"I'm not completely sure, Hallister, but I think Amdelise spoke for the town. She seemed to have a good amount of sway with the town." Miagnik said from behind the Dwarf.

"Maybe we should look into sealing up that passage underground somehow. No one should be going back there anymore."

He then wanders off around town, thinking over the amount of wealth he has attained and realized that he isn't sure what to do with it exactly.

He had heard of not openly spoken of markets where one could get a hold of any number of dangerous objects not normally allowed by the knights and decided that some silvered bolts made of good iron would be worth looking into.

My magic is strong enough that I shouldn't need much in the way of weapons. I wonder if there is anyone who can train me to become stronger?

Miagnik is going to look around town for some silvered crossbow bolts, look into getting a Masterwork spear, oversee and pay for sealing up the Lusson's tunnel because he really doesn't want anyone going down below and is asking around for anyone who might be able to train up some hit points. He is also offering 20 silver to aid in finding the "black market" goods.

"Miagnik, do you really think just sealing this tunnel is going to do anything if someone with an actual lust for power catches wind of what is down there? Depending on what spells the mag eof this town knows I might be able to seal up the tunnel with stone as a stop-gap measure. I know clerics and druidic faiths have a spell to manipulate earth and stone, perhaps windel could pray for such and we could seal the tunnel with a selective collapse?" Stephaine says as she glances to the ruined structure of the mansion.
"We may need to go back down there, see if the Lusson's left any journals. The eye called them its Jailers even if it won their souls eventually. That should mean they had a method to transport it this far, and an understanding of how it is bound would mean we could try to move it some place less likely to be found."

"Stephanie... even if we seal it your way someone determined enough to gain power could dig it up again using the very methods you described. But for now every safety measure you can imagine to keep unfortunate or foolhardy folk from making contact from that thing is a good idea."

He followed her glance, a worried expression crossing his face.

"I've thought on what that eye told us. It's not as uncaring as it claims. I just can't believe anything alive, no matter how powerful, is that unmoved by the events surrounding it. If it is powered by apathy as it said, then why bother with the Lussons souls at all? To gain more power it supposedly doesn't need? To lull us into a false sense of security regarding it? I don't know."

He shook his head.
"Besides even if we moved it, or found out how and in what interpretation it considered the Lussons it's jailers, do you really want to move it. What if all you accomplish is drawing it's gaze down upon you? Where would you put it even? A cave... some vault guarded by a group like the one Hallister and I belong to.... the capital city... or maybe even the Palace of the Vampire Queen?"

Stephanie sighs as she considers the newly added obstacle.

Day 10, 8:00am (turn 49)It is morning. Location – Three Willows

As Rownig is leaving the wizard’s company, before heading to find tobacco, he glances over his shoulder and sees the older wizard, holding the small sack open and staring wide eyed at the coins.

Hallister runs into Windel and Rownig on the street and asks them if they know who is in charge, but before the two dwarves can answer, Miagnik appears on the scene, having heard Hall’s question, he recommends that Hallister seek out the priestess.

Amdelisse is easily found in a small chapel, a temple dedicated to Denari. She informs Hallister that the village of Three Willows has no proper Mayor, and most of the regular business is carried out on behalf of Sir Henri Vessocho, through a local retainer who was given the title of Shire Reeve. The Shire Reeve’s name is Elisk Gessal, and he can be found at the southern end of the town road, at a small watch tower. She tells Hallister that Elisk is a fair minded dwarf, who follows Sir Vessocho’s instructions to the letter.

It will take three days to finish the weapons, that Rownig and Windel have asked for

Day 10, 10:00am (turn 61)It is morning. Location – Three Willows
When Hallister suggests building a temple over the Lusson’s basement, her eyes seem to flutter.

That’s not a bad idea she whispers, and then catching herself, she says, Well, I guess I must take your word for it. You say it is dangerous, but trapped in some way and cannot leave on its own free will? Hmmm, I could ask for donations to purchase the Lusson home, and if Sir Henri is willing, begin a campaign to raise a large church to Dennari here in Three Willows. Yes. I will consider that. Perhaps you and your friends would like to make a donation to the effort? I don’t believe the Lusson’s had any family here, and we haven’t found a will, but I’m sure one will turn up in time. Until then, we’ll keep a close eye on any activity at the ruins.

