laughs. "I didn't just a few moments ago, but I do now - thank you for reminding me," she responds a bit sheepishly as she takes a piece of blank parchment and a pen and quickly scratches out a short note before stamping it with a seal bearing the Glyph of the Open Road.

Note:

Lady Armeline,

You do not know me but I know of you. The agents carrying this note have been sent to speak with you on my authority concerning matters best left uncommitted to parchment. Please hear them out and trust that I send them with the utmost care and goodwill towards you and yours.

Sincerely,
Eliza Petulengro

"Hopefully that will be vague enough to avoid any unpleasant entanglements," Eliza nods with satisfaction. "She'll recognize the glyph for what it is and know you for who you are."

Liberty's Edge

Sounds delightful. White says with more than a hint of sarcasm. It's such a shame what happened to the revolution here, so many voices crying out for change drowned out by zealots and opportunists. he shakes his head sadly.

Drowned out? I've heard they were more cut off. Galt is quite a dangerous place for dissension

Liberty's Edge

White Feather nods and runs his hand through his hair.

Yes, your description is probably more accurate. he admits. This lady Armeline must have had a terrible time.

Eliza, how are we to get upriver? Does anyone know if it's better to travel on the river or beside it? he asks the group.

Kronas stands a little taller, glad that he has already proved helpful. He takes the note happily and stuffs it down his shirt "We won't let you down!" Although he's little concerned about how swiftly the conversation moved from things being 'drowned' to 'travelling by river,' Kronas decides that the others tall enough to know what they are doing "Oh, travelling on the river sounds like it would be much quicker! We don't want to miss the festival..."

Meanwhile, Luna starts packing up her braiding supplies, realising that it would be much better to do White Feather's hair while on the boat. She quickly stuffs the feathers and beads back into pouches on her backpack, but because her hands are still sticky from the pie, most of the glitter gets stuck to her palms. Giggling, she waves a sparkly hand at Kronas.

Season of Ghosts

"As I mentioned, I've already secured your passage by riverboat," Eliza nods. "And Seldiir is correct, the Sellen is well-traveled as it's a major source of trade for this part of Avistan. If you were to have any trouble during the trip then I will be extremely surprised," she smiles in an attempt to be reassuring.

The Paizo outage this morning kind of threw me off a bit as I was hoping to get you guys on your way sooner. I need to head to work soon but I'll do my best to get you moved forward tonight to Rosehaven (your river trip will be blessedly uneventful :)) if things are quiet. In the meantime, you've got the rest of the day/evening if you want to make any special preparations or last-minute purchases!

Season of Ghosts

With your instructions clear, you each spend the rest of the day making preparations for your trip to Rosehaven and spend a restful night at the Woodsedge lodge. The next morning you rise early and make your way down to the docks where you meet up with Hugo, captain of the small riverboat that will be your home for the next several days. Once preparations are made, Hugo's men carefully guide the boat away from the docks and out onto the river, beginning your journey to Rosehaven.

After ten temperate days rowing up the Sellen River, a village comes into sight. A chaotic panoply of shops spills from the shore, splashing into a web of jetties on the river’s surface. The pungent aromas of fresh fish, spices, and dyes waft on the crisp autumnal winds, accompanied by cheery shouts of low prices from their proprietors.

The rowers bring you to one of the few patches of dock not otherwise occupied by tradesmen. Their boss, Hugo, addresses you, "C’est Rosehaven, a calm cove amidst the storm of revolution." He smiles proudly at his own turn of phrase, more words than you had heard from him in the entire journey. "Say hello for me to Madame Ivy. You will see her, I think, for she is owning the Silver Flute inn.” Once everyone and their belongings have been safely deposited at the docks, Hugo waves goodbye as his men guide the riverboat back onto the river. After returning his wave, you turn your gaze away from the river and to the town itself. Rosehaven awaits.
