Ludovico is obviously less than thrilled about this plan.

Very Well he says finally If this is to be the plan, may I please have my longsword shrunk? The rest of my gear will go into the chest. I'd like to make a quick purchase before we go, and also, Opal, may I have a charge of your wand?

With magically enhanced disguises in place (even the massive barbarian gains numerous little touches with the spell from Opal's wand) a Pathfinder agent leads you into the Coins district, where a nervous Kelishite slave trader named Mahjub Mahdi writes up the appropriate paperwork to identify you as slaves bound for Stonespine Island - seller to accompany the chattel. He then transports you to the impounded Okeno slave ship, which is already outfitted with a new crew loyal to Lady Darchana and additional cargo bound for southern coasts. The voyage south is fairly uneventful.

Sharks casually feed on cast-off corpses that float like buoys marking the channel into Yellow Harbor. This close to Okeno, the rocky mountain range that gives Stonespine Island its name is a blur against the sky, hidden by the city’s haze of smoke and dust. Each pier is crowded with yellow-sailed slave galleys, pirate clippers, and the occasional, heavily armed merchant ship. Past a row of taverns, the slave markets are smelly and crowded, packed with auction blocks and pens.

Your group is met by one of the harbormasters, and given directions to a specific pen in the Fleshfair. There a harbormaster consults a logbook and tells the disguised slavers that you're right on time, should expect the client to arrive for pickup later that day, and can place the merchandise in one of the pens until then. As if on cue, a pair of gnolls ambles toward the group and inquires about your shipment. The harbormaster grins, identifies the you as the cargo in question, and calls over several assistants to finalize the transaction.

The gnolls are amenable to escorting a few slavers in addition to the chattel they’re expected to purchase. They give a nod of approval and all of the slaves are bound at the wrist and linked through chained slave collars. With that, you're off...

Along the way you find yourselves placed with three other slaves who try to talk to you a bit. The gnolls growl at the conversation, but so far they only threaten a whipping. There is a pair of humans, one male and one female. The female looks very muscular. There is also a rather average looking halfling woman.

[ooc]Will update tomorrow, but feel free to do any role-playing in the meantime.

Stripped of all save his plain clothing and his tiny hidden saw, Guang seems to take it all with placid acceptance, the threats of the gnolls washing over him like water. It's possible he even dozes off a little in some of the transit moments.

But he gives a tiny, half-awake nod when Isabella speaks to the halfling, and looks to the human couple in turn.

"Well, this is the fine pickling we are in, yes? Hello," he says, his eyes creasing at the corners with a genuine smile. "How long have you been in this terrible state like ourselves?"

Guang, despite a good attempt at making small talk is met with growls and threats of the lash.

Ludovico, despite a far less smooth approach gets an answer, "I spent several years enslaved in my homeland and Katapesh." She has the features of a Kellid, so her laconic nature isn't surprising.

Keep in mind that those of you posing as slaves also have to be stripped down (slaves don't wear armor.) No need to update your profile for it, but just be aware of it.

The halfling woman sees that this group of slaves are stronger than normal. She starts making small talk, but there's something odd about the way she talks, "Looks like a bad harvest" she says looking up at the sky. "I failed to predict the weather, and now I'm here."

This certainly requires a response. :D

Jal looks back at Guang with a blank expression. ”Nope.”

He studies Guang’s features for a moment before continuing, ”Met a few from there, though.” His mouth spreads into a dark smile. ”Terrible gamblers, they were. And poor losers.” The smile melts, leaving just a hard look, ”Some people just don’t know when to cut their losses.”

The smile returns, ”Anyway, I was fairly certain he wasn’t going to use the blade anymore.”

_________

Jal is quiet and stone-faced as they make their way through the slave pens. More than once, he uses his kapenia to wipe his sweating brow, discretely checking to make sure his shrunken blade is still hidden within its folds. He gives the gnolls a hard look (making them his Studied Targets). He doesn’t engage any of the conversation from his “slave” teammates, but keeps his eyes and ears open.

At the brief exchange between the gnolls and Venzetti, Jal steps closer to them and gives them his darkest grin, folding his arms across his chest but turning so his morningstar—hanging from his belt—is facing them.

Jal:

Jal gives the halfling a sideways glance, then turns back to Venzetti and the gnolls.

”Good time to double-check the bindings,” he mutters. Then Jal turns around, very briefly finding himself facing Venzetti but with his back to the gnolls. In that moment, he catches V’s eyes and mouths, ’distract them’.

