"We're gonna have plenty o' trouble before it gets 'ere!!" Dashing out of the circle of bright light, Graxzos takes cover by the edge of the stair and takes a pot shot at the nearest kobold.

In the darkness, his shot has no chance of hitting. Scowling, the dwarf reloads. "Let's see how the ugly likes this...HEY IF ANYONE'S GOTTA LIGHT NOW'D BE GOOD!"

Move to the square 2 up, 3 right (should be adjacent to the stairway wall) and miss the closest kobold. Then reload with a flare cartridge...let's see if they have light blindness!

"I'm going, I'm coming..." Hurrying after Sapper, Yndra opens her backpack and retrieves the orb once she's taken up position. Holding the thing in her hand, with her axe in the other, she holds the orb up to the dragon. "We're here to set things right the way they should be. These kobolds are not your master, and you are not their overlord. You were here when Dwarves ruled, and you will bow to the might of this orb!"

Move, then move to retrieve the orb.

Sapper calls out to Yndra.

Graxzos and Thaia shoot their firearms into the dim light but neither connects with their intended target.

The kobolds look on incredulously as Yndra holds aloft the egg shaped clay orb in her hand, showing the engraved stars and symbols towards the creature on its throne.

The golden winged creature flies 10' closer and looks down upon her, unimpressed.

You should not be here. I do not bow to you or any mortal, but just the keeper of the talisman.

SM-5 but it does not seem to recognize the orb at all

The kobolds assume defensive positions, readying attacks at the party as if waiting for their golden god to command them.

Yndra mutters some curses when she figures out what she's been doing wrong. She then deflects the frustration at her own forgetfulness on her companions. "What? You're just going to let me stand here with this thing, like a senile old lady?! Be glad I still have my wits about me..."

She grips her axe close to the blade and gives a few gently taps with it to the clay of the egg. "That should do it. Heh, it's just like Sunday morning..."

"Behold, I am the keeper of the talisman!"

Rebels Map

The golden creature sees Yndra grip her axe and it appears ready to swoop down from the heights and attack her.

As the axe blade hits the clay egg, it cracks open the talisman and reveals a piece of golden metal with an ancient symbol engraved on it.

Upon seeing it, the Golden Guardian immediately calms down and utters, “Welcome, friends of Ashkurhall.”

However, the kobolds, in anticipation of their god dismembering you interlopers, are instead enraged.

They assemble to shout at you from approximately 30 feet away. Their blind leader, Naktok, makes the following accusations in halting Common
“What is this? You put a curse on our Golden God with that trinket!”

Interspersed with other indignant claims, punctuated by the distressed chorus of his kobold followers.

“The idiot human who collapsed the corridor was a friend of yours, wasn’t he?”

The archers continue...

“You attacked kobolds a few weeks ago just outside these ruins, didn’t you?”

“You have been stealing our stuff!”

The blind kobold speaks again...

“How did you get past Stinkeye? Did you murder him?”

The kobolds still look ready to attack at any provocation. The winged creature seems completely passive at this point.

"The 'idiot' human isn't exactly a friend of ours, but we'll gladly take him off your hands, so that you're rid of him. We're not interested in stealing your 'stuff', and if there was a fight with the kobolds here a few weeks ago, they probably started it." Let's hope they'll forget about Stinkeye for a minute...

The kobolds seem to calm down at Graxzos support for Yndra and Sapper's bluff. With Wiem the kobolds calm down.

Unless the party wants to purchase some cure potions, Naktok goes to check on Stinkeye, and his sulking comrades go to check if the traps near the entrance are still functional.

The Golden Guardian is still suspicious as well.
You look nothing like the dwarves I knew millennia ago. I need you to get on top of the massive stone hammer to view the series of murals on the wall.

"Well yes," Yndra answers, trying to sound casual. "Of course we got the talisman legitimately." I hope he considers that, as well. "My assistants will join me, naturally. Chop, chop."

Yndra, still holding the metallic object, then makes her way to the wall with the murals. "So, how long have you been here with the kobolds? They worship you as a God, it seems. They're no threat to whatever you're guarding?"

Yndra addresses the Guardian. "Well, obviously it was a long time ago, and it's no wonder that some knowledge was lost. Still, the meaning of these murals are clear enough: It's the history of Ashkurhall and of you, its guardian." She points at the murals, one by one. "A long time ago, the Dwarves looked up to the sky. A great cataclysmic event, a piece of the sky falling down. There was great upheaval among the dwarves, and brother fought brother: our race of dwarvers against the outcast Duergar. Now, if I'm not mistaken, something was scattered to the wind. This object, one of them. Since we're deep in the jungle, South is fitting. This one isn't quite as clear (E), but I assume it's meant to show the region we're currently in. There's been gold mining, so that fits. The next one shows Ashkurhall, built by the Dwarves. The Dwarves were... worried (E), so they needed a Guardian. That's you. Marvellous creature... Finally, these last two, they show what happened next. The talisman was left with the Gripply, and this one (J) shows what happened to the Dwarves after that."

I wanted to make it into a nice story, but I'm making some guesses at certain parts. Hopefully the others can add some more detail or fill in the blanks.

