silently off to the side, you see a tall, dark human man with a dark weathered cloak and a longbow and quiver on his back. He has a habit of observing conversations, studying the comments made as if unaccustomed to civilized gatherings. If he speaks at all, he speaks with a thick Varisian accent. He wears a holy symbol of Desna around his neck.

There is a pathetically thin flash of smoke in the room, followed by a man rushing through the doorway and into the small cloud of fumes. He coughs lightly as he raises his arms in a grand gesture, the vibrantly colored robes more fitting for a sideshow than for adventuring. "Greetings!" he begins in an amazingly resonant voice that echoes through the room. "Today is a day you will remember, for you are being graced by the presence of ALI-" this word is accentuated with sparks flying from the man's fingertips as he gestures about- "KHALID" more sparks "MUSTAFA" still more "ANSARI" yep "IBN ADEEB!" He lowers his arms for a moment. "But you may call me THE AMAZING ALI!" At this last cue, a glittering cloud above his head morphs into the obnoxiously flashing letters spelling out his preferred title: THE AMAZING ALI

Looking around at the nearly empty room with only one audience member, Ali then stamps his foot and swears. "Damn! First I'm late, now I'm too early. Timing, Ali, Timing!"

He has a pair of scimitars across his back and a mace at his side. Observant individuals might catch the glint of mithril beneath his robes. He scans the room as if looking intently for something, then walks with grace and confidence to an empty seat.

"Well done my friend! Are you part of our mission, or are you coming with us?"

Aakif then offers a greeting to the follower of Desna, "Well met, traveler."

Roland nods to each of the assembled "A" team, feeling a bit out of place.

I look forward to zhe chance to work with each of you."

You arrive out of the wintry cold into the welcoming warmth of the Flaxseed Lodge’s foyer in Taldor, looking forward to an evening of companionship and perhaps a quiet drink with fellow Pathfinders.

As you approach the front desk, the greeter – a young Mwangi woman wearing a beige shift, whose lustrous dark hair is worn in a long braid down her back looks up from a clipboard on her desk and smiles.

“Agent, I have a request from the Venture-Captain to …”

CRASH!!!

Before she gets a chance to finish her sentence, a halfling saunters into the lobby wearing khakis, a beige shirt, and a leather jacket. A whip and pistol hang from his belt. He tips his fedora to you as he addresses the bemused woman.

“You’re going to need to take a mop and bucket to the bar, Tuna. Ace has disgraced himself again! At least he had his britches on this time.”

The halfling *shrugs* “Though I don’t know if that’s made it better or worse.”

He turns and smiles at you. “Fancy a walk down to Cassomir’s Locker, Pathfinders? Have I got a deal for you! Oh and if we haven’t met, my name is Trotter Flaxseed. Welcome to the Flaxseed Lodge!”

“I can’t believe I let Ace talk me into putting a bar in the Lodge.” Venture-Captain Flaxseed’s tone indicates he is more amused than annoyed, as you sit on a grassy slope overlooking the docks.

He soon gets down to business. “I pride myself on supporting the Decemvirate by posting some of their dirtiest jobs for the Flaxseed Lodge’s veterans, as well as by giving rookies their big break.”

“In return they mainly leave me alone and rarely involve me in tedious stuff like Faction politics.”

♔♚♔♚

VC Flaxseed suddenly changes the subject. “Shinkeer Aswander, Dora D Asplora, Desmond Aesculus, Glaurung of Anfauglith. Heard of them? They are all famous (or infamous) Pathfinder agents. Three of them are Seekers. But do you know what else they have in common – apart from having an ‘A’ at the beginning of their surnames?”

“They successfully represented the Pathfinder Society at the last Ruby Phoenix Tournament in Goka, Tian Xia where the Society was awarded the now indispensable Hao Jin Tapestry. BUT there’s something else … all four were recruited out of the Flaxseed Lodge.”

