Husarq |
Husarq steps forward and bends down, looking intently at the woman's body. "Curious," he says. "Look here, Harrow." He points to a particular spatter of blood.
Aid Another: Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Harrow Tatterhood |
Harrow investigates the body carefully.
"This just happen?" he wonders.
take 20 perception: 20 + 10 = 30
GM Engleaktig |
Harrow, there isn't time to take 20 on perception. Something will happen before your 20 rounds are up.
You cannot aid another with perception. You cannot "see" something for someone else the way that you can, say, lift something with them.
I understand that players are trying to be prepared, but making a skill check takes a standard action. You will have the opportunity to make one and only one standard action before something happens.
I asked for a heal check previously, because, if players wish to examine the body, that would be the appropriate check to make--not perception.
Selter, do you want your standard action to be a heal check or a perception check?
Mareq Bolthune |
I understand that players are trying to be prepared, but making a skill check takes a standard action. You will have the opportunity to make one and only one standard action before something happens.
OK, then. Mareq stands with that terrible heal check. And I assume Husarq's aid converts into a Perception check.
GM Engleaktig |
The party notices that the wound in Catalina's throat is the result of something bursting OUT of it. In your heightened state of alertness, the party also notices something... moving? ... in the shadows of the cellar. (Knowledge religion to know more.)

Berosius is up first!
Harrow Tatterhood |
Harrow's scowl deepens as he examines the corpse.
"What the..!? Guys, something inside this lady kill her, not outside! Harrow now hoping he not have anything like that inside himself, but also wondering what it mean!"
Berosius |
Knowledge (Religion): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Struggling with his mischievous spirits, Berosius manages eventually to draw a wand of bless from his bandolier.
GM Engleaktig |
Berosius knows that you are "surrounded" by three shadows. (With that knowlwedge roll, all players should feel free to reference the entry for Shadows in the PRD. Berosius knows all about 'em!)
Then, one of the shadows reaches out to touch a party member:
Who? 1=Selter, 2=Harrow: 1d2 ⇒ 1, Selter
Touch Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19, STR Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4, The nagaji take 4 points of STR damage.

Tan'ia |
If I can do this...
Tan'ia will do a Burst of Radiance targeted at the wall area between two and three, so hopefully Mareck and his Eidelon won't have to take the save.
That would mean that for 1d4 ⇒ 1 rounds, they are blinded, unless they make a DC 15 Reflex save, then they are just dazzled.
Also, as they are evil, they also take 3d4 ⇒ (4, 4, 3) = 11 points of burst damage.
If I can't place it there, I might rethink my action.
Selter Sago de'Morcaine PFS |
Selter hisses at Sithiss, indicating she is to remain upstairs. Dropping his spear, Selter carefully attempts to place a tiny fraction of Ydersius' power in his club. Svätí tŕne bohyne! cast defensively shillelagh
concentration: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 5 + 2 = 18
Softly glowing spines grow from the club.
GM Engleaktig |
Nice move, Tan'ia! Reflex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6, Reflex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
One of the shadows is blind, the other is dazzled. Both are damaged. The blind shadow moves into the wall.
1d20 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (18) + 4 - 1 = 21, 1d6 ⇒ 4
The dazzled shadow moves forward and touches the eidolon dealing 4 STR damage.
Mareck and Harrow are up.
Mareq Bolthune |
Mareq watches with glee, tinged with worry, as Husarq shrinks slightly, his strength draining from him. Ah, weakness becomes him, thinks Mareq.
Nevertheless, the ifrit pulls forth a scroll from his waistband pouch and says to Husarq, "Wait for my signal, Perfidious One!"
He intones the words on the scroll, struggling to pronounce one or two that he is unfamiliar with.
UMD DC23: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
In the end, he thinks the arcane words sound correct.
Casts Ghostbane Dirge Will Save DC13. Target is the dazzled shadow near Husarq.
"Now, strike you imbecile!"
Husarq |
Husarq hears the words of his master and draws his blade, waiting for the magic from the scroll. Once Mareq tells him to strike, he swings al-Saif, his magical efreeti great-blade.
Power Attack: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 6 - 2 = 9 Dmg: 2d6 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (5, 4) + 10 - 2 = 17
The curved blade misses the creature, despite it's innate magic and the shadow's solidity.
"Harrow, Selter, it is vulnerable now!" cries Husarq with his slow, ponderous voice.
Harrow Tatterhood |
Having faced a single shadow before, Harrow cringes as they appear.
"Not shadow guys! They almost turn Harrow into puny weak oracle before! Harrow not want to be oracle again!"
But the half-orc is prepared. He draws a flask of oil from his bandolier, then quickly applies it to his nodachi.
"Ragathiel tell Harrow this is way to hurt you!" he yells. He steps back to safety while he applies the oil. oil of magic weapon
knowledge (religion): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

Berosius already made the knowledge check. Harrow doesn't need to make one.

