"Oh," Saki murmurs to herself with some surprise upon being told of the history of Sauerton, "I always thought that line went 'down from a sour tonne'... silly me, I always wondered why it never made much sense!"

During the boat trip, Saki will pray for honeyed tongue in her open slot.

----------

Saki nods politely to the captain, introducing herself as a Pathfinder and Shelynite paladin to him as they walk through the town. She enjoys the brief tour of the local area, plying the halfling with various questions about architectural styles of old Andoran and the history of any statues and fountains they pass by. When they arrive, she admires the mansion's opulence for a few moments before turning back to their guide.

"Thank you kindly for the escort, Captain," she smiles at Demrick, "I hope we can sort this business out quick-smart! Have a nice day - let's hope this weather clears up soon." Saki then heads on up to the mansion itself and lightly raps on the door.

"I've been thinking, there is likely to be more tension of kings versus people. Let us set this aside. I seek to make sure that all goodkind are protected from the onslaught of demonic death. Let us put aside the tactical for the strategic. If help comes from The People or Noble alike. We must take it."

He allows the sheriff and the Andorens to chat, waiting for a natural pause in the conversation to interject, "Thank you for your hospitality Sheriff," he flashes his holy symbol of Iomedae, "Tell me, has there been any recent news from the Fifth Crusade? I've been away for a few months now, since the First Knight sent me back south to rally more support for the defenders of the Wardstones, and I get so little news in my travels".

"We have had precious little news ourselves, all the way out here. And we've had some troubles of our own... wolves and such from the Forest. Two new packs have moved into this area and have caused some trouble for the locals." Demrick glances at the door of the manor before continuing. "I've asked for more men in the city guard, but so far... well, that is my burden, not yours."

The door opens shortly after Saki's light rapping. A thin, hook-nosed woman with graying brown hair held in a tight bun, likely the house-keeper, greets you. "Good morning. May I help you?" Seeing the Captain, she nods in greeting.

Saki offers the housekeeper a warm smile and a polite nod. "Good morning, ma'am! My name is Saki Kanazawa, and my companions and I are here from the Pathfinders." She gestures back at the rest of the motley crew hanging back chatting with the Captain. "Consul Andares should be expecting us, I believe. May we come in?"

Kingmaker Tactical | Strategic | The Marchlands | Campaign Tracking

Ober:
Demrick replies that it is Andares' decision, not his own. You don't sense much beyond what his words tell you, but Demrick seems a little frustrated.

"I see. Thank you for your visit, but I'm afraid that Consul Andares is not to be disturbed--" the housekeeper begins to say, but Demrick intervenes on your behalf.

"Come now, Dorabeth! These valiant Pathfinders have come a great way, and we could certainly use their help in finding Thalia. Surely they can wait in the parlor for the master of the house to finish his present business!"

Dorabeth relents and ushers you inside. The manor is tall and imposing inside and out, and you are seated in an elegant and well-furnished parlor. Dorabeth brings in a tray of refreshments and plies you with danishes as well as her own theories on the kidnapping. "It was Kyonin elves, I tell you!" she says to nobody in particular. "Our poor Thalia will be a sacrifice to their twisted forest gods... pity, pity."

You have a few minutes to chat with Demrick and Dorabeth, if you so choose.

DC 15 Kn Engineering:

Saki arches a brow at Dorabeth's... 'theory', immediately discarding it as complete nonsense. Why would the elves of Kyonin--a goodly people, by all accounts--kidnap the daughter of a vintner and mayor of Andoran? And 'twisted forest gods'? That was the first she'd heard of that kind of description of the Elven pantheon...

"Ma'am," she smiles at Dorabeth while taking a small nibble of one of the danishes, "why would you accuse the elves so? Have there been tensions between the Andares' and Kyonin?"

Skybek gladly partakes of the refreshments, reaching across for the biggest danish on the plate. Crumbs fly as he chomps away, getting both his fingers and his beard sticky. Despite his mouth being mostly full, the dwarf does mange to come up with a few questions for Dorabeth.

"Ahh'm curious how they got the wee lass. Did they sneak intae this hoose and abduct her? How long noo has she been missin?"

He then eagerly looks to see if there is a second pastry to follow the first.

In response to Saki's question, the housekeeper's face becomes flustered. "Well, no, but I found a leaf on the doorstep yesterday! And I've never trusted those elves anyway, so secretive in their little forest kingdom... but maybe it wasn't elves, maybe it was some Chelish spy! Yes, a Hell Knight! I'm sure it was a Hell Knight!" She beams at you, thrilled with her new theory.

Fortunately, Skybek had just finished his (first) danish and chimes in. "Well, we were all in the town square for the Silverglazer Sunday celebration -- me, the master of the house, the servants, the town guards, everyone except Thalia. And when we came back, she was gone!" Her face becomes visibly pained as she continues. "And there's been no ransom note yet! I'm just so worried... I haven't even been able to go into her room upstairs to clean..."