He moves among the ‘slaves’ with the cold indifference of practiced slavers, giving the bindings of each a thorough check, moving down the line, one at a time. When he gets to Isabella, and next to the halfling, he mutters a warning in a voice not meant to carry beyond the tiny slave.

”You’re a Bellflower.” he whispers, making brief eye contact with the halfling, ”We’re friends, but there’s more going on here. If you move now, you blow our cover. A cover we need to locate and take a slaver using slaves as spies. Play along and we may be able to get you out.”

Vanzetti: I literally lol'd at the reference to Guang as a courtier. His dance-of-the-seven-veils would be.... something, alright.

Before Guang can give answer to Jal's words about the Tiens that he has met, the situation exacerbates sharply: the whipping is issued-- Guang does his best to flinch as an appropriately cowering slave at each blow of leather to his flesh, instead of enduring it with the tranquility befitting one who is following Irori's model-- and then-- the halfling has slipped her bonds and escaped.

"Oh dear oh dear," Guang murmurs as there is abruptly much noise and consternation of all sorts.... and then, shortly after that, there is also fire.

Guang's brows arch up towards his bald pate. "Oh very dear."

It will, he thinks, be difficult to achieve entrance to the slave compound which is their destination if they have none of the known gnoll slavers with them. Still, Vanzetti has seemed a highly persuasive fellow thus far... perhaps it will still be feasible.

Basically just chiming in to establish I'm here; chained to the slave line, there's no action I see feasible for Guang right now. Will wait until we're (likely) in intiative.

Ludovico begins Inspire Courage as his standard action. Each party member that can hear him receives a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls.

I should add this is his plan when his turn rolls around. Sorry for jumping the gun.

Don't worry about jumping the gun. I try to apply turns as close to actual initiative as possible, but so long as it doesn't short sheet another character. :-)

Alas, Guang has yet to achieve ranks in Perform: Dance, and his natural skill at shakin' it means that he's gonna, uh, jiggle.

Guang stands for a moment wracking his brains. His saw is useful, but only when one has the time to persistently saw at bonds-- not when every second might matter. Instead, he tries to wrench free of the collar, twisting and tugging with his bound hands.

(I'm gonna assume I can't use Acrobatics to try and get out of the slave collar, alas. Escape Artist it is.)

Escape artist: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 Nope.

Just waiting on Opal to direct her spell, then baddies.

Guang curses his predicament, and fails to break out of his collar!

The gnolls are in shock at this, "WHAT THE HELLS IS GOING ON HERE? Slaves get back in line before we whip you raw!"

The other "You there! Don't let her escape!" he says to those of you not chained.

Sorry for the delay. I sleep at night. :p I put my spider swarm and me on the map.

I like using that one. I always end up with one spider left, extra protein for the day.

The swarm of spiders will start at Opal, and double move to one of the gnolls.
1d6 ⇒ 3 damage, plus disease and distraction Fort DC 11 for both.

Pesky chain!

Isabella struggles with the chain, she fails to escape this moment

MAP TEMPLATES | Social Combat | War for the Crown | Campaign Tracker |

Guang struggles with the chains as the spiders engulf the gnoll to the North.

Fort: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Fort: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

The gnoll's fur helps as he stays the course and shouts at the hyena to go after the halfling. He steps out of the swarm and barks at Opal before hurling a javelin her way: ATK: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 drilling her thigh for 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 DMG.

The gnoll to the south shouts at the slaves as a whole "Lay down or it's the lash! He makes an example out of Isabella by lashing her for 1d3 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 nonlethal damage.

The hyena takes off after the escaped halfling Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15 and chomps down on her leg 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 and tries to take her down. Trip: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16. The woman screams as she falls to the sand.

Ludovico begins a rousing performance, which seems badly needed at the moment.

The situation was already out of hand, and it was already going to take some seriously fancy con-work to maintain their cover. And frankly, the gnolls were asking for it.

gnoll slaver wrote:
”Lay down or it's the lash!”

”You first,” Jal replies as he dashes up to the gnoll, drawing his morningstar on the way. ”Time for a nap, mutt!” He punctuates the last statement by planting his morningstar in the gnoll’s face.

Move up to Black gnoll (AoO provoked from hyena is against an AC of 25 due to Mobility), drawing morningstar on the way. Then two-handed attack (includes: Studied Target +2, Inspire Courage +1, Power Attack)
Morningstar: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 8 + 1 + 2 - 2 = 23
damage: 1d8 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 1 + 2 + 6 = 18
