***OVERSEER ANNOUCEMENT***

Overseer thread

The first rays of light creep into the inn’s window, accompanied by a loud knocking at the door. Someone in the hall screeches, “The sun is up! Time to gather your tickets and head to The Opera!”

***

Arriving at the opera, you are greeted by a trio of actors dressed in the garb and makeup of a traditional opera from Lung Wa. They seat you in the first few rows. Looking around you see a few others also in attendance. Strangely, there are no sets and the unlit stage is empty except for three plain wooden chairs. Then Kiang Zhen strides onto the stage and addresses the audience.

“Today I am treating myself to a display of opera, which all of you shall perform for me! Backstage, you shall find traditional costumes that will determine the roles you will portray. You may choose these roles yourself, but be forewarned - you must act within the limits of your role. Your objective is to perform an epic combat against a rival group. However, there must be no bloodshed. Any shows of lethal force will result in your immediate disqualification from the event. The troupe able to force its opponents to yield is the victor. Now go and prepare yourselves for the evening’s performance. It starts in 10 minutes!”

I did not help because I remembered that part with the vase. Otherwise Rika would have cut through that cage like it was butter. If 33 on DD is not enough, Rika will for expediency's sake. Sorry I wasn't around, RL just slammed me.

Refreshed and in clean armor and other accouterments, Rika glowers as she trudges towards the backstage area. "First go for gems sprinkle like dirt, then look for vase in sewer, now we make like play. I start to be tired. Pratts will have to be stay on side."

She briefly looks around at the costumes on display before turning towards the prop weapons, grabbing one to gauge it's balance. " I sorry if bore, but this... This is not the sense make."

@Mariel, Keep your acid flask :)

Master Mido kneels beside the cage with his ear to the lock as he manipulates the mechanism with a plume-clip borrowed from the Yellow Tengu.

The old gnome smiles as the final tumbler gives a satisfying *click* Unfortunately, at the same time Rika finally loses patience and smashes open the cage with her adamantine blade, shattering the vase inside.

Before anyone can do or say anything, the Ruby Tengu raises a talon for quiet. “The cage is just a cage. The vase is a cheap knock-off. Fired in some sweat shop in the Shackles or Katapesh. Then imported into Absalom by the thousands.”

“What is important is INSIDE THE VASE.”

Mido CMB: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Rika CMB: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

Mido and Rika proceed to tussle for procession of six red paper envelopes, each embossed with an elaborate hand-painted print of a jade phoenix. Rika eventually holds her half-dozen prizes up triumphantly.

Each envelope holds a folded invitation to attend a performance of a traditional opera from Lung Wa entitled Dawn of the Jade Phoenix, to be held at a small theater in the Foreign Quarter.

The inivitation contains a short addendum: Under no circumstances will animal companions, eidolons, mounts, pack animals, non-sentient ‘best friends’ or other pets be admitted.

Arcanists are permitted a single familiar of small size (or smaller) but are responsible for supervising such familiar at all times.

☹ ☺ ☹ ☺

You are led backstage by the Three Amigos, where a number of operatic costumes are on display. Mido and Rika recognize them to be of a style particular to the Lung Wa region of Tian Xia.

There are a total of 8 costumes. One of the ushers gestures for you to select one each. The others stand behind, waiting for you to make your choice, ready to assist in putting on the costume and makeup.

The choices are:

Leading Males, Sheng (生): These are the leading male roles for the production.

1. The General: The General wears a long beard and fights with a wooden sword (1d8 nonlethal) and armor (treat as splint mail).

2. The Monkey King: The Monkey King wears an elaborate monkey mask. The Monkey King is portrayed as an acrobat and trickster and is permitted to cast spells.

Leading Females, Dan (旦): These are the leading female roles for the production.

3. The Warrior Woman: The Warrior Woman wears full armor (treat as splint mail) and peacock feathers, and fights with a dulled, bladed polearm (1d8 nonlethal).

4. The Wizened Crone: The Wizened Crone wears long robes and walks with a cane. She is permitted to cast spells.

Painted Faces, Jing (净): The Jing role represents a strong and forceful male, who play supporting roles in the production.

