Hi all, this is Matt, aka FurtiveZoog/GM FurtiveZoog.

Hey RyckyRych/Gerrin - Good to see you again. It's been awhile since Narvik Drak and FS I and II.

DM ruling on whether or not Fion would have been willing to travel into the house?

Let's say Handle Animal check DC 10 to bring the bird indoors on your hawking glove. He wouldn't fly in the door without a DC 20 and a real good reason. You may launch him inside, but his mobility and effectiveness would be limited by the low ceilings and tight quarters.

Male Human Ranger (Falconer) 2 | HP 7/18 | AC 17; Touch 14; Flat-Footed 13 | CMD 17 | Fort +4 Ref +7 Will +2 | Init +6 | Perception +7 | Sense Motive +8

So question then...would it be a DC20 because I'm commanding her to fight indoors for all future Handle Animal requests while inside?

I think the DC 20 is to get her to fly in the door when there is a good option to avoid it. flying her while already inside keeps a regular DC 10, in my opinion.

Any written rules opinion on the matter you can find, I am happy to review.

Second and third questions then :D

Given that my Animal Companion did not have a third natural attack to qualify for Multiattack, she was granted a second attack with her primary natural weapon (Talon). Does this mean she can essentially dual wield her talons? And if so, is is a 1d20+5/1d20 for the roll?

And, after passing the Handle Animal check for performing a trick (i.e. attack) does the Ranger have to continually pass a Handle Animal check each round in order to keep the Animal Companion performing the same trick? Or is it a persistent trick?

Answers as I understand them (if someone has a link to prove me wrong, i'm all ears):

1. Natural attacks are made using the full attack bonus even if there are multiple natural attacks in a round, like 2 claws. If you try to combine a weapon attack with a natural attack, you must take the penalty, like an orc biting and hiting you with a sword.

2. ONce the trick is active it stays active. Sometimes, on attack, you may be required to re-order if the enemy groups are distinctly separate, ie, some near, some far or on opposite sides. That is not the case here, Fion will attack until the enemies she can see are down.

Looking ahead, we might want to think about our skills. (It seems that Culsar was (or will be) most of our Knowledge skills.)

Kellean is going to add Spellcraft and Knowledge Religion and Planes at 2nd, and probably add in History sometime soon, too, while keeping some points in Diplomacy and Sense Motive. Since I only have 3 skill points per level to work with, I may do three skills one level, three others the next.

I think she might change before 2nd into a aasimar "Truespeaker", trading her +2 Diplomacy/+2 Perception for +2 Linguistics/+2 Sense Motive and, more importantly, getting 2 languages for every point put in.

Banon is, and will continue to be, a consummate Ranger. Meaning if there's something to track in the wild or some strange, naturally occurring beastie, he'll be there to check it out and explain what it is to you.

Also picking up ranks in Knowledge (Planes) for backstory reasons :)

Well, 2 prestige points from somebody, if it can still be purchased at this point. Without PP, it would be 750 gp, but that would also require you to have a Fame of 9 to purchase something that expensive that isn't on the 'always available' list.

That.

Wands may not be always available, but a host of potions or scrolls will be if you want to go that route.

Once they get to shade or are doused, could we then do a Channel Energy heal to bring up the NL damage?

Unfortunately, without enough Endure Elements, if we get caught at any time other than just after our rest break, most are going to be down a good portion of their HP as non-lethal damage, damage that can't be healed as normal, in the case of heat/cold. Essentially, we might just have to expect every unprotected person to have (...guestimating...) about 4 less HP than normal to work with. That's quite a handicap.

How long, btw, is the trip through the desert supposed to take?

If I devote all of my spells to Endure Elements, then we would only need 2 scrolls (50 gp total) per day of the desert section of the trip.

Good question! People might have missed or misunderstood the DM's line, "Post your actions whenever you can and we'll get this one done quickly," perhaps thinking it only applied to Fenchil's return attack, instead of to everybody.