“The next Ruby Phoenix Tournament is still some ways off. However, the Ten REQUIRE at least one of the representatives to be recruited out of the Grand Lodge this time. A highly respected centaur warlord from Kortos Island’s central highlands, named Nashota Bloodhoof is one of their preferred candidates.”

“Now despite the diplomatic argy-bargy, at least some of the Decemvirate are keen to ensure the Society wins the Tournament despite the political BS. As such, they have insisted I interview every Grand Lodge-sponsored candidate here in Cassomir to ensure they are up to scratch. I would like you five to go and collect Generalissimo Bloodhoof for me and makes sure she gets on the ship to Cassomir.”

⛵⛵⛵⛵

“And there he is right on time!” At VC Flaxseed’s sudden cry, you notice a handsome East Vudraman merchantman enter Cassomir’s Locker flying the Glyph of the Open Road from her mizzen.

“That my friends is the Irrational Exuberance skippered by the peerless Venture-Captain Hugo Victor. She will be your transport to and from the village of Pier’s End on the northern shore of Kortos Island. Now VC Hugo is a very busy man, he is debriefing a deep cover agent for a week or so, before he needs to return to Cassomir with my interviewee. So by the time you reach The Bloodhoof you will have about three days to deliver her to the embarkation point in Pier’s End.”

The halfling archaeologist slaps a leather satchel slung over his shoulder. “I have here a map and directions to Bloodhoof’s village, a sealed missive for you to give her and a letter of introduction from VC Valsin, who apparently has had past dealings with her. So are we clear? Head to the village and get the centaur back to Pier’s End before VC Hugo departs. Questions?”

The short trip across the Inner Sea from Cassomir to Pier’s End in the Straits of Escadar is largely uneventful.

One evening, Golarion’s full moon causes Arnthoth’s wolf to howl and rush about the Exuberance’s deck erratically.

“Arnie,” a concerned Venture-Captain Hugo ceases his pacing on the quarterdeck to address the party-barbarian. “What’s wrong with Volfie?”

From the waist, a sullen Chelish Pathfinder named Olandril throws his cigarette end over the side and grunts, "Volfie? Tell me that’s not his name!"

"With his size, his name should be Max."

♞♞♞♞

Three days hard slog south of the tiny hamlet of Pier’s End leaves the stinking marshland foretold by the Flaxseed Greybeards safely behind you.

Once you enter the foothills of the Kortos Mountains, you pass a crumbling stone statue with a distinctly female shape. The Taldan(?) runes carved into the empty granite bowl at her feet prove too weathered to read.

Knowledge (history) or Knowledge (nobility) DC 10:

You identify the figure in the statue as Lady Kayle, a Taldan adventurer who sacrificed herself so her comrades could defeat the great dragon Maejerex, who terrorized the Isle of Kortos until 4592 AR.

A few hours later you are spotted by Cangarit Sentinels and escorted with some suspicion to the Generalissimo's marquee.

“Three days?” Nashota exclaims, tossing VC Valsin’s letter to the ground. “That’s quite the sense of humor you Pathfinders have! I tell you I need time to make this land safe for my tribe! You think by paying off one enemy, you solve all our problems? Look around you — we make camp in unfamiliar lands, our strongest warriors lay dead, our wounded captured by minotaurs, harpies and thieves harry us constantly. But lo! The hounds of Absalom retreat, we are saved!”

This rouses a hearty chorus of laughter among the centaurs, until Nashota raises a hand for silence. “A promise is a promise. I owe you much, and Nashota Bloodhoof pays her debts. Give me a month to train and arm a warband so I can clear out these damned mountains. Then I’ll sail off to be interviewed by your silly little halfling for your pathetic human games.”

“Or,” the centaur says, smiling, “you could always march up the mountain in my place. You Pathfinders dealt with our enemies to the south—might as well handle the north, east, and west while you’re at it, since we’re such good friends?”

Nahsota grins, and gestures up the mountain. “To the west, the 'time-travelling' thief Stag the Old Strider makes camp somewhere in the forest. I don’t care what you do with that lunatic so long as you get back the arms and armor he stole from us.”