You can purchase specially prepared holy water containers, made from fragile ceramic, filled, for 10 silver pieces each, and Amdelisse will have five of these prepared the first time you ask for them. If you want more than that, the price will go up to 25 silver pieces each, and she will be able to prepare ten more vials in the three days you intend to wait in Three Willows

Are you all still planning on returning to the Palace after three full days of rest?

Day 10 approximately 12:00pm (turn 73)It is noon. [ooc]Location – Three Willows, The Broken Bugle Tavern

Catching up with the others at the broken Bugle Tavern, Miagnik shows off the things he has found in the village

Miagnik:
The dwarves of the village were puzzeled by your search, and most of them dismissed you out of hand as a confused and bothersome goblin that should be ignored, but eventually you met a pair of Goblins working to dig an irrigation ditch north of the park. These two goblins sent you to Avanera, a Goblin witch who they thought would be able to help you. Avanera showed you around her little garden, and offered you a few spicy radishes, mixed in a jar with some thick honey like syrup and a bitter pungent weed. She assured you that drinking the concoction, slowly over three days, while following a regiment of intense exercise, will add at least four pounds of muscle to your small frame

May samples a few of the dishes and drinks offered at the tavern, but immediately decides that these dwarves do not know anything about taste and presentation, and she excuses herself to return to where Atharessa and Moralane are watching over Dwarbon.

Rownig and Windel, curious and a little concerned for Miagniks discovery, wait for Hallister to catch up with them.

The Bar keeper at the Broken Bugle, Phillipa Zunosos, is an attractive, middle aged dwarven female with short blond hair, and a wide friendly smile. She serves Windel and Rownig a full pitcher of ale, and keeps it filled as long as they continue to ask.

Stephaine spends every waking hour greedily pouring over tomes and cackling at varied intervals, shooting doom-y glares at any and all who interrupted her private little bubble. The little spell caster pressganging poor whiskey barrel into acting as messenger bird at the threat of cursing him so all bacon tasted like brussel sprouts.
Unfortunately whiskey had no idea what a brussel sprout was. So then bribery came to play and Stephaine said he could buy bacon with some of the money. The grumpy bird with a sack of money and letters flapped about the city giving no concerns to two-legged shopkeeps or priests and their preconceived notions as to the intelligence of birds.

Amusingly enough what the gnome ended up purchasing was time, requesting the town cleric prepare castings of lesser restoration the following day. The spellcaster taking a ten minute break each morning to walk to the elder cleric and receive the blessing.
Occasionally she would send her familiar out to ask if the village held one tome or another, many of history bout the region.
Then the gnome would return to her desk and stare glass eyed at the books she had collected, Whiskey barrel occasionally returning to feed or water his master as needed in between deliveries and his own hunting.

Stephaine reads the spellbooks, and will transfer a chunk of the spells in them into her own book. Secondly she would like to make Knowledge checks on the Shield, ring and wand we received from the Lusson's basement. She would be using whiskey to request research materials and shop. Yes that is a terrible idea, Stephaine has so much money she doesn't much care if Whiskey gets overcharged by shop-keeps for being a bird.

Day 13 early morning The party is still in the Village of Three Willows

On the morning of the third day in the village, a messenger comes to Dwarbon’s home, looking for Hallister. The messenger bears a letter from Amdelisse. The letter is brief

Hallister:
I’ve sent a request to Sir Henri to ask permission to buy the Lusson property, with the intention of beginning construction of a temple and school for the local population. I hope you intend to return to Three Willows when your mission is complete. I will have an answer for you then, but until then I will begin building a small stone building at the entrance of the stairs to keep the place secure. Good Luck, may the blessings of Dennari surround you

Rowning and Windel have checked in each day with the smiths, and are pleased with the way the work is progressing. Just after the messenger departs, the improved weapons are delivered

Over the previous days, Stephanie and Windel have taken turns examining the objects recovered from the basement. At first it seems as if the nature of the objects cannot be understood completely, but then Stephanie, while examining the Lusson’s manual on the enchantment of objects, discovers a secret to interpreting the complex auras surrounding the objects.