Demrick puts a hand on her shoulder and offers a few more details in a low voice. "The front door was found broken open, and very few things out of place to indicate a struggle. We've been pretty stumped, to be honest. Which is why I'm so glad you're here! Perhaps you can help the Consul find his daughter. And our dear mayor is a great friend to all who help him." He beams.

"He is so very concerned about his daughter! He hasn't been sleeping well, between the stress of this and the upcoming election..."

Demrick chimes in again. "Well, at least the election will be easy now! Our friend Andares has had a surge in popularity," he says to you. "Some townsfolk have been critical of him these last months, for not addressing these new wolf attacks, a concern I share, but... to use that against a man whose daughter is missing?" Demrick appears thoughtful for a moment. "It's funny. Any time things seem to go badly for an Andares, there always seems to a silver lining or convenient turn of events... hopefully for Thalia too!"

Ober:
Neither of them seem to have any real idea who took Thalia or why, but both are genuinely concerned for her and interested in her rescue.

Ober puts a reassuring hand on Demrick's shoulder; "Your concern for the young woman is admirable, Mssr. Demrick, and we will do our utmost to ensure the young woman is found and returned unharmed. You say there was no sign of a struggle, but that the front door was busted open. Is it possible, that the young woman might have a secret lover, one she might have eloped with? The broken door might have been a ruse by foolish youths to hide their rendezvous to throw an angry father off their tracks? And you said the election was happening soon, what of the individual running against Andares? Perhaps a plot by a desperate individual to win an election by distracting his opponent? I don't wish to cast suspicions on anyone, of course, but I want to make sure we're covering all our bases."

Kingmaker Tactical | Strategic | The Marchlands | Campaign Tracking

"I really don't know," says the Captain. "The mayor has forbidden me and the town guard from doing much investigating so far, at least until a note of intent arrives. I haven't even been able to look around the house, besides the front door. He doesn't want to jeopardize his daughter's safety. But perhaps you can convince him!"

With that, the door to the adjoining drawing room opens and two men step through. One of the men, a tall Taldan man who has aged gracefully with curly graying hair, concludes to the other: "I thank you again for your concern, cousin Sander, but the services of the Eagle Knights are not called for here. Surely you would not risk Thalia's safety in such a bold manner." The speaker pauses slightly upon noticing new guests sitting in his parlor, suppressing a hint of exasperation before asking you to introduce yourselves. "Good morning, Captain Demrick. Ahh respect Saki's view that she daesnae wantae break the law, but Ahh dannae gie a damn aboot that! We need tae find oot what happened tae the poor lass and we dannae hae much time te lose!"

Skybek removes his breastplate and shield and leaves them with Fragg.

"Noo, dannae try tae wear this! It was made tae fit a dwarf and nae some monstrous human such as yerself! But dannae leave it behind either. Ahh expect tae be able tae put it back on once Ahh return tae the company."

Once Skybek removes his breastplate with the help of his friends, he is ready to proceed. "All richt! Ahh'm all set. Mithradaties, will yae join me and help me tae find some clues?"

"Dorabeth, lead us up tae Thalia's room, if yae please!"

Stealth (Mith): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Stealth (Skybek): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Dorabeth leads you quickly and (not very) quietly up the stairs to Thalia's room, insisting that you be quick! quick! quick! before the master of the house becomes suspicious.

While the rest of the party makes noisy conversation below, you step into an elegant bedroom with a grand four-poster and rich curtains. Nevertheless, the room seems oddly spartan compared to the rest of the building. You have time for one, fleeting inspection before Dorabeth worriedly hurries you back downstairs:

Perception (Mith): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Perception (Skybek): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Your search is fruitless, and you are just about to heed Dorabeth's urgent call and head out the door... when Mithradaties catches something out of the corner of his eye. He retrieves a stack of notes just barely peeking out of a secret compartment under the cushion of Thalia's desk chair.

The three of you rejoin the party downstairs. Demrick is just answering Saki: "No, you have not! Please do tell -- but let's wait until we are outside. Thank you Dorabeth, for your help and hospitality! Shall we step outside?"

The notes will take a minute or three to read through, let me know if you want to do that while still inside.

"Aye, mae friend, let's tak the notes and escape. Ahh think we've already worn oot oor welcome."

Once outside, Skybek greets his companions.

"Aye, yae can thank Mithradaties fer the last minute find. We were almost at a loss!"

"Frag, me friend. Ahh hope yae've been takin care o' mae armor. Yae didnae try tae wear it did yae?"

Skybek then looks through the notes to see if there is any useful information.

Noted, thanks. Won't make much difference though. ;)

As you all file out the door, Dorabeth wishes you well in a hoarse whisper. "Good luck, Pathfinders!"

At a safe distance, Captain Demrick turns to address you once more. "So!" he says cheerfully, "tell me what your wizard saw and perhaps I can identify the place."