Yeah, we should do a battle (at a higher level...) with 100 goblins:

"You took down the Turquoise goblin but are now flanked by the Teal and Aquamarine goblins!"

"But 'Puce' isn't a dark green, it's a reddish brown!" "Just get the one with the scimitar at my head, &%$#%!"

"The Orange and Purple goblins have turned on each other!" (Orange and Purple always clash.)

No AoO from White Goblin's movement he came from immediately south of your square.

This is definitely going better than I expected, but I didn't realize that everyone else in the group was level 2 (Kellean is still level 1), or that the 'civilians' would be contributing.

GM, would you do an update when it gets to me as to who is injured?

I think everyone was healed from the cultist fight and from NL hadn't affected anyone before this battle so by my calculations:

Fenchil 19/23
Gerrin 12/15
Drover 1 2/6
Drover 2 out
Fion 4/8
Banon 12/18
Kaddok unharmed
Kellean unharmed
Atmar unharmed
Hokama unharmed

Hope that helps. Goblins, especially unarmored desert dwellers, become cannon fodder pretty fast.

As far as a Spiked Gauntlet goes, it's considered an armed attack and as such, doesn't provoke AoO's, right?

Right. I remember reading somewhere on the messageboards about there being an intent to have regular gauntlets also not provoke AoO's (they do lethal damage, after all), but I don't think it has been made official.

Banon Thrune wrote:

You are correct. The reference from CRB is below. I didn't realize you wer e using spiked gauntlet on my prior AoO attack (which missed anyway) since you just said 'punch'. I will remember you have the spiked gloves from now on.

CRB wrote:
Gauntlet, Spiked: The cost and weight given are for a single gauntlet. An attack with a spiked gauntlet is considered an armed attack. Your opponent cannot use a disarm action to disarm you of spiked gauntlets.

You could, he is not negative enough to be dead yet. Drover 2 is 10' south of you, and I marked him with a red slashed circle.

I find myself often wishing I has more skill points, especially with a cleric or paladin, even though I haven't dumped Int in any, maintaining Int 12 or 14. What do people think about using the FCB for skill points versus HP?

So far, I've focused on HP, being too chicken to go for the skill point.

But, I am only going to get 1 more rank in each skill I would like every three or four levels. At first level, I went with Diplomacy, Heal, and Sense Motive, skipping Know. (Religion) & (Planes) and Spellcraft, figuring she is a lay cleric, at least to start.

I'll probably take basic training in Religion, Spellcraft, and another for second level, perhaps either Planes or another Knowledge skill.

I could even drop Str from 11 to 10 and Dex from 12 to 10, allowing me to boost Int from 12 to 14.

The low number of skill points can be offset somewhat by spreading them among class skills. For the first skill point you spend on a class skill, you effectively get +4 (1 for the skill point, 3 for the first skill point you put in a class skill). I found I've been spreading these things around for the first two levels, only getting a second rank if I need a certain number of ranks at some point, or when I think the skill is essential. It helps somewhat.

I found I've been using the FCB for skill points a lot actually (especially the skill monkey bard-sorcerer (you know her as Miko)) Characters get very squishy as a result, but in the end the FCB only gives you a handful of HP - what difference does 2 hp really make?

I tend to agree. The hp are easily replaceable either as a healer, or with a wand of CLW etc. When you're the healer you can choose when to replenish your own hp also!. But skill points are not dynamic like that. I would usually take the skill point as FCB, but might pause depending on expected party make-up in a campaign game.

With regards to noting purchases: nowadays there's the inventory tracking sheets. While it's true that the older chronicles allow for tracking item purchases, perhaps it is more convenient (especially in the case of Kellean) to track items on a separate form? Saves the GM a lot of administrative work (and we all know that less work = more play)

Edit: seriously, I have spent too much time in switzerland talking about forms like that.