Eventually, Stephanie and Windel are able to piece together enough information to understand most of the properties of the three objects

The Details:
The shield, Alcor’s Bane is a Magic Shield of Disruption, it is a +2 medium shield, that has a special property that gives it power to harm creatures of the undead category. Upon striking an undead creature with the shield, the holder can choose to channel positive energy through the shield to do damage. Damage is as if the holder where a cleric of 5th level (3d6) and only targets the creature struck by the shield. Undead creatures can save versus a DC of 17, for half damage (this is a Will Save). The wand is a Wand of Displacement, with 22 charges, and functions as if cast by a 8th level caster. The ring is a unique magic item, its exact name is unknown, and it is difficult to tell exactly what will happen when the ring is worn, but it seems to be a ring that makes the wearer incorporeal.

Meanwhile…

Whiskey Barrel waits a moment while the dwarven butcher wraps a full pound of smoked bacon. The butcher works silently, and diligently, and when the bacon is wrapped, the heavy paper sack cloth tied with a brown string, he places the package on the counter, and takes the gold coin, and says

Pleasure doing business Mister Owl

The days of eating trail rations are having an effect on her weight, and she looks a little slimmer, though still heavy. She now looks as if she is carrying weight in every place she needs to be. But it is her attire that catches your eye

She wears a woman’s battle robe, of the followers of Dennari. It is clean, bright green and yellow and embroidered with a mighty tree in heavy dark threads that begins bellow her waist and ends at her neck. There is a huge stone hammer, of grey and silver thread, upright imposed on the highest branches of the tree. Under this battle dress she wears shining chain mail armor. Around her waist is a black leather belt, where her trusty sword hangs.

The journey back to the palace is easier, not carrying a heavy chest and a streather with a wounded Dwarbon.

You march for two hours, take a small break, just at the base of the canyon where the road ends and the small trail up the mountains begins
Three hours later you round a corner, the entrance to the palace is visible higher up the mountain, and you can see black smoke lightly rising from the entrance.

An hour later you reach the plateau.

An army of Goblins is camped in front of the entrance. You recognize a banner, showing a spider motif, and even though you were nervous, you are now relieved.

greetings, friends of Goblinkind, Hallister, Miagnik, princess Maelodakh and princess Stephanie

I sent for a small tribe of goblins that I knew would be loyal to the old gods, and together with those few I still had under my command, we tried to take the second level. Two days ago a bridesmaid returned when we were near to gaining the stairs to the third level. We were pushed back by the trolls and the bridesmaids, who have gathered together, and some strange giants who arrived at the palace only yesterday. We fought a retreating action, setting fires where we could, the bridesmaids don’t like the heat, and we fell back to here. We number only forty two now, but we are keeping any of them from coming out. The giants, brutish monsters from the west I think, fought straight through our ranks, while one of the bridesmaids, who seemed to be in possession of a strange box, also seemed to ignore us and slipped through our numbers with her allies. We ended up fighting three other bridesmaids, and a horde of undead. We did everything we could. Another tribe of goblins, spider hunters from Eight Fountain Springs arrived late yesterday, at about the same time another horde of undead came up the mountain. We slew as many as we could, but many of our number died, and came back under the control of the bridesmaids. When dawn broke, the undead fell where they were standing, and we pilled the bodies in the entrance and set them on fire. We know they will return undamaged tonight, but until then, the fire is keeping the trolls and the giants from attacking us demurring the day.

Windel grumbles to himself but nods approvingly once Rownig whacks the priest's shoulder. "Don't be an arse...she did her part."

Earlier, upon seeing Atharessa...

Mae is dazzled despite herself, seeing Atharessa seem more powerful, merely by donning raiment and finery... The pitiful goblin princess looks to her own sad deportment - mismatched leather and chain armor, shiny bracers, yes, but little of value or beauty.

