A gaunt, pale man wearing a black hooded cloak arrives, waiting for the Venture Captain to give the orders, as per usual. Around his neck, he proudly wears a holy symbol of Urgathoa. Strapped to his back is a wickedly-curved scythe, obviously his main weapon. Despite following the Pallid Princess, you see none of the fanatic insanity that normally plagues her clerics in Balon's eyes... in fact he looks almost kind.

"Greetings, fellow Pathfinders. I am Balon. May our journeys together be blessed by the gods... all of them." He bows deeply to the others.

A female Elf enters the lodge, you immediately notice the big bird that follows her docilely. She has a quiver strapped to her belt and a scabard with a elven curveblade on her back. In one hand she effortlessly caries a backpack.

Her comely face is marred by scar tissue, obviously the wounds that caused the scars did not heal that well.

"Well met Balon, I am Eolowyn and this is Soron"

A smallish gnome with wild hair stands in the back.

"Well hello everyone. I am Wembletonian Horatio Aurturillo Templeton. But my friends, you can call me Wembly. I hail from the Sanos forest. Although I did not quite fit in there and traveled here and became a Pathfinder. I have a cat that has followed me from Sanos. Although I do not think he is really from the forest but beyond the First World. I call him "Whiskers"."

My name is Hyrgan and I'll be partying with you during our adventure. I hope we will all become good friends and meet some new ones!" Apparently, he is a very happy-go-lucky little guy.

Sitting at the briefing table, listening to the conversations and introductions is a long-haired woman of Tien descent. She, after a moment or two of consternation, takes a deep breath before starting, "Hello... I am Hiko. It's a pleasure to meet you all. I look forward to working with you." With this she stands up and gives a quick bow, her wooden engraving of the Master's Rebus in hand.

Sorry for not posting sooner... I will be consistent from now on.

Male Human (Minnesotan) GM 5 Gallows of Madness |Midnight Marauder

The PCs begin the adventure in at the Grand Lodge of Absalom, where they join dozens of other Pathfinders on a lawn in the shadow of Skyreach. Many of the assembled agents hold fliers that appeared about the lodge the day before, hinting at a special announcement to be made here this morning. Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng emerges from the crowd followed by an assistant carrying a large stool that she sets on the grass. Dreng
spryly clambers up to stand on the stool and addresses the small crowd.

“Thank you for joining me here, Pathfinders,” the milky-eyed venture captain shouts. “Absalom has a long and illustrious history, and today we add a little more to that ongoing record. The esteemed councilor Hadrel Grayrain of Diobel recently passed away, leaving a vacancy on Absalom’s Grand Council. We’re still many months away from the annual inauguration of councilors, and with numerous acts pertaining to Diobel on the schedule, the vassal city is eager to get a new representative. In fact, with Absalom’s assistance, Diobel’s Kortos Consortium has co-bankrolled a festival spread across much of the Foreign Quarter. Ostensibly, this is an occasion to honor the deceased and welcome his replacement. Virtually everyone also sees this as a chance to advertise and earnsome new business.”

Drandle Dreng clears his throat and shrugs. “Well, the Society is no exception. We’ve already chipped in some gold to help this be a success, and in doing so we’ve received numerous invitations to the more exclusive events. With our recent work in Mendev, we’ve earned considerable goodwill.

“This is a good opportunity to consolidate those gains by seeing and being seen by the upper crust—as well as hobnobbing with the common people.”
He chuckles and gives the crowd a smile. “All at the Society’s expense! Have a good time, keep an ear out for interesting leads, and represent the Society well!”

The venture-captain then hops off the stool and mills about the crowd, greeting various agents by name, slapping associates on the back, and summarizing the planned events to anyone who inquires.

