Even in these wee hours of the morning, the sounds of reveling throughout the Grand Lodge are growing louder. Arliss Hall is busier than seemingly ever before, and the pre-Convocation parties never really stopped last night.

Gameplay thread for dotting and such! This game is part of PbP Gameday IV and will begin officially November 5th.

Kingmaker Tactical | Strategic | The Marchlands | Campaign Tracking

Every year, the Grand Lodge hosts the Grand Convocation at its campus in Absalom. While the Grand Convocation is ostensibly not a party, it is an opportunity for the Decemvirate and Absalom’s resident venture-captains to express their gratitude to field agents and those venture-captains stationed abroad. The Grand Convocation also serves the practical purpose of encouraging networking, relationships, and shared intra-Society communication. The Ten are well aware that some interaction between field agents will only ever occur informally, hence the festivities serve to provide an excuse for agents across the Inner Sea to meet and mingle, if only for a week. The capstone event is a banquet with remarks from Marcos Farabellus, the Master of Swords...

Master of Swords Marcos Farabellus strides up to the large crowd and claps his hands together for attention.

"Welcome Pathfinders, one and all! And welcome to our traveling venture-captains stationed abroad as well our honored guests! I am Marcos Farabellus, and on behalf of the Decemvirate, I welcome you to the Pathfinder Society’s annual Grand Convocation! I shall address all of the attendees later this afternoon to announce some of the Society’s greatest accomplishments over the past year and our plans for the future. In the meantime, I invite you to stroll about the campus, meet with your peers, and enjoy all the sites of the Grand Lodge. We have set up numerous challenges and contests so that you can show off your skills or sharpen them if need be. I’ll send around ushers when it’s time to assemble for the speeches on the north lawn. Enjoy!"

Bumping into the clump of relatively green Pathfinders is an adventurer of a distinctly redder tinge...

"Oh hello there!" comes a thunderous voice, accompanied by a winged tiefling woman with an enormous grin. "Say, aren't you the lot I bought travel tickets for! GOOD TA SEE YA!" She gives each of you a bone-crushing hug.

"In case you don't know, I'm BOOM! 'Cause I'm loud. I think. Or something?" The glare from her teeth is almost blinding. "Any, want to try some contests! I'll challenge anyone at the weight-lifting! Tee hee!" She taps a bottle by her side that fizzles with some odd beverage.

"Let's take a tour!"

Kingmaker Tactical | Strategic | The Marchlands | Campaign Tracking

Here's how this works: each of you gets to participate in one of the contests, should you so choose. Each PC chooses but two PCs can pick the same one. Make one of the skill/ability checks listed in the entry. Choose carefully, because success can win you fame, fame can win you friends, and friends can win you Rumors! Throw in a character introduction, too, if you don't mind.

Animal Taming:
Staged at the menagerie and training area on the grounds, a Pathfinder demonstrates hir skill at handling and taming unusual creatures from all over the Inner Sea. The more experienced the field agent, the more exotic the beasts. Handle Animal, Intimidate, or wild empathy.
Boasting/Storytelling:
Near the temporary structures west of the front gates, a large “talking circle” has been marked out on the grounds. There is limited seating but plenty of comfortable spots on the lawn. Pathfinders compete to tell the best story. Complete accuracy is optional if the tale is funny or entertaining enough. Experienced Pathfinders are expected to have grander tales. Music or dance is just as welcome if incorporated in the narrative. Bluff or Perform.
Lore Symposium:
This forum is conducted in an outdoor lecture area in the Quadrangle. Agents do not literally compete in this event, but a meaningful contribution to the panel discussion garners attention and accolades from fellow scholars. Linguistics or Knowledge.
Obstacle Course:
An obstacle course designed to test agility is set up near the training grounds, where Pathfinders compete in a timed trial to be the quickest one through the course. A large chalkboard lists the best times and participants. Acrobatics or Dexterity.
Sleuthing:
This event is hosted in a lecture hall in one of the eastern outbuildings, where several agents have set up a fake crime scene. An audience watches as a blindfolded Pathfinder is led into the middle of the scene. He then can remove his blindfold and has two minutes in which to examine the scene before replacing the blindfold. He then must describe from memory all of the clues and forensic evidence that he noticed to an audience and event organizer. Heal, Perception, or Survival.
Trap Mastery:
This competition is staged within a spare room of the Mausoleum. Tables are laden with boxes, chests, cutaway sections of door handles, empty sarcophagi, and other common places where traps are concealed. Pathfinders know a trap is present and must disarm it with a time limit (taking 10 and 20 is disallowed). Alternatively, agents can also create or modify a trap to confound their comrades for credit. All of the traps are nonlethal. Craft (traps) or Disable Device.
Weight Lifting:
Pathfinders compete by seeing who can lift the heaviest weights. Gnomes, halflings, and other smaller participants may opt for a handicap, and experienced agents are expected to be mightier than the newer recruits. Strength.