Berosius is up!
Harrow Tatterhood |
Harrow yells to Berosius.
"Get them, half-ling oracle! Harrow not want to be oracle again...no offense!"
GM Engleaktig |
Berosius channels for 2d6 ⇒ (6, 4) = 10 HP of positive energy damage.
Shadow Will Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5, Shadow Will Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
One of the shadows is obliterated! The other is hurt.
The injured shadow tries to touch someone, but misses. Touch: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 Then it takes a 5-foot-step into a wall.
Tan'ia and Selter are up.
Berosius |
Berosius expresses his discovery through elegant haiku: "Gaah! Shadows! They're bad!"
Holding aloft the bloody rose of Milani, he prays fervently. "Lady of Sorrows, be with us now!"
Channel Energy (to harm undead): 2d6 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2 Will save (DC 14) for half.
Selter Sago de'Morcaine PFS |
Selter raises his club prepared to crush a shadow when it emerges again.
Hold action then strike when out of the wall.
club attack w/ shillelagh and power attack: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 9 - 1 = 18
club damage: 2d6 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 6) + 6 + 3 = 16
Tan'ia |
Tan'ia will delay until after one of the shadows come back out of the wall, then will case fire bolt: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23 and if she hits it will deal 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 fire damage.
GM Engleaktig |
One of the shadows steps out of the wall. Tan'ia's readied action goes off. (Selter's does not, since he's too far away.) Her aim is true, but the shadow seems to take only some of the damage she expected.
The undead thing retaliates:
Touch: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24, Crit?: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16 (Ouch! :-( Sorry Tan'ia.)
Strength Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 6) = 8
The cleric is on the verge of collapse because she's so weakened now. But, she can take solace in knowing that she just saved Mareck from becoming a shadow. (Since he only has 7 STR.)
Mareck and Harrow are up!
Harrow Tatterhood |
OUCH! Good grief...that could have killed her outright with strength drain! I have a few characters with 7 str that would have killed!
With his weapon now glowing from the magical oil Harrow used on it, the half-orc steps up boldly.
"Hey! Leave cleric alone! We not need more oracles! Stop making oracles!!!"
He drives his weapon through one of the shadows.
Kind of a joke from a previous adventure with most of this group, where Harrow was drained by a shadow and thought he was turning into an Oracle like Berosius...;P
nodachi (adamantine, power attack, furious focus): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 251d10 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Mareq Bolthune |
Mareq draws another wand from his waistband, this time of delicate ebony, inlaid at its tip with white ivory. He touches himself gently with the tip.
Protection from Evil
Husarq |
Husarq waits for the remaining shadow to emerge from the surrounding walls, his blade held at the ready.
Ready an attack for when the creature exits the wall and comes within striking range. Husarq has a ten foot reach.
Mareq Bolthune |
You may want to pre-roll the readied attack to speed things up! :)
I specifically didn't this time, knowing that the GM might be sneaky and have the shadow move about to attack from another direction.
Husarq |
Go ahead and roll your attack.
OK.
Power Attack: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 6 - 2 = 8 Dmg: 2d6 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (2, 2) + 10 - 2 = 12
Oh for f***'s sake.
GM Engleaktig |
The shadow comes out, and Selter's readied action whacks it good! Yet, it still stands. It reaches out in retaliation.
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15, 1d6 ⇒ 6 (Ow! The Nagaji suffers max str damage.)
Thankfully, Berosius' next channel finally gets it! Combat over!
Crap, that was a lot of STR damage to the party.
GM Engleaktig |
Sorry, I forgot I had already taken 4 str damage so I actually had another -2 to hit and did 3 less damage. Does that change the results?
Naw. :-) If need be, Tan'ia can channel, too. It would not have survived 2 channels.
On Catalina's corpse, you find a key to the chandlery's lockbox (that Harrow already broke), a ring of climbing, two potions of pass without trace, and an everburning torch.
Harrow Tatterhood |
Harrow nods as the shadows are defeated, apparently glad he won't be turned into an oracle again.
However, upon seeing the weakened condition of his companions, his expression grows concerned.
"What we do now? Tania, you okay? Helter-Selter? You look like been in summer swelter."
It looks like there are other rooms to explore here. However...are we in a condition to keep going? I guess we could take Tania's gear off her so she can at least walk, and she could support with spellcasting and just finish off this chandlery...then look for some restoration. What think the rest?
Mareq Bolthune |
Mareq stares at the weakened Husarq and shakes his head in disgust at his thrall's pathetic attempt to attack the shadow.
"Although I cannot rhyme as well as Harrow, I will say that Husarq is also weakened. We must find some sort of healing for all of us, before continuing our larger investigation. Let us explore the rest of this building and find aid."
I agree. Let's finish of the chandlery and then find restorations.
Harrow Tatterhood |
Harrow nods, then opens the door to the next room.
Having not been injured thus far, he takes the lead.
GM Engleaktig |
Since I'm botting Tan'ia, I get to say that sh prepped two slots with lesser restoration: 1d4 ⇒ 2, 1d4 ⇒ 3 Selter gets 3 STR back; Husarq gets 2.
The party opens the door to the next room. The smell of hot fat is overpowering. In the front of the room is a drying rack on which candles are hung while they cool. Broken and mangled, it sits in a circle drawn in blood and fat. Farther back, a furnace emits a dim light, and behind it stand several enormous vats, each as tall as a human. It is ridiculously bright in here. Knowledge Arcana to know more about the room.
You see two humans in here. They seem confused at your presence. Sense Motive or Heal to know more about the humans.
