The intermittent breeze off the Vanji River provides welcome respite from the jungle’s torrid oppression. The docks in Nantambu seem as busy as any in Absalom, Katapesh, or Sothis. Hundreds of dockhands move quickly to offload exotic cargo from vessels ranging from single- person canoes to fifty-foot-long river barges. All manner of items can be seen entering the city including rare animal pelts, fine linens, and fruits and vegetables from the far corners of Golarion.
Just past the docks, vast open-air markets completely encompass the mosaic-decorated towers making up Nantambu’s inner city. Hundreds of glass chimes and beaded charms hang from the towers’ balconies and windows, casting a kaleidoscopic radiance across the city’s skyline.
Another time, exploration of the jewel of the Mwangi Expanse would be a welcome excursion, however, Master of Scrolls Kreighton Shaine’s words to the party from before the journey’s start still ring clear.
”As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, the Society recently acquired what we believe to be the very core of the fabled Sky Key. The entirety of the organization is now focused on finding the four remaining pieces of the mysterious, fractured item, as well as finding any information we can regarding Numerian technology.”
”We received word than an agent in Nantambu has obtained a copy of A Thread of Silver. The original copy of this book was stolen from the Technic League in Numeria generations ago. Since that time, several copies have surfaced. In each case, however, the books’ owners were savagely murdered and the copies were destroyed by Technic League agents.”
”We don’t know if the book that was purchased is legitimate, but the very mention of its name is treacherous. Venture-Captain Nieford Sharrowsmith is off on an important expedition, so the Nantambu lodge is in the hands of our trusted associate, Aya Allahe. I need you to travel to the covert lodge—in the back of Sharrowsmith’s Exports on the outskirts of Nantambu. Take this coin and show it to the guards standing outside the inner sanctum. Tell them that you require an appraisal. They will recognize the coin and let Aya know you’ve arrived. Work with her to make sure the existence of the book remains a secret and see it safely to Absalom. No one must learn we purchased the book or of our operations in Nantambu.”
The Master of Scrolls’s words fade from memory as the early morning sun continues its ascent into the clear Mwangi sky.
You can make knowledge check on various topics mentioned here. (Although with Ibid in the party, I wonder why I bother…)

Nantambu's Magical history
Gunari Maximoff |
The swarthy warpriest looks out at the jungles, absent-mindlessly petting his monkey, not the least aware of the double entendre that made. He was not sweating, like most of his companion, having called upon the power of his god to shield him from the heat. He takes a sip from his ever-present tankard, a fine one now, decorated and enchanted by the Drunken Hero himself.
"What have we gotten ourselves into this time, little buddy?" he asks the monkey, who pays no attention to his perch. "The Technic League again. And the Sky Key? Well, let's go find this book and get back home to where the air isn't so thick you can cut it with a knife."
He thinks about the air around Absalom, and restates, "Well, less thick, at least. I know you like the jungles, Gilligan, but I am a civilized man, so I prefer places a little more temperate."
He takes another sip of his morning brew, and ponders.
Haafiz |
Haafiz arrives unexpectedly on the scene. "You were expecting Lort perhaps?" he asks the assembled Pathfinders, "Well he has decided to get some rest. Apparently, he managed to get himself killed because he attempted to pretend he had peace bonded his weapon at some party. Whatever that means. He said Gunari will be able to fill us in..."

"I have heard of this book, 'A Thread of Silver' before. It details what happened when explorers first ventured into the dungeon known as the Silver Mount. The Technic League had the original of this book, but it was stolen from them. They have hunted for a copy or someone who knows the secrets ever since, in an attempt to recover what they have lost."
Ibid. Oxley Abel |
The old man fans himself with a few pages of his journal, trying to ward off the heat but appearing to have very little luck. His brow is soaked with sweat and his hair is a tangled mess in the humid air, while his fingers seem to smudge each page they touch due to the moisture they carry. One of his hands continues to flip through the pages, and he cringes each time he catches sight of the ink of his notes smearing, as Ibid tries to correlate the scattered shorthand of his randomly collected and transcribed thoughts with what he knows of the task at hand, as explained by the Master of Scrolls, Kreighton Shaine, just before they left Absalom.
He pauses for a moment, looking up to the beating sun overheard, and knows he must find someway to protect himself from the scorching rays in this part of the world. With a sigh of defeat as a fresh wave of heat saps his strength, he looks to the others with a weary and worn eye.
"Quite right Haafiz, you always manage to impress. Not only are you more than capable with a blade, but you are a smart chap to be sure," the old man says warmly to his new friend. "I've been trying to compile some notes on the Technic League, A Thread of Silver, Nantambu and it's magical history. However, I can't help but think I am still leaving something out... It just feels like there is more I should know. Anyway, this is what I know so far, and if I manage to think of the rest, I'll be sure to let you all know."
The old man proceeds to tell the others what knows...

The Technique League is a formerly secret society whose chief goal is the acquisition of personal and worldly power through magic and ancient technology.
The League is incredibly protective of their secrets and power, and they ruthlessly hunt down those who leave Numeria with technology or knowledge thereof, including such books as A Thread of Silver. Those said to possess such jealously guarded secrets are often brutally murdered to maintain the League’s sole control of such technology.