Hush looks around and sighs to himself. The priest of Norgorber stands dressed all in black, from his dark cloak with the hood pulled over his hair to his black cloth pants and the shirt visible under his silvery chain mail. At his waist are a pair of shortswords, his weapons of choice. His face is concealed behind a black wooden mask, painted as black as the rest of his garb. The mask is plain and unadorned, and its only feature is a single, star-shaped eyehole: the holy symbol of his dark god. I'm not meant for these things, He thinks to himself resignedly. If my overseers didn't think it important in the interest of keeping the Society happy... He's taken completely by surprise with the large woman's monstrous hug.

Daragor is bald and wears an eye patch to cover his missing eye. At his back he carries a greataxe and an exotic crossbow.

A tall, lanky elf wanders through the festivities with a bemused look upon his face. Over his moderately heavy armor is draped an...odd assortment of fabrics and clothing, its garish colors and clashing designs vaguely reminiscent of Absalom fashions that are decades out of date. As the Master of Swords delivers his speech, the man listens to it with one ear while glancing around for a waiter bringing wine.

His detached observations are broken with a start as he and a few other Pathfinders are loudly greeted by the tiefling woman. Composing himself, the pale-skinned elf speaks. "Ah yes, 'Boom' is it? A did receive a missive of some sorts from you. Saloruis." he extends a hand. "Charmed."

Salouris looks around at the young agents that their greeter has also gathered. Well, none of them seem to recognize her either. Curious. Is this one of the Society's new directives? At the mention of a tour, his long ears perk up again. "I suppose it would be nice to look around. Anything would be a welcome respite after that sewer incident. And did I hear someone discuss an assortment of traps?"

Salouris will gladly follow Boom if she directs him around, trying to steer her towards the 'Trap Mastery' competition. "And Speaking of that bottle of yours, have you noticed any liquid refreshments being passed around..."

"Let's go see how Daragor is doing at the symposium! Maybe he's shot somebody in a demonstration!" Boom's cheerful expression flickers to sadness only for a moment, when she remembers that would be a bad thing. It quickly returns to grinning, once she's forgotten she said it.

"Wow, you know, this place looks fancier than when I last saw it! Everything's so FANCY! Hee hee! The Ten must really have not spared expense! Hmm, gold is so shiny... it's in its properties, you know! Anyway, I've heard this is an effort to show appreciation for field agents. A lot of us veterans sponsored agents to come back from distant lands. Like Vudra! Or Tian Xia! Or Varisia! I guess it's been a successful year, too!"

Boom and Rimble enter the symposium just as Daragor is finishing a brilliant remark on the proper care for bow-strings and its effects on a weapon's effectiveness. There's barely a breath between his sitting down again and Boom's massive, cacophonous clapping fills the quiet and dusty room. "Hee hee! Well said!"

As the next panel is getting together, a short wizard pulls Daragor aside and thanks him for his insight. "Thanks, mate! I'll be sure to keep my string well taken care of now. Say, do you know what Farabellus is going to say in his speech? I'm hearing its something important. The Master of Scowls, Aram Zey, was supposed to be delivering it, but said he didn't want to and that the Convocation is just a waste of time and money. Poophead. I'm glad Farabellus volunteered for it!" He shakes his head. "Well, thanks again!"

A delighted Boom (because when is she not delighted, you must ask?) leads the way over to the the traps contest, just in time to see Salouris snip the final string on a prepared trap. The mechanism slowly unwinds... and then bursts! The elf's garish clothing adds a bright, fluorescent yellow stain down the front. "Well, good try! Ha!" shouts Boom from three feet away. "My method of trap-spotting is to just walk into 'em! Still hasn't killed me! Yet! Hee hee!"

