Jaender shrugs his shoulders at the expected detour. They had heard that this cleric enjoys his time at the bar, though he would have felt foolish to check all of those haunts before finding him back here...

"while we are here, milady, since we are relatively new, is there anything about your esteemed temple here that you might be able to share with us that we wouldn't hear from the general public? We seem to be getting on a roll of helping done folk around here, particularly in the accursed halls. Should you require assistance, we are here to help."

Jaender dips into a bow, trying to do his best impersonation of artuto's style. Who knows, maybe big, strong women are just looking for a little someone to take care of, and Jaender was not tall by any means.

She thinks a moment, and says, "Somebody keeps making a racket at the old Callanro Home at night these past few weeks. I know it’s just some pesky kids wrecking stuff in an abandoned old house, but the noises still keep me up at night and I wish they’d just cut it out."

After that, the group goes to the Thirsty Ogre. You walk in, to see a tall half-orc woman (Toomdar) watches you come in. She looks tougher than your strong guy, and gives you all only a moment's notice as if she's already sized you up, and found you all wanting. She has an eye patch on her left eye, and has a noticeable limp. Behind the bar is a fat, grumpy bear of a man (Red) who is cleaning the tankards. Belly up to the bar is a middle aged dwarf, with a formidable looking greatsword strapped to his back. A trio of goblins are playing knucklebones at a table near the back.

The woman looks back at you all. [b]"Adventurers, eh? Here to stir up trouble, have a drink, or both?"[b]

"Trouble, you magnificently tusked beauty? I think not," says Arturo with a flourish as he takes up next to her, "We are here to solve troubles. Why, only this afternoon we put troubles to rest. Only, of course, with the aid of Ophiuchus the Mighty (that reptilian fellow you see behind me). Oh, his bravery knows no bounds - but neither does his ability to spin a story! Pray do not let us leave here before he has shared with you a tale or few.

"Now, as for me, I am a thirsty man with many thirsts," Arturo changes the subject while simultaneously setting the pitch of his voice to sultry. The dashing rogue produces a small, fragile ball from a pocket. Its surface is a shiny smooth mirror tinged in red and it has a small, golden string looped so that it may be hung from something, "I picked up this trinket in town earlier. It's curved surface shows the loveliness that is yourself as well as the beauty all around you. If you hang it from, say, a beam or the branch of a tree, it will spin and catch the light in delightful ways."

Arturo gives Toomdar the trinket with a smile, "So, what time do you think your business will be concluded? Do you have company for tonight?"

Mery Christmas!

Fury's Toll | MotD

Toomdar laughs, and slugs Arturo in the shoulder, pushing him back some with the force of it. "Ha, ha, ha. Been some time since I was propositioned so." She takes the trinket, and tosses it back to the barkeep. "If you can outlast me tonight, maybe you will get lucky. If not, well, then I'll have your silver, and your bauble. Red! Hang that thing up, and we'll see if Mr. Adventurer can handle what we have to throw at him.

"What do you say, Mr. Adventurer. You put up your gold, I choose the drinks, which we'll both enjoy, and if you are still standing when I close this place down, you can join me for another adventure?

"Hey, Red, we still got that small keg of Vjarik in back?"

So this is how I die...

"Sure thing, fair maiden! Let the drinking commence!" cries Arturo with bravado that he most definitely does not feel.

Just let me know the "rules" and let's do this!

Dark Archive

Fury's Toll | MotD

[ooc]rules? Arturo has to drink (and buy) everything that Toomdar drinks. Will probably end up being Fort saves... To start with, you will be able to drink a number of drinks equal to your con modifier +1 before you get sickened (I.e., Drunk). For there, we'll be doing fort saves for you not to pass out, with increasing DCs)

"Fair maiden... You could not be more wrong on both counts!" laughs Red from behind the bar. "Aye, we have some Vjarik, but a I ain't going back to get it quite yet. Besides, I though you were saving it, Toomdar, to clean the brass on the bat?"

"I guess that's true, Red, so why don't we just start out with something cheap, and more along the lines of what an adventurer might be drinking. Give us a couple tankards of the house ale, with a double double measure of Daggermark Drip. We got a cask of that in yesterday, did we not?"

"Ayes, that we did, lassie. You think the boy's up for it?