Nantambu is the Mwangi Expanse’s second largest city, with a population of over 14,000 people of mostly Zenj and Bonuwat tribal heritage. It is the home of the Magaambya, one Golarion’s oldest and most storied academies of arcane knowledge.
Members of Zenj tribes are believed to be the most populous of the Mwangi peoples, living in hundreds of small tribes in the jungles and savannas of the Mwangi Expanse. Some of the tribes live in villages alongside the region’s many rivers while others are nomadic herders who graze their cattle or goats in the Expanse’s grasslands and hills. The Bonuwat are seafarers, and as such are often the group most encountered by the outside world. The Mwangi found in ports such as Bloodcove or the Shackles tend to be Bonuwat. They are excellent fishermen and sailors.
Nantambu maintains a remarkable aura of security and normalcy despite the lack of defensive fortifications or a standing army, primarily due to its strong magical history.
The tallest tower in Nantambu is known as the Natambiyan. The gold-flecked tower is said to contain the Watcher’s Stone of Jatembe, a magical scrying globe used by Old-Mage Jatembe himself.

Nantambu's Magical historyNantambu’s magical history, Knowledge (arcana): 1d20 + 13 + 1d6 ⇒ (13) + 13 + (1) = 27
Earthfall ushered in the Age of Darkness, it is said that Old-Mage Jatembe and his Ten Magic Warriors fought to reclaim fragments of civilization and enlightenment in the aftermath of the comprehensive cultural collapse. Their followers were said to have settled Nantambu near the end of the Age of Anguish and built the Magaambya to stand as Garund’s center of learning.
The magic perfected by Old-Mage Jatembe and taught in the Magaambya today blends arcane study with natural magic, creating a unique hybrid of scholarship and druidism.
Old-Mage Jatembe is said to have learned secrets whispered by the severed head of the ancient god of serpentfolk, Ydersius, before sewing shut its lips once more. He also slew the King of Biting Ants and sealed away the ruins of the Doorway to the Red Star. He was even known to have communed with angels and devils as an equal, using any means available to ensure the safety and survival of his people.

Sorry all, Ibid missed a couple DC 30's in thereGM Karma |
I doubt there's any need to apologize for not always making the DC30 rolls, Ibid :)
The idea a hiking miles in the hot and humid Mwangi air sounds far too exhausting, so the group decides to look for a transportation to their final destination. And after a short negotiations, Miro manages to hire a small river barge to take them to Sharrowsmith's Exports - a marketplace well known to the local. Of course, what the locals do not know, is that the very same building secretly functions as a the only active Pathfinder lodge in the whole Mwangi Expanse.
The slow pace of the river barge is a great excuse to enjoy the marvels of Nantambu - the busy markets filled with exotic wares, chimes of colored glass decorating many buildings, and of course many different kinds of boats carrying their load around the city. Further away the Pathfinders can also catch a glimpse of Magaambya, the fabled arcane academy in the very center of the city.
Finally the barge stops, and leaving the adventurers to the pier closest to Sharrowsmith's. Towering wooden gates stand open, leading to a vast courtyard surrounded by thick, stone walls. Dozens of colorful awnings cover rows of tables and carts, as hundreds of customers peruse all manner of exotic goods.
Two large, vaguely human statues rise from a central fountain. Their faces look up to the sky and their gaping mouths overflow with water feeding into the basin below. Beyond the fountain stands an immense stone building lined with monolithic pillars, behind which is a facade carved with great beasts native to the Mwangi jungles. Two guards stand watch over the bazaar just inside the gates, and two more stand outside the sealed doors to the inner building.
Cyrus the Flea |
Cyrus falls behind the group, lost in thought. He absent mindedly fans himself with a worn leather hat in the heat. Finally, he looks up at the group, his friends. He sees the aging body of his closest friend, Ibid, as the man struggles in the oppressive jungle air.
Cyrus looks down at the hat, finely crafted leather, silk lining inside and an inscription,The Fox, is flanked by stylized fox shaped silhouettes along where the hat sits on the brow of the wearer.
I still can't figure it out pops. I don't know what to do... How am I supposed to just leave it like this?
After a bit more walking, Cyrus sidles up to Ibid.
"Here. This should be yours. I know why you gave it to me, but I don't think I need it anymore." the ninja holds the hat out to Ibid as they walk. Before the man can answer, the group arrives at the expected building. Instead of waiting for him to take it, Cyrus plops the hat onto Ibid's head, then strides up to the guards.
"gentleman, do you know someone who can help us with this? We heard this was the place to come. I have this coin here, and an looking to get it appraised."