"I think maybe this be th'origin of th'Taralu; how they split away from the rest o' dwarven folk, much like my own folk did. Guardian, if yeh be the totem of the Taralu...did yeh know tha' some i' them yet live? There be a whole clan in Kibwe, no' far from 'ere."

Grax will also, with Yndra's permission, take a reroll on Mural C.

The Golden Guardian nods approvingly.

“You truly are the worthy bearers of the talisman, so I shall tell you a story that Sigrin of Ashkurhall, the founder of this place, once told me.

“Long ago, when Sigrin’s father ruled as king, the dwarves rose from the depths and built a citadel so mighty that even a titan would gaze upon it in awe. Centuries later, a shower of stars rained upon a land not far from the dwarven hold. The dwarves marched to investigate. They found many wonderful things, the greatest of which was the mysterious artifact they named the Sky Key.

“But dark times soon followed, for their cousins from the underworld fell upon the dwarven citadel. Caught unprepared, the dwarves knew they could not hold off against the siege. The king ordered all but his most trusted guards to leave, and stayed behind to buy his people timed to escape. Before Sigrin and her three siblings left to lead the dwarves to safety, the king gave each of them a piece of the Sky Key, and kept one for himself. The dwarves traveled far and wide, but the dangerous journey across the unknown land caused rifts in their clan. One by one, the king’s children went their separate ways, each taking a piece of the key and a part of the clan. Sigrin’s dwarves made their way to this continent, and though they found it quite inhospitable, they pressed on. After much searching, they found gold and started building this place. Their prosperity grew with each passing decade.”

Grinning, the Guardian continues,

“That’s when I entered the picture. We didn’t get along at first, but I came to realize they were decent people, who appreciated stone and gold as much as I did.

“Their luck did not last, however. A sickness came over the dwarves, and the survivors were too few in number to continue their lineage. Rather than slowly die out here, they chose to leave. However, they wanted someone to watch over this place. They chose me. Sigrin went to her grippli allies and gave them her piece of the key. Where the dwarves were going, they couldn’t hold onto their memories and traditions. I think Sigrin made up a monstrous story about me—I probably deserved it,”

the Guardian says with a grin,

“but the story was to protect this place and the piece of the key.” The Guardian stares at the last mural for a long time.

“The dwarves left to join their cousins who lived in the jungle to the east. They never came back.”

Yndra listens intently to the Guardian's story. "That's fascinating. So this," she holds up the metallic object, "is a part of something called the Sky Key? What is it is Key for? And what happened to the others parts?"

A lot more questions come to Yndra. "What happened to you after the dwarves left? How did the kobolds get here, and why did you allow them to defile this complex as they did? Is this part of the Sky Key all that's left of these ancient dwarves' legacy? Or is there more, hidden away in thee complex?"

She then turns to Graxzos. "You really have to tell me more about these Taralu, when this is all over."

He eyes the talisman with new respect. "Part o' a 'Sky Key,' eh? Sounds like somethin' the Society'll have a passin' interest in. D'we have any idea where Sharrowsmith is?"

Thaia, the gargoyle initially seemed suspicious of your claims as rightful owners of the key, but now seems truthful.

The Golden Guardian nods and opens his mouth as if to reply to Yndra's questions...however right at that moment sounds of battle are heard along with scream from the southern halls.

The group of kobolds returns, screaming “More intruders! They attacked us! They are right behind us!!! Quickly now, we only have a few seconds.”

Assuming you prepare, the kobolds gleefully shout "Did you hear that? Another of our bolts and traps hurt the intruders!"

The elderly blind kobold laments If only Stinkeye were still alive he would have chomped on someone’s leg!

What a pity it is that “someone” stupidly destroyed our other defenses.

They fall back to the corner of the main hall, injured and out of ammunition. You hear shouts of humans and the clanging of swords and axes with an occasional snarl of some wild animals.

You have 1 round to prepare before the attackers enter the hall

"Friggin' typical," Graxzos growls. "Tha'll be th'Aspis." Hustling back down the ramp, he stomps down the stairs and takes up a position at the bottom, pushing his goggles down as he goes. Readying his pistol he squints at the doors.

"Some light'd be good! But I'll give 'em some when they show up..."

Double-move to the bottom of the stairs. When they show up, Grax will blast them with the loaded flare cartridge. Sadly it's not a readied action, as getting in range requires two moves.

I thought 'I should stabilize the poor critter, its only following it nature' but I don't have stabilize & was too worried about taking the blindfold off :).

"You never answered Sharrowsmith's location," she says to the blind kobold.

Yndra hustles to the stairs, then casts a Shield of Faith to protect her. She manages to look a little guilty at the kobold's loss of Stinkeye. "Yup. That'll be the Aspis already. Guardian, will you help us fight them?"

You hear more shouts and screams from kobolds as the intruders breach the defenses, but at a cost.

Then a trio of what appear to be mercenaries, garbed similar to Aspis you have see in the past weeks, burst into the room.

The first one dashes along the wall, but before any of you can react, the Golden Guardian charges as it swoops down and gores the hapless man into a bloody pulp.

Next a snarling hyena and two more men followed by a woman with a whip appear in the doorway.

She yells...

Take no prisoners! Kill them all!

Thaia takes her readied shot and fires at the hyena as it snarls and bounds into the room. The beast is severely wounded but does not stop its approach to your stairs.