Events to take place

  • Grand Lodge Social (Afternoon, Day 1): As part of its contribution to the festivities, the Pathfinder Society will host an informal social gathering with drinks and appetizers to welcome visiting dignitaries and other people of note.
  • Commemorative Service (Evening, Day 1): At moonrise, a nondenominational commemorative service takes place in the Docks district.
  • Preinaugural Feast (Afternoon, Day 2): This event takes place at a great hall in the Wise Quarter from late afternoon through the evening.
  • Deliberation Day (Day 3): There are no major events this day.
  • Inauguration (Noon, Day 4): Slightly before noon, a will crowd gather in a large open-air amphitheater in the Wise Quarter.

You will have the opportunity to attend as many of these as you desire. You are currently at the Grand Lodge Social. You can see many dignitaries, such as your faction leads, but also many others. Please start by describing what you are doing, as a group, or individually. We'll be using the "rule of three" -- once three have posted you are doing something, you'll start that.

"I really want to join the commemorative Service tonight. They can say its nondenominational, but if it is under moonlight we all know Desna will watch. I do need to change my outfit though, I really should buy a dress for these occasions. Best pay my respects to Major Maldris now"

Eolowyn moves through the party (followed by Soron) and tries to get the attention of Major Maldris.

Balon is, at heart, a schmoozer, and this gathering of well-known Pathfinders is his natural habitat, as it were. He will attempt to learn more about the events while quietly promoting his deeds within the Society, working toward promotion if possible.

diplomacy(gather info): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

Wembly mingles in the party, trying to listen for stories of adventures or far off lands.

He otherwise enjoys the food and company.

"So much to do whiskers, and so little time. "

Afterwards he follows the more experienced Eolowyn towards their faction leader, Maldris.

Male Human (Minnesotan) GM 5 Gallows of Madness |Midnight Marauder

Eolowyn and Wembly make their way towards Colsin Maldris. He finishes his conversation with Alvalda Margruel, a statuesque woman in her late forties. He turns towards them, and says, "Good day, defenders of freedom. Unfortunately, I do not have time to talk right now. However, to make up for it, I would like to invite you to dinner at The Hero's Welcome. We can tip back a few in honor of Councilor Grayrain, and celebrate life and liberty.

"You will have to excuse me until that time. Good day" He tips his tricorn, and heads out of the plaza.

Completely unprepared for a large social gathering, Hiko completely freezes up, and spends the first half hour of the event sitting, with a slight smile on her face listening and barely breathing. She starts to interact a little with people after having calmed herself down, though she offers little to any of the conversations around her.

Diplomacy(Gather information): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5 She is sadly so internally focused she fails to remember much of what she heard.

A little later she rises and seeks out Venture-Captain Valsin, Dreng, and any other venture-captains at the event to ensure there is nothing she can do for them or the Lodge right now... and hopefully not have to "hob-nob" further.

Hiko searches the crowd for Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin in search of something to do to help. She quickly finds him, surrounded by several dignitaries and the like. Hiko, however, does not recognize any of the men or women that Valsin is speaking to.

The Venture Captain turns to the Tian woman, and says, "Ah, there you are, little Hiko. Why don't you find the team that Venture-Captain Drang has put you into, and then you can meet us in the hall, in the Grand Lodge. These fine folks would like the chance to meet some active Pathfinder agents, and hear what wondrous things they have been doing. Be quick about it!" Many of the people around him nod their heads, agreeing with him.

nothing to worry about here:

Finally having a more obtainable goal, Hiko searches out the rest of her group. She first finds the rebuffed Balon back at the meeting point and comments, "I don't know if it is useful, but Venture-Captain Valsin was wanting our group in the main hall of the Grand Lodge shortly... If you don't mind, that is..."

She then immediately locates Eolowyn from her large bird and hopefully finds the other two from her party and repeats her message...

Hiko rounds up the group, and they head for the entry hall to the Grand Lodge, where Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin (and his mustachio) is waiting for them, along with several people.