One of the guards takes a look at the coin, and nods. "Appraised, eh? Please come on in." He opens the door to the inner building, and motions the party to follow him. The guard leads them to the foyer and asks them to wait there for a moment, before disappearing further into the building. Soon, he returns. And with him arrives a beautiful Mwangi aasimar woman with golden eyes and lips, smooth dark skin that shines with a celestial radiance, and modest, traditional Mwangi attire.
"These are the gentlemen who wished to have a coin appraised," the guard says.
Welcome to Sharrowsmith's exports, gentlemen. I am Aya Allahe, business partner for mister Sharrowsmith. May I see the coin in question?" As Cyrus once more presents coin, Aya studies it closely and then dismisses the guard. "Thank you, Belah. I take the guests from here. Please, let us move to the appraisal room." The guard bows, and returns to his post, while Aya opens a door opposite to the building entrance. She waits until all the adventurers are inside, and then carefully closes the door.
"Welcome Pathfinders. It’s good to see that your leaders take your recent acquisition seriously. If you will follow me, I will lead you to your lodge." Aya runs her hand along the wall and presses a hidden catch. The wall slowly recedes, revealing a small room lit by a single torch. "Please, follow me." She leads the PCs through the door, past a vaguely human wooden statue, and into a warmly lit lounge.
"Please think of this as your home away from home. You will find it currently empty, as Nieford departed several weeks ago and took most of his agents with him. The venture-captain left only Arvellos Rand behind to watch over the grounds until he returned. Rand had only just arrived in Nantambu with the item whose discovery prompted your visit here. Now, he has now been missing for two days."
"Your precious book is locked in the lodge’s hidden vault, but I fear it may not be safe even there. Rumors ride the winds that strange mechanical creatures have been seen in the corners of the city and dark shadows stalk the night. I fear that the book’s rightful owners are here in my city and it’s only a matter of time before they find this location— putting my investment and my safety at risk."
"From what I have heard of the Technic League, they will stop at nothing to destroy the book and lay waste to any who would stand in their way. It is important that you find Arvellos Rand and make sure no one can connect a copy of A Thread of Silver to our facility. Should the League learn of its location, I fear the defenses of this lodge would not survive their magical and technological onslaught."
You'll probably have some questions for Aya. I'll put in a map of Sharrowsmith's Exports to the tactical, from now on you are free to walk around the lodge. You arriver through the Grand bazaar (A1). The foyer was A2, appraisal room A4. And Aya finally took you to the Lodge lounge in A7.
Haafiz |
Did you know that in Scions of the Sky Key and By Way of Bloodcove there was no description of her beyond the picture - and no mention that she was aasimar?! Man, the editorial staff phoned it in on those ones. You can't assume the GM or players have played every scenario including that NPC before! In any case that explains her golden eyes and lips!
Haafiz is utterly enchanted by this golden-eyed woman. The Keleshite simply stares, agog, for a while at the counterpoint of her ebon skin and golden accents. When he finally comes to his senses, he is completely unsure how long he has been there simply staring. "My apologies, Mistress Allahe: I find you simply enchanting. Can you tell us anything more about this Arvellos Rand? How did Venture Captain Sharrowsmith know of him?"
GM Karma |
Well, Technic Siege doesn't have any picture of her, so I suppose it evens out :) I actually tried to look for the picture you linked in Scions, but looks like you've removed it. Google picture search to the help!
Ibid. Oxley Abel |
Ibid feels the familiar weight of the old weatherworn hat placed atop his head, and turns to hear Cyrus's explanation. It had once been the youth's father's, and he didn't know what to say in response or even how to react at being given it back. Needing time to process the implications of this act, Ibid follows their host and tries to keep his mind occupied with her words.
Following after Haafiz's questions.
"Thank you for the information, courtesy, and hospitality," the old man says, smiling at Aya. "You mentioned that Arvellos Rand has been missing for two days... Did he wander out into the town on that day and simply not return?" The old man thinks for a while on this.
"The question I think we need to ask ourselves is..." he processes the question before putting it into words. "Does the Technic League already have Mr. Rand?"
"If they do, presumably they are trying to collect the location of this place from him. And if he hasn't already provided the location to them, we have to assume he will do so soon."
"If they don't have him, then he is either incapable of returning, or fears he cannot return."
GM Karma |
Aya merely smiles pleasantly when Haafiz catches himself of staring her - he is surely not the first man captivated by her looks.
"As far as I know, Arvellos Rand was a lone field agent of your Society, operating in this region. I do not know if Nieford knew him beyond normal Pathfinder business."
"You are most welcome, Mr. Abel. This is your Society's lodge, after all. Mr. Rand did not particularly report his movement to me, so I can only assume he was visiting the city that day. But, at the end of the day, he did not come back here. If he was hiding somewhere, he should have sent a message to us somehow. So I think something must have happened to him, and we shouldn't exclude the possibility of him being captive of the Technic League."
Ibid. Oxley Abel |
"I quite agree, my Lady," Ibid says, nodding to Aya. "I think you are right. I fear Arvellos Rand has already fallen into the hands of the Technic League. We should probably assume this is the scenario currently at hand playing out around us, as it puts us in the worst possible predicament, in which case the countdown has already started... ticking away, second by second, to the appointed time when our enemies are ready to raid this place and take back their precious 'Thread of Silver."
Well, he thinks, correcting himself, but preferring not to speak the dreadful possibility out loud. The worst thing would be if Mr. Rand was already dead... but I don't want to consider that. We must hope he is still alive and there is still a chance to save him
Cyrus the Flea |
Cyrus loses his breath as the enchanting woman greets them.
This is some deja-vu... Maybe its just all the aasimars I have seen in my time as a pathfinder. Yea, thats the same tingly feeling I get.... Gotta be the aasimars.
Cyrus finds a way to hide his oogling by letting the other Keleshite in the group take the attention.
"If he did have to leave a secret message about his hiding place, where would he leave it? Do you know if there was anything he was researching, or people he was working with? We don't even really know where to start, and asking about mechanical creatures might tip our hand and alert the enemy. I would keep your guards on high alert. Chances are if they find out this is the place to attack, you won't see it coming."
Cyrus fidgets with his hands, secretly hoping he has impressed the enchanting woman.
Finarin Moonstep |
Arriving a bit late, Finarin is dressed like any other well dressed here in Nantambu. He would easily be mistaken for a tribal leader, or a merchant of renown, except for the fact that his prominent ears tell everyone he is an elf.
As he strides into the room, his billowy clothes make a faint 'Swish Swish' sound.
"Ahh, Aya. have we met ... before? You seem familiar, and that is odd in ... our line of work. One would think the life of a pathfinder agent .... glamorous. Unfortunately, that is a bit of hyperbole. We often find ourselves trudging through sewers .... and other foul places all to recover long-forgotten trinkets that our superiors deem .... valuable. Yet her we find a ... true treasure." Finarin ends his long-winded speech with a slight flourish of his head.
"Lord Finarin Moonstep my lady. My companions have gotten to the ...heart of the matter. I fear I have ... little to add. If time permits, I would like to explore .... Magaambya"
Kn Arcana: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31
"Oh and Ibid, I think that you forgot to add to add."
Legends provide few details of the fate of Old- Mage Jatembe, however, there are those who believed he was actually an incarnation of Nethys, the All-Seeing God of Magic.
"Nethys, that uncaring bastard and I ... might have some things to talk about."
GM Karma |
Aya listens to Ibid coming into his conclusion in silence, her face turning mournful. "This is what I fear as well. If Arvellos is in the hands of the League, I think it is just the matter of time before he reveals the Society's existence in Nantambu, and its involvement with the book. Please,Find Arvellos. Make sure he is safe and ensure he has not exposed the Society’s purchase to the Technic League."
"Cyrus, was it? I am afraid I do not know Arvellos' movements. I am just a business partner to Nieford, so I am not so familiar with your field agents. I do not even know where Arvellos got the damned book!" Aya looks a bit frustrated for a moment, and then seems to calm down. "I am sorry about that. I understand the book is very valuable to your organization. I am just a bit nervous when my operations here are in danger. As to your question, young Cyrus, you will have to do some legwork. Nantambu is not that big of a city, someone must have seen something. But please be discreet." As Aya speaks, she locks her radiant golden eyes on Cyrus, who in turn starts to feel a bit weak in the knees.
"I do have guards, yes. But they are trained to deal with pickpockets and enterprising burglars, and not a full assault from a dangerous organization such the Technic League. The lodge does have two guardians, but unfortunately they currently lack key components to properly function. That wooden statue we passed on the way in is actually a wood golem. All it takes is the essence of a baobab sapling’s root and a small ritual to reactivate it. In Nieford’s office hangs a suit of Zenj ceremonial armor that, when fitted with a special black diamond from the Brazen Peaks, animates and will defend this lodge to the best of its abilities. I know of at least three merchants in town who are likely to have such a gem. Getting them functional would greatly fortify the lodges defences. I also know several powerful merchants in Nantambu who would support our cause. If you have time, you could persuade them offering aid in these times."
"Still our best defence is secrecy. If they don't know we are here, we are safe. If the Technic League is indeed in Nantambu, we need to make sure they don’t learn of the Pathfinder Society’s presence or involvement in the book’s acquisition. Maybe you could plant rumors across the city of someone else’s involvement."
Haafiz |
"Well, it looks like setting the Lodge to rights should be our first priority," Haafiz notes with a comfortable smile, "If our other activities attract the wrong kind of attention, it would be good to know our home base is safe. We can search for clues around Nantambu, and spread false information, after that. What do you think?"
Haafiz turns to the other Pathfinders to see if they agree with his assessment.
Gunari Maximoff |
"Sure, we could go get the things we need to activate the statue and the armor. That sounds like a good enough plan. Maybe the gem first, and then we can go get some of the essense? Aya, does the lodge have funds for us to use to procure such things?"
FYI - GM Karma - Gunari has 40gp available to use on services and bribes through his sczarni boon
Finarin Moonstep |
"Haafiz, I believe that your plan is a ... sound one. Unless anyone has any objections ... I would like to begin at once,"
Ibid. Oxley Abel |
"Aye," the old man agrees, nodding first toward Haafiz and then toward Finarin. "It's a sound plan, Haafiz. I fear time isn't on our side, but at least we're starting off with all of our gear this time..."