Skybek (or anyone else who reads the notes):

You take a few minutes to parse through the notes, written in a clean flowing script (by Thalia, you suspect). The notes draw connections between a variety of elections and other events since the People's Revolt, indicating that perhaps the Andares family (including Tercio) may have conspired with other powerful political families to form new dynasties within the ostensibly democratically elected seats of government around north and central Andoran.

Saki thanks Dorabeth once more for the hospitality before following Demrick outside. She vaguely notes the papers Mithradities and Skybek recovered, but decides to let the others deal with them for now.

"If I recall correctly," Saki begins, thoughtfully stroking her chin as she thinks about Telfyrn had told them, "our wizard said that Thalia was being held in an old-style building whose design was popular in Andoran before the People's Revolt: high ceilings and elegant adornments, that sort of thing. It seems to have sustained extensive fire damage that has not been repaired. Seems like that should really narrow down our options, don't you think?"

When Skybek summarises what the notes are about, Saki's expression darkens. Unbidden memories of the rather sour experiences she had at the marriage of the Blakros daughter spring to mind, and she yet again grows bitter at how politics would corrupt otherwise pure love and family life. "An unsurprising revelation, in some senses," she sighs. "Though I hate to admit it, that may explain why Tercio Andares is so hesitant to investigate the issue."

"I see three possibilities here."

"Perhaps the kidnappers found out about Thalia's investigations and are threatening to let the secret out should Tercio not succumb to their demands. In this case, the kidnappers are a third party wanting monetary rewards--or perhaps wanting an opportunity to join this 'dynasty' for themselves."

"Secondly... perhaps the kidnappers are of one of the corrupt families, who found out about Thalia's investigations. They threaten Thalia and Tercio should the secret come out, which would incriminate all of them."

"Lastly..." Saki hesitates before continuing, "perhaps this is something set up by Tercio himself. If he learned of Thalia's investigations, and feared that, if the secret came out, his own seat of power would be affected... and so, perhaps he..." She trails off, not daring to continue the rather slanderous train of thought.

Demrick doesn't even need time to ponder. "Why yes, it does narrow it down! There is only one place around here that would fit that description -- the old Sauer manor! Before fleeing to Cheliax, the Sauer family set fire to their villa and fields, sowing the land with salt and leaving it totally barren. We locals consider the place haunted. That makes perfect sense! And to think that poor Thalia must be forced to sit in that vile house." He gives you precise directions on how to get there.

"Now, please hurry!" Demrick's fleeting nervous expression flashes again. "I can't have the mayor finding out that I've helped you with your investigations, and we can't have any conspirators finding out and raising the alarm. I will be waiting at the town guard headquarters if you need me -- hurry to the abandoned villa!"

Demrick heads off at this point unless there are other questions for him. Let me know when the party is ready to move on the burned manor!

Ober reads over the letters with a smug look.

"Care to have a look Mithradaties," His tone almost mocking. He steps over to the Dwarf and aids him in putting on his armor."Let's not be too hasty about rushing into battle. We have powerful documents in our hands, documents that may allow us to be more diplomatic in our dealings with the kidnappers. Of course, conspirators must eventually be brought to justice as neither I nor our fair Paladin could turn a blind eye to law breaking, even a law I don't necessarily has any worth."

He then motions for the dwarf to lead the way.

"Let's all keep in mind that our primary mission here is to gain military support. If it was Consul Andares who orchestrated the kidnapping, are we afraid of upsetting him? There is another consul in town, of course - but would he respond well to our revealing a plot? What if he, too, is involved?"

Trifle looks around at the others. "Obviously, the girl must be rescued - personally, I care far more for that end than for the political games. I just want to ensure that we go about this carefully and fulfill our duties to the Pathfinder Society. Let's discuss while we walk."

You head for the outskirts of town, following Demrick's instructions, and witness a sudden change in scenery just as the rain stops.

The barren stretch of land before you is a sharp contrast to the surrounding fields of well-tended grapevines. At the center of the waste at the end of an ill-kept path sits a large stone villa in the old Chelish style, partially collapsed as the result of fires long-since extinguished. Rotted timbers and soot flank scorched bone-white walls, and collapsed piles of blackened wood are all that remain of the north and south wings adjoining the main hall. Rain-slicked bare earth, devoid of any vegetation, extends approximately 100 yards away from the house in all directions.

The party stands on the precipice of a wasteland, and the ruined manor before you appears dark against the cloudy sky.

Saki nods to both Ober and Trifle, agreeing with both their words. "Let us focus now on the safe rescue of Thalia, and thereafter on what to do with the perpetrators of the crime. And the matter of this corruption... well, one thing at a time."

She patiently awaits Frag's scanning of the area, frowning up at the dark and foreboding manor. "No wonder the townsfolk think it haunted," Saki murmurs quietly. She takes up her glaive, wary for potential danger.
