Frag is a tall Ulfen man, standing nearly six and one-half feet in height. He is mightily shouldered and broad of chest - striking an imposing figure. His tightly corded muscles evoke images of heavy dwarvish rope, barely contained under the light armor that he wears. At nearly 20 stone, he is a mountain of a man. His iron-like visage centers around his deep gimlet-eyes. Lapis in color, and sullen in countenance, they speak of an inner fury held in check solely as a fighter's tactic. To look at the man is to look into his eyes, which constantly measure the worth of all he sees. His skin is bronze, not from the proud Northern blood in his veins, but from years of living in a harsh, wild environment. Frag's hair is square cut, shoulder length, and black as jet. Rare among his people, the black hair likely comes from a stubborn Kellid ancestor.

Despite the feral nature of his physical form, he holds himself relaxed. His confidence and volcanic personality speak for themselves, no need to needlessly waste his energy giving effort to his intimidating nature. He wears the massive greatsword across his back like a noble carries his purse. While his armor is simple in design it mimics the man, minimal in form, efficient in function. He is a man who chooses his word carefully, speaking with purpose and a forthrightness that makes a courtesan nervous.

This is the barbarian of the frigid north who has forsaken his tribe in order to take control of his own weird. This is the warrior of uncanny potential who seeks immortality in the bard's song. This is the adventurer who seeks wealth in the long blade of his weapon. This is Frag son of Hjörlþegn.

A tall youth, with long black hair and a clean, cleft chin approaches. His armor is meticulously cleaned and draped with a blue tunic, emblazoned with the holy symbol of Iomedae stitched in gold. On his waist is a thick belt with a pouch of spell components attached and a finely crafted longsword. Closer examination reveals a polished wayfinder.

A smile comes easily to his face as he acknowledges the others with a nod. His strength evident in the powerful grip of the hand he offers strangers.

For some Pathfinders, the lad's face is eerily familiar. That familiarity is likely due to his elder brother being renowned Venture Captain, Liam L'Outre, a capable Pathfinder in his own right. There are whispers among some who have met Ober, that he benefits too much from his brother's influence, but to those who know him, Ober L'Outre is a naturally talented individual in his own right.

A short, slender female figure approaches, wiping sweat from her forehead. The glimmer of her skin remains: on closer inspection, it becomes clear that her skin is scaled. Further examination reveals small horns hidden within her long black hair. Trifle Nik Baru clanks as she walks, her backpack filled with the tools of her trade as a shipbuilder. She looks better suited for battle, however, with a longsword at her waist, a shimmering chain shirt under her cheap clothing, and a worn spellbook tucked into her belt.

Trifle nods at the others and says nothing, content to watch.

A courier finds each of you as you go about your daily business today and delivers an envelope containing orders and funds sending you by sea to Almas in Andoran. Your ship departs on tomorrow's evening tide and you are to present yourself at the Cathedral of Aroden in Almas by Sunday at noon. You will be briefed on your mission then.

A tall, scarred and heavily tattooed half-orc stands in the corner, wearing no armor and carrying no spell books. As he moves into the center of the room he rolls up the sleeves of his well worn traveling clothes, revealing thick muscular arms, each of which are covered in thick blue scales and end in wicked claws. The faint smell of ozone follows him as he moves through the room.

Some time after the other Pathfinders arrive in Andoran, another of their ranks joins them shortly before the briefing is scheduled.

The new addition is a short but trim and physically fit Tian-Min woman with long, dark hair and sapphire blue eyes. Her hair is tied up with a red ribbon in a loose ponytail, and she wears a silver chrysanthemum-shaped hair ornament just above her left ear. She is currently wearing a very well made suit of plate armor, with stylised wing-like greaves and a body plate engraved with a pair of songbirds and cherry blossoms, and holds a black glaive decorated with beadwork and engravings in what appears to be some kind of Tian script.

"Good morning all," she says with a moderate bow and a dimpled smile; her voice is noticeably accented, but still quite understandable. "My name is Saki Kanazawa, humble servant of the Lady of Chrysanthemums, Shelyn."

"My apologies for not arriving sooner; I've been spending time with my parents here in Almas while I can. Oh, it's wonderful to be back home again...!" The paladin sighs in happiness.

Saki takes quite a while to respond to Skybek, obviously struggling to piece together what the strongly-accented dwarf is saying. No matter her proficiency in Taldane, it's still difficult for a non-native speaker to parse that accent!

"Well, perhaps a little bit of Cayden Cailean--everything in moderation, after all," she smiles bemusedly. The Lucky Drunk bore much in common with her homeland's deity, Sun Wukong--a trickster and good-for-nothing scoundrel. However, Saki got the impression that Cayden was slightly less grating than the Monkey God; at least hers and Skybek's faiths could find common ground in liberating the oppressed, after all.