Ibid, the walking encyclopedia, knows that baobab trees are native to this region. In order to find one, the group should head southwards, travelling along one of the tributaries of Vanji river. The old man cannot exactly estimate how far they should go, but most likely it’ll take a couple of hours.
Meanwhile, Aya writes down a list of jewellers in the city, who might be in possession of this black diamond from Brazen Peaks.
Which way you’ll go first?
Also, Ibid might want to survey the lodge for his faction at some point…
Haafiz |
"It may be best to stay in the city for the first of our tasks. After all, if something goes wrong, best for us to be here than away," Haafiz notes, "Once the lodge has at least one functioning guardian, it will be a better time to leave. Ibid, you seem to be looking around... shall we inspect the Lodge before we go?"
Suggesting jewelers first. Happy to help Ibid inspect the lodge.
Gunari Maximoff |
"I agree. And merchants are also something I very well understand. I've recruited two already! Besides, I need to make a purchase here, anyway." (The Exchange has a faction goal of making purchases in towns away from Absalom)
"I am sure that we'll do just fine... haven't found a merchant I couldn't talk down to half his asking price. Ok, ten to fifteen percent off... at the least.
"Again, Aya, do we have any funds to purchase these gems, or do we need to pay for it out of our personal cash?" He shudders when he says those words.

Before leaving the lodge...
"Thank you for the assistance, Haafiz. You're help is most appreciated surveying this place," the old man says, pulling his journal from his bag and documenting a few notes. He details the guardian's he and his companions will shortly put into working order, then proceeds to document the general layout of the place. When he has completed a sweep of the area, he then details the instructions required by one wishing to to even enter the lodge proper, and includes a description of how well disguised the secret location is as it would appear to an untrained eye. Lastly, Ibid tries to gather small details regarding the day to day life and duties needed to keep the place running smoothy, and any knows issues Aya has been troubled to deal with in order to lodge in order, all the while hoping his questions will not upset their kind host.
Please let me know if Ibid needs to attempt any specific checks to survey the lodge.
"The plan sounds perfect to me," Ibid says after he and Haafiz finish examine the place. "Thank you again for the help, Haafiz. Let's go speak to some jewelers and get one of these guardians in working order before any unwanted attention comes our way."