“To the north, there’s that freak harpy Jerevyx. She roosts somewhere up by Hollowfrost Pass. Just follow the path up Mount Ganog to find her.”

“In the east, look for Dahruun Firehorn. I hear he and his minotaurs are holed up in the old Northwind Mine.”

“Deal with them in three days,” she snorts derisively, “and I’ll consider your request. Until then, the matter is closed.”

Stag sighs "Yes, Mikey. We know you're Bad."

GM:
No casting! That was only if he needed to and/or could get away with it without causing a fuss. I also thought about retconning Ali's introduction with the centaurs but this is just one of those weeks.

Ali claps his hands loudly. "Splendid! Yes, a drink to commemorate the occasion that all will be well between the Old Strider and the centaur clan! I think you will find that it really is better to be on the good side of the centaur tribe. But now, allow me to provide a little entertainment to keep the night alive!"

Ali leaps the front of the tent, using it as the backdrop to his makeshift stage in the clearing. "Tonight you will see things that will astonish the eyes and boggle the mind! Behold! The Amazing Ali!"

His performance is a mixture of simple sleight-of-hand tricks and some minor prestidigitations but no one can deny that Ali really puts his heart into the performance and was certainly born with a natural predilection for the entertainment profession.

Perform (act): 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (1) + 18 = 19

Edit: Tonight, however, his act is a little off... Lol.

As Ali’s performance progresses, Stag’s actions vary from good-natured heckling, “When’s the magic show start? Ha ha ha!”

To piercing Volfie WHISTLES and polite applause. The Old Strider is clearly enjoying himself. “I find the more I drink, the better your act gets, Ali! Come, ser! A glass of wine with you.”

At one stage he slaps Arnthoth on the back so hard, he spills the Kellid’s wine. “My apologies, my friend. MIKEY 2! Refill Arnie’s cup and fetch Volfie another leg bone or two!”

The ranger then orders his henchmen to “Check how Doutzen is getting on with that raw haunch I left for her. By Gorum's Greaves, that bird doesn’t eat all that she should.”

“Oh and take some venison to your brothers: Isthisneverland and Where’sbubbles, when you relieve them.”

The Old Strider YAWNS. “I will sleep soundly tonight, my friends. Feel free to place your swags around the fire and set any kind of watch that you like. Though rest assured, the Jackson 4 will keep the outer perimeter safe.”

“I will break camp early in the morning, and return to Absalom. So you might want to think about your next destination.”

Roland enjoys the show, but does not overly trust the brigand and especially not his backwards walking yes-men.

If I may ask, how long have you been out in the wilds?"

“Two years? Maybe a mite longer.”

The Old Strider seems more than happy to talk about himself. “I was one of the first bounty hunters hired by Rathor Vastille to take revenge on the centaur tribes for their raids on his House’s trade ‘vans. When that fool Nashota Bloodhoof murdered his nephew under a white flag, things escalated quickly! But the widening of the war was good for my business.”

“Then when your Ambrus Valsin brokered the truce between the Horse Lords and House Vastille, things settled down. Most of the mercenaries and private contractors went home. But I stayed …”

Stag *shrugs* his old shoulders suddenly looking tired. “I tell myself it was to collect the Bounty on Bloodhoof’s head. But truthfully, I’m an old man. I don’t like change. These woods – this life is all I know and love. In Shadow Absalom I’m nobody. Out here, I’m a player! Maybe even a legend. But I accept it’s time to go spend at least some of my money before I face the Lady of Graves.”

“Who knows? Maybe I’ll get used to warm beds and bed-companions.”

Arnthoth is reserved at first, but as the wine flows and the stories are told, the Kellid relaxes, begininng to tell a story or two himself.....

".....and this snake-beast-woman came at me with her spells, but Volfie and I shrugged it off and flanked the creature. While Volfie grabbed her tail in his mouth, I brought my hammer down in a crushing blow, dispatching the beast!...."