"I'm not much of a singer," Saki admits a little sadly, "but I can dance..." Taking a few steps back for safety reasons, the paladin inhales deeply, shifting into a unique battle stance that allows her surprising range of movement despite the heavy armour she wears. Focusing on some imaginary target, Saki then begins to move through a dance with her glaive, a performance that is much art as it is martial training. The maneuvers combine spinning, defensive moves with the pole of her weapon as well as strikes with both blade and fist. When she completes the brief introduction of her skills, Saki turns back to Skybek and bows.

"I also enjoy the study of poetry--although perhaps not of the sort you are used to," the Tian-Min woman pauses a moment in thought, before reciting the translated verses of one that popped into mind:

"On those summer nights
when it still seems late evening
but then it is dawn,
where in the clouds, I wonder,
is the moon finding lodgings?
"

"I suppose poetry is similar to songs," she admits afterwards with a thoughtful nod. "And I can certainly get behind merriment, particularly with musical accompaniment!"

Frag's normally laconic demeanor cracks a bit at Saki's dance. With jaw slightly agape he watches in complete amazement. He gives a near reflexive bounce of his pectorals before smiling and looking about for a beer to drink.

Let the games begin!

The party continues its good-natured chatter on the approach to the Cathedral before heading on in at the appointed hour.

Late-morning light streams in through the stained glass windows of the Cathedral of Aroden in Almas, where Venture-Captain Brackett sits behind a large, antique desk replete with hairthin lines that mar its surface like nearly healed scars. Beside the desk stand a no-nonsense elven woman dressed in wizard's robes and the indomitable Major Colson Maldris of the Andoren Eagle Knights. The Venture-Captain scans a handful of papers before speaking to you.

“Pathfinders, I recently received news of a kidnapping in Sauerton, up in the northern wine country. Thalia Andares, heir to the Sauerton Red wine fortune and daughter of Consul Tercio Andares, vanished during the Silverglazer Sunday celebration and has not been seen since.”

He glances at Maldris before continuing. “The Major tells me that Tercio Andares is powerful and widely respected; not only has he been the mayor of the large town for many years, but he is also a strong voice in the Andoren military—even for a consul. The Sauerton Red winery has made him extremely wealthy, and his financial support could be a considerable asset to the Pathfinders’ important work in and around the Worldwound. He seems uninterested in foreign affairs, though, perhaps because it’s politically safer to focus on domestic matters. Even so, he is known to help those who help him. I am convinced that the Andares’s gratitude would do much to refill our war chest for a struggle that is unlikely to end quickly. When you track down Thalia, as I trust you will do quickly, it is important not only to the Pathfinder Society but perhaps to the whole world that you request funding for the military campaign against the Worldwound. Of course, convincing Tercio to contribute troops and military aid would be even better, but aim for finances first and then see if you can do better.”

After a pause, Brackett gestures to the wizard at his side. "Telfyrn here had some visions that may be able to help–"

The elf quickly interrupts, frowning, "Scrying, Brackett, is diff–"

"Ah, yes, scrying" he concedes. "Do continue..."

"Hmph. My scrying indicates that the young Andares is being held in a building with high ceilings and once-elegant adornments in a style popular in this nation before the People’s Revolt. The structure seems to have sustained extensive fire damage which has not been repaired. I suggest you ask around Sauerton for a building matching that description. Thalia is alive and unhurt, at least for now. She was reading a fresh copy of the essays of Alysande Benedict when I saw her."

With another look at the Major, Brackett continues. “We have transportation ready to take you to Sauerton as quickly as possible. When you arrive, present this letter to Consul Andares before you begin your investigation. It introduces you and offers the condolences and assistance of the Pathfinder Society. Not only is this proper etiquette to announce your intentions to the mayor, but Thalia vanished from the Andares manor. Someone there should be able to make sense of Telfyrn’s visions." Telfyrn frowns again at Brackett’s diction but doesn't interrupt. The venture-captain pushes a sealed letter addressed to Andares across the table. “Introductions, rescue operation, then negotiation for funding and possible military support. Make any questions quick; you’ve got a boat to catch.”

Kingmaker Tactical | Strategic | The Marchlands | Campaign Tracking

After a few questions are asked and answered, Major Maldris feigns a look of remembrance and reaches into an inner pocket, drawing forth another sealed letter. He presses into Skybek's hands. "From your cousin Tybek..." he says with a nod, looking meaningfully at Saki and Trifle.

