The group is at the Pathfinder Grand Lodge in Absalom.

Zarta Dralneen and Master of Scrolls Kreighton Shaine sit atop folding camp stools set before a carefully arranged pile of packed tents, furlined parkas, parasols, loose robes, flippers, and other gear flanked by a team of mules on one side and horses on the other. Kreighton Shaine rises to greet his guests, ignoring the eclectic assortment of equipment behind him.

“I appreciate your meeting with us here. We have lost many good Pathfinders in the wake of a recent attack by the Aspis Consortium, and we have struggled to fill the vacancies left by the fallen. In particular, I have focused on securing a Master of Spells.” He grimaces before adding, “Hopefully just an interim Master of Spells. The best candidate is one the Decemvirate assumed dead about ten years ago: Aram Zey’s predecessor, Sorrina Westyr.”

Zarta Dralneen shifts atop her stool for a moment before standing. “That’s not to say that the Decemvirate was callous in their decision to certify her death; investigators thought they had exhausted all available leads at the time. My archival team has since located several requisitions that Westyr wrote and approved for extremely rare ioun stones, all but one of which she returned to the Society’s vaults.” She holds up a small lead box. “This is significant because she was researching the nature of ioun stones and their interactions with a special wayfinder referred to as the wayfinder of many paths. The wayfinder can open a gateway to any number of locations, but each type of ioun stone serves as the key to just one very precise—often inconvenient—point.”

Kreighton Shaine finishes feeding a handful of oats to a mule as he adds, “Needless to say, few thought it worth testing further. However, Sorrina found the contraption intriguing and set to cataloguing as many of the destinations as possible. It may be that wherever this stone sent her proved lethal, yet it may also be that she is merely trapped, imprisoned, or otherwise waylaid. We want you to follow Master Westyr’s team and bring them back to Absalom if they’re alive—or whatever you can learn of their deaths if not.”

He takes the lead box from Zarta and places it atop an ornately carved wooden box. “Sepia ellipsoids are extremely uncommon, and this is one of a small few remaining in the Society’s possession; do not lose it. The other box holds the wayfinder of many paths, which I trust you will also keep safe. Perform whatever other preparations you must, and stop back here once you’re ready.”

Looks at the group of pathfinders gathered in front of him and adds. "Is there anything else you need to know?"

A gnome girl, who wears a pink bow on her thick, white hair, is darting around the room, looking at the pile of goods. She's wearing a dragonscale plate, which is for some reason colored pink.

"Why do you have so much stuff here? Hi Zarta, sorry about the last one, but we had to choose, and the one before went all fine? Saving people is always fun! She's been missing for ten years? But if there was something nasty there and we don't know how can we go now? What if it slaps us right away? How we get back? What are these parasols for?" Kiti grabs one parasol, and performs a little parasol-dance around a sleeping white tiger, who also has a pink bow on its head.

The gnome continues her flurry of questions, jumping between subjects without any pause: "I want to know what's there, but you don't know? I've never seen a pathfinder use a parasol. Who knows what's there? Does anybody? I'm Anne Catherine, at least Zarta knows me, but if you didn't that's me. Or Kiti, as all my friends say. Do we need parasols there?" She ends her dance and puts the parasol back, and jumps on the nearest table to sit.

Kreighton looks at Iso and Elain, nodding softly.

“That was one of the more curious developments. One week after she disappeared, the wayfinder reappeared in her study. I don’t believe that’s part of its intended functions. No other stones were tried. We don't know her whereabouts, we know she was accompanied by a fairly eclectic team. Braethin was a halfling disciple of Gorum who was remarkably even-tempered. Nissira was one of Master Westyr’s closest friends when they were initiates, often accompanying the latter on missions as a tracker. Setik of Averaka served as their interpreter and authority in spiritual matters, always holding himself to a higher standard to offset any prejudices against half-orcs. Finally, there was Grave Treader, a Shoanti scholar whose powers of observation and prolific submissions to the Pathfinder Chronicles were unmatched.”

Zarta adds while looking at the gnome with unkempt discomfort.

“We don’t know where she is. It could be another city, a distant country, or even another plane of existence. That no one has returned in 10 years does not bode well for it being an easily accessed or safe location, though. You should take that into consideration while you make your preparations for departure, for you will only be certain of the resources you carry with you.”

She drinks some brandy as if she was to forget gnomic behavioural problems.

“Actually, activating the wayfinder of many paths while it contains an ioun stone will take you to a specific destination. If you stand in that same destination and activate the wayfinder again at least 24 hours later, its gateway will instead take you back to where you started. If you lose the sepia ellipsoid, though, you will be trapped there unless you can secure an alternate way to return. Do be aware that the gateways never stay open for more than two minutes.”

Kiti sticks her head into her backpack, and soon pops out again, with something dried in her hand. "Here! It's been in my bag quite long," she says and bangs the hard piece of food on the table, "but it should be good still, or at least not too bad. If the scroll to get us back is too complex or expensive, maybe some way to communicate where we are or who we found might be almost as useful.

Male Once Human Rugby Prop Lvl 12 / Wargamer 3

Zarta looks at Elain and answers.

