Oh. OK. Tan'ia is sickened for 4 hours.

Lesser Restoration: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Lesser Restoration: 1d4 ⇒ 3

Angradd (lawful good, not being fond of Zon-Kuthon (lawful evil), isn't very happy with Tan'ia's participation in Kuthite rituals. However, since she's making the sacrifice for the greater good (resolving ability damage), he decides to let this one slide. She gets the feeling that she probably shouldn't make such sacrifices again too soon.

Feeling better, on par, the party heads back to Boroi Manor. The majordomo brings them some refreshments (bread, wine, cheese) and fetches Lady Anya.

She greets them: "Hello. You look like you've had a very full day. Do you bring news?"

We just received 11 hp of restoration back...I'm guessing that covers both of you completely, and I think you were the only ones affected.

Still not feeling well, Harrow tries to explain everything that has happened, including stopping the lynch mob, investigating tracks at the constable's house, and then their findings at the chandlery. This part he explains in detail, then tells of the torture at the temple in order to receive help.

Looking at how much we lost, it looks like Selter -10, Tania -8, Husarq -4 (more than I thought). We just gained back 4, 1, 3, 3. I suggest getting PCs back up first, then Husarq can undergo torture if he wants to get back up. I suggest we give 7 to Selter and 4 to Tania. I guess we don't have as much to go around as I thought. Anyone else want to be tortured!? :)

Silver Crusade

I'd like to hand wave this, since so many of you are willing to be tortured. (Never thought I'd ever say that!) The Kuthites will give you a group rate. If everyone is willing to participate in the evil rituals of pain you will:

1) all be fully restored
2) all be sickened for 4 hours

Cool? Any objections?

Anya's demeanor changes. With a firm resolve, she says: "Follow me." Her tone indicates that she intends to confront the Baron with or without you. Stepan is, once again, locked in his study (room A11). He seems to be still as paranoid as during their first visit, but eager to hear what the you have discovered about the troubles facing his realm.

To her husband, Anya says: "Stepan! Our friends have some news for you."

To the party, she prompts: "Tell him!"

The module requires that you make a social check to get Stepan to reveal what's going on and move the plot forward. What check you make and what tactic you adopt as a party, I leave up to you. Regardless of what he has (or has not) done, he is still the lawfully appointed ruler of this land.

But his body is his own. Suffering for no reason (what he would perceive as no reason since it could have been accomplished through coin or time) is bizarre.

Probably ought to have Marek do the talking first and Selter can attempt to assist. But we should try to find a way to present it such that it is not a direct attack. Obviously either the creature was lying or there is some horrific problem that is so aweful that such measures were necessary. maybe we can find another way to work on the problem. ... "

@Selter: I understood we had allocated 7 of the restoration back to you...reviewing how much you had lost, you were down a whopping 10 str. We had given you 7 and Tania 4 of the 'torture' restoration. If that's not the case, let me know so we can give it to someone else. Aside from that, I have no problem with you not doing the torture for rp reasons. If you had taken 7 str back and let Harrow and the others suffer but wouldn't yourself, then Harrow was miffed, but I'm fine with it.

Are we still missing Mareck?

After Mareck has softened the Baron up with spectacular introductions, Harrow walks reluctantly to the fore.

"Harrow would like to speak," the half-orc begins. He goes through, in detail, what they had found since departing earlier. He includes details on the chaos in the town with the near-lynchings, the law man with Tallowthroat, their suspicion of the candle-maker, and then everything that transpired in the chandlery. He details the things that happened with the evil fey. He says all of this in a way only Harrow can.

The confrontational half-orc does not pull any punches with the other part that must be said.

"When we find bad guy, we kill bad guy. But bad guy had victims that he tell he going to sacrifice in big terrible ritual. When victims beg for mercy, bad guy say that Baron...you are Baron he talking about...that you know what bad guy was doing, and that you give permission to...no, ORDER to, sacrifice anybody in town if it help bad guy. But Harrow want to know if this true. Because if it true, it kind of make you bad guy, two."

The half-orc pauses for effect, but then adds.

"BUT, Harrow also know that good people do bad sometimes. Harrow say even if Baron did bad thing, he can change and do good thing. Harrow want to help Baron do good thing."

"Sir Baron, we have successfully tracked the culprit responsible for all of these disappearances!" exclaims Mareq proudly and with a flourish of both hands, raised high over his head, followed by a deep bow.

"A Lurker in the Light, a hater of all things shadowy and dark, has been operating in your demesne, no doubt working to cast doubt upon the shadowfolk who live and work here in your lands. Such hatred knows no bounds," expounds the ifrit diplomat carefully.

I'm sure he knows about the Lurker, but probably will either deny it or claim it lied to him. Either could be true, thinks Mareq carefully.

"This fey has been sacrificing children and others in a foul ritual for who knows what reason. Perhaps just to appease its own evil predilections. Perhaps for some further reason. It WAS operating out of the chandlery, so the tallowthroat disease seems likely to be connected, or perhaps even a result of the fey's work."

And now, the piece de resistance, so to speak. Perhaps he will bite.

"Such a creature is a foul aberration to those who profess allegiance to the Shadow Court of Zon-Kuthon, I think. I'm no theology expert, but I believe the Shadow Lord is... pro-shadow, is he not? I imagine the fey was working some scheme, deceiving any it was working with into thinking its goals were alligned with Nidal's and those of Zon-Kuthon and his clergy."

"How can we further your investigation into this matter and help you protect this land that you hold under your shield?"