She rummages in a pouch and produces an unlabeled bottle filled with a viscous brown liquid, which she proffers to Salouris. "Refreshment?!"

Sidney, go ahead and roll! Hush, pick something if you'd like! Hskoro, you too!

Boom booms a laugh and is briefly subdued by a fit of giggling. "Visions, hee hee! What fun!"

Collecting herself (as much as Boom is ever collected), she responds. "Hmm, well it looks like Hskoro did not have much luck with sleuthing. Perhaps all that oil threw off his scent! SCENT! Wonderful stuff, ha! Well, let's go see how the racers are doing!"

She eyes Salouris taking a draw on the drink she offered, and she giggles a bit to herself. "AYE! UNUSUAL! Made it myself! I call it AFTERBEER!" Another bout of giggling. "I didn't sponsor anything, no, I'm still an AGENT! LIKE YOU! Technically VC Flaxseed sponsored your trip! I just borrowed it from the petty cash box! Isn't all cash petty? Hee hee!"

The group arrives just in time to see Sidney and Hush cross the finish line one after the other. This time Boom's clapping is well-accompanied, though she still does her best to drown it out.

2d8 ⇒ (5, 6) = 11

Another bone-crushing hug ensues for each. "WELL DONE! WELL DONE!" Throwing his hood back on, Hush can overhear two Venture Captains chatting nearby about a Foreign Quarter councilman, Lord Omrys of House Ahnkamen, who has apparently registered some concern about the Grand Convocation with Absalom’s Grand Council. Lord Omrys feels that the Pathfinder Society is a “weirdness magnet” that brings more trouble to the city than good. He fears that a “Pathfinder Convention” is only going to exacerbate and concentrate the mischief that surrounds the Society, so he has requested that the district guard keep close tabs on the Grand Lodge for
the next week. The other VC notes that Decemvirate has been in contact with Lord Omrys and assured him that all will be well.

Hush's attention turns back to the group, where Boom is saying something about the menagerie to Sidney. "We can visit the MENAGERIE!! I offered to stay there but they wouldn't let me, hee hee hee! The Lodge really spared no expense in bringing a lot of unusual specimens for all the visitors! What's more unusual than me!!"

That was Round I, now for Round II! Everyone pick a different contest and go compete in it! Or just chat with Boom, that'd be fine too.

That was actually sort of fun, Hush thinks as he dons his cloak again. He almost heads to another event, but the conversation he overhears convinces him otherwise. Maybe there'll be trouble here after all. The Decemvirate, as Hush understands it, is a highly powerful organization, and if they're involved with peacekeeping then peace is likely to be kept. Still, one can't be too careful. Hush tries to linger as close to the two venture-captains and Lord Omrys for as much of their conversation as he can.

"Sharp senses there, gentlemen! Or, uh, lady, perhaps?" he adds uncertainly, glancing at Hush. "Were any of you among the agents that helped track down the Sky Key, eh? I wouldn't doubt it!" He leans in a little closer. "I hear they've put it all together, too! Put it in some chamber in Skyreach with no windows and no sharp corners. Something strange about that artifact... otherworldly, even. Maybe Farabellus will talk about it, eh!" He flashes an excited grin. "Saw you three walking around with a tiefling earlier, can't remember seeing her here before. So many agents coming in from abroad for the Convocation! Rumor has it there's some important plan for the next year and all the Venture Captains are jockeying for position..."

Meanwhile, over in the Quadrangle, Hskoro and Salouris are finishing up a rather interesting session on reptiloid cultures of the Eastern Casmaron. One of the panelists, a teacher here at the Grand Lodge, comes over for a quick discussion on the Kayli Conflict. "You really know your stuff, lad! Good to see so many young faces around here. The Quadrangle's not been so full in so many hears! All that business in Nerosyan and Jormurdun has really inspired a new crop. All bright, optimistic lads and lasses eager to join the Society and be a force for good -- and scholarship, ha! Well, thanks for joining us."

"So!" is the echoing sign that Boom has brought Rimble back to rejoin the rest of the group. "Anyone have any more contests they want to try! TRY! Hee, hee! Trying is fun! I've still got an open offer for WEIGHTS! Not wights though, hee hee!" She winks at Salouris.

"Rimble had a great story! About trolls! And cantrips, hee hee! Any of you have a good story?! I've got one or two myself!" Boom's smile suddenly disappears and she appears to be lost in concentrated thought. "No, not two. 87! I have 87 good stories! Yes, that's the number."