A careful audit performed by the professional Pathfinders Ibid and Haafiz, reveals that the Lodge is in fairly good shape - it can comfortably host 12 agents at a time, and it’s armory can equip the agents for field missions. As is proper, its library contains a wealth of knowledge, especially on subjects relating to the Mwangi Expanse. Only the lodge’s defences are not quite up to the expected standard. Ibid thinks at least one of the construct guardians should be reactivated.
Let me know if you want to know any room in more detail, or search any room more thoroughly. Here are some interesting ones:
Beyond the primary structure’s stone doors, the grand foyer of the inner building welcomes merchants from all over Golarion. The room is decorated with Mwangi cultural items and dominated by two large preserved reptiles. The large lizard in the southwest corner is a giant frilled lizard and the creature in the northwest corner is a pachycephalosaurus A massive compass rose with ivory inlay dominates the center of the floor.
Venture-Captain Nieford Sharrowsmith’s personal office is used to entertain some of Nantambu’s most influential residents. It doubles as a planning room for launching Pathfinder Society activities in the region. A massive oak table occupies much of the room. Several maps lay spread out on its surface, revealing areas of the Mwangi Expanse south of Nantambu. make Kn. (geography) roll to know more.
Sharrowsmith’s desk sits nestled in the corner of the room. All that remains on his desk is a ledger detailing recent transactions consistent with preparing to supply an extended expedition for a large group of agents.
Hanging on the west wall is a 20-foot-wide silken tapestry of a large city on the banks of a vast river. Shimmering silver thread depicts a ruined visage of the city superimposed on the image below, creating the appearance of a city at once both whole and desolated. Make a Kn. (history or geography) roll to know more
The suit of Zenj ceremonial armor on display in the northeast corner of the office is an animated object missing a particular type of black diamond control gem.
This passage serves as the main entrance for Society members and their allies heading to and from the bazaar. The room is lit by a single continual flame torch and has two exits, an obvious door to the west (area A7) and a hidden door in the eastern wall, leading to area A4.
An inert wood golem stands motionless in the passage. The construction is missing a vital component found only in select regions of the Mwangi jungles.
The Nantambu lodge is famous for its expansive collection containing thousands of volumes on the Mwangi Expanse, rivaled in the region only by the libraries of the nearby Magaambya. A large wooden decagon table with the Glyph of the Open road engraved into its surface occupies the center of the room. A secret door in the eastern wall leads to area A5.
Characters who spend an hour studying in the library gain a +10 circumstance bonus on a single Knowledge or Survival check relating to the Mwangi Expanse made within 24 hours of such study. A character may benefit from this bonus only once per day, regardless of how many hours she spends studying.
The Nantambu lodge’s armory still houses weapons, shields, and a few suits of armor. The Pathfinders can find any simple or martial weapon, any light shield or light suit of armor in the room (none of this equipment is masterwork, magical, or made from special materials). Additionally, they find a cache of adventuring gear left behind by Sharrowsmith.
You can rummage through the goods and each find any one piece of equipment listed on Table 6-9 on page 158 of the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook, so long as it is valued at less than 150 gp. They are free to use these items throughout the adventure, but any item not expended is returned to the lodge at the adventure’s conclusion.
——
”Good luck” Aya wishes as the group is starting to leave. ”I’m afraid I don’t have the liquid assets right now to help you to purchase the jewel, so you’ll have to manage on your own.”
I’ll make a suggestion for marching order in campaign info tab, please check if it’s acceptable. Then make a Diplomacy check to see how fast you find the right merchant
Cyrus the Flea |
Cyrus helps where he can in the assessment of the lodge, but his attention is not focused on the task at hand. He flits between his enchantment with the Aasimar woman, and the distraction of the things he has learned. As such, his aid leaves much to be desired.
Once they are out of the office and searching for a merchant, Cyrus confidently moves out ahead.
"All of these bazaars are the same, whether they are in an Osirion desert city or in the Mwangi Jungle. The merchants are crooks and will take you for every penny you have if they can. Let's just see if I remember how to deal with them without spending to much money..."
Cyrus begins to go from place to place, striking up seemingly idle chatter, but he hopes helps him narrow down a proper merchant. All the while he asks about the rumors dealing with the shady men and mechanical monstrosities that so many people are talking about. He drops random tidbits as he speaks, spreading rumors about a secret aspis consortium hide-out and a recently acquired, very powerful book.
"Yes yes, up town I think. Or was it east of town? I dunno, I just heard some skinny little garundi, even smaller than me, talking about something. He did a terrible job of keeping his aspis badge hidden. No no, just some book. I didn't catch the full name. Silver ropes maybe? Yea, here is a gold. Thanks for the tip on the jewel merchant. My girl back in Absalom is going to love it. And don't tell anyone about the silver rope book thingy. Nobody can know..." He says. He chuckles as he walks away. Requiring something like that to be a secret is like dropping blood in water and trying to keep it from spreading out. Impossible. Even if it is mostly lies.
Diplomacy or know (local): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Cyrus' bluff check is +12 if that is appropriate for spreading false rumors about the book's location. That check also likely won't help us find a jeweler very fast, so hopefully someone gets a better roll. If there is an option to bribe/pay people for faster info, Cyrus is interested in doing so to help grease the wheels. Anything to get these defenses up ASAP...
GM Karma |
Oh, if you want to spread the rumors first, that'll take one hour. Story-wise you can do it while looking for the diamond, but mechanically it will take additional time. Success is determined by a bluff check
Lightfoot Raven |
Arriving from the docks fashionably late, though slightly flustered, the half elf Raven wanders the market square, slipping between stalls, avoiding conversation, searching for his contact.
He looks unassuming - plain, dark traveling clothes and a well worn backpack, dark hair cut sharply that stays in place just so, even in the heat. The only thing that stands out is the spear across his back: an odd style, light and springy, with multiple dangerous blades on the end.
Drunk Varisian Warpriest... drunk Varisian Warpriest... Oh, and his damn mug. Air Keys and Metallic Fabrics and annoying devices that don't like being disabled... something like that. Hopefully they can lead me to the local lodge to get a proper briefing. That stoned elf is hardly ever any help...
As he travels, he keeps his keen senses alert for signs of fellow Pathfinders: obvious wayfinders, of course, but also intimidation-negotiation, random brawls, and excessive magic use. If he was sent, that also meant there's probably 3-5 of them heavily armed.
Haafiz |
Haafiz has a +11 bluff. I can aid or make my own roll as seems appropriate. Unless we're not allowed to, we might as well take 10 on it.
"Hey! Lightfoot, is it not?" Haafiz calls out from the window he is inspecting, "My name is Haafiz al'Mahir. I recognize you from the briefing notes. Welcome to Sharrowsmith Exports. Come in!"
Haafiz isn't capable of or interested in learning anything further. He won't take anything from the armory just yet (I'm assuming we can return to the armory later) and will head out to speak to jewelers soon.
Lightfoot Raven |
Lightfoot looks up surprised, obviously not as inconspicuous as he was intending. He nods to the man in the window, working his way to the door and in, taking in the strange business/lodge slowly and carefully as he seeks the man who called him. He stands just a bit outside of normal conversation range when he finds him, looking him up and down.
"Haafiz was it? Call me Raven, please. This is an interesting lodge. I assume we've secured the book in question? Are we ready to transport it? Is the lodge being watched?" Lightfoot seems wary, moving toward a window, glancing outside. "And the others? The drunk one I was told to find here?"
Speaking quickly, enunciating sharply, glancing here and there, it's clear why Raven isn't sent to the fancy dinners.
Gunari Maximoff |
"So, without our usual 'face' of Miro, I guess it is I who gets to do the talking! Well, fantabulicious! I'll not let my team down.
"Raven, you say. We're just about to set out on a little shopping trip. Mind if I see your wayfinder? Just wanna make sure you're all legit and everything. I hear you had a little fun up in Molthune recently?"
Totally within his realm, the priest of the Drunken Hero makes his way around the bazaar, discretely trying to discern the location of the merchants.