"Welcome Pathfinders! So glad you could make it," says the Venture Captain. "I believe some introductions are at hand... first, here to my right is Belladona Trask," he indicates a well-dressed halfling woman. "Miss Trask is a successful businesswoman from Diobel, and a contender for Grayrain's position. Next is Lady Darchana of House Madinani," he indicates a middle aged Taldan woman. "Lady Darchana is the Second Spell Lord of Absalom, as well as the Archdean of the Arcanamirium, and a member of the Low Council. Finally, but not least, we have Grand Ambassador Dremdhet Salhar," he indicates a heavyset middle-aged Garundi man with well-oiled hair. "He is the ambassador to the Ruby Prince in Absalom.

"Would you all please introduce yourselves, and describe a mission that you acquitted the needs of the Society while benefiting our fair city, or perhaps Galorian as a whole. Who will go first?"

I take it Eolowyn shops after the social?

Now how did a curtsy go? Dear Desna, why do they insist me on doing these kinds of things?

Eolowyn tries a curtsy that is probably not perfect according to the nobles standard.

"Pleased to meet you Milord and Ladies. My name is Eolowyn and this big bird is my companion Soron. As for my assignments: I just returned from the ruins of Xin-Bakrakhan before the Varisian coast where we destroyed an undead menace. Prior to that we explored an ancient pyramid in the magnificent Osirion desert."

She turns to Grand Ambassador Dremdhet Salhar "I must say it was a bit to hot for my liking, I prefer the shade of trees and not the blistering heat of the sun. Before these two missions I was involved in recovering an artifact for the Mendevian Crusade and I was here in Absalom when the Society had the trouble with Charvion during the Passion of the First Siege of Absalom, which you most likely have heard about."

Eolowyn curtsies again and takes a step backward.

The Ambassador asks, "An Osirion pyramid? How interesting? Where was it? What did you find there?"

Eolowyn seems flustered when Balon starts talking just when she was about to answer. After he has talked she gathers herself and replies, fist to the Ambassador:

"The pyramid is in the Parched Dunes, some ninety miles from Eto. It turned to be the last resting place of the Pharaoh of the Sphinxes, although he wasn't exactly resting when we were investigating. We found some beautiful ancient jewelry, an ancient boat and two chariots. We also made copies of the engravings."

To the Second Spell Lord she answers "Luckily we had high-ranking Pathfinders in Absalom at that day. My friends and me were mostly involved in fighting goblins."

Eolowyn pats the quiver at her side "I was glad I took my bow to the passion. Although it feels quite out of place to be armed at these occasions, you never know when evil will strike. I am sure my fellows also have very interesting stories to tell, I do not want to use all your available time with my rambling"

Belladonna Trask seems shocked at what Balon is saying. "Wait? Aren't undead evil? Isn't Urgathoa evil? What you are saying seems so... wrong!"

However, I did help in finding the Braid of a Hundred Masters in Tian-xia for the Ruby Phoenix Tournament, as well as help settle some unrest in the Realm of the Mammoth Lords... On the topic of undead, most of the very few I have encountered were acting on instinct or were created for an evil purpose. I have met an undead-human-demon construct who had been a Pathfinder once. She was never truly evil and has led me to believe that if something was once human and can retain some or most of their consciousness they are not necessarily evil."

At this point, a terrified Pathfinder enters the room in a panic. Valsin spots the man and signals to the PCs to handle the matter, including a Pathfinder hand sign that expresses “and keep it quiet.” Hoping to draw the visitors’ attention away from the PCs and the recent arrival, Valsin
announces that he has brought several relics recovered over the past year to show off, and the crowd excitedly gravitates in his direction.

The frightened agent is Kalkuin (a male tiefling), and he ushers the PCs into a side room before explaining the situation.

"There aren’t many agents around the Grand Lodge, so when I heard an explosion and ran to investigate, I was the first one there. It seems something bad happened in one of the laboratories—really bad. One of the researchers stumbled out all covered in boils and blood, and when I tried to lend him an arm, he bit me and tried to tear out my throat! It was all I could do to fend him off, and two others helped me drive him back into the lab and barricade the door."
He pulls back a tattered sleeve to reveal a bite wound that is festering as though days old, insisting, “This isn’t part of my heritage, no matter what you think. I think it’s some kind of infection, and I intend to find a cleric as soon as possible. In the meantime, we have agents in trouble at the lodge. Somebody’s gotta help them!”

