This is the Gameplay Thread for
#5–06: You Have What You Hold

Here's the lineup:
1: Deevor/Natty Grastik, Half-Orc Rogue 5
2: Skorn/Vermin, Half-Orc Druid 6
3: Rut'hgar, Human Cleric 6
4: Ser Cadwgan, Human Cad 3/Rogue 2
5: Luca Tsitranoc, Bard 7 (human?)
6: Linarra Del Voix, Human lvl 6, Fighter/hellknight

Obviously, we're playing the high tier (lvl 6-7). Official start date is Saturday, April 5.

I intend to run a quick game and I want players to stay involved. Ideally, post at least once/day during the week, and even over the weekend if possible. If something comes up, be sure to tell me.

If we're in combat, or another situation where we're waiting for input from your character, after 24+ hours of silence I'll have your character do some obvious or conservative thing (either continue attacking as you have, or put your character in a full defensive posture). If you disappear for an extended period of time without letting me know, your character will disappear into an unexplained plot hole; unless you've completed nearly all of the scenario before this happens, you won't receive a chronicle sheet for the scenario.

I do have a busy travel schedule for work, but even so, I should be on daily. And when I'm not traveling, I'll be frequently monitoring the gameplay thread.

I'll be doing the initial post of actual game text in a few days, but feel free to introduce your character if you'd like.

Excelsior!

A dirty and snot ridden half-orc walks into the Lodge, his clothes seeming blackened by years of wear and almost blurring his features into the background of shadows, cast by the magnificent gandfather clock standing by the door. Getting close to him, you can smell a creature for which cleanliness is not next to Godliness, unless it be Urgathoa. A mace hangs at his side, which at least has had any gore and blood cleaned from it, which may be more than that of Natty himself. He smiles and looks around, you can almost see him weighing up the contents of the room, his practiced eye giving each a value.

He dips his finger into bowl of humus on the table, scooping a little out muttering, "Let's hope that the cook is at least as good as me!" He licks the end of his finger, smiles and nods.

Seeing no-one around, he considers his options, but decides not to remove the valuable tome resting on a chair, "Best not just in case its the Captain's spell book or something important.." he mutters to himself.

He waits quietly, melding into the background of the shadows as he waits for others to enter.

Loitering outside is a green skinned half orc wearing a strange make of lamellar horn armor. He leans upon a spear while a club swings at his side and a great axe is strapped to his back. A dog sized lizard rubs affectionately at his leg wanting attention. He is broad of shoulder and weathered. Somehow he seems at home outside. He watches.

A slim, dark-haired human wearing priest's robes strides nonchalantly into the lodge, looking around with eager curiosity. Over his robes he wears a silvery chain shirt, and and a dagger hangs from his belt.
His curiosity is quickly gone, replaced by a sly smile and a mischievous glint in his eye as he says "Now this looks promising!"

A lean man with dark hair enters the lodge. He wears a blackened chain shirt over boiled leather under his simple travelers' clothes. As he surveys the room, he slowly sets his shield against the arm of a comfortable-looking couch. An old coat of arms, though battered and marred by combat, displays a striking black serpent on a field of red and the Taldan lion on a chief of blue and green. He sets his bow and pack next the shield, adjusts the scabbard of his longsword, and sits down putting his boots on the nearby table. As the heels clunk onto the wood, a clump of mud falls onto the once clean table. Ignoring the mess, he leans his head back, closes his eyes, and grins to himself.

The six of you have been sent to the city of Tymon (anyone who wants to do shopping in Absolom beforehand, just post a list--or message me if you want it to be private). Tymon is on the very western borders of the River Kingdoms, next to the kingdom of Razmiran. It is renowned for its gladiators, as Tymon boasts both a huge arena and many prestigious gladiator colleges.

For a city founded upon bloody combat traditions, Tymon is surprisingly docile. Weapons are invariably peace-bonded, there is a lack of muscle-flexing machismo in the streets—even public disputes are scarcer than in comparably large settlements. Rule of law here is strong, perhaps, or else violent urges are simply sated vicariously through the famed Arena of Aroden.