She looks up again and remembers her new friends, and quick as lighting the splitting grin returns. "Stories, anyone!?"

Never had a chance to explore the politics of the Society before. So the venture-captains are getting restless, huh? Probably means someone either stepped down or died... In the Silencers there was little scheming; everything was decided strictly by seniority, although Hush had been told by the High Overseer directly that involvement with the Society might eventually grant him status above his time. It was the main reason he chose to keep doing Society missions and abide by their code: Explore, Report, Cooperate.

Hush heads to the Animal Taming area, hoping that a change in crowds will let him pick up more information.

I'd like to get a bit creative here. I have neither Handle Animal nor Intimidate, but I do have an ability called Charming Presence which says it can manifest as a fear aura. It's just a sanctuary effect (DC 14 Will negates) so what I'd like to do is pick the most dangerous-looking creature they'll let me try out, then demonstrate that I can make it not attack out of fear.

"Thank you for the appreciation, milady", greets the gnome when Boom praises his history. "And unfortunately I wasn't at Arliss Hall". After they went back, and she speaks, Rimble asked her, "wow, 87 good stories, you said? And what is your more important history between all of them?", the sorcerer lights his pipe while look at her with all of his attention.

"My pleasure." Salouris responds to the teacher at the quadrangle. It is nice to see that there are other serious scholars about...

Meandering about, the elf finds himself following Hskoro towards the obstacle course. His lips tighten as he sees his comrade struggle at the climbing wall, then takes an extra swig from Boom's vial and attempts the course himself.

Dexterity: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Sadly however, any courage the drink brought about is easily negated by its other effects, and the elf finds himself tripping over the very first log. Sheepishly brushing himself off, he tries to slink back towards Boom. Perhaps best to leave the physical feats to others...

"Unfortunately Ms. Boom, I was finishing my schooling when this Skykey was found, but I thank you for the compliment. The stories will have to wait for a moment, as I see where I can preach about the glories of Sarenrae!" Sidney replies excidedly noticing that he could preach the teachings of his homeland to the non-believers. Somewhere where I won't get looked down at for preaching the glory of the Dawnflower! Maybe the heathens would convert, or at least I hope some could.....

Walking towards the group of scholars, and heretics, Sidney raises his arm and starts preaching about the Lady of the Dawn.

"OH! VERY NICE! Hee hee!" Boom thunders at Hush, her greatsword clanking noisily against her armor from the vigorous applause. In its cage, a pard hunches low, eyes locked on the black-robed figure, but with its tail low.

"MY important history? Well I know ALL KINDS of history! Heee! Watcha wantin' to know? About Absalom? About the Shori Empire? About Minkai? About the Plane of Air? You pick, hee hee!" It takes her a moment of hanging the question, but she gets there. Sort of. "Oh! You mean ME! Ummm, not much to tell! I like experiments! I make things explode! I make things not explode! It's fun! And sometimes I go on ADVENTURES! Those are real fun!" Rimble gets the impression that Boom still didn't really grasp his question fully.

In any case, it's interrupted by Boom clapping a massive claw-hand on Salouris and Hskoro's backs after their disastrous run in the obstacle course. (Indeed, Salouris got himself entirely entangled in the rope ladder and had to be removed.) "Nice try! Maybe start with CARTWHEELS! Hee hee ha ha!" She demonstrates with the worst cartwheel anyone has ever seen, but pops up beaming.

"Let's go see if Sidney has any new followers! Ha! I like Desna myself! I do LOTS of travelling, you know! But Sarenrae is fun too! And very bright. And fiery! I like fire! BOOM! Hee hee!" The group comes upon the Flare finishing a succinct sermon, with a few Qadiran initiates nodding along happily to the conclusion.

"Yay! All my new friends are here! We've got a few minutes left, I think."

"She is more crazy than the most part of gnomish families", thoughts Rimble.

After smoke a bit, the gnome holds his pipe back to his pocket. "Maybe I could run a little...", he says while goes to the training grounds, to test his agility in the obstacle course.

"Ooh! Looks like the BIG SPEECH is coming!" Boom grins an impossibly wide smile. "Well, gents!" she giggles to Rimble, Salouris, and Daragor, "DO HURRY! Come look me up in the crowd after!" It's very obvious she didn't catch her own entendre.