Mareq looks at Harrow and theatrically rolls his eyes where the Baron can see them.

"Oh dear, my friend Harrow, you are so direct. Your heritage certainly shows here. Ha! I'm sure the Baron understands what your direct explanation of the situation actually means."

This Harrow fellow is the perfect balance. Perhaps I should ask him to accompany me in my diplomatic endeavors. He can be the bad constable to my good constable.

Mareq, having long experience with diplomatic relations that suddenly go All Frozen Balls, as they say in the efreet City of Brass, instructs Husarq telepathically, Be ready, Puss Brain. The Baron may react foolishly here and attack suddenly. Position yourself without raising any suspicions.

Silver Crusade

Try not to berate the baron. He is a ruler in a Kuthite land after all. He's not the nicest of people.

"I admit my involvement with Ilquis, the lurker in light."

"As the third son of my noble father, I was not content to see my older brothers inherit the land. Fortunately, amid the detritus of generations that fills the crumbling Boroi Manor, I discovered an ancient mirror. In the mirror I saw another manor, shadowed and hazy like a half-remembered dream. Yet where my reflection should have been, there stood instead a dark figure, taller than a man, with a face covered in a white mask and eyes like distant stars. This was Nicasor, a shae. He is both the mirror's master and its greatest prisoner."

"Nicasor agreed to help me succeed my father as baron. I, in return, would trade places with the shae for 1 year once every decade, granting Nicasor control of my body so the shae could escape his prison for a time without anyone knowing he was free."

"Over the next months, my brothers mysteriously disappeared. Nicasor took them captive within the mirror. I claimed they perished of sudden illness, and was crowned Baron of Karpad when my father died shortly thereafter."

"Ten years passed. Last year, I took a wife—a beautiful noblewoman from Nisroch named Anya—and 2 months ago, she bore me a son. Now it is time for me to exchange bodies with Nicasor, but I fear that the shae will keep my body forever, and I am afraid of what Nicasor will do to my wife and son—whose love has softened my heart. Thus I broke my pact with Nicasor, enraging the shae, who vowed to ruin all that I hold dear."

"I fear that the tallowthroat is the result of Nicasor's rage. So I made yet another unfortunate deal, this time with a lurker in light named Ilquis. He said he had the power to ward my people from shadowy powers. It seems he lied and used the opportunity to capture and sacrifice my people."

"I beg of you, help me protect my wife and child." Anya is your main mission, after all. "I've learned my lesson about dealing with Nicasor. Please, enter the mirror and rescue his brothers if they still live, kill Nicasor, and destroy the prison plane within. I offer you full access to my library to research the mirror."

:-) It's pretty unbelievable, right? But, that's why I've chosen (now twice) to call it out in OOC comments. According to the module, doing this for him is what's next. You can, of course, refuse or regard him with suspicion. But, until you do what he asks, you won't complete the module, or get full rewards on your chronicle sheet, etc.

There was a way to explore the temple of Zon Kuthon and corroborate this information. But, with followers of Angradd, Milani, and Ragathiel in tow, that didn't seem like a possible thing.

I will, however, totally let you all punch him in the face (without repurcussion) for being a jerk after the module's goals have been reached. ;-P

Harrow nods as the Baron begins to tell the story, but by the end the twists and turns of the story seem to have left the simple-minded half-orc flummoxed.

Not at all! :-) He's an evil baron in an evil land that worships an evil deity. Being a good guy isn't his thing. I, personally, don't really find it believable that he cares much for his wife and child after turning on his brothers, but... Hey, we're not here to judge a fictional character in a fantasy setting...

I just wanted to head off any potentially frustrating RP.

i don't know...I think it's believable. I find the best "evil" characters in in stories or real life do evil things, but think they have good motives for doing so. They aren't just trying to be EVIIIL in all they do, but just have twisted motivations that in their own eyes are "good." I kind of like the story...maybe he thought his brothers were really bad guys and he thought taking their place would be better for the people. Or maybe in his game of thrones, brothers who always treated him like an annoying spare are legitimate targets, but he truly loves his wife and child. /shrug...I like complex bad guys that aren't just evil for evil's sake.

The Baron doesn't know what to expect in the mirror. He's never been to the other side. The party is welcome to do some research in his library, though. Knowledge (arcana, history, planes, or religion); add a +5 bonus if you're using the library.

Tan'ia knows/discovers: Midnight mirrors are magical prisons used by the church of Zon-Kuthon to punish those who offend the church and its god. Each is an extraplanar prison within a mirror in which the prisoners never age and are trapped for an eternity of torment.

The midnight mirror in the Boroi family’s possession was broken centuries ago, and now functions differently than normal. The command word to retrieve a prisoner from the plane no longer works, and the mirror leaks
shadow essence from the Plane of Shadow into the Material Plane.

Unlike a normal midnight mirror, the broken specimen in the basement of Boroi Manor allows two willing subjects on opposite sides of the mirror to trade bodies (as the magic jar spell) by simultaneously touching the mirror’s surface. Such a switch lasts indefinitely, or until the two subjects switch souls again through the same process.

She finds hints of ways to destroy a mirror, but can't seem to find anything definitive.

Does Mareq learn anything more?

Silver Crusade

LOL! Yes!

Mareck finds and decodes a passage that informs him: The only way to destroy the midnight mirror is to enter it and kill the physical manifestation of the magic item's consciousness with a shard of itself from the Material Plane. Doing so will cause the prison plane to break apart and disgorge all living creatures and items originally from the Material Plane through the shattered mirror back to their plane of origin.
