Kalendir |
I have brought some rope, but we will need a way to secure it
Kalendir riffles through his pack and uncoils the rope that he had neatly packed into his traveling pack.
Tristan Zanderholm |
Tristan begins checking the wall for any kind of secret portal that might allow access without the climb.
"I also have rope, but no means to secure it up top," he offers if his search doesn't reveal any easier means of continuing.
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Kalendir |
This is going to hurt if I fall lol
Maybe one f us should climb this with the rope and secure the rope at the top of the ledge for the rest of us. Kalendir suggests as he knocks some dust from the fringes of his tunic.
Tristan Zanderholm |
"I am not particularly skilled with climbing, but should be able to make it if someone can secure the rope. I will stand overwatch down here in case more of those cats come back." says Tristan starting to unbuckle and remove his armor in advance of the climb.
He forms a nice bundle and secures it with his rope, giving the slack end to whoever scales the cliffside first. Then they can lower down the rope and assist the other climbers.
He has his healing wand at the ready, longsword in his other hand in case someone falls.
Elen Kozan |
Well, I'm willing to give it a try. Don't know that I'll succeed, but at least if I'm up high while the others are climbing, I can shoot at anything that tries to attack us while I'm there.
Elen grabs at some handholds and begins trying to pull himself up the rockface.

I see Ragnar as a +5. Taking 10 for a 15 is enough.

As the hearty ulfen gets midway up the wall, a man-sized, crab-like monstrosity pokes its head out from a hole in the cliff face.

Tristan: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Monster: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
Tristan can act in the surprise round.
Tristan Zanderholm |
Tristan calls out to the others "Look out, foes on the cliffside!" pointing out the monstrosity to the any of the others. With no way to reach the crab-thing 20' off the ground, the Paladin sheathes his longsword, intending to use his bow in support of his climbing allies.
Just Move Action in the Surprise Round, so that's it.
Elen Kozan |
What the hell are crab-things doing this far above sea level?
Elen pulls out his pistol and fires a shot at the monstrosity.

Any knowledge to know what these things are, Nature? Tristan doesn't have that one anyway.

Kalendir pulls his Longbow from his side and notches an arrow as he takes careful aim at the crablike creature before firing so as not to hit his friends.

DM Feral |
Unless you have quick draw, you can't draw your bow and fire a shot in the surprise round. It doesn't matter too much because the 13 misses.
Elen's gunshot breaks like thunder across the icy mountain pass and the bullet slams into creature with a wet crunch. Tristan's arrow has less luck and clatters off the cliff face.
The creature chitters angrily and pulls its meal closer.
Pull vs CMD: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20

Elen mutters to himself while jamming a cartridge home into the barrel of his pistol,

Tristan Zanderholm |
With someone up top to secure the rope and his armor disassembled, Tristan tries to power his way hand over fist up the rope, using his feet to push off the rock face against.
Climb, unencumbered, knotted rope: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
DM Feral |
With Ragnar’s rope to climb, the party ascends and is able to continue their journey.
Roughly an hour and a half later, the terrain becomes better worked again. A narrow path leads up the mountain, hugging a sheer cliff face to one side, while dropping off to the other into what appears to be the remains of a rock slide. Several alcoves have been carved into the cliff face, each containing a small stone shrine—some little more than simple standing stones, others ornately carved lanterns or small houses. The path is well defined, promising easier progress, and is a welcome break from the rough terrain leading up to this point.
Kalendir |
Once at the top of the cliff Kalendir redraws his bow and has an arrow at the ready as he continues along the path paying zero attention to the lanterns and small houses.
Elen Kozan |
Know (local): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Best not to mess with things we don't know about.
Elen will follow the others, keeping clear of the odd little shrines and watching for more ambush monsters.
DM Feral |
Ignoring the shrines for now, the party advances along the narrow cliff path and turns the corner only to be surprised by an emaciated figure that reeks of rotting flesh. With a feral snarl it advances on Ragnar.

Kalendir moves in right behind Ragnar and lets and shoots an arrow right at the undead monstrosity.

DM Feral |
Before the creature can react, Ragnar delivers a crushing blow splitting the dead thing in half and splattering the cliff face with rotting flesh.
Going to assume Tristan delays since there’s no more visible enemies.
Movement can be heard behind the part as a similar creatures climbs up onto the path from the valley below.
I’ll assume Elen uses that ready now.
The aasimar quickly fires off a shot, tearing a hole in the creature’s pale flesh but doesn’t drop it.
The party is up.
Kalendir |
Kalendir grasps another arrow and fires it at the rotting undead creature that crawled up behind the party.
These creatures stink! he states as the waft of undead flesh wanes in the air

It’s too far and you can’t charge because A) You’re around a corner and B) There’s people in the way.
Ok, remove charge. Does that negate the cleaving awesomeness Mr. super-cool DM Feral sir?
Elen Kozan |
Elen reloads his pistol with bullet & powder, then moves out to the corner so he can see any enemies that try to approach from around it.
Tristan Zanderholm |
Sorry, I've been off the thread for a bit, catching up now.
Know Religion DC 15: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Tristan doesn't know what the little huts are, no where in the faith of Iomedae are there structures like this, so he discounts them.
As the undead creature attacks, he draws his longsword, but watches impressed as Ragnar cleaves it. When the second one approaches, cheers Ragnar on again, while trying to determine just what they are dealing with.
Know Religion/id foe: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
DM Feral |
Tristan recognizes these creatures as ghouls, ravenous undead with a love of flesh from sentient beings. Their attacks are suffused with necrotic energy that can render the living immobile and can inflict others with a disease that eventually turns a living creature into a ghoul itself.
The ghoul tears into Ragnar.