I am lost. I thought prowess was the necessary path, but...presence has such value.

Mae considers her trusty masterwork morningstar.

Perhaps if I brain her I could st...No. You have money. Survive, and equip yourself for more than raggle-taggle adventuring. Dress the part you already act...

Now...
Mae bows to Galinea and listens with royal concern. She watches with undisguised interest and disguised horror as Hallister sets to work.

Yeeuch. I am NOT touching such filthy things. Nor any undead...

are there any issues with me expending some gold to cast a spell of Arcane lock on the door to the lusson's basement and then shrinking some rocks to make the process of getting there arduous? There is no way we can reliably defend agaisnts a devoted infiltrator but at least keeping the interested local out will be my contribution.

Stephaine had spend the entirety of the three days in her fugue of books, her mannerisms becoming increasingly zombie like as the days moved.

On seeing Atharessa's clothing that cloud of mental fog lifted.
"Oh that is such a beautiful cut of clothing, I love that they managed to make it look attractive working around the sacrifices they had to for the sake of making it work well as armor. It looks very good on you."

Spiders!

Stephaine frowns in concern as she looks over the company of goblins.
"I'm sorry you had to suffer so much loss in this. We obtained the answers we needed in our journey and hopefully we can end this soon. goblin, Dwarf or other manner of creature it is a pain I would never want on my greatest foe to have to fight the corpse of a friend and ally."
The gnome says as she looks over the group of goblins.

"Hoot" says whiskey who had unwrapped a piece of bacon from his personal stash, the butcher paper quite dirty on the outside but the bacon itself quite pristine. The bird noisily snacking on pig meat as the others conversed.

Steph, those are fantastic ideas. I will happily help you with the cost.

Day 13 Afternoon, Location-the entrance to the Palace of the Vampire Queen

Previously…Stephanie can seal the doorway, with Arcane Lock, and with help from the local smiths under Hallister’s direction, the door will also be reinforced and strengthened. I’m not sure what you mean by “shrinking some rocks” exactly

Galinea goes about immediately to get goblins busy collecting ropes, chains, and anything else that can be used to bind the bodies that have been pilled up near the entrance.

When Miagnik asks about the situation, she replies

We know that there are three hill giants, at the intersection of the primary passageways at the north end of the first level. There is a rumor spreading around that more giants are on the way, coming from the east. We have scouts out in the foothills to the east, and if this turns out to be true, we may evacuate this ridge, and meet them in the field before they can join Omara’s defenses here. As to the number of trolls, we can’t be certain, but our best guess is that there are at least six to as many as ten trolls on the second level, patrolling the passageways regularly. The Drowned Maidens are there too, on the second level with a large number of the dead under their command.

She brings the heroes to the cave they once used as a place of refuge from the chambers of the palace tomb. Here Galinea has set up a supply of food, blankets, and firewood.

We’ve kept this cave ready, in the hope that you would return. I don’t need to know what your plan is. I will only wish you all good luck. If we can manage to prevent an uprising of the fallen dead tonight, then we will get some much needed rest, and tomorrow we will march east to look for these supposed Hill Giants. If we don’t find them in one day, we intend to march north, to the capital, to bring accusations against Omara to your King. I’m afraid that my hope of retaking the tomb for our people is no longer possible. The Vampire Queen’s Hold on the third level, as well as Omara’s hold on the second is beyond us. If we can only delay the arrival of more giants, that may aid you in your quest. We will do what we can, but we will not return here until after we have informed your King of Omara’s treachery.

Miagnik seemed heartened by what Galinea and her forces had done so far. What you've attempted to do is commendable, Galinea. Let's hope the king hears what you have to say. Is the first level open to us? If not then we'll just have to force them back."

He then looked at her. "Why don't you try to get some rest for now. We'll take it from here. It wouldn't do to have you falling over from exhaustion."

Miagnik looked at the entrance to the palace. "We should get moving. The sooner we get in there the more time we'll have to deal with the defenses."

Rownig twirls his axes subconsciously, mumbling to himself. "Let's git it over."