Letter:
The letter reads:

Friends of Freedom,

While I hope that the Andares family agrees to help the society, I am also wary of this political practice of mutual backscratching. I have received several recent reports of high-level corruption within Andoran's government. As all of you are in Sauerton—especially you, who care for this fine country—remain vigilant for signs of short-sighted corruption and abandonment of Andoran’s founding principles of freedom and democracy. Follow what you believe to be the best course of action, as I will not be available to advise you. Nonetheless, I would appreciate any reports of corruption after the situation is resolved.

Share this caution with your comrades, if you trust them, but beware their own motivations in securing beneficial agreements.

With confidence,
Major Colson Maldris

Whoa, and the cheerful banter quickly turns to bickering! This will be an interesting journey...

The Major responds coldly to Ober. "There is no mob rule here, but a rule of the people. Those who claim nobility soon regret it, I guarantee it. Taldor's aristocracy, if it ever had one, has long lost any sense of 'nobili--'"

Venture-Captain Brackett is quick to insert himself into the devolving discussion. "Wealth and elected office can both be obtained legally in Andoran, and the Society seeks the aid of Andoran's wealth and might in the battles ahead. Andares is a key individual in that pursuit--do not let your bickering get in the way."

Maldris mutters something about 'vigilance' and takes his leave, donning his tricorne. On his way out he looks to Saki, Skybek, and Trifle and says, "You know what to do."

"We have had very little success narrowing it down so far. Vivianna Talwin is the only major political rival Andares has to our knowledge, but Talwin has no reason to kidnap Thalia and is an unlikely suspect. Andares has stated publicly that he has not received any official demands from the kidnappers yet, so we haven't learned anything from that. You may be able to find out more about what happened from the locals, however. The local captain of the guard, Merton Demrick, is a friend of the Pathfinder Society and has indicated that he would appreciate our help with the investigation."

The elf chimes in again. "Other than my scrying, we have not had much luck in narrowing down the location yet. It is likely near Sauerton, however, as there was no sign of magic used in the kidnapping."

"Trifle," Saki says cheerfully, apparently unoffended by the snark, "while I would prefer to avoid combat altogether, there are times when a rose is insufficient, and that is when I suppose you shall see that dances are not merely something done for show."

"As for the drinking songs, Skybek... ah, I know a few, off the record of course. But I can't drink too much—my cheeks get all ruddy after just one glass of wine!"

-------

During the briefing…

Upon entering the Cathedral, Saki is immediately distracted by the stained glass windows, and spends some time gazing at them before she finally forces her attentions back to her superior officers. She bows to the two of them politely, particularly Major Colson Maldris. The Tian-Min woman listens in silence to Brackett's words, nodding along as the brash Venture-Captain speaks. A terrible turn of events, a kidnapping; but thank the Gods that Thalia Andares was still alive and well.

And then, of course, Ober opens his mouth, and Saki sighs as the rest dissolve into petty arguments. She lightly massages her temple; ah, this was always the case, was it not... it was the rare mission where Pathfinders did not clash on one level or another.

"Alas, I have spent precious little time in Taldor, Ober, but I have experienced first-hand the pain that comes with royalty and succession back in my homeland of Minkai," Saki says evenly, clear that she's struggling to take a middle-line approach here. "The democracy-style government of Andoran is a fresh approach that avoids much of the kind of corruption and instability that forced my family to flee the nation. Now, I am sure that Taldor's nobility is by no means like the Jade Regent, but... there is definite benefit in allowing the citizenry to have their way."

"Andoran has been nothing but accommodating to new arrivals such as myself and my family, and I am sure even you will find things to like about the country before you leave it, even if you are not a fan of our democracy." She offers him an encouraging smile.

Saki has a read through the letter before glancing to Maldris and nodding.

"I have no more questions for you, sir," she says to Brackett with a nod. "It appears we must simply ask around when we arrive to get to the bottom of the mystery."

Would Knowledge (nobility) work?

The Northman doesn't seem interested in questions. That's for the more erudite members of the team.

"I agree Mithradaties, Cheliax is a sick dog," Ober says with a smile. "As for racism, well insults with no merit, merit no response."

He nods to the Andoren rep.

"My apologies, I'll keep my opinions about the mercantile nature of Andoren politics to myself, when visiting your nation."

;), thanks for playing along. I'm still developing Ober's character, complete with flaws.

Mithradaties, due in large part to his childhood (if that is even an appropriate word), feels very strongly about issues of racial equality. In addition to his dark and still mostly unexplained past, in his early days as a pathfinder he was on a mission in which his fellow pathfinders mistook him for a goblin several times (perhaps due to his green skin) and attacked him. He is thus especially sensitive about this issue among his fellow pathfinders, though he is also an accomplished diplomat and will endure any slight in the name of completing his mission

Skybek has no wish to argue with his team in front of the Venture Captain. However, once outside, he tries to clear up any hard feelings with the half orc.