5. The Noble Warrior: The Noble Warrior wears red face paint and full armor (treat as splint mail), and wields a large club (1d10 nonlethal).

6. The Cruel Bandit: The Cruel Bandit wears blue face paint and wields a long wooden knife (1d4 nonlethal), specially balanced to allow a capable individual to make nonlethal sneak attacks with it.

Clowns, Chou (丑): These humorous characters are allowed to speak with the audience in order to make jokes at their opponents’ expense. Chou are also permitted to cast spells.

Chou can carry and wield a broom or stick (treat as an improvised weapon dealing 1d6 nonlethal damage), claiming it to be whatever weapon they desire for the sake of performance and comedic value.

7. Male Chou

8. Female Chou

Rules for choosing costumes:

Each role can only be taken once.

I'll go with first come first served, but feel free to negotiate or trade.

Although the costumes are gender specific, you can select roles of the opposite gender. (Traditionally, female roles were played by men)

Please Note: Kiang Zhen's ruling of no lethal attacks applies to spell use as well.

You can use these 10 minutes of preparation time to cast any spells you wish before going on stage.

Mariel groans as the vase is smashed and the invitations are revealed. "We dragged the cage all the way to the sewers for this? Ugh!" Pouting, she retreats to her room, while her bath is still mildly warm.

--

The next morning, Mariel is up early as always, dedicated the first hour of the day to her prayers, kneeling in front of her sword, the necklace with her holy symbol hung from the crossguard. "Blessed Iomedae, I hope to make you proud again, today. Whatever challenges are in store for us today, I will face them with restraint dignity and honor."

--

At the theater, Mariel dithers over the costumes. "I suppose I should pick something where I can still cast spells," she muses. "But I suppose I'm not really a wizened crone yet." She laughs. Her hand lingers for a moment on the General's longsword, but she eventually settles on the Female Shou. "Asherah will intervene probably, so talking with the crowd is going to be tough, but I guess miming will have its own comedic value. And this stick could make a passable sword. I'm not sure the Inheritor would agree on that point, but we'll find out."

Once Mariel has her own costume on, Mariel casts a few of her spells and finally asks her componions to gather around. "Please hold hands, if you will. Kiang Zhen said lethal force is out of the question, but that won't mean this performance - fight, really - is going to be easy. If we work together, we can surely make it. May the blessing of Iomedae with us, and may Brom guard our backs."

Rika's temper slowly reaches a boil as she peruses the costumes. Meanwhile, Pratts finds an old discarded pink princess dress which he tries to slither into. "I take this clothes." she finally declares as she takes the General's outfit off the rack. Before going off to put on the outfit, she motions to Manius, Jilia to step forward. Summoning the power of the Valashmai wilderness, she mutters some words, gestures about and finally places her hand on each of them in turn. "Make skin like skin of tree."

Barkskin has been cast on Jilia and Manius.

A minute before they are set to begin, Rika casts another spell quickly.

Lead blades has been cast.

While the Pathfinders select costumes and pre-cast spells for the performance, one of the Lung Wa ushers approaches Rika nervously.

“Excuse me, General. I regret to say … that is, it pains me to inform you … I mean, I don’t make the rules, but …”

The man pauses to take a deep breath before expelling it all at one go. “Youranimalcannotgo_onstage.”

“She looks gorgeous in pink, Ma’am. But that’s the rule. If it’s any consolation, the other party’s panther is also remaining backstage with me.”

“Say!” The man brightens. “Maybe your dino and his big cat can hang out together?”

✩ ✩ ✩

While the backstage divas, dinos and cats are being herded, a rich, pompous voice drifts into the Pathfinders’ dressing room from the one across the stage.

“Don’t bring me problems, bring me solutions, Seoni! You NEED to make a play or two tonight. A play or two! Get it? Gorum, I’m funny!”

< sycophantic laughter >

“Seriously though. You’re coming with me to Bloodcove next week to explain to the Board how you let Nefti defect back to the Pathfinder Society, after he’d been in your custody for less than twenty-four hours!”

“I’ve covered for you once with the ‘hostile takeover’ of that Tien ronin’s tickets, after you couldn’t acquire your own. So now you owe me one! Try working smarter not harder, OK?”