Looking at the wounds, Balon determines that the (other) tiefling is not in immediate danger from the wound, but that it is a necromantic, flesh-eating disease. However, it is likely that the disease will kill him in the next couple of days, if left untreated. Balon cannot determine from what little information he has whether the infection is contagious or not.

The happy-go-lucky halfling turns serious and says "Yes, we must go there right away so that we can save whoever we can." With that, he turns and purposefully strides out of the room, moving as quick as his little legs can take him without looking like something is deadly wrong.

Is everyone ok with going there? I just gotta ask, to be sure, in case you wanted to do something before we are in the laboratories.

Eolowyn pats her quiver to assure herself it is still there and that is why I never go to these occasions unarmed

She follows Hyrgan out, Soron following at her heels. She turns around and tells the bird to stay when they are at a place where he won't be a nuisance.

Duty calls! And I am fine with that

Not able to garuntee her healing spells will not be needed later, Hiko just casts resistance on the poor tiefling. After her quiet chanting is finished, she heads to where the Venture-Captain and the dignitaries are and politely explains, "A small matter has come up and it looks like we will have to depart early... I am sorry we cannot finish our conversation right now but we will return as soon as possible." With this she bows and slowly backs away, before joining her comrades in going to the laboratory.
We can move on... I hope this doesn't piss Valsin off, but it is more polite than just leaving. Hiko is going to pick-up a wand of cure light wounds but not right before possibly mitigating a viral outbreak.

Male Human (Minnesotan) GM 5 Gallows of Madness |Midnight Marauder

When the PCs arrive at the entrance to the Society laboratory, a groundskeeper is on hand to give them a key to open the thick wooden
door reinforced with thick metal plates. The door opens to a hallway
with several preparation rooms used to concoct various items used in
alchemical research. Each such room’s door has a glass panel that allows one to look inside. Most of the rooms show signs of hasty vandalism, a few overturned tables, etc.

craft alchemy 15 or Perception 20:
The party find either a flask of acid, or an alchemists fire (roll 1d2... 1=acid, 2=fire). For every 5 you make the roll by, you find an additional random flask.

One check only. Designate a roller, and any aids must come before the roll.

A set of stairs at the end of the hall leads to a lower level. These are sticky with an unfamiliar substance.

DC 13 Knowledge (dungeoneering):
It is a slime trail like that left by a large slug or ooze.

Please verify the marching over at The Laboratory

Once the alchemy roll is done, we will move on, and the minis will be where they are.

I vote either Eolowyn or Hiko to make the Perception check since they are tied for the highest Perception checks. How many aids can there be? I have the third highest, beating the next highest by 4.

I am okay with either of us rolling for the perception check... would an aid from Hiko need a roll? Even on a 1 her bonus is enough to top ten.
On a different note, we don't have a good frontline, except maybe whiskers, do we? If not, Hiko can take the lead.

Well, Hyrgan has the second highest AC and was built as a jack-of-all-trades type character, so I guess he could take front instead of Hiko. He has a higher attack bonus by half however his damage is lower by half.

I do not mind if Eolowyn takes point, however that will reduce her damage output (I also noticed I got her AC wrong in status, this now includes buckler).

Aid others stack, so lets say Hiko searches and the rest of us aids (unless the GM rules otherwise of course)

Perception, Aid Hiko: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24

Eolowyn helps Hiko in searching the preparation rooms

"Well, Whiskers, this is an interesting development...for a party."

Unfortunately, Balon doesn't help any.

Balon is fine being in melee, so marching order seems fine... he will use his scythe against any monsters unless there are several of them, in which case he will likely use his negative channeling.

Grease effect:

A creature can walk within or through the area of grease at half normal speed with a DC 10 Acrobatics check. Failure means it can't move that round (and must then make a Reflex save or fall), while failure by 5 or more means it falls (see the Acrobatics skill for details). Creatures that do not move on their turn do not need to make this check and are not considered flat-footed.