If possible, he'll use enhance diplomacy to add an additional +2 to this check. Aid another attempts would also be appropriate!
"By any chance, my good man, er, elf... er elf-man... how's your singing voice? I am kind of missing our friend, Miro Ammars, who always inspired us to do great things. I expect nothing less from you!'
He thinks a moment... "Oh, hey! Did that annoying Aasimar fellow send you anything? Alluicious or something? The guy that saved Lort? I was expecting a shipment from the Storval plateau expedition... a minor talisman of some sort."
Ibid. Oxley Abel |
Before leaving the lodge...
The old man leans in close to examine the maps scattered aimlessly about massive oak table in Sharrowsmith's office.

After looking over the maps, and gleaning what information he can, Ibid stands back a few paces from the west wall. With one finger placed over his mouth he looks on in deep thought, and stares upon the 20-foot-wide silken tapestry. The large city brilliantly depicted on the banks of the vast yet unknown river draws his attention and he tries to place its location, in order to further comprehend the more frightening superimposed image of the settlement's destruction.

"Well met Lightfoot. I am Lord Finarin Moonstep. Though you may refer to me in the familiar ... Lord Moonstep. I look forward to sharing many adventures with one as .... cultured as you. As for shirts, I have quite a few local purveyors that can assist you should you choose to shun your .... barechestedness."
On the streets
Though his physical appearance is vastly different than the local inhabitants, Finarin being a loyal member of the Sovereign court, knows where and how to find items required by the nobility. He continually gives Gunari pointers and tips on how to deal with those more affluent than the common beer swilling crowd.

@Ibid:
With just a quick glance, Ibid easily identifies one of the maps on Sharrowsmith's table as an early exploration of northern Sargava. But the silken tapestry is a harder challenge for the senior investigator. He stares long at the image of the ruined city, following the silver thread closely, and trying to look at the picture from afar. But to his shock, he has no idea what could the city so badly desolated.

Anyone else to aid in the Diplomacy roll?
"This person humbly apologizes for not having this Black Diamond you look for. But have many other diamonds! You buy for wife, yes? No? Lover, then? I have just the necklace, veeery beautiful. Special price, only for you, my friend!" After a few red herrings, and many tight escapes from over-enthusiastic jewel-salesmen, the group starts looking for the next merchant in the list - a man by the name Uzoma. At least that is easy, since he lives in one of the few permanent structures in the city. The Pathfinder approach the shop, a small clay brick building. And from within come the sounds of a loud, one-sided discussion. "You still owe 1,000 gold, Uzoma, you’ve had an extra week to pay up. Now where’s the money?"
You're still outside the door, and cannot see who's talking to who