"Yes, he is. But if you had been listening, you would know the wayfinder cannot be activated accidentally. You need to put the stone in it and the give the command word."

She sighs.

"You may go and make your preparations."

You have a couple of hours to purchase items.

The group is back in the Grand Lodge. Zarta and Krieghton are waiting in the Grand Lodge's patio.

"Are you prepared then?"

The Master of Scrolls opens the wayfinder of many paths. Zarta opens the box with the Sepia Ioun stone and places it into the wayfinder.

"Matkustaa."

The portal opens into a shadowy cavern illuminated only by the ambient light of Absalom’s afternoon sun, but even this is enough to make the field of malachite stalactites sparkle. On the ground, clear quartz crystals splay into spiky bushes, low gypsum roses wrap around blue crystal archways, and great purple and green spires rise beyond view in a jungle of countless mineral marvels.

Shaine and Dralneen look at the cavern and share a knowing glance before the elf announces in a wry tone,

“Well, I suppose you won’t be needing the horses.”

He and Zarta quickly help you choose the best gear suitable for underground exploration, hand over the wayfinder of many paths with the sepia ellipsoid.

“Now, hurry, before the portal closes.”

As you cross, you feel a tingling sensation down you spine. Once on the other side, you take stock of your surroundings, study the area.

Dungeoneering 15+:
Many of the crystalline structures seem to have formed in previously unknown—possibly unnatural— ways; the processes necessary to form one type of crystal here are vastly different than those to create others in the same area. At least among Pathfinders, this regional attribute does not match the description of any wellknown cave system. A PC who succeeds at this check DC can also properly catalogue the formations here, helping the group retrace their steps, find where the portal had opened, and use the wayfinder of many paths to return the team to Absalom.

Dungeoneering 20+:
Although there seems to be a slight extraplanar signature, a closer investigation suggests that this cavern is not on the Plane of Earth. There are no planar traits that would modify magic cast here.

Dungeoneering 25+:
Dwarven legends speak of a cavern called the Crystal Womb, supposedly found in the deepest reaches of the Darklands: Orv. There one can find gems and precious metals of nearly any kind, though the legends also warn of guardians from the Plane of Earth who protect its wealth from any greedy trespassers. This is very likely that Vault, and there is no direct route from it to the surface; such a trip would take many weeks or even months.

Wembly notices an arcane marking in one of the crystalline formations. When he goes closer to inspect it, he realizes there is another mark on the other side of the same formation.

Looks like the crystal has grow in the last years, making the mark a bit harder to see, a little bit obscurer than the usual.

Knowledge Arcana 15:
These marks belong to Sorrina and Setik.

There is an identic mark 50 yards ahead, in another crystalline formation.

Iso noses around, pointing out interesting things as he spots them. He reaches out for an especially pretty rock as Elain speaks.

"So Iso no take pretty rock?"

He looks at the crystal that Wembly points out.

"Iso not think that crystals grow so fast."

"Ohh good spot those are marks made by Sorrina and Setik. Let's head between them and keep an eye out for more"

You find the same markings in the same spot where you landed. Iso goes forward and comes back saying he has found more of those markings ahead.

They might be some kind of 'bread crumbs'.

You follow the path marked by Sorrina and Setik for one hour, when you find a cairn next to one of those markings. The stones of the cairn are crystals. There's a wayfinder on the top of the cairn. It seems it has been there for quite a long time.

Well, if Sorrina and Setik left the trail, it seems either this is as far as they made it and died here. Or they wanted us to find this place. I am assuming the former but it is sad either way.

Wembly will look around for any more of the markings, and at the wayfinder atop the cairn (without touching it).

Is this the end of the line, Iso and Sutekh?

Does the wayfinder appear to be a "normal" version, or one like we used to get here?

"Iso sees Waytfinder!" says the large man proudly.

"Iso wonders though, if signs have been covered up over years, why has wayfinder not? And if Wayfinder is left here, does that mean nothing else lives here to take it?"

Iso scratches his behind, something is itching, and it bothers him.

"Does trail go on further?"

He thinks about reaching for the wayfinder but stops. "Do earth spirits stop Iso from taking back society wayfinder too?"

He can't help but continue to glance at the pretty rocks all around.

The name Braethin is written on one of the sides of the wayfinder.

There are more arcane markings 30 yards ahead, so, the trail does not end there...

Rocks are specially beautiful in this cavern, as Iso points out.

"That is neat! I can't mark stone with anything, it would be really fun. Maybe you could put these all around the grand lodge? Painted all magicky." Kiti admires the arcane marks as they travel.

When they reach the cairn, she stares at the wayfinder for a moment. "That is weird. They already left the marks, and that looks like another mark. Why would you leave it here? How are they finding their way without a finder? Or maybe nasties took it and made a trap?" She goes to look closer at the wayfinder, staring intensely with her nose almost touching it, trying to see anything unusual.

Iso starts to slowly reach out his hand to grab a shiny stone in a 'trying to be subtle and failing badly' kind of a way.

But the big lumbering guy is pretty obvious about it, if anyone wanted to slap his hand away you think he'd probably stop.

Iso grabs a stone from the cairn.

Nothing happens.