".....he was a formidable opponent, but I injured his right leg, causing him to favor it. Feinting to his injured side, I swung my hammer in a high arc and brought it down on his head! The thing exploded like a ripe melon!"

"...your bird. I saw them once in Brevoy. They appear to be noble beasts and worthy fighters....."

Day 2 of 3 is here!

Whether you spend the night passed out in a drunken stupor or sleeping fitfully with one eye open, it passes uneventfully.

At dawn, as Aakif rises to make his daily obedience ritual to Sarenrae, a red-eyed, wild-haired Stag stumbles and grumbles his way out of his tent to check on his sentries and see to his mount.

Prepared Spellcasters, As we’ve entered Day 2, feel free to re-charge/alter spell-lists.

The old ranger has a strained smile for a fellow early riser. “Morning, Imam. Sleep well? I’ll get that lazy sod Mikey onto frying up some fawn’s fry and fritters soon. After your mate Arnie’s efforts, I doubt there’s any wine left. Might have ta wash breakfast down with rainwater, which is kinda grim.”

“Oh, I’ll fetch that Cangarit gear for you now before I forget. It includes that crazy b!tch’s ceremonial warspear, which will earn you a few brownie points, I'd reckon.”

The woodsman looks up at the brightening sky and *groans* “You fellas decided where you’re headin’ next?”

Please let me know where we’re going – North to harpies or East to minotaurs?

Ali wakes up and springs up from his blankets, the alcohol of the previous night not seeming to have kept the suli down for long. "Fantastic! What an opening act, if I may say so! A light bit of fun to really escalate the tension for what are sure to be two rousing and nerve-wracking scenes! Well, where to then? I say we take out the harpy. Nothing like a feather in the cap to keep one's spirits up as we go search out the minotaur. . . and that may take a while, if what I've heard of minotaurs is correct."

After breakfast, the camp is dismantled as the Jacksons hum and sing while they work. At one point, Stag needs to physically intervene to stop a heated argument between two of the brothers.

“Look, Mikey2! I saw him go into her room at the Saucy Wench after midnight. And it wasn’t to play board games, OK?”

“Billie Jean most definitely is his lover.”

As he mounts Doutzen and prepares to march south back to Absalom, the ranger says his final goodbyes. “Good luck, Pathfinders. Look me up when next you’re in the City at the Center of the World.”

“Oh and Volfie? Mind your master’s drinkin’ habits. Spiked Gauntlets of Gorum! He’s a bad influence on me!”

You lift your packs and begin heading in the opposite direction towards Hollowfrost Pass, which bisects the Twin Peaks of Mount Ganog, well above the snowline.

assuming we know a bit about harpies. I will search for past experience with one...

And in case any of you were banking on Ali saving you from the harpy's control, magicians lose countersong. So good luck! Just kidding though. If needed he has silence and has gladly hampered his own casting before to save others from effects that rely on sound.

"Thank you and good luck to you too!" Ali calls to the bandits as the company heads towards the harpies the next morning. "I will send you a feather from our fallen foes!"

When we get close to the harpy's lair, Aakif will cast magic circle against evil and instruct his companions to stay within ten feet of him. This should block the effects of the harpy song. The spell will last for 80 minutes. We may need to use missile weapons so we can all stay within 10 feet. If the harpy lands we can then move up and melee.

The trail leading up Mount Ganog is steep and winding, but easy for an outdoorsman of Roland’s experience to follow. It takes 12 hours of trudging through the chilly air for the Pathfinders to reach Hollowfrost Pass. Sunlight is barely clinging to the cliffs that form this narrow defile, as a bitter wind roars straight down the rocky straits into your faces.

At the center of the pass a pair of weathered stone towers jut from the snow drifts that cover most of the ground.

Ali rushes forward a little as he hears a sweet serenade from the top of one of the towers welcoming the party to this lonely outpost. His magician’s training allows him to shrug off the effects, while serving as a warning to Aakif, who establishes a magic circle against evil.