Whatever the cause, little impedes the swift journey to Smine’s Weaponworks, locally famous as a place of business but secretly also a Pathfinder lodge. The sound of ringing steel and the withering heat of the forge through an open sliding door identify the stone structure as readily as its wellpainted but soot-stained sign. Several apprentices work blades in various stages of completion, and at the largest work area toils a smiling dwarf: famed weaponsmith and venture-captain Holgarin Smine. He glances up under singed eyebrows, never missing a beat as he says, “Ah. It’s you. A moment.”

After putting some final touches on a spearhead, quenching it in water, and nodding approvingly after a brief appraisal, he unties his apron and opens the door into the adjoining building.

Within a few minutes, Smine has set out refreshments such as bread and cheese in a much cooler kitchen. “Forgive me for not asking about your journey. Love the details, but those can wait. Someone’s picking a fight—with us,” he divulges in broken sentences reminiscent of the staccato clanging of the adjacent forge.

“You might know we’re committed to supporting Mendev. Important business, that. Worldwound expanding, wardstones failing. Not good for anyone. So when we send supplies north and they’re stolen, it gets our attention. And that’s been happening. Months now. Boat after boat heading up the Sellen, attacked, looted—always a few days out of Tymon. Now, River Kingdoms shipping isn’t always chancy; brigands on the water are nothing new. Not like this, though. And it isn’t all shipping. Just ours. Someone is targeting us.

“It’s my job to get to the bottom of this, and I have a notion how. Been told you lot were just what I needed. So here’s what’s going to happen. We’re not just going to find these pirates; we’re going to flush ’em out. They want to hit Pathfinders? Pathfinders can hit, too. They’ll think they’ve got another soft supply boat, but the cargo will be you. Ready to fight.”

He grins before concluding, “You’re bait. But you’re bait that bites back.”

I'm about to head out of the country (no worries, not fleeing the authorities...it's biz). I should be online again by tomorrow late afternoon/early evening--it's why I originally stated an April 6 start date. If you have any questions, etc, feel free to keep adding to the growing list of posts--I'll answer them in order when I'm back online and then we can really get this adventure underway.

"Bait, well that's a new one on me!" says Natty with some disapproval in his voice. "Can't say I like it much, but if I have to go as bait on the water, best I go to the market. There are things to find. Something to help stay alive in water would be most useful and anything to stop them river mozzies from eating my nice sweet flesh. Got time before we go?" he smiles.

"So do you know where you loose the cargo, how many days out from the start of the journey?" asks Natty. "And having not been on the river much myself, what dangers do we face on the rivers other than these pirates?" continues Natty scratching his black and greasy hair.

"Have the pirates left any survivors of value?" Cad places his hand upon his chin and pauses briefly. "If so, I'd like to ask about how the attacks happen...a chain across the river, maybe overtaken by another craft, and so on. A description of the pirates, or at least their captain and any banner they fly, might be helpful, too." He cracks a thin smile and continues. "I've dealt with tax collectors on the other rivers before. Can't be that different."

The Exchange

Male Human Bard 12

Luca nods approvingly at the others and turns to Holgarin. "Natty and Ser Cadwgan both make excellent points, but I do have a feeling that the pirates are a bit to knowledgeable about the society's comings and goings" He gives the nearest apprentice a suspicious look and continues, "Perhaps they have planted a spy... If so, we might be able to... convince him to cooperate with us"

Smine nods approvingly. ”I’m glad you have questions, and already are planning ahead. What I mean by ‘bait,’ Natty, is that you’ll pose as the crew on a Pathfinder barge. They try and rob you. You take ‘em down, hunt down their hideout and deal with any others.”

Smine scratches his beard (and a few other choice spots) before continuing. “If I knew where the attacks were happening, we’d go straight there. But there’ve been no survivors, no way of knowing when and where. So I’ll hire a boat and let you know which one. You’ll have a pilot to sail it, but you’ll have to handle all the fighting.”

Smine pauses for a moment to let the ringing of the forge to clear out of his head. “I’ve already put out the word that there’s a major shipment headed upriver soon. Should get their attention. You could help with that too…make yourselves look soft. Hit the taverns. Look like landlubbers—shouldn’t be too tough, since you look like you are landlubbers. Couldn’t hurt to do a little drinking, make it seem like you’ll be shipping out hungover. Spread some kind of cover story. Make ‘em overconfident.”