Now, there's something the whole party can agree on! No worries, every character needs a flaw or two. ;)

When all ready questions have been answered, Brackett points to the letter in your hands. "Don't forget to introduce yourselves with that before you begin any investigating. Good luck, we're counting on you."

With the air cleared on the way to the docks, a plainclothes messenger bearing no insignia intercepts the party and delivers a sealed missive to Frag and Ober.

Letter:
The letter reads:

Steadfast subjects of Taldor,

Although our efforts in Absalom were pivotal in sending its forces north to Mendev, the aristocracy of Taldor remains complacently sluggish. If Taldor and the nobility that it represents are to rise again, it is clear that we will not accomplish it with the direct aid of our homeland. It shall only be through audacity and ambition that we remind the world why Taldor is the greatest empire, so I have set in motion a grand operation: a new Army of Exploration--this time bound for the Worldwound.

We must resign ourselves to leading only a few green and blue banners and instead find other allies who might join us. Seek out others who value what it means to be an aristocrat, those who command armies, or both. Countless ancestors of blue-blooded leaders owe Taldor favors, and we will call in what debts we can discovery in the archives.

Do this, and when the histories chronicle the war's greatest heroes, they shall write of Taldor!

For Glory!

Saki:

There are many in Andoran who would take offense at the word "nobility," but I'll take it. :) You know that Tercio Andares is mayor of Sauerton, one of the consuls who administer Andoran's military, and the owner of the extremely successful Sauerton Red winery.

I have religion and planes, though I could ask around nicely with Diplomacy to gather information, but I figure I'll wait until we arrive in Andoran.

Ober reads the message and frowns, before handing it to Frag.

"Aristocracy is not without its failings," He says to Saki, waiting until the messenger is out of earshot to continue. "Our current prince among them, but when a true Philosopher-King sits upon a throne, ruling an empire with only the best interests for his people and his homeland in his heart, there can be no better form of leadership."

He takes a look around, for the chartered vessel.

Sort of ;)

On the journey upriver to Sauerton, the party is able to piece together the following (compacted for space reasons only):

Knowledge!:

Sauerton is infamous for its cheap and widely distributed wine, called Sauerton Red. It has become immortalized in an Andoren proverb that something of poor quality “must be down from Sauerton.” Sauerton is a large town located in wine country in northeast Andoran, about equally distant from the Andoshen River, which is used to ship wine to Andoran’s southern ports for export, and the Verduran Forest, which occupies much of the tense border with Taldor and Galt. Sauerton has been a site of productive vineyards for centuries, and the once-noble Andares family has been a major owner of those vineyards since long before the People’s Revolt. Although the Andares family chose to give up their noble privileges during the revolt, nearly every mayor of Sauerton in the 44 years since has been a member or close relative of the Andares family.

Tercio Andares is mayor of Sauerton, one of the consuls who administer Andoran’s military, and owner of the extremely successful Sauerton Red winery. Andares has generally remained popular in Sauerton despite the town suffering from a rash of attacks by wild beasts from the Verduran Forest in recent years, as his winery employs much of the town directly or indirectly, and it is rare for any public figure to suggest Andares might be responsible for any problems.

Your voyage up the Andoshen river is pleasant, with sunny skies until the very end. In the last hour, a light rain begins to fall. Arriving in the town square, you see several presses seemingly abandoned mid-production--the townsfolk await the return of fairer weather to resume production.

As you take in the scene a halfling hails you cheerfully from beneath a rain-spattered helmet. "Greetings, travelers! I am Captain Merton Demrick of the proud nation of Andoran, and captain of the guard in this here town of Sauerton. May I inquire as to your business here?"

Liberty's Edge

"Greetins, Captain Demrick. Ahh'm Skybek Odeon, and mae friends and Ahh are Pathfinders and we're lookin fer Consul Andares. Could yae point us in the richt direction?"

Skybek pulls out his wayfinder and holds it out for the captain of the guard to see.

Kingmaker Tactical | Strategic | The Marchlands | Campaign Tracking

"Ah, yes! I was hoping the Society might be able to send a team. Good day, Skybek Odeon and friends. Please allow me to act as your guide for a short while. I shall escort you to Consul Andares' residence."

The cheerful halfling leads you through the well-maintained streets of the town, pointing out various landmarks and remarking on how nice it will be to get inside, away from the rain. He leads you down a row of several dozen stately homes, standing reminders of a past age's nobility. He finally stops in front of a mansion with an impressive facade dominated by marble pillars, situated on a lovely mown green. "This is the place!" he says happily.