Haafiz |
"Haafiz was it? Call me Raven, please. This is an interesting lodge. I assume we've secured the book in question? Are we ready to transport it? Is the lodge being watched?" Lightfoot seems wary, moving toward a window, glancing outside. "And the others? The drunk one I was told to find here?"
"Raven, apologies," Haafiz bows obsequiously, "Valsin, as ever, pays little heed to personal details like 'preferred name' in his briefing notes. The book is unfortunately not here, and neither is the agent who secured it. We are helping to set the Lodge to rights before investigating his disappearance. Gunari - the drunk one - and the others are already asking around town. Join him if you like, I'll be there when we've finished this Spring clean. Though it is hard to tell that it is Spring in all this heat, is it not?"
Later... assuming Haafiz gets there in enough time to help (after surveying the lodge with Ibid)...
Haafiz also helps with the diplomacy, "And it is not just the financial side of the equation - we can make sure you are on very good terms with Sharrowsmith exports. Having such a reputable company to help with shipping and so forth will be most useful, yes?"
Aid Gunari, diplomacy: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28
At Uzoma's...
"Looks like a chance to help out!" Haafiz grins, "Can we safely assume this is a protection racket? Head in with weapons drawn?" The group is perhaps used to Lort just rushing in. His Keleshi replacement seems a little more circumspect - though he is no less ready for a fight.
Ibid. Oxley Abel |
I wonder what city is depicted in that tapestry, Ibid thinks, a little lost in thought, finding his mind straying from the task at hand. He is suddenly snapped out of his musings by Haafiz's comments about entering, with force, to see what commotion is is rising regarding this yet unknown Uzoma.
"If you think it's wise, Haafiz," Ibid says, unslinging his longbow from his shoulders. "I'll follow your lead and cover you, if necessary."
"But please try to have this situation resolve itself without violence, if possible."
Where is Miro and his honeyed words when you need him? the old man thinks, tightening his grip on the bow and nodding to the others that he is ready to enter the building. Miro could talk down anyone.
Lightfoot Raven |
Raven reaches into his sleeve, of the shirt that he is wearing, and produces a black wayfinder embossed with a raven in flight, the symbol of The Lost Prince.
"I assume this will do?" he asks, holding it out for Gunari's inspection. "Well met Lord Moonstep." he replies shortly, raising an eyebrow at the elf, realizing he also must not be invited to the fancy dinners... at least not to speak.
Taking notes from Haafiz, Raven will join Gunari in the markets.
"Not much of a singer, really. Though the halflings on the way here certainly were. Allandar sends his regards from Varisia. It seems there is much commotion happening there. He was able to bring me here as he was picking up a few Pathfinders for yet another mission for the Heidmarchs." Raven's eyes dart here and there in the marketplace, watching for pickpockets, exposed purses, followers, danger, and jewel salesman. As he walks, he reaches into his shirt once more and produces a pouch. Within, a few coins jingle together, along with a talisman that he places into Gunari's hand. "A fascinating item, I must tell you."
At Uzoma's...
Under his breath Raven responds to Haafiz: "While protection and other services are part of a delicate social balance, violence would be distasteful on their part." Raven's eyes glance up and down Haafiz, a bit confused, before remembering: Of course. Some people still must draw weapons to fight.
Gunari Maximoff |
"Uzoma, old friend," Gunari says, barging into the conversation, seemingly oblivious to the tension in the room. "What's going on? Do you have the merchandise we've talked about?"
He gives a big smile, pushing his way into the middle of things. "Friends, what's going on here?"

Finarin Moonstep |
Earlier, upon hearing Haafiz.
Turning to Raven, "Ah my .... apologies if I misspoke. So it is ... Raven, and not Lightfoot. I will take note of that."
Ah and here we go Gunari
Finarin walks in behind Gunari, "Uzoma ... I have little patience for this type of nonsense. Please ask these .... gentlemen to depart so we may conduct our business. I have much and many things to do today ... and any delay is costing me. You know how much I hate it when things ... cost too much."

Haafiz |
"So, my friends," Haafiz smiles broadly at whoever is in the shop, "What is the matter here? One week does not sound like a long enough time for one to come up with one thousand gold pieces - even a jewel merchant like Uzoma here. Did you know that people are sold into slavery for much less. My blade here is worth more than a man's life, it seems. Such a shame that so little value is placed on life these days.
"Perhaps a little more time for this man to pay his debts, yes?" Haafiz leaves no doubt in anyone's mind that he fully intends to follow up the niceties with a threat... followed by showing them exactly why a good sword costs more than a man's life: it can take so many of them.

Haafiz kicks the door open, and arrives to a scene where a rough-looking man is grabbing a better-dressed gentleman by his robes, and grinning wide enough to show all seven of his teeth. Alerted by the sudden intrusion, the man turns his head toward the inquisitor, looking annoyed of the intrusion.
”Now who the fück are you?! In case you haven’t noticed, I’m in a middle of a business negotiation here.” However, straight after Haafiz's stormy entrance, Gunari flies into the room, and flashes his most disarming smile. The man seems to relax a bit, and releases the merchant. ”Ahem. I’m Tuma, and I run a legitimate business of loaning money to those in need. Being a loan, I except them to pay back. In time. And his is overdue. And I don’t care how you do business in wherever the fück you’re from, but I’m not leaving until I get the money he owes me.”
The shop is small, and it really doesn’t help that besides Tuma and Uzoma, there is also three other armed men. Judging by their style (or lack of it), they are obviously Tuma’s lackeys. The trio put their hands on their weapons, but leave them undrawn for now. Maybe they don’t share their leader’s confidence against a sword-swinging maniac.
Uzoma looks in turn to Gunari, Haafiz, Tuma and the ruffians, trying to figure out what is going on.
Haafiz |
"That does sound most reasonable," Haafiz nods, "But I have met with loan sharks before. The legitimate ones who are not extorting their clients with unreasonable terms tend not to need three armed men in order to collect. They usually are able to resolve matters more amicably."
Before Tuma can respond, Haafiz turns to Uzoma, "Uzoma, perhaps you would like to share your version of events with us," says Haafiz calmly, "Do not fear these men, we will back you up. The truth would be most advisable in this situation."
Haafiz keeps his weapon drawn but doesn't swing it around or point it in any kind of threatening manner.
Gunari Maximoff |
"Tuma, far be it for me to interfere with legitimate business. In fact, that's why we are here right now! Why, I believe that if you give us ten minutes to discuss things with Uzoma, here, we can all leave happy. If you wouldn't mind stepping out for a moment so we can discuss business, I would be greatly appreciative! In fact, my friend, I'll even give you a tasty beverage or two to make the time pass all the faster.
"Oh, and I know that you'll want some collateral, in case we're trying to pull a fast one on you. You can take our half-elf friend here with you. He goes by the name of Raven. We disappear, you do with him as you will!"
Gunari pours a couple of tankards full of beer, as well as his pitcher, and allows the ruffians to take them, assuming he Tuma agrees.
"So, Ozuma, we don't have much time, so I will keep it simple. We have need of a special black diamond. We understand you have one. Now, I am sure you'll be telling us some story about how much it is worth. But neither of us has time for that. Let's cut to the chase... do you have the stone, and how much will it be. Remember, time is of the essence, and my friend Haafiz, here, is not a patient man."