Liberty's Edge

Male Human (Varisian) Level 6, #-4

Drunk after only two ales? That's some strong "drip". Gulp!!! Of course, Arturo is going to cheat.

"Wrong?" balks Arturo, falsely offended, "My dear Toomdar, I'll have you know that 'maiden' is an honorary title I bestow upon any woman I deem worthy... and whether or not one is 'fair' is entirely the business of the eyes of the beholder. Now, how shall we get this started? One of us first or both together?"

"I am very thirsty. I would like to drink too." Ophiuchus takes a mug, and tries to take a sip without the liquid touching his 'mustache'. He tips his head to the right, and then back to the left. He finally decides to raise the mug over his head, open his mouth as wide as it can go, and tips the mug so the liquid drips into his mouth, face, and clothes.

After finishing he turns to Toomdar, "I am Ophiuchus the nagaji. This is my friend, Mr. Hairylip. Although we look very similar, like twins some have said, we are not twins. Big man that sings so beautifully, please sing us a bawdy bar song about drinking too much and wooing fair maidens. Be careful Toomdar or Mr. Hairylips will ask you to be his wife and wash his underclothes while he smokes his pipe."

"Thank you for the kind introduction, my friend," says the swashbuckler graciously, "Perhaps you can join us for a few drinks once you're done with your tale and have the aid you require." Arturo turns back to the barkeep pouring the drinks, a growing sense of dread filling his stomach.

The young man looks around in alarm as things have quickly escalated. This seemed...unwise. He squints his eyes as he looks at the half-orc, then to Arturo, then back to the half-orc before he turns his gaze away. First the quite...large woman, now this obvious hulking mess of a woman. The man was quite impartial when it came to women, it would seem. Maybe the brute needed to experience things from the swashbuckler's perspective a bit, to get a more...broad approach to the ladies.

"Three... two... one... GO!" Arturo chugs down the first beverage, strongly encouraging those around him to drink at the same time. His stomach curls in a most unpleasant fashion. Oh dear Desna, what have I done?

Realizing that he has one, maybe two, more of these before he decorates the bar with the contents of his stomach, Arturo makes ready to "drink" the next one by setting his mug on the table behind him and standing very close to it. He stands slightly to the side as the barkeep hands him his mug, between him and the half-orc, and the newly arranged table.

"Three... two... one... GO!" as they pull back their drinks with him, Arturo allow the foul liquid to enter his mouth, but leans back in an exaggerated fashion and angles his face towards the mug, effectively pouring his drink into the vessel he emptied earlier.

Trying sleight of hand to avoid drinking! Opposed by her perception, I guess.

Fury's Toll | MotD

Not to cut down on the drinking escapades, we'll sum this up quickly... so that we can finish this by the end of the game day.

To Arturo's dismay, the drinking contest is never the same drink twice, making his antics more difficult. The rather harsh boilermaker is followed by glasses of Applejack, a vile brew called Brow Brew from Numeria. In fact, it is so vile, that Arturo has to be clever so as to not have to drink it (Toomdar perception to notice his sleight of hand: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10,Red perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13). The next round is a goblin brew, which Arturo is able to stomach... but not for long.

Finally, after several rounds of small beer and other ales, Toomdar says, "It is time, Red." Arturo is already swaying a little in his chair, the room is spinning from all he's already drank. Red disappears into the back, and brings back two glasses (this is surprising in and of itself, as most of the other drinks were served in tin tankards, and the like). The clear liquid inside has a slightly blue tint to it, and even with the small glass, the fumes are enough to clear one's sinuses.

Red sets them down, and asks that all flames be extinguished near the table. "On three! One, two, three!" The two bang the glasses on the table with each count, and then they slam down the drink more reminiscent of paint thinner than a drink. It is no wonder that this is used as an anesthetic by the Ulfens who distill it.
(Arturo fort save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6Toomdar fort save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21)

Unfortunately for poor Arturo, his drink does not stay down, and he sprays everyone at the table (which explains why the fires were extinguished around the table). Toomdar keeps hers down, and chuckles at the spray. "Brother Eldrast, can you check to see if the poor adventurer is still ok?" she asks.

The dwarf that has been hanging out at the bar, quietly drinking comes over. With a gravelly voice, he says, "The fool will be ok. His friends ought to get him back to his room, 'ere he loses more than just this contest."

