The demon flashes angrily at you and suddenly gravity reverses direction, as you fly towards the ceiling...
Reflex save DC 24 to grab something and anchor yourself….
The ceiling is 20 feet up and you smack into it causing 2d6 ⇒ (4, 4) = 8 points of damage
”Insolent slugs stay out of this you are wasting my time!”
Sir Alek seizes the opportunity to take the demon to task, smiting him like he has never been smitten before!
Smiting Holy longsword 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 301d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
1d8 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 131d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Though Sir Alek is heavily wounded, the haze seems to be clearing from the Paladin's mind....
"Save Cauldron! Only you can do so now!"
You are UP....literally
Kythel of Nisroch |
Reflex save 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Kythel slams into the ceiling.
Out of channels and magic he reorients himself to walk on the ceiling.
How tall is this unpleasant fellow?
Edrukk Thorvirgun |

Broccan Dunchad |
Reflex Save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Broccan hits the ceiling with a sound like a cartload of pots and pans overturning on cobblestone.
"Oww.." he gasps, as he lays flat on his back 20 feet above the ground.
KenderKin |
Sir Alek continues attacking the demon straight away....
Smiting Holy longsword 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 351d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 111d8 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 141d8 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Sir Alek calls out to you once more...
"Save Cauldron, the beholderrrrr...."

Damage: 4d6 + 18 + 3 ⇒ (1, 4, 6, 5) + 18 + 3 = 37
I just realized I've been doing this wrong - I can't take an iterative attack and a vital strike in the same round.

Alkaid sarcastically says"Nice try."

Kythel of Nisroch |
Reflex save 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
"What the hell was that creature!" exclaims Kythel who draws his wand to try and heal Sir Alek though he knows it is probably too late...
KenderKin |
Alek lies on the ground. His arms raise up into the air, motioning for all to draw near. With eyes wild and blood frothing at his lips he grabs at whomever stands nearest, looking deep into your eyes. He suddenly grows calm, and a terrible aura of doom settles over you as a voice, not his own, issues from his gaping jaw;
“There is naught left for you in Cauldron, heroes! To return is to enter your own graves and to bring doom upon all you love! Seek the sign of the Smoking Eye if you wish to save them all!”
His body jerks, and with a last gasp of air, he goes still.
Any attempts to save him?
You find yourselves in The Vault of Ancients
The magic of the mirrors fades away and is completely gone, and you are within a small chamber somewhere. The only thing in the chamber is Alek's gear...
Looking outside you find yourselves in the middle of a vast expanse, a desert waste, with sand stretching as far as the eye can see in any and every direction. The sun is glaring overhead and the heat blasts into your faces the hottest and driest air you have ever experienced.
Late that night you are able to see the stars and knowledge nature or geography DC 15
Edrukk Thorvirgun |
Edrukk throws drops his sword and grabs the fallen man's arm, channeling some healing into the torn figure, afraid he's already too late.
Healing: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 1) = 6
As their surroundings and Sir Alec fade from view, Edrukk grabs for the reassuring weight of his greatsword before standing and looking around the room in wonderment. "Wha' jus' 'appened? Were 'at really Sir Terc'val 'n some demon? 'r was 't some 'ag trick?"
He shows no interest in the paladin's possessions.
That night, looking up at an unfamiliar sky, he mutters, "Ah'm no' fer knowin' where we be, lads 'n lass."
Edrukk Thorvirgun |
"Ye lads, lady Alkaid, get ye some rest. Ah'll take first watch. Figurin' 'ow t' get back t' th' city 'ill be easier wit' a clear 'ead. Broccan, Ah'll wake ye 'n a couple o' 'ours."
KenderKin |
The watches go without incident, and the next day you find yourselves in the middle of a desert. The ancient vault offering the only shelter to a brewing sandstorm outside....
Sir Alek stirs a bit finally he opens his eyes enough to look around.
"My friends....."
he starts weakly and then whispers..."we must stop the challenge I made, it was the three archons idea, and it was the folly of my own pride; where?"
Sir Akel lays hands upon himself praying for forgiveness his arrogance and pride....
Edrukk Thorvirgun |
Before everyone settles down to sleep, Edrukk converts two spells to the best healing he can offer for the stricken paladin to get him that much closer to healed and help him rest.
In the morning
Cure Serious Wounds: 3d8 + 9 ⇒ (2, 4, 3) + 9 = 18
Cure Serious Wounds: 3d8 + 9 ⇒ (8, 7, 5) + 9 = 29
"Wha' was th' challenge, lad? Ye were led astray by three false angels, but wha' did they 'ave ye do?"
KenderKin |
"It was they who gave me the elixor of strength and they who encouraged me to issue the challenge to the lord mayor, after that they encouraged me to face the demon lord of the Demonskar in combat. It was only then that I began to wonder at their motives, when I refused they revealed themselves and had their servants drag me through the mirrors.
They also revealed to me a vision of a beholder in cauldron, it made sense that some great evil was afoot in cauldron, many heroes rise to prominence only to leave never to return."
The Images of Sanstree and Jenya come into your mind: ”Heroes, we were concerned for you when you did not return, what news? In light of Sir Alek’s challenge, Captain Skellerang is marshaling forces to march on and lay siege to Red Gorge, this will likely cause a great loss of life. Where are you?
Sending Spell
Kythel of Nisroch |
Kythel adds to the healing that Sik Alek receives Cure Critical and Cure Serious.
Kythel looks to teh Paladin, "Can you remember any of the ramblings you spewed forth while fighting? Any meaning to what is behind them that you know?"
As Kythel has the least interaction with these prior NPC's he will allow one of the others to respond to the Sending.
KenderKin |
Sir Alek: "Mostly horrible images, all manner of persons all bearing a glowing mark placed into bone coffins and hung from a giant tree, then the screams and the whole earth shaking and tremoring, a gate being open and the demon bringing forth a horde of demons."
"I think this one was before that of Skellerang attacking the Chisel at Redgorge because of my challenge to the law and order in the city, it was a horrible battle with friends dying on each side."
"And after the opening I think a great beast rising from the lake of cauldron a great fire ravaging through the city, and then smoke and darkness, and the screams."
"I don't know what words I used, but the images are there."
"And yes the gaping maw of an eye tyrant a beholder through the smoke above Cauldron as if it were there all along."
KenderKin |
You saw the fire giant blacksmith making something like a bone coffin the iead of a tree full of them and them being a sacrifice to open a rift to the abyss sounds bad....
...You do not recall seeing any people marked in any way, though you do recall some abductions about Cauldron over time....
The three archons, were of course the three hags that tricked Sir Alek...
I also have to admit that for some reason I did not have the additional 2d6 of holy damage going for Sir Alek in the battle, an over sight on my part, that I have corrected.