Seoni’s higher-pitched voice replies evenly, “Bingo, Dear Leader.”

Just waiting for Valjoen to select a role, before we lift the curtain on this show.

Rika was about to give the young man with the shaven pate a rather sizable piece of her mind when she hears the conversation from their soon-to-be opponent's room. Her hand shoots out for her starmetal weapon... Momentarily. And then a rather vicious smile spreads across her face. "Is fine. But Pratts is very wild. Without me around, he do things I not agree with. Like rabid hungry animal. But I sure is fine. Pratts! Be good."

The raptor bares it's teeth viciously. Tonight, perhaps he will be fed.

Would it be a sense motive check to get a read on what this guy and others like him would think if bloodshed were to happen offstage? As in a raptor were to rip to bits a dirty Aspis behind the curtain?

@Valjoen, can you please choose a role as a part of your initial combat post?

The Lung Wa ushers lead the opposing casts on-stage so Kiang Zhen may enjoy this gruesome performance of The Jade Phoenix. Your adversaries do not seem surprised that the Oni Paragon has decided to pit Pathfinder against Aspis.

Looking over the opposition, you spy Merisiel the elf no longer limping and dressed in the costume of the cruel Bandit. Seoni, the woman cornered by Jillia in the sewer channel, also returns as the Monkey Queen.

Nefti the bard is nowhere in sight. He has apparently been replaced by two newcomers.

Knowledge (local) DC 16 or if you have played any Season 6 scenario set in the Mwangi Expanse:

Fiveknives Kalim is a human explorer and hunter. He has the reputation of being vicious and cruel, not only to his enemies but also to his agents and pets.

Kalim believes causing other creatures pain is the best way to dominate them, and he does not flinch at the thought of killing others to get what he wants. He plays the Warrior Woman tonight.

Zaril Namoth is an Ustalavic aristocrat, who is known to be an expert tracker and hunter.

Namoth takes trophies from the people he tracks down and kills. Some say he needs their heads for dark rituals he learned while held by the Bekyar — a people notorious for slaving, cannibalism, and demon worship. Namoth plays the Male Chou.

The leader of the Aspis crew is a handsome Garundi man, dressed as the General. He gives his group a final pep talk before the performance begins.

"I trust you all have your Inventory Tracking Sheets up to date? I don’t want anyone telling me later they didn’t have time to do them. You must make time for important things before having fun!"

"Now go out there and make me look good!”

To hit AC: 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 12 + 2 = 28 (flanking)
Non-lethal damage if hit: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

quickly followed by another blow to her nose as she turns back around to face Manius once more.

To hit AC: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 2 = 22 (flanking)
Non-lethal damage if hit: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

Mariel’s faith in the Inheritor doesn’t move couches Mountains. But it is enough to bring Valjoen back from the dead.

Manius the ‘Noble’ Warrior sucker clubs Five Knives Kalim ... twice! “There’s someone behind me? Really?”

*BAM*

“That wasn't very nice either! It was only that jokey gno...”

*KAPOW*

Round #4:

1. Monkey Queen Seoni, Aspis Brown Warrior Woman (still up)
2. Manius, Valjoen, Rika, Jillia, Mido, Mariel

@Valjoen, you begin your turn from a prone position.

Manius: 62/64 hp + 1 Strength dmg
Valjoen: 41 - 27 - 15 + 21 = 20/61 hp (prone)
Rika: 55/57 hp

Valjoen, Rika, Jillia & Mido, we want more!

Battle Map!

GM:

Rataji: unconscious
Seoni the Monkey Queen: Tommy + ARod 2 go
Merisiel: -1 stable
Five Knives (Brown): Tommy 2 go
Zaril the Clown: unconscious

Broken: If the item is a suit of armor, the bonus it grants to AC is halved, rounding down. Broken armor doubles its armor check penalty on skills.

Shaken: A shaken character takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. Shaken is a less severe state of fear than frightened or panicked.

Staggered: A staggered creature may take a single move action or standard action each round (but not both, nor can he take full-round actions). A staggered creature can still take free, swift and immediate actions.