Cyrus the Flea |
AAaaahhh!!! Been very much looking forward to delving back into this character. Sorry I haven't been able to dig into what is going on yet all that much. Things should be returning to normal now that I am back home, so hopefully some good old fashioned ninja goodies for everyone to share.
Ok - quick clarification, I am assuming we are out looking for the gem while Ibid catalogues the pathfinder outpost? I'm not sure how much we can overlap, but it seems Meta-Obvious that we have a limited amount of time. I just want to make sure we are all on the same page with knowing how much time we have used so far.
While the group is all still there.
Cyrus focuses his mind, putting away the constant barrage of thoughts that are distracting him, and clears out everything except the task at hand. It seemed someone was being pushed around, bullied you might say.
The keleshite ninja steps forward in the confusion.
"Hey now. Why don't we all stop pretending like we are having a bad day, and just acknowledge that this is the kind of thing that churns our butter, if you know what I mean, right? This is fun, isn't it? You guys walk around, you shake down the people you need to get your money back. If you didn't like it, you wouldn't loan the money out. Be honest, seriously, why the $*%( would you go through all that trouble if you didn't like getting it back? Don't even try to tell me its a lucrative business, this place is a hell hole. If it was that good you certainly wouldn't be living here."
"So you like loaning money out so you can shake a few people down. Well I do what I do because it turns out I like that I am really good at cutting people's hearts out. Kinda creepy, I know, but that is a pretty lucrative business. Seems like its a Keleshite thing, because Haafiz here is even better at it."
"So now that we got that out of the way, and we are all on the same page, lets have a look at what we have here. What we have here is none of my damned business. Or these guys. I don't care if you are shaking him down legitimately or not. I don't really care if the jeweler is matchstick man. All I know is I want a gem. And I am going to get it. Maybe I'll pay for it, maybe I won't. Maybe me and my buddies will do Cap-ee-tan Tuma the loan shark here a little favor, and Uzoma's debt goes away, while I get my prize. Voila, everyone is happy."
"One way or another, I'm going to get what I came in here for. Chances are I am going to cut someone in the process. I don't really give a $*%& who I cut, because what is going on here is none of my $&$%ing business. Ball is in your court hotshot. Whaddya say?"
Offering to do a favor for Tuma so he can forgive Uzoma's debt, in return for Uzoma giving us the gem.
Baaahahahahaha. Cyrus has lettuce in his teeth. /sigh
Lightfoot Raven |
Raven sighs, waiting outside the shop, leaning against the wall next to the door and surveying the crowd, watching for anyone he might need to keep away from the... negotiation.
Let the ruffians be ruffians, sweep in when the timing is right.
Raven considers his spear for a moment, but keeps it tucked away. His ears twitch when he hears his name mentioned.
Yes, Allandar was right. This man is crude. But apparently effective. Let's see how this one plays out..
Since Raven has been offered up, but I have not yet entered/spoken, and in a fight I am better off unnoticed, I'd like to make a stealth check, if that's functional, against the men inside.
Stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

I added the map of the shop to tactical. Imagine there is already five men inside, and each of you squeezing in to have your say :)
Tuma snorts loudly, once again flashing a grin wide enough to display his sparse teeth. "Ha! And if I didn't rough up all the idiots 'forgetting' to pay me back, I'd be out of business pretty soon. And I'm in the business to make money, and collecting the money just happens to be part of it. As I said, I run a legitimate business, and I'm not the one here busting through doors with weapons drawn. I should report you to the authorities for such threats."
"But I am a reasonable man. You deal your business with Uzoma first, and once done, he better have the money he owes me. I'll be waiting outside." A defiant look on his face, Tuma heads to the door, and the three lackeys follow him out.
Uzoma, clearly relieved, picks up a cloth from his pocket and wipes away the sweat from his brow. "Thank you, gentlemen, whoever you are. It is most unfortunate you had to witness such affair. A while ago I had to turn to Tuma to get some funds to purchase a cache of gems I couldn't have otherwise afforded. Unfortunately I couldn't find a buyer for them before the terms of the loan expired."
Still very nervous, the merchant eyes warily at Haafiz's drawn blade. "Now, how can I help you?"
Finarin Moonstep |
GM what happened to Finarin? I know Lort/Haafiz & Gunari are loudest, but we'd all like a seat at the table
"Ahh yes, Master Uzoma. It seems that are arrival have been quite .... fortuitous. I am Lord FInarin Moonstep and these are my companions Gunari, Cyrus, and Haafiz.
It seems that the table is set for a perfect .... negotiation. You seem to have something we require .... a black diamond to be precise. We seemed to have just saved you from a what did that man say? Oh yes, a 'roughing up.' My companions are skilled negotiators, and do love a ... haggle. How much to procure such an item? And Uxoma, don't forget our discount. I .... hate to lose money."
