With 5 SP left, would it be possible to work out a spell or ritual that would disguise us like these guards?
Xanos Doom |
Oh, I'm fine being patient. I just wanted to know if it would be possible.

Hey question-are there magic items in this game? And if so, how do they work?
There are some magical items, but not like D&D. Magic items are unique and would normally be more of a plot device for a story than intended loot for characters. You can anticipate that gear will come and go in a sword and sorcery game, and that characters will be defined by their own abilities and actions, not their magical or even mundane trinkets, which will come and go.
If you do find any magical items, it is unlikely that you will have them for a prolonged period of time. Most magic items would have some sort of danger to them as well, as sorcery is not a clean and pretty art designed to make nice shiny toys for adventurers.

That being said, some items that are not magical have qualities that some would describe as such. Items of superior or ancient (lost) craftsmanship can seem magical by comparison to their mundane counterparts.
Conan's Atlantean sword is a good example of this concept.

That's true. In my Dragon AGE campaign, I don't give out a lot of magic items, but sometimes masterwork weapons have some decent bonuses. I could see a masterwork steel blade giving a bonus. To keep the game balanced bonuses will usually apply to damage and not attack rolls. So a masterwork blade might have a +1 or +2 to damage depending on the quality and materials.
I don't want to get into that kind of thing much though because I don't want characters to become overly attached to their gear.
Xanos Doom |
Probably. It's not something he'd come up with on his own, but if you ask him, sure. :)

BoL doesn't really get into two weapon fighting rules, but I think I'm going to keep it simple and say that you can either add +1 to damage rolls or +1 to your defence. You can switch each round as you choose.
I'm not going to allow extra attacks because I find that is makes two weapon fighting too powerful, but a damage or defence bonus makes it more in line with the benefit of having a shield or wielding a two-handed weapon.

Mr. GM, can you take a look at the Recruitment thread please?
Xanos Doom |
1) He'd started out pretty wealthy and had paid in full for 4 rooms and food for as many as 8 a day until the end of harvest season at a nicer inn near the market district (paid for with a single ruby).
2) He'd established a very friendly relationship with the local chapter of the Church of Ishtar by giving them back a piece of lost history. The High Priestess and Xanos were lovers for a short time and remain friendly.
3) He has ingratiated himself to a number of street urchins (by feeding them and providing coin), they have been providing him with information regarding anyone who has taken an interest in him.
4) He has made an enemy of a wealthy local slave-owner by outbidding him on a slave he was interested in (who he then freed. She turned out to be one of Dorin's sisters.)
Are any of these things valid in your game, or would you like me to retcon them out of his backstory?
Xanos Doom |
No problem. Thanks.

I have a question, what is the time period if this game?
It's been mentioned a few times before but never conclusively. Is Conan King already? Or a pirate or what?
And, as I'm playing a character who's travelled/fought etc. with him, would this before they met, after etc.?
Just wondering so as to form a more detailed background.
Xanos Doom |
Good question.
In the game Xanos was originally from it was about 20 years after the events of the movie, but that's not really that relevant for any character that's in this game (it mattered for another player, which is how we decided on that particular time)
P.H. Dungeon |
You recover 1 LB every day for healing.
But that does remind me. Since you guys are taking some down time, and since you've essentially completed what I think is the equivalent of a game session, you can each give yourselves 3 xp. You can bank it for later or use it now to upgrade your characters based on the advancement costs I posted in the Campaign Info section.
In addition, your hero points have refreshed back to 5.
Xanos Doom |
Any chance I can get two at dawn and two at midnight.
Xanos Doom |
I'm taking a few liberties with what Xanos would know, hope that's ok
Xanos Doom |
Due to some posting time mix ups, I'm not entirely sure of the layout, where people are, what posted events are being ignored and whatnot.
Juma Oathbound |
Hmmm, ok. Next question then, for if I had known that's how it worked, I would've stated Juma out at 4 Str and left Agil at 0. Any chance I can rework that?
P.H. Dungeon |
That's fine Juma.
Xanos- Temur, Bran and Juma are all with you in their chamber, which is beside yours (I'll see about throwing up a little map). You have not had time to build a new circle, your old one has been damaged by falling debris. Ardeth is on his way back, but you don't know that.
Xanos Doom |
Because of the open-endedness of the sorcery system, It's a little hard for me to predict what my results might be.
If I wanted to Bind the demon, what would I need to do/roll?
Classic bindings are things like imprison it in an object or circle of sand/runes/light/whatever, or trapping it on the other side of a mirror.
Are any of these things possible?
Xanos Doom |
Yeah, that's what I was trying to do earlier...
Damn.
So what can I do in this circumstance? How about a Warding or Banishment?
Xanos Doom |
Ok, just let me know whenever you have time. Thanks.
P.H. Dungeon |
The main issue is that I don't want to ruin a potentially dramatic encounter by you merely binding the thing with magic and ending it one round, so... What I propose is this. You would need a suitable vessel to bind the creature into, an expensive mirror would make a good vessel. You recall seeing suitable mirror (hand mirror) being used by the wife of merchant, as she was brushing her hair earlier in the evening with her door partially open. Her room is a couple doors down, hall but the demon is between you and her room at the moment. Once you get suitable vessel you would need to successfully make 3 checks to prepare it. These would be Mind+Magician checks #TN 10 and you could attempt 1 per round. Failure just means that the process takes longer. After that you can cast the binding spell, as long as you are reasonably close to the demon- no more than say 10' away. If you succeed on casting the spell (rank 2 spell), you would bind the demon to the mirror.
It should be noted that the demon is quite tough. The characters have very little chance of being able to defeat it in a straight up fight. They will play an important role keeping it occupied while you prepare for the binding, but it will be up to you to deal with the creature.
Let me know if you think that seems reasonable or not. I want your magic to be useful and flavourful but not a win button.
Xanos Doom |
I have the same concerns. Magic means nothing if it kills the drama. I'd much rather it was a more involved process for a bigger payoff. That's closer to the source material anyway.
Let's do it.
Xanos Doom |
Juma, I'm about to make you legendary :)
Xanos Doom |
Something like armor I guess? Damage reduction? Basically, I'm hoping to make it so the demon's claws and teeth can't hurt him, putting them on the same level so it becomes a wrestling match while the rest of us set up to Bind the demon.
Xanos Doom |
Great. So far most wounds haven't been more than that, so it should do, right?