Toomdar helps Arturo back to his feat, handing him off to his friends. "A valient effort, my friend. Perhaps when you can come back with a story or two to tell about the Accursed Halls. Maybe you'll have a scar or two to show off by then!" she whispers into his ear. In the morning, he'll swear that she gave him a peck on the cheek, but no one can collaborate if that happened.

Poochie... the dwarf is the one you want to talk to!"

If a fierce warrior kills things, than I am fierce. If a fierce warrior kills things that were dead and now live, then I am fierce. If a fierce warrior swims in the dark, than I am fierce. I ask you, what is fierce? For I am here now with my friends because I could not defend my Merian, my love, once long ago. I have absolutely no issues sharing chronicle gold to help restore Ophiuchus. Arturo will replace his holy water with two more vials if he is able (and I'll mark it appropriately on my ITS).

"So, fellows, everyone feeling rested?" asks an obviously groggy Arturo, trying his hardest to be cheery, "I'd love to get back down and hug some things that once were dead but that now fight us until we make them dead again. Should help clear out the buzzing in my head, if nothing else!"

"That was a good night's rest. Wow Arturo, you look... well at least you have your breeches on." Jaender says with a wry smile.

"I agree, back to the halls we go. Lets see if we can't get some more answers for the people in this town. Plus, I think we might be able to figure out how to open that door of seven stars that the wizards have struggled with so much..."

I also will happily chip in from the collective chronicle gold to pay for the resto spells.

You are welcome to purchase mundane and/or alchemical items in Thornkeep. Prestige purchases fall under the +5PP realm here, and most magic is unavailable. Just post what you are buying, and we'll make sure it gets on your chrons and ITS.

The team does some quick shopping, and ends up back in the two story room where you fought the goblins. You have two directions you have not gone yet. First is the locked door that Roudi, Vox, and Einhardt are standing by, second are the stairs that Arturo, Poochie, and Jaender are waiting by.

Which way would you like to go?

"Just a suggestion here, but what say we try to see if these gems we have are the key to opening this door? My curiosity is almost overwhelming..."

the completionist in me wants to make sure we go both ways, so it doesn't really matter to me what way we go..

A moment later, Vox draws his lucerne hammer and signals for Einhardt be on her guard, should Ophiuchus succeed at opening the door.

I was thinking of the door on the upper level, but you can try this one.

Where do you want to put your gems? Remember, there are seven spots, but you have only four gems, I believe.

Realizing that they are short of gems, Arturo turns to his companions, "Well, let's try another way, then. Let's try the door on the upper level..."

The party then moves up to the door on the upper level, and Arturo pulls out his picks, and attempts to open it.
Arturo Disable Device: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21

He twiddles around for a while, and is able to open the door.

The party sets up their "resistance chain", and moves in.

A twenty-foot-tall statue of a man carrying a tome stands in a round niche at one end of this impressive chamber. The chest and head of the large statue have been badly damaged, and look like they melted and ran before congealing again, giving the statue a crude, blob-shaped face with eyes of red stone. A doorway leads to the southwest, and another to the southeast.

Liberty's Edge

Male Human (Varisian) Level 6, #-4

Arturo scans the room for traps, and cautions everyone to do the same - both here and along the corridor.

"I've always found something lucky about moving southwest," Arturo says, shakily putting his picks away, "Perhaps we could head that way? Seems as good a reason as any...."

"Sounds good to me Arturo, right after I take the red stone eyes out of this melted statue. Seems like these are likely the key to opening that door, we will need to look out for more stones. Hopefully we didn't miss any in our explorations so far..."

Taking Arturo's advice, Jaender scans for traps and other things out of the ordinary as he moves into the room. He also takes a moment to use his wand to cast Mage Armor on himself, and Einhardt the wolf. Assuming nothing is found or jumps out to fight us... Jaender scurries up the statue (carefully, taking 10 if possible) and uses a small blade to pry the red stones from the statue's eyes.

Jaender and Vox note something odd near the statues head... but it would be about a 15' climb to check it out. Jaender and Poochie also cast Detect Magic (something I consider rather "standard operating procedures) and notice a magical aura in about the same location. As they focus, they determine that it is a Transmutation effect, but they can barely detect it through the statue.

My climb check actually sucks... (-1 due to strength) so if it makes more sense, Jaender will keep a lookout while Vox climbs the statue.