In his staccato delivery, Smine goes on to explain you can spend the night in his guest rooms, and let’s you know where the docks are located, along with the local watering holes and shops. He tells you he’ll have a boat for you by morning (it’s mid-afternoon now).

You have time to do shopping, and whatever you want to do to make yourselves conspicuous. There’s no town map, but it shouldn’t matter. There hasn’t been trouble in Tymon--and indeed, nobody brazenly carries weapons in the town limits. The probems been somewhere on the river well outside the city. So just let me know what you have in mind--it shouldn't require a specific map, v general location, what skills/ideas you want to try and I'll let you know what to roll, if applicable.

Your Knowledge (Local) checks ferret out the following tidbits about Tymon:
10+ Tymon is founded on a tradition gladiatorial combat, most famously in the city’s Arena of Aroden, where gladiators have vied for popular acclaim for over 2,000 years.

15+ Tymon’s ruling class is composed entirely of experienced gladiators who earned their status after winning 10 arena combats. Called “bloodied,” these gladiators have rights and privileges beyond any common Tymons. They alone are allowed to own property or bear weapons, and their word carries greater weight in court, almost placing them above the law. Tymon’s ruler, called the Champion, earns his place through combat as well.

20+ In spite of the privileges of the “bloodied,” specialized laws grant some equity to others. The Law of Grievance allows anyone to challenge someone who has wronged him to arena combat. This carries across social ranks; if challenged by a commoner, even one of the “bloodied” must submit. Even the Champion’s position is not secure; through the Law of Succession, any “bloodied” can challenge him for leadership.

Your diplomatic efforts to gather information also managed to confirm what you learned about Tymon and its gladatorial traditions.

Unfortunately, no matter how skilled and subtle your efforts, nobody knows much about piracy, other than it is a general danger on the river.

You also learn that there are two Dockside taverns frequented by riverboat crews. Pilots and officers tend to frequent The Flooded Sands, while more common crew favor The Rusty Anchor.

and to back up slightly, in response to Cad's comment about mercy

Smine smiles ruefully. "I certainly don't care what you do to the vermin you encounter." He pauses to look at the Half-orc Druid. "No offense."

"Anyone you capture and bring back will probably be sent into the arena...naked. But remember, we are trying to ferret out the whole operation, not just the raiding crew."

FYI: I'm giving Ruth'gar a bit more time to show up on the gameplay thread. If he doesn't post by tomorrow (Tuesday, 4/8) he's out, and I'll do a quick recruit post, though in truth, you five should be up to the task if necessary. Until you hop on your river boat, there's time for someone to join in seamlessly.

You are not traveling about Tymon openly carrying your weapons. When you arrived in Tymon via boat, Smine's assistant met you at the docks and brought along several large crates into which you placed your weapons and you carried them inside the crates all the way to the smithy.

Smine will hang onto weapons for you at the smithy, and he guarantees their safety, and will make certain they are securely stowed on your riverboat, available for your use as soon as you pull away from the dock. The smithy seems very well made and secure, with iron doors that bar, and Smine assures you his shop's never been robbed. (not to metagame too much, and far be it from me to try and ease any player's paranoia, but PbP doesn't allow for subtle clues when communicating, so let me add a fervent Never-ever been robbed. Really. You don't have to worry about anything you leave there.)

If anyone feels the need to try and conceal a weapon when going out on the town, please let me what and how you're concealing, and if it's mundane methods, make a Sleight of Hand check for me.

Luca hands in his dagger and the five or so other weapons from his handy haversack, and adds Linarra's wand to the collection.

Natty will keep a sap hidden in his clothing, its not a real weapon after all, but keeping it hidden is better than showing it to people who might not appreciate it. He hands his other weapons to Smine's assistant to take to the boat.

Sleight of Hand if he can take a 10 he will, otherwise 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14

"Yes this shopping for kitchen ware is quite tiring, a little refreshment wouldn't go amiss..."