Kythel of Nisroch |
"Terrific... Do your allies have any way to scry us and teleport here to retrieve us? If so we should add that to the message as well".
Alkaid Ingrid Bridgette Aiba |
Alkaid telepathically adds to; Broccan, Edrukk, and Kythel
"I could fly with one or two people, and then teleport back, but given a restriction that I'm under, I can't openly do that.
But I could scout out the layout of the Island at night with some overland flight.
And best to reply with thoughts as I don't want anyone else to pry into my truth as an observer."
Edrukk Thorvirgun |
Mindtalk: "If'n ye be one o' th' last two, lass, ye could carry yer ally. N' one 'as t' wait 'lone 'ere, aye? Gorum 'as n' seen fit t' grant me th' ability t' fly."
Alkaid Ingrid Bridgette Aiba |
Alkaid replys via Telepathy
"If I and someone else are last to go and we go Flying back, it'll be risky.
And If I'm carrying someone, it would have to be someone whom has the potential to fly themselves.
Otherwise I'll go last and teleport myself myself there."
She then adds via Telepathy
"Though since I introduced myself as a wandering bard in Cauldron,
I could just lie a little and say I found a teleport or fly scroll and used it to get back."
Edrukk Thorvirgun |
Mindtalk: "'tain't a lie t' say ye 'ave a way t' teleport ye 'ome this time. Says nothin' 'bout next time. Yer right, flyin' 'd no' be wisest. Who does th' city need back most first? Ah'm thinkin' the smart one," he points at Kythel, "'n th' strong one," he points at Broccan, "t' pertect th' paladin 'n 'r friends. Ah 'ave some fightin' 'n some 'ealin' if'n we get 'n a pinch while we wait. When Ah return, ye can bring yeself, aye?"
Alkaid Ingrid Bridgette Aiba |
Alkaid replys via Telepathy
"I can teleport myself and only myself and my stuff.
If we had a Bottle of Air, I could teleport folks one at a time as they'd just need to hop into my handysack.
Me flying would not be good at all, since It would take me about 36 hours from here to Cauldron.
And I am not quite sure how close any other Island or the main land is for a rest."
How close is the nearest Island along the way, and How far is it to the Main land?
So for last spot we have; Broccan and Edrukk offering....
Along with Alkaid....
